:00:10. > :00:29.Here in Glasgow, a top ten finish for a Guernsey cyclist, and crunch
:00:30. > :00:34.matches for our badminton and table tennis players. We'll bring you all
:00:35. > :00:39.the action. Ic the next couple of days a bit of a change for the
:00:40. > :00:42.islands, as it turns more unsettled. I'll have all the details later in
:00:43. > :00:52.the programme. After a wait of 24 years, Jersey is
:00:53. > :00:57.a step closer to a Commonwealth Games medal tonight. It's after the
:00:58. > :01:10.island's bowls pairs lost to South Africa earlier. Live to Glasgow now
:01:11. > :01:13.and Edward Sault. Yes, Clare. There really is a sense of excitement
:01:14. > :01:17.after that result today after the disappointment in shooting for Team
:01:18. > :01:19.Jersey this week. Now the focus is on bowls, and although Jersey's
:01:20. > :01:22.Katie Nixon and Lindsey Greechan lost to South Africa, it means
:01:23. > :01:34.they're now in the third place play`off and touching distance of a
:01:35. > :01:37.bronze medal. A bronze medal is in touching distance for Jersey
:01:38. > :01:41.tonight. Emma Chambers brings you all the action.
:01:42. > :01:44.Warming up for their toughest match. Jersey lawn bowlers Katie Nixon and
:01:45. > :01:49.Lindsey Greechan were up against Australia in the pairs quarterfinal.
:01:50. > :01:52.The first big step to medal success. Until today, Jersey haven't had to
:01:53. > :01:56.win every match. They've just had to score enough points to finish in the
:01:57. > :02:00.top two of their group to qualify. Today, that all changes. Jersey have
:02:01. > :02:03.to win in order to get through to the semifinals. It was a positive
:02:04. > :02:08.start for Jersey. They were the first to score, with a four`point
:02:09. > :02:13.lead. But Australia soon caught up and dominated most of the game.
:02:14. > :02:19.Jersey held on and made sure every point counted. By 15 ends the score
:02:20. > :02:25.was equal with everything still to play for. A tense watch for
:02:26. > :02:29.supporters. Jersey put on an astonishing performance. This last
:02:30. > :02:31.bowl from Greechan sealed the win 16`11 against Australia, securing
:02:32. > :02:43.the islanders a place in the semifinal. A powerful but daunting
:02:44. > :02:48.position for the Lawn bowls team. It's the biggest event really.
:02:49. > :02:53.Jersey's never ever won a medal, so to get this far now, it is crucial.
:02:54. > :02:58.These chances don't come along. That's the hardest thing. Over the
:02:59. > :03:03.years as people have got to this point where we are now and fallen at
:03:04. > :03:12.the last hurdle. Obviously we want to do it and we'll try our hardest
:03:13. > :03:16.but it is another step. During the short break, the rain
:03:17. > :03:18.poured. But the sun shone as the semifinals began. Jersey were
:03:19. > :03:21.playing against South Africa. A tough opponent. Again the islanders
:03:22. > :03:25.were the first to score. But their luck soon changed. The jack kept
:03:26. > :03:28.getting surrounded by a sea of South Africa's bowls. Halfway through the
:03:29. > :03:32.match, South Africa were in a comfortable lead and there was no
:03:33. > :03:36.stopping them. The points difference grew wider and wider, making it
:03:37. > :03:42.harder for the Jersey pair to catch up. They scored a few points, but
:03:43. > :03:49.not enough to qualify for the final. South Africa won 20`9 in 17 ends.
:03:50. > :03:52.The morning of elation was followed by an afternoon of disappointment
:03:53. > :03:54.for the Jersey pair, but there is still a bronze`tinted glimmer of
:03:55. > :04:08.hope to play for. So, that playoff is against Northern
:04:09. > :04:11.Ireland in the morning. My colleague, Tim Pryor, spoke to
:04:12. > :04:19.Lindsey and Katie after that defeat by South Africa. So not to be for
:04:20. > :04:23.Jersey's duo in that semifinal against South Africa. They are
:04:24. > :04:27.alongside me now, Lindsey Greechan and Katie Nixon. How are you feeling
:04:28. > :04:31.after semifinal defeat but still with a chance to win a medal here?
:04:32. > :04:37.Still made up we have got a chance of a medal but it is really
:04:38. > :04:41.difficult. I feel a bit deflated. We didn't play to our best, so a
:04:42. > :04:44.business disappointed. Katie, how excited are you about this
:04:45. > :04:50.opportunity going into the match tomorrow to possibly win Jersey's
:04:51. > :04:54.first Commonwealth games medal in 24 years? I'm glad we've got another
:04:55. > :04:59.chance. Disappointed for the next couple of hours but we'll pick
:05:00. > :05:07.ourselves up tomorrow and we'll beite fighting for it. Do you think
:05:08. > :05:12.you'll sleep well tonight? No! We should be alright. We've slept well
:05:13. > :05:16.every day we've Ben here because we are so tired with all the bowling.
:05:17. > :05:22.Get a good night's sleep and we've still got a chance. Disappoint here
:05:23. > :05:28.at Kelvin Grove today but a chance to put that right tomorrow and maybe
:05:29. > :05:35.win Jersey a medal in nearly a quarter of a century. That play`off
:05:36. > :05:46.match is at 8.45am tomorrow. That's against Northern Ireland.
:05:47. > :05:48.Elsewhere, a top ten finish for Jersey's
:05:49. > :05:56.Was former England number one versus current England number one on the
:05:57. > :05:59.badminton court. Elizabeth Cann played for England at the last
:06:00. > :06:04.Commonwealth Games. This time she's playing for Jersey and was against
:06:05. > :06:08.Sarah Walker in the last 16. They expect that Elizabeth can follow
:06:09. > :06:13.pace in the beginning but they also expect that Sarah Walker will be
:06:14. > :06:17.pulling away. Walker took the first game and Elizabeth Cann won the
:06:18. > :06:23.second. It all came down to a thrilling finish in game three. Cann
:06:24. > :06:29.pulled clear. Walker fought back, but could she hold her nerve?
:06:30. > :06:35.COMMENTATOR: She's missed it! But she didn't miss many more, as walker
:06:36. > :06:41.held on and beat Cann 21`18 in the last game. Dawn Morgan and Alice
:06:42. > :06:51.Loveridge won one and lost one in their
:06:52. > :06:56.lost to the same Canadian player in the singles last night. There are no
:06:57. > :07:01.Channel Islanders left in the table tennis competition.
:07:02. > :07:06.On the road, Jezzy's Patrick McLoughlin pushed off with a Number
:07:07. > :07:12.Ten on his back. Little did he know he would come in tenth place with
:07:13. > :07:22.the impressive time of which 50 minutes 39en 64 seconds. We'll be at
:07:23. > :07:25.that bowls match tomorrow. You can keep up to date with the
:07:26. > :07:30.action as it happens throughout the day on BBC Radio Guernsey and BBC
:07:31. > :07:31.Radio Jersey tomorrow, as well as online. More from Glasgow on BBC One
:07:32. > :08:54.tomorrow night, airport without it. Staying with
:08:55. > :08:59.travel news. Condor is bringing in another ship to carry goods to the
:09:00. > :09:04.Channel Islands. It will help bring freight supplies back to norm while
:09:05. > :09:09.the Clipper is repaired. It was damaged two weeks ago.
:09:10. > :09:12.The Holidays for Heroes shop in Jersey has closed after the site was
:09:13. > :09:15.sold to a developer. The charity, which gives holidays to injured
:09:16. > :09:18.servicemen, doubled its income after being given the space for free in
:09:19. > :09:22.Chateau Plaisir nearly two years ago. Now organisers are hoping to
:09:23. > :09:28.find a new location for the shop, which sells books, clothes and
:09:29. > :09:32.furniture. As I understand it, the site is being sold tomorrow and
:09:33. > :09:38.obviously everything on site has to leave. We knew this day would come.
:09:39. > :09:43.We are obviously sad but we are still so grateful for two brilliant
:09:44. > :09:47.years. As July comes to a close and we look ahead to August, David
:09:48. > :09:51.Braine has news of a weather change on the cards.
:09:52. > :10:01.Good evening. We've got unsettled Weatherheading our way in the next
:10:02. > :10:07.two days. A risk of showers as we start the weekend. After a dry start
:10:08. > :10:11.and some sunny spells, showers will develop and become widespread by the
:10:12. > :10:15.end of the day. For our athletes taking part in the bowling, tomorrow
:10:16. > :10:19.could be damp in Glasgow, with outbreaks of rain. Turning brighter
:10:20. > :10:23.towards the end of the morning and afternoon. A top temperature of
:10:24. > :10:28.around 15`16 degrees. The reason for the change, a lot
:10:29. > :10:33.more cloud. That is sweeping in off the Atlantic. An area of low
:10:34. > :10:36.pressure will gradually push these weather systems closer. This is the
:10:37. > :10:40.middle of the day tomorrow. Notice this line of rain off the western
:10:41. > :10:43.coast of France for the middle of the day. That's the threat of
:10:44. > :10:47.showers coming our way as we move through the day. Certainly for
:10:48. > :10:51.Saturday we've got low pressure in charge and plenty of showers to
:10:52. > :10:56.contend with. Not much happening overnight. We may
:10:57. > :11:04.increase the amount of medium and high`level cloud. Generally clouding
:11:05. > :11:12.up by dawn, with the chance of a few showers towardsed any and Guernsey.
:11:13. > :11:19.`` towards Alderney and Guernsey. For the rest of us we keep a lot of
:11:20. > :11:24.cloud. By the end of the afternoon the showers start to appear.
:11:25. > :11:44.Top temperature tomorrow 19`21 degrees.
:11:45. > :12:39.More showers on Saturday but drier on Monday and Tuesday.
:12:40. > :12:42.Justice says Channings Wood is a safe and decent prison with low
:12:43. > :12:46.levels of violence. Mainly roadworks are planned on the
:12:47. > :12:50.A 38 which will last a year. It is to replace a bridge that has
:12:51. > :12:57.concrete cancer. The work is due to start in the spring and will involve
:12:58. > :13:01.camera flows and narrow lanes. Life Guards have released this
:13:02. > :13:06.footage of a young girl being rescued to highlight the danger of
:13:07. > :13:10.rip curse. She got into difficulty at Chapel Porthnear St Agnes
:13:11. > :13:16.yesterday. She's the ninth person to be saved on the beach in recent
:13:17. > :13:20.days. Storms have created offshore Sandbanks which allow rip currents
:13:21. > :13:27.to form. It's been another successful day at
:13:28. > :13:33.the Commonwealth Games with two silver medals guaranteed. Tonia
:13:34. > :13:42.Couch and Sandra Barrow have been in action, alongside England's youngest
:13:43. > :13:49.member. The first dive in a major games for 13`year`old Victoria
:13:50. > :13:55.Vincents. What a marvellous opening round dive! And not a hint of
:13:56. > :13:59.nerves. Just 13 years of age. For VV as she was known it was the
:14:00. > :14:02.experience to experience the atmosphere of the Games without
:14:03. > :14:07.pressure. Victoria won the British title in June and was initially told
:14:08. > :14:13.she was too young to compete in the Games but was included in aen an
:14:14. > :14:19.appeal. She did more than hold her own, finishing 8 in the the
:14:20. > :14:25.rankings. One place ahead of Sarah Barrow. The other half of that
:14:26. > :14:32.pairing a fared before. Tonia Couch has to fancy the chance of another
:14:33. > :14:39.medal. What ative from Tonya! Back on dry land the good times keep on
:14:40. > :14:45.rolling for Natalie. She has at least another silver to add to the
:14:46. > :14:48.one she won in the singles. Her fiance is looking to get his hands
:14:49. > :15:06.on one of which his own. Sophie is part of the triples team
:15:07. > :15:11.taking on Australia this evening. We've played a lot of games now. We
:15:12. > :15:17.all play together, are all comfortable as a unit. Whatever
:15:18. > :15:19.happens, she's guaranteed to walk away with at least a silver and
:15:20. > :15:43.maybe a gold. Team England has also excel inside
:15:44. > :15:47.the Commonwealth games pool. Plymouth's John Rudd has played a
:15:48. > :15:52.mainly part in that success as the England swimming coach. He joined us
:15:53. > :15:56.earlier today. John, first of all many congratulations on a fantastic
:15:57. > :16:01.performance by the team. Let's talk a bit about Ben Proud. Certainly
:16:02. > :16:05.living up to his name for this recently. What did you make of his
:16:06. > :16:10.performance? We were thrilled obviously. We knew he was one of the
:16:11. > :16:13.fastest swimmers in the world going into the competition. He swims
:16:14. > :16:18.events where the margins are so small you never know what the
:16:19. > :16:24.outcome is going to be. To come back with two individual gold Ed medals
:16:25. > :16:29.and breaking the individual and Games medals, we were thrilled. Will
:16:30. > :16:35.this success change him, do you think? I doubt it. He is extremely
:16:36. > :16:39.gentle. A very quiet and unassuming young man. I think there was no`one
:16:40. > :16:43.more surprised than him when he managed to win those two events. I
:16:44. > :16:49.don't see him changing at all. It is just the way that he. Is his natural
:16:50. > :16:54.persona is just to be quiet and unassuming. How have you worked to
:16:55. > :16:59.him to get him up to this level? What's the training schedule like?
:17:00. > :17:04.It is pretty brute A even for an event that only lasts 21`22 seconds.
:17:05. > :17:09.He swims nine times a week. He's in the gym a lot. He spends a lot of
:17:10. > :17:15.time with the physiotherapist trying to make him better in terms of his
:17:16. > :17:22.muscular structure. And he has to rest a lot. He has to consume quite
:17:23. > :17:26.a lot of food. But he's also doing a degree at the University of St Mark
:17:27. > :17:31.and St John at the same time, so his life is pretty hectic and he's got a
:17:32. > :17:36.lot to fit in. You work with Ben on a weekly basis, but as coach for
:17:37. > :17:41.team England you've been coaching the whole team. How different sit
:17:42. > :17:47.working for swimmers for a short time as opposed to a weekly basis?
:17:48. > :17:52.It was a challenge. We wanted an identity for England. We said from
:17:53. > :17:57.the outset we thought Scottish people find it quite easy to feel
:17:58. > :18:01.Scottish and Welsh people to feel Welsh, but English people tend to
:18:02. > :18:06.feel British and we wanted to create something that was very much an
:18:07. > :18:11.English identity. We had a seven`day preparation camp at the Aquatics
:18:12. > :18:17.Centre, the Olympic pool. We used that to try and create that identity
:18:18. > :18:20.and to feel part of a team. I conducted one to ones with each of
:18:21. > :18:23.the athletes, which took two`and`a`half days to do. A long
:18:24. > :18:28.process. But by the end of that we had struck a bond, all of us, and
:18:29. > :18:34.had a great group of coaches working with me as well. Tremendous support
:18:35. > :18:37.staff. We used that time wisely I think. By the time we arrived in
:18:38. > :18:42.Glasgow, we knew who we were and what we were about. Part of that
:18:43. > :18:46.team we should mention was Liam Tancock from Exeter. He did
:18:47. > :18:51.remarkably well considering he was coming back from injury. He's a bit
:18:52. > :18:54.of a rough year. I think people had written him off. One of the people
:18:55. > :19:02.who hadn't done that was Liam himself. To win two medals in the
:19:03. > :19:08.individual events. He swam the medley relay heat which meant he got
:19:09. > :19:12.a gold, which means he's a triple gold medallist, three Commonwealth
:19:13. > :19:17.Games in a row, a hell of an achievement for anybody. He is
:19:18. > :19:22.always great value to have on the team, Liam. He's so experienced.
:19:23. > :19:28.He's the old man of the team. He brings all of that pivot with He's
:19:29. > :19:31.so experienced. He's the old man of the team. He brings all of that
:19:32. > :19:37.pivot with him. `` all of that positivity with him. I would love to
:19:38. > :19:45.be part of Rio. My complications are that I don't just coach British
:19:46. > :19:51.athletes. Hopefully I will still be looking after them. I'm charily be
:19:52. > :19:56.involved with Rio in one way or the other, doing the best for all of my
:19:57. > :19:59.athletes. Congratulations on the success of team England at the
:20:00. > :20:06.Commonwealth Games. Thank you for joining us Thank you. A pilot has
:20:07. > :20:13.had a lucky escape today at RNAS Culdrose when his aircraft appeared
:20:14. > :20:19.to lose power and crash`landed. The pilot escaped without injury. The
:20:20. > :20:23.crowds were treated to a spectacular aerial display, including the star
:20:24. > :20:26.of the show, the vulcan bomber. David George has been at Culdrose
:20:27. > :20:30.for us throughout the day. Even before this afternoon's main
:20:31. > :20:43.airshow started, the crowds were treated to this mad display. The
:20:44. > :20:52.aircraft's call sign is golf oak o whisky India Zulu, gee whizz. The
:20:53. > :20:57.star of today's show must be the Avro vulcan bomber. It carried
:20:58. > :21:04.Britain's nuclear deterrent in the 1960s and the pilot today is man who
:21:05. > :21:09.bombed Port Stanley runway in the Falklands war. It's got huge
:21:10. > :21:17.controls, big engines and it is very manoeuvrable. It is a delight to fly
:21:18. > :21:21.in a display. Martin told me before he set off for that flight that most
:21:22. > :21:24.of the noise we are hearing is the air sucked into those four huge
:21:25. > :21:38.engines. It is a very, very inspiring
:21:39. > :21:42.machine. It is huge. It also has this amazing howl. That's what I
:21:43. > :21:46.think people love to hear. The displays are all carefully
:21:47. > :21:52.co`ordinated by the team in the control tower. We have a sequence
:21:53. > :21:56.worked out minute by minute. We were flexible with that. There'll be
:21:57. > :22:00.little slippages left and right but not by much. The important thing is
:22:01. > :22:04.that we keep ill calm. The aim of which the day is to put on a safe
:22:05. > :22:10.and enjoyable display for the public. The familiar search and
:22:11. > :22:17.rescue Sea King of 771 squadron is popular for a look around And in the
:22:18. > :22:21.last 24 hours all of the Sea Kings that have within in Afghanistan are
:22:22. > :22:25.back home, preparing to return to the sea. It won't be nice istan are
:22:26. > :22:32.back home, preparing to return to the sea. It won't be nice and `` it
:22:33. > :22:39.won't be hot and dusty. It it will be good. I'm looking forward to it.
:22:40. > :22:44.Back in the air and the Culdrose weather stayed fair. A Canberra and
:22:45. > :22:49.two Hawker Hunters shining in the afternoon sun. And no airshow is
:22:50. > :22:51.complete without what must be Britain's most famous aircraft of
:22:52. > :23:07.all time. Some wonderful displays. Wasn't that
:23:08. > :23:11.vulcan bomber incredible. The noise on television doesn't do it justice.
:23:12. > :23:16.As David said, some pretty decent weather for air day. But things have
:23:17. > :23:21.about to change? I think so. I think we are turning the corner as we move
:23:22. > :23:26.through this evening and overnight. Much more unsettled weather. The
:23:27. > :23:30.main area of low pressure a feature of the weather for the start of the
:23:31. > :23:35.weekend but it does move out of the way swiftly, so expect an
:23:36. > :23:39.improvement on Sunday. Tomorrow is cloudy. Showers. In fact the showers
:23:40. > :23:44.will link together to give more persistent rain. It will feel cooler
:23:45. > :23:47.too with all the cloud and less sunshine around. The showers have
:23:48. > :23:52.just been to the north of us today. That line of showers I think will
:23:53. > :23:58.continue to move up towards Wales. Overnight I think a fair amount of
:23:59. > :24:01.dry weather. The chance of a shower anywhere tonight. We have a lot of
:24:02. > :24:09.cloud around. Temperatures not as low as last night. A stream of
:24:10. > :24:13.showers to the north Devon coast. 14`15 degrees. But tomorrow will be
:24:14. > :24:20.a different start to the day compared to today. This was earlier
:24:21. > :24:26.today, where we had some sunshine, all be bit briefly. Everything is
:24:27. > :24:30.looking splendid, the flora and fauna appreciating the warm weather
:24:31. > :24:37.and a lock of which the blackberries have ripened. This is cal stock.
:24:38. > :24:43.That cloud gave spits of right rain. Culdrose was lucky to stay bright
:24:44. > :24:47.and dry. Tomorrow these pictures may look different as we see more cloud
:24:48. > :24:53.and outbreaks of rain. Through the day we have one strand
:24:54. > :24:57.of showers that drifts along the Bristol channel coast. From the
:24:58. > :25:01.south`west a line of much more persistent rain. By the end of the
:25:02. > :25:05.day it probably gives us all a bit of wet weather. Little if any rain
:25:06. > :25:11.into parts of Somerset and Dorset. It is in the east that we stay
:25:12. > :25:15.largely dry, but cloudy late in the day and evening. The winds are
