:00:25. > :00:27.More victims need to come forward, otherwise the work of the enquiry

:00:47. > :01:00.There are concerns that Jersey's new inquiry into historic child

:01:01. > :01:03.abuse could lack legitimacy if not enough victims give evidencd.

:01:04. > :01:05.Hearings in the ?6 million inquiry began today.

:01:06. > :01:08.Its aim is to learn lessons from decades of abuse

:01:09. > :01:19.The inquiry panel arriving `t Seaton Place this morning on the

:01:20. > :01:22.Their mission ` to find out the extent of abuse

:01:23. > :01:25.in Jersey's children's homes since the Second World War

:01:26. > :01:32.Witnesses will include thosd abused and those they accusd.

:01:33. > :01:35.But there are fears not enotgh victims will come to tell

:01:36. > :01:49.It is a lot to expect them to come forward again and real estate

:01:50. > :01:54.experiences, but for this to be successful and worthwhile, lore

:01:55. > :01:58.victims do need to come forward otherwise work of the enquiry is

:01:59. > :01:59.going to be compromised, and that is the last thing anyone wants to

:02:00. > :02:01.happen. This inquiry comes almost sdven

:02:02. > :02:04.years after a police investhgation here at Haut de la Garenne sparked

:02:05. > :02:07.hundreds of complaints about sexual That resulted

:02:08. > :02:10.in 192 people reporting 532 offences And today it was made clear

:02:11. > :02:23.by inquiry lawyers that abuse has happened across the island's care

:02:24. > :02:35.homes including beatings, c`nings The enquiry will go on throtghout

:02:36. > :02:40.the summer, but could last for over a year. The panel heard abott the

:02:41. > :02:45.children homes and foster homes where the alleged abuse happened.

:02:46. > :02:46.The personal stories of those abused will probably not be heard for a few

:02:47. > :02:51.weeks yet. Victims can come forward

:02:52. > :02:53.at any time during the inquhry to And although wrongs

:02:54. > :02:57.in the past might not be righted, the hope is any lessons learnt will

:02:58. > :03:00.protect children in the futtre. A Guernsey lorry driver has been

:03:01. > :03:03.cleared of causing the death of a cyclist

:03:04. > :03:05.by dangerous driving and drhving The nine jurors found 50`ye`r`old

:03:06. > :03:12.Nigel Simon not guilty 59`year`old David Allison dhed

:03:13. > :03:15.after his bike collided with a Just over a year

:03:16. > :03:24.since one man died here and today Nigel Simon was cleared

:03:25. > :03:28.of causing the death of a cxclist by dangerous driving or driving

:03:29. > :03:31.without due care and attenthon. David Allison was riding

:03:32. > :03:35.along this cycle path during rush He was wearing a cycle helmdt

:03:36. > :03:40.and high visibility vest. As he neared Salerie Corner,

:03:41. > :03:44.a blue lorry driven by Mr Shmon Mr Allison then slammed

:03:45. > :03:47.on his brakes, skidded and fell off his bike,

:03:48. > :03:51.lying in the path of the trtck. He was then run over by the heavy

:03:52. > :03:57.goods vehicle and died at the So if Mr Simon wasn't driving

:03:58. > :04:01.carelessly and dangerously, Today

:04:02. > :04:05.in court the judge mentioned the odd configuration where the cycle path

:04:06. > :04:08.merges with the footpath and that the lines were so obscure that the

:04:09. > :04:11.police had to call the Environment And

:04:12. > :04:14.at the scene this afternoon Guernsey cyclists say the States needs to do

:04:15. > :04:28.more to protect the public. The most important thing is to get

:04:29. > :04:32.people cycling. The more cyclists on the road, the more people are aware

:04:33. > :04:36.of them, the better they re`ct to them and the more they understand

:04:37. > :04:39.how they will react in traffic. We need to get more people cycling and

:04:40. > :04:46.the States of Guernsey understand that and we need them to make the

:04:47. > :04:49.parts better thought out, more thought through, without it being an

:04:50. > :05:00.afterthought. We have got them but they are bit of an afterthotght

:05:01. > :05:03.Behind me, the family were clearly relieved when the not guiltx

:05:04. > :05:05.verdicts were read out, and it brings a long period `` the end to a

:05:06. > :05:11.long period of uncertainty. The boss of Aurigny has been in

:05:12. > :05:14.Alderney today reassuring islanders they will continue to operate

:05:15. > :05:16.services and won?t raise prhces when Dornier Aircraft are due to replace

:05:17. > :05:20.the ageing Trilanders flying from Alderney to Guernsey

:05:21. > :05:22.and Southampton. At a public meeting last wedk,

:05:23. > :05:25.concerns were raised about But Mark Darby said

:05:26. > :05:39.the airline is here to stay. We have no intention of cancelling

:05:40. > :05:42.the route to Southhampton, `nd we have no intention of raising fears.

:05:43. > :05:46.So we really don't know where these stories are coming from, but it is

:05:47. > :05:48.just scaremongering and it has got people very worried, but I think

:05:49. > :05:52.those fears are groundless. Toxic ash

:05:53. > :05:54.from Jersey has begun to be shipped The poisonous waste is left

:05:55. > :06:06.behind after rubbish is burned Transport

:06:07. > :06:07.and Technical Services say ht's a significant milestone in lanaging

:06:08. > :06:15.hazardous waste at La Collette. It has taken a long time to get

:06:16. > :06:22.these permits in place, but that is now all in place, so the Ashes are

:06:23. > :06:27.on their way. This Thursday we are getting rid of 12 trailer loads of

:06:28. > :06:31.the ash and we will get rid of all of it over the next few months.

:06:32. > :06:33.You're watching the BBC in the Channel Islands.

:06:51. > :07:16.Oliver Farrimond has been looking at some of their hopefuls.

:07:17. > :07:19.Guernsey has won six Commonwealth medals ` five of them in shooting.

:07:20. > :07:24.Picking up the pistol in Carnoustie will be Nikki Trebart but she will

:07:25. > :07:33.It is going to be really totgh, but I would like to shoot a personal

:07:34. > :07:37.best and getting to the fin`l. seeded seventh for the Glasgow

:07:38. > :07:43.games. He's aiming for a top`four finish after crashing out in the

:07:44. > :07:54.third round four years ago. I am competing against the top eight

:07:55. > :08:00.people in the world, but I would like to reach the semifinals.

:08:01. > :08:04.up the ten`person cycling tdam is Tobyn Horton. And with Bradley

:08:05. > :08:08.Wiggins and Mark Cavendish not competing in the road race, he's got

:08:09. > :08:13.A first for Guernsey will be Louis Plevin's entrx in Judo

:08:14. > :08:24.It is daunting, but it is jtst about getting not too daunted bec`use then

:08:25. > :08:27.you will not perform. I am dxcited, it will be a cracking event.

:08:28. > :08:30.A first for Guernsey will be Louis Plevin's entrx in Judo

:08:31. > :08:33.and former youth Olympics t`ble tennis star Alice Loveridge will

:08:34. > :08:36.line up alongside Dawn Morg`n. Courtney Butcher is Guernsex?s only

:08:37. > :08:40.female in an impressive looking swimming team. It includes Duropean

:08:41. > :08:45.Junior Swimming Championship Miles Munro. He will be encouraged by

:08:46. > :08:50.As the team gathered on home soil for the

:08:51. > :08:56.There would loads of us going swimming, so it will be gre`t to

:08:57. > :08:58.have a lot of them around md when I am racing. And I have a lot of

:08:59. > :08:59.family coming with me. As the

:09:00. > :09:01.team gathered on home soil for the last time before the games,

:09:02. > :09:06.Guernsey's Chef de Mission was clear years ago ` they'll be hoping

:09:39. > :09:41.live video streams availabld on your computer, tablet, mobile phone or

:09:42. > :09:44.connected TV. And our reporter Edward Sault will be bringing US the

:09:45. > :09:47.latest from Glasgow every evening, on how our Channel Islands `thletes

:09:48. > :10:05.are getting on. What will ever be like? `` the

:10:06. > :10:08.weather. It will be round about 20 degrees tomorrow for the opdning

:10:09. > :10:14.ceremony, and there is a very small chance there could be a thundery

:10:15. > :10:17.shower for the opening cerelony but the weather is fine, which we could

:10:18. > :10:23.not have predicted in Scotl`nd at this time of year. Back homd it is

:10:24. > :10:28.hotter, and we see temperattres tomorrow getting back up to 25 26

:10:29. > :10:39.degrees. A bit misty at first, with a bit more in the way of cloud, and

:10:40. > :10:43.feeling close during the dax. `` temperatures 25 or 26 degreds. We

:10:44. > :10:47.will see more cloud coming hn from the east, and this weather front

:10:48. > :10:50.will stay out to the West, which is the focal point of showers `re

:10:51. > :10:55.building in Glasgow late tolorrow. For all of us, Thursday will have

:10:56. > :11:02.slightly more cloud around `nd a small chance of if you've showers

:11:03. > :11:07.developing. It will be dry overnight tonight, turning misty in places,

:11:08. > :11:12.with local load tomorrow morning. Temperatures now lower than 16

:11:13. > :11:16.degrees. Tomorrow is another lovely day with plenty of sunshine, with

:11:17. > :11:31.more cloud through the day. That is the difference to today. But still

:11:32. > :11:44.very warm, 22`25 degrees. The times of high water:

:11:45. > :11:54.As we head towards the weekdnd, it will be a little bit cooler. That is

:11:55. > :11:57.also a chance of some showers on Thursday.

:11:58. > :12:04.Thank you very much. That is it from me. Tomorrow evening we are

:12:05. > :12:13.reporting live from Glasgow. Now, over to spotlight.

:12:14. > :12:17.taking people to hospitals, school and public transport. Looking across

:12:18. > :12:20.the south`west at transport, you looked at the issue of transport

:12:21. > :12:26.there a case for that transport there a case for that transport

:12:27. > :12:30.system to be subsidised in some way? There is a case for transport from

:12:31. > :12:35.the Isles of Scilly to be subsidised, and we have verx clear

:12:36. > :12:40.evidence about people being cut off from central services and from

:12:41. > :12:43.employment. Discussions are taking place between the Isles of Scilly

:12:44. > :12:48.Council and the Department for Transport about how to addrdss this.

:12:49. > :12:53.I hope that that leads to a good result. Thank you very much indeed.

:13:19. > :13:22.A report by Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabularx

:13:25. > :13:26.with a lower budget than most other forces.

:13:27. > :13:30.It also highlighted plans for an alliance with Dorset Polhce.

:13:31. > :13:32.The Devon and Cornwall forcd admits officer numbers have been

:13:33. > :13:39.cut significantly in order to make savings.

:13:40. > :13:47.What we have done is try to make the cuts are in areas which havd not

:13:48. > :13:52.impacted upon the front lind. That said, when you look at the 3000

:13:53. > :13:58.officers we had in 2010 compared to the 3040 we have now, that hs quite

:13:59. > :13:59.big cuts. Undoubtedly we ard looking at how we can reduce impact that

:14:00. > :14:03.has. for the start of the

:14:04. > :14:06.Commonwealth Games tomorrow. The Queen?s Baton arrived in Glasgow

:14:07. > :14:07.this morning. Here it is being carried by

:14:08. > :14:10.the singer Susan Boyle. but Plymouth divers Tom Daldy,

:14:11. > :14:14.Tonia Couch and Sarah Barrow are facing a race against thme

:14:15. > :14:17.to make the opening of the Games. The trio, along with

:14:18. > :14:19.other members of the team, were on a flight back from

:14:20. > :14:22.Shanghai when engine troubld forced an emergency landing in Russia.

:14:23. > :14:33.Brent Pilnick has more. The team of British divers were

:14:34. > :14:40.returning from the World Cup, where Tom Daley finished fourth in the

:14:41. > :14:44.men's ten metres events. Thdre are Virgin Atlantic flight left

:14:45. > :14:48.Shanghai, but one of the engines malfunctioned over Mongolia. After

:14:49. > :14:52.dumping fuel, the pilot was almost forced to ditch in a river before

:14:53. > :14:57.making an emergency landing in a military base in a Russian town

:14:58. > :15:00.After a night in a hotel, the passengers eventually continued

:15:01. > :15:04.their journey this morning `nd are expected back in London verx soon.

:15:05. > :15:07.All three of Plymouth's divdrs went to social media to tell everybody

:15:08. > :15:11.they were safe. Tom Daley posted this photograph of the pland

:15:12. > :15:16.jettisoning its fuel before it made the emergency landing. Toni` Couch

:15:17. > :15:24.posted a photo of the plane safely on the tarmac and the passengers

:15:25. > :15:29.disembark in. `` disembarking. What effect will the delay have on their

:15:30. > :15:33.preparations with the games? They will have a chat with the

:15:34. > :15:36.psychologist to get over it. They will be freaking out that they have

:15:37. > :15:41.missed a couple of training sessions but they are prepared for the

:15:42. > :15:45.Commonwealth Games, it won't matter. Before Sarah Barrow and Tonha Couch

:15:46. > :15:49.left, they were in the final throes of preparation for the Commonwealth

:15:50. > :15:54.Games. Both in the gym and diving off the high board. Under the

:15:55. > :16:03.watchful eye of their head coach and the banks. `` and the banks. You see

:16:04. > :16:15.everybody sat together in the foot hole, it is very different. There is

:16:16. > :16:18.excitement about the whole thing. Going to Glasgow, it will bd

:16:19. > :16:24.incredible and a massive shock. We are going to aim for it, but we have

:16:25. > :16:33.beaten everyone that is there. It can be done. 14`year`old Matthew

:16:34. > :16:37.Dixon is already in Glasgow. He is settling into the athlete's village

:16:38. > :16:44.in readiness for his events next week. Being at the games is amazing.

:16:45. > :16:50.One of those big bonuses, so it is good. Did you watch the last

:16:51. > :16:57.Commonwealth Games? Yes, Delhi in India, watching that on the TV at

:16:58. > :17:03.home hoping to go there one day I have made it to this one. All of the

:17:04. > :17:06.divers are expected to make it to Glasgow on time, but who knows if

:17:07. > :17:12.their ordeal in the air will affect how they perform at the gamds?

:17:13. > :17:14.Now, exactly a year ago tod`y Devon and Cornwall Police

:17:15. > :17:16.assessed their very first b`tch of home grown canine recruits.

:17:17. > :17:18.Rather than buying in dogs, the force decided

:17:19. > :17:21.to breed their own, using existing police dogs as the parents.

:17:22. > :17:24.The seven puppies that resulted are called the A litter,

:17:25. > :17:29.and today the first of them graduated in super`fast timd.

:17:30. > :17:40.Spotlight's Andrea Ormsby w`s at the passing out ceremony.

:17:41. > :17:47.Pictures on passing out tod`y, the dogs here are from the A litter

:17:48. > :17:54.They have made it through every test ahead of their brothers and sisters.

:17:55. > :17:57.A very proud day indeed. I cannot believe it is just 12 months ago

:17:58. > :18:06.that they were running around in my garden, he write down trainhng my

:18:07. > :18:13.old puppies `` here I am. Exactly one year ago, this is the A litter

:18:14. > :18:18.having its first`ever assessment. A couple of days later, the sdven were

:18:19. > :18:25.handed over to their puppy walkers, the people who bring them up for the

:18:26. > :18:28.first year or so of their lhves This one went to live with Steve and

:18:29. > :18:32.Maria in Cornwall, and it took awhile for to settle in. Whdn we

:18:33. > :18:41.first got him he was lovely. But no... We think he is horrible. I

:18:42. > :18:46.still would not swap. He answers me back, but he also likes cuddles He

:18:47. > :18:54.has certainly got a lot of character. He was so outstanding he

:18:55. > :18:59.started police dog training early. They are here to see the box

:19:00. > :19:03.graduate. It is a lovely fedling to know that he still remembers me at

:19:04. > :19:08.the same time it is sad to see him staring into someone else's eyes and

:19:09. > :19:12.being fonds towards someone else. I had a really good time with him

:19:13. > :19:18.cannot regret anything I have done. A proud day to see him doing his

:19:19. > :19:22.job. It was a sad day when he went, I did not realise he was gohng for

:19:23. > :19:28.good. Having come today, I realise they are his family now and I am

:19:29. > :19:33.happy. We have done a good job. The puppy walkers were honoured with a

:19:34. > :19:36.crucial part they have playdd. It is a great day for them and thd dogs, a

:19:37. > :19:42.number of friends and familx are here to see the police dog handlers

:19:43. > :19:45.passing out. It has been a rigorous 30 weeks of training for thdm. We

:19:46. > :19:53.know we have a really good puality dog, on the streets of Devon and

:19:54. > :19:59.Cornwall. Of the seven pupphes, it is not all of them will eventually

:20:07. > :20:08.Must have been so hard to ghve them up!

:20:09. > :20:11.Now you may remember the story last night about Suzanna Hext

:21:37. > :21:42.Roman style riding, be in no doubt it is incredibly difficult. It is

:21:43. > :21:46.really scary and gives you lajor leg burn mainly because of the fear

:21:51. > :21:57.run off at any moment and you have to trust completely training but

:21:58. > :22:04.won't. They only walk a few paces. And did I mention, it is rather

:22:05. > :22:07.dangerous? A couple of years ago, I was standing up on my original team

:22:08. > :22:14.and I came off the back, landed on my lower back and broke a couple of

:22:15. > :22:18.my vertebrae, which was a m`ssive wake`up call about the fact that it

:22:19. > :22:22.is dangerous and painful. I could not leave any stone unturned as far
