:00:23. > :00:26.The fixed price of milk in Guernsey could be scrapped as part

:00:27. > :00:28.of a major overhaul of the island's dairy industry.

:00:29. > :00:31.It would give shops the powdr to charge what they want and ahms to

:00:32. > :00:36.So this is where it starts ` the Guernsey cow.

:00:37. > :00:38.The backbone of the dairy industry, although the cows themselves are

:00:39. > :00:42.And the States want to not only protect this breed, but the

:00:43. > :00:46.The dairy industry has of course changed over the xears

:00:47. > :00:48.but the report, out today, says compared to a decade ago,

:00:49. > :00:52.And the aim is to make sure that remains the case.

:00:53. > :01:05.Firstly for farmers, with milk quotas scrapped.

:01:06. > :01:15.Really they've put a false ceiling to anybody's business. Perh`ps

:01:16. > :01:20.stopped any thoughts of exp`nsion. Whenever young people are interested

:01:21. > :01:23.in coming into the industry, you need to have room for

:01:24. > :01:25.To better protect farmers and the dairy, there won't be any

:01:26. > :01:36.We find ourselves in a position where we can bring in robust

:01:37. > :01:39.legislation so that we can ban milk imports and that gives farmdrs more

:01:40. > :01:42.The big change for consumers is that the fhxed

:01:43. > :01:50.price for milk will go, so shops can potentially charge what thex want.

:01:51. > :02:05.retailers the opportunity to discount milk. What may comd about

:02:06. > :02:06.is more and more milk sales drifting to the supermarkets who are able to

:02:07. > :02:07.do that. So big changes but ones

:02:08. > :02:09.which ultimately aim to makd sure the Guernsey cow earns its way

:02:10. > :02:12.and is here to stay. A 65`year`old man from Guernsey has

:02:13. > :02:15.been sentenced to 12 years hn prison for raping and indecently assaulting

:02:16. > :02:17.underage girls in the 1970s and 80s. Neil Hastie, a former taxi driver,

:02:18. > :02:20.was found guilty on three counts The judge said he lacked anx sense

:02:21. > :02:23.of remorse for his actions There was heartbreak for thd Jersey

:02:24. > :02:27.team in the Commonwealth Gales The lawn bowls women's pairs were

:02:28. > :02:32.in a bronze medal play`off latch It would have been

:02:33. > :02:37.the first Commonwealth Games medal And as Emma Chambers reports,

:02:38. > :02:44.it went down to the last end. Jersey Pair Katie Nixon and

:02:45. > :02:49.Lindsey Greechan were playing superbly in a match that cotld win

:02:50. > :02:52.Jersey their first medal By the halfway point,

:02:53. > :03:00.they were four points ahead of But this powerful bowl from

:03:01. > :03:06.Northern Ireland's Barbara Cameron They were now level

:03:07. > :03:17.at nine points each. With a bronze medal on the horizon,

:03:18. > :03:20.Jersey needed to keep their focus. Their supporters were feeling

:03:21. > :03:26.the tension. When they slipped behind

:03:27. > :03:28.in the seventeenth end, Gredchan It would all come down to the final

:03:29. > :03:41.end to decide the bronze medal. With one of Cameron's last bowls

:03:42. > :03:52.of the match, she smashed Jdrsey's By just one point,

:03:53. > :04:15.Northern Ireland had won It was a brilliant match and we

:04:16. > :04:23.thought we had it. It went down into the last 2 bowls so we are

:04:24. > :04:29.disappointed. You were leadhng and dominating the match and only fell

:04:30. > :04:36.behind twice in the whole g`me. We got a 2nd bowl and skip plaxed a

:04:37. > :04:41.good bowl and we hadn't really been dropping account so it was ` crucial

:04:42. > :04:43.end and we dropped a 4. But it we are just

:04:44. > :04:44.A disappointing and heartbrdaking end to what could have been Jersey's

:04:45. > :04:54.Meanwhile the Commonwealth Games has been applauded

:04:55. > :04:58.22 countries have sent disabled athletes to compete but nond have

:04:59. > :05:02.In a special report, Mike Whlkins looks at the reasons why and whether

:05:03. > :05:10.These para`athletes are havhng their chance to compete on a glob`l stage.

:05:11. > :05:14.22 countries have sent para`athletes to the Commonwealth Games

:05:15. > :05:19.One of those who would love to have been there is this Guernsey

:05:20. > :05:24.Sarah started swimming when she was four

:05:25. > :05:29.Following weeks in a coma, she suffered brain damage

:05:30. > :05:35.She's one of the island's top hopes for the next paralymphcs.

:05:36. > :05:39.But competing with the best comes at a cost, with travel,

:05:40. > :05:43.specialist equipment and someone to physically hdlp her.

:05:44. > :05:51.She says she doesn't really get any financial support on the island

:05:52. > :06:09.They could make it more equ`l like, for the disabled. I have contacted

:06:10. > :06:17.the sports commission because I want to swim in the national in November

:06:18. > :06:20.but in February I asked thel and I still haven't got a definitd answer

:06:21. > :06:35.Sarah is training hard behind me and it is not just the money. S`rah s

:06:36. > :06:37.disability category means that in some games, she won't

:06:38. > :06:38.Each disabled athlete falls into a category.

:06:39. > :06:40.For swimming there are categories ranging from S1 to S10.

:06:41. > :06:42.Sarah's classed as S5, but at the games in Glasgow, they're

:06:43. > :06:49.For more categories to open up, more countries need to be

:06:50. > :06:51.represented ` something the patron of Guernsey's Disability

:06:52. > :07:02.Alliance and former paralympian Tanni Grey Thompson is callhng for.

:07:03. > :07:09.Just a platform. There are ` lot of athletes competing here getting no

:07:10. > :07:14.coverage at home, but the Commonwealth Games gives thdm that.

:07:15. > :07:18.We need to get more countrids sending athletes and that mdans

:07:19. > :07:20.and education for disabled people. having programs

:07:21. > :07:23.So when will we see a Channdl Island para athlete competing

:07:24. > :07:26.Well, speaking from Glasgow, Guernsey's Sports Commission says

:07:27. > :07:32.efforts are under way but don't expect anything soon.

:07:33. > :07:41.At the moment we are trying to create the environment withhn sport

:07:42. > :07:44.that we can look to send a Paralympics team in the futtre but

:07:45. > :07:46.Taking away the financial and category obstacles,

:07:47. > :07:48.for athletes like Sarah, thd chance to compete is an opportunitx to be

:07:53. > :07:54.Good luck to Guernsey distance runner Sarah Mercier.

:07:55. > :07:56.Tomorrow, Sarah takes to the field in the 5,000`metrd women's

:07:57. > :08:15.Some of rain overnight across the channel islands and hopefully most

:08:16. > :08:19.of the heavy rain will be dtring the night because tomorrow gets better.

:08:20. > :08:23.Showery to start the weekend with frequent showers and blustery

:08:24. > :08:31.conditions but much brighter as we move into Sunday. Plenty of showers

:08:32. > :08:36.overnight, with more persistent rain and getting more windy. The

:08:37. > :08:42.southerly winds increase, bdcoming fresh by the morning. For mtch of

:08:43. > :08:48.the start of the day tomorrow, it is cloudy, breezy and with shower and

:08:49. > :08:56.brighter conditions after ltnchtime with westerly winds and temperatures

:08:57. > :09:01.down to 18 `19?C. Good visibility and a lot of dry weather to be had.

:09:02. > :09:10.As we better day for a real see possibly

:09:11. > :09:25.an isolated temperatures recover and it should

:09:26. > :09:44.be largely dry with Good evening. For some of us turning

:09:45. > :09:52.soggy this weekend. For others increasingly sunny. Don't make this

:09:53. > :09:56.the last forecast you see this weekend T rain could cause some

:09:57. > :10:00.problems. Sunshine will follow the rain from the south. Overnight a lot

:10:01. > :10:05.of rain from south-west England and south-west Wales. One or two

:10:06. > :10:09.thunderstorms, close to the London area, into East Anglia. Showers over

:10:10. > :10:13.Northern Ireland. A largely dry start to the day here. Further

:10:14. > :10:19.south, there will be rain around. Already signs of improvement across

:10:20. > :10:22.the far south-west at 10am. Patchy outbreaks of rain elsewhere across

:10:23. > :10:27.southern counties. Sharp showers through the day. Brighter spells

:10:28. > :10:31.between. Heavy and persistent rain across west Wales, up through the

:10:32. > :10:36.Irish Sea, into southern Scotland. The main focus of concern. Some

:10:37. > :10:37.question mark about how far west that
