:00:11. > :00:15.The trial of a lorry driver accused of causing

:00:16. > :00:18.the death of a cyclist in Gternsey has begun at the Royal Court.

:00:19. > :00:22.59`year`old David Allison w`s killed when he was run over by a truck

:00:23. > :00:28.Mr Simon faces charges of ddath by dangerous driving and drhving

:00:29. > :00:40.Today, one of Guernsey's busiest roads came under the scrutiny

:00:41. > :00:46.The unusual sight of Jurats at the scene of the incident.

:00:47. > :00:51.It was here during rush hour just over a year ago that Mr Allhson was

:00:52. > :00:55.killed when there was a collision between his bicxcle

:00:56. > :01:02.Mr Simon, who was driving in the same direction

:01:03. > :01:06.as the cyclist, crossed the cycle path to access Salerie Corndr car

:01:07. > :01:13.The court heard how Mr Allison then slammed on his brakes,

:01:14. > :01:16.skidded and fell off his bike, lying in the path of the trtck.

:01:17. > :01:21.He was run over by the heavx goods vehicle and died at the scene.

:01:22. > :01:25.In court, the prosecution said that Mr Simon

:01:26. > :01:29.was "driving in a manner th`t was so deficient that it created a brief

:01:30. > :01:32.but obvious hazard to vulnerable pedestrians and cyclists."

:01:33. > :01:37.Police said Mr Simon was visibly distressed at the scene.

:01:38. > :01:40.Today, in a white shirt and tie he pleaded not guilty to the charges.

:01:41. > :01:56.There is a plan for some protected land in the countryside to be

:01:57. > :02:01.protected. The land minister wanted to find space for 3,700 new

:02:02. > :02:07.affordable homes. The former glass house sites will be

:02:08. > :02:10.developed, as well as some state's owned sites in St Helier. Ddspite

:02:11. > :02:15.some rural sites being turndd down for developments, the pa generate of

:02:16. > :02:20.plans went through. In my hdart of hearts, I wouldn't be selling any

:02:21. > :02:26.land, whether it be brown or green field sites. The essence of the

:02:27. > :02:32.policies that I'm putting forward is to build affordable units and more

:02:33. > :02:37.creatively on our own state's land. 863 people on the list now that need

:02:38. > :02:41.housing today and so we must have appropriate sites. The planning

:02:42. > :02:45.minister went out and brought back the sites. People say yes wd should

:02:46. > :02:51.develop St Helier. I've got no problem with that. But it's St

:02:52. > :02:55.Helier that's not yet ready for affordable development.

:02:56. > :02:58.All cyclists under 14 will have to wear cycle helmets in Jersey

:02:59. > :03:01.The state?s approved the new law today after rejdcting

:03:02. > :03:06.34 members voted for the law, four against.

:03:07. > :03:13.It's hoped it'll protect chhldren from head injuries in acciddnts

:03:14. > :03:18.Meanwhile, members also approved a revised island plan

:03:19. > :03:21.Introducing a Goods and Services Tax in Guernsey would pose

:03:22. > :03:24.a major risk to the island's future prosperity ` that's the verdict

:03:25. > :03:29.Economist Dominic Swords was commissioned by local busindss

:03:30. > :03:33.groups to look at the likelx impact if the States did bring it hn GST,

:03:34. > :03:58.Virtually everything that you will buy would end up being levidd with

:03:59. > :04:02.that additional charge. For those on low incomes, those perhaps on the

:04:03. > :04:06.threshold, it would have a laterial impact perhaps on their buyhng

:04:07. > :04:10.habits. As is the experiencd in Jersey, the retail sector h`s

:04:11. > :04:15.suffered immensely. There is the added cost particularly for small

:04:16. > :04:23.businesses. They'll be less able to absorb the costs of collecthng the

:04:24. > :04:27.GST. They'll also have to ptt up their prices to try to recover that

:04:28. > :04:33.overhead. When they put thehr prices up, they'll possibly lose ctstom.

:04:34. > :04:37.Brings us to the potential hmpact on tourism and retail. Tourism is a

:04:38. > :04:41.relatively small part of our economy, but if you look recently at

:04:42. > :04:46.how Jersey are growing their tourist sector and how the world is growing

:04:47. > :04:53.their tourist sectors, that is something we need to align ourselves

:04:54. > :04:56.to. It's not a positive message to say come here but we'll tax you

:04:57. > :05:00.more. The state say it's just one idea

:05:01. > :05:04.with no decision yet. But the warning today from businessds is to

:05:05. > :05:11.consider it carefully beford they make one.

:05:12. > :05:14.One of the ships that brings cargo and passengers to the

:05:15. > :05:17.Channel Islands will be out of action for another ten d`ys.

:05:18. > :05:20.The Commodore Clipper scrapdd the sea bed near Guernsey on Monday

:05:21. > :05:23.Inspections at a dry dock in Falmouth revealed that damage to her

:05:24. > :05:29.Passengers are being rebookdd on other vessels and non urgent

:05:30. > :05:37.A new skateboard park has opened at the Millennium Town Park in

:05:38. > :05:43.After consultation with park users, the authorities agreed to ptt

:05:44. > :05:46.in ramps instead of goalposts in the ball court area.

:05:47. > :05:48.It means the area will be for skaters throughout

:05:49. > :05:54.the summer holiday, in a three month trial period.

:05:55. > :05:58.Floral Guernsey's named St Peter's as the overall parish winner

:05:59. > :06:06.A variety of awards were prdsented at the annual award ceremonx

:06:07. > :06:16.Hardacre. Jones`Bishop. Ker. Jones`Bishop. Hardaker.

:06:17. > :06:22.Now the weather. Thunder and lightning should move

:06:23. > :06:26.away swiftly tonight and wh`t is left behind is a fair amount of low

:06:27. > :06:30.cloud and mist. For tomorrow, we have a misty start and then some

:06:31. > :06:33.warm sunshine, the next lind of thunder storms will again bd

:06:34. > :06:36.probably an overnight feature into the small hours of Saturday morning.

:06:37. > :06:40.This's the lump of cloud th`t's produced some of the outbre`ks of

:06:41. > :06:45.heavy rain that we have seen just to the west of us today. It's loving

:06:46. > :06:52.away northwards now and that process will continue overnight tonhght We

:06:53. > :06:55.are between weather systems so hopefully some dry weather `round.

:06:56. > :06:59.Most of the really angry looking showers will move away fairly

:07:00. > :07:02.swiftly. The winds dropping, becoming south`westerly, turning

:07:03. > :07:08.misty with overnight temper`tures no lower than 17. Tomorrow is not a bad

:07:09. > :07:12.day. After the mist has lifted, we should get some sunshine. It will

:07:13. > :07:19.remain dry into the day unthl more storms come up from the south.

:07:20. > :07:23.The outlook is for thundery showers possible at any point during the day

:07:24. > :07:29.on Saturday. A little brighter on Sunday and cooler as we head through

:07:30. > :07:32.the weekend. In a second, the UK forecast and here is the sulmary.

:07:33. > :07:41.interludes and Sunday quieter weather coming our way. But active

:07:42. > :07:47.weather heading for the UK. It was a warm one today. We have a

:07:48. > :07:52.few thunder storms across the UK tonight. Tomorrow we do it all again

:07:53. > :07:56.but both the heat and the storms will have more intensity. Tomorrow

:07:57. > :08:01.we break through 30 Celsius. Today we got to 29 Celsius in the London

:08:02. > :08:06.area. The hottest day of the year. We got to the mid-30s in western

:08:07. > :08:12.Franced the heat has sparked this area of cloud. Providing a bit of a

:08:13. > :08:19.show across south-west England. Strong and Gothsy winds. Lots of

:08:20. > :08:24.lightening flashes. The Wales and the Midlands could see intense rain.

:08:25. > :08:27.You may be woken by a thunder storm but you may not be able to sleep

:08:28. > :08:34.because of the heat and the humidity. A warm night and a misty

:08:35. > :08:40.start tomorrow. The possibility of one or two showers in the south east

:08:41. > :08:45.o England and the East Midlands One or two in North Wales and the

:08:46. > :08:46.north-west of England. Perhaps it could affect the
