:00:26. > :00:31.Channel Islands is who left their lives in World War I are being

:00:32. > :00:40.remembered to Dave. In Guernsey the lights have

:00:41. > :00:43.The thousands of Channel Islanders who lost their lives in World War

:00:44. > :00:46.People across the Islands have been asked to switch off all

:00:47. > :00:49.but one light at home tonight to remember those who fought.

:00:50. > :00:51.In Guernsey the lights have been switched off

:00:52. > :00:56.In St Peter Port the church bell was rung throughout the day in honour

:00:57. > :01:00.The Town Church bell tolled 1,470 times today.

:01:01. > :01:02.Once for each of the Bailiwick men that lost

:01:03. > :01:07.It struck me that one could toll a bell 1,470 times and I played with

:01:08. > :01:12.the idea and worked out that if you did it every 20 seconds it would

:01:13. > :01:20.take all day, all the working day, and I thought that would be a chance

:01:21. > :01:27.for everybody to notice it. It is quite an appropriate way to just

:01:28. > :01:38.remind people and remember and commemorate what they did for us.

:01:39. > :01:41.And another chance to remember and reflect today.

:01:42. > :01:48.At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, we will remember them.

:01:49. > :01:53.I think it is good for us to remember the massive sacrifice that

:01:54. > :01:57.those families made and not only that, the fact that Guernsey itself

:01:58. > :02:01.lost nearly 1,500 young men and that made a significant

:02:02. > :02:08.I encourage you when you look on the war memorial

:02:09. > :02:14.like we will do in a moment, to focus on just one of those names.

:02:15. > :02:16.Then remind yourself that all of that life

:02:17. > :02:24.Henry Thomas de Jersey was my grandfather and he was 28 years

:02:25. > :02:31.old and he had five children and he left my grandmother widow.

:02:32. > :02:35.There were not many streets or parishes that were not affected

:02:36. > :02:38.by the bereavement of men lost and it was a big hole

:02:39. > :02:45.And today's a chance for us all to remember that.

:02:46. > :03:02.100 years on from when war was declared.

:03:03. > :03:05.Around 2,000 people have gathered in Jersey's Royal Square this

:03:06. > :03:07.evening for a ceremony and parade to remember the 100th anniversary

:03:08. > :03:18.have you ever seen the Royal Square looking like this? Months of

:03:19. > :03:23.preparation came together this evening to mark 100 years since the

:03:24. > :03:27.First World War was declared. The islanders will sit in these rows

:03:28. > :03:32.behind me including dignitaries like the bailiffs on the left turning

:03:33. > :03:39.governor and the UK minister who has responsibility for the Channel

:03:40. > :03:46.Islands and their relationship with the United Kingdom. What is

:03:47. > :03:49.happening tonight? This is a combination of ceremonial and

:03:50. > :03:53.creativity with a full production behind this event this evening and

:03:54. > :03:58.it will be a combination of music, lights, readings, speeches, the

:03:59. > :04:02.learning offerings and a service against `` service as well so there

:04:03. > :04:08.is a better for everybody. It will be very emotive and we were chosen

:04:09. > :04:13.pieces to link Guernsey and Jersey very closely with World I and there

:04:14. > :04:18.will be some images that put Jersey right at the heart of World War I in

:04:19. > :04:22.terms of the commitments it made and the servicemen who served and those

:04:23. > :04:26.who made the ultimate sacrifice. Thank you. A key part of this

:04:27. > :04:36.evening will be a lantern procession that will have dozens of islanders

:04:37. > :04:39.from each parish in Jersey. I am toward water noting the lantern

:04:40. > :04:46.procession. What will happen tonight? We have 12 people from each

:04:47. > :04:51.parish so that is 144 in total. Ten people will be carrying these

:04:52. > :04:54.lanterns which will be illuminated and Beowulf violin in a procession

:04:55. > :05:02.in the Royal Square at a given time and the constables will lay wreaths

:05:03. > :05:10.during the ceremony. `` and they will file in in a procession. There

:05:11. > :05:12.will be also a minute's silence to mark the exact moment that the First

:05:13. > :05:14.World War was declared. Jersey is giving ?120,000 to help

:05:15. > :05:17.those affected by the violence Hundreds have been killed

:05:18. > :05:19.and thousands injured in Israel and the Gaza strip

:05:20. > :05:23.since violence escalated in July. The Jersey Overseas Aid Commission

:05:24. > :05:24.has approved a ?30,000 grant to each of the four

:05:25. > :05:31.charities Christian Aid, the British Many athletes from Guernsey

:05:32. > :05:38.and Jersey have of made their way home today after the Commonwealth

:05:39. > :05:43.Games came to a close last night. Almost 80 athletes from the

:05:44. > :05:45.Channel Islands competed in the Glasgow Games, some for the first

:05:46. > :05:48.time and others for the last time. Sadly no medals are being brought

:05:49. > :05:51.home, but what do the Islands need to do to break the medal drought

:05:52. > :06:08.that's lasted for over 20 years? Spectators filled the streets of

:06:09. > :06:13.Glasgow for one of the last events of the Commonwealth Games, the

:06:14. > :06:19.men's Road race. Two cyclists from Jersey and six from Guernsey were

:06:20. > :06:22.competing among the 140 strong race. It was a technically difficult

:06:23. > :06:28.course for the riders but the heavy rain made it worse. Slippery

:06:29. > :06:34.conditions caused many cyclists to crash including James McLauchlan

:06:35. > :06:38.from Jersey. By the night flap Tobyn Horton was the only Channel Islander

:06:39. > :06:42.left and it made it harder to compete and heeded not finish the

:06:43. > :06:47.race. I was trying to position myself well but it is hard when you

:06:48. > :06:51.are a small ratio `` nation and you have the other countries riding well

:06:52. > :06:56.with teams and you end up getting pushed to the back. Being a single

:06:57. > :07:00.Guernsey person up there it is pretty tough trying to hold your

:07:01. > :07:05.own. There was also disappointment on the netball court. Serena Guthrie

:07:06. > :07:10.was playing 14 England. After losing by just one point in the last two

:07:11. > :07:13.seconds of their semifinal match against New Zealand they faced

:07:14. > :07:19.Jamaica in the bronze medal play`off. It was a close game but

:07:20. > :07:24.Jamaica won the match. Although disappointed not to win a medal,

:07:25. > :07:29.Serena Guthrie was pleased to be a part of team England. It is nice,

:07:30. > :07:33.every athlete in team England and every other team will be flying the

:07:34. > :07:37.flag for where they come from on where they have grown up so I am

:07:38. > :07:44.just pleased to do it for Jersey. There was more need to be done

:07:45. > :07:48.before the next Commonwealth Games? Every time we see the level of

:07:49. > :07:53.competition increase and improve. We look at that at each Games at the

:07:54. > :07:58.qualification standards that we set out we will review it for 2018 and

:07:59. > :08:04.we are aware that we will have two increase our standards again. As

:08:05. > :08:07.team jersey, if we can improve the preparation and the lifestyle of

:08:08. > :08:14.athletes and their whole attitude to sport then perhaps the athletes for

:08:15. > :08:19.us will be a bit stronger and better organised because a lot of those

:08:20. > :08:24.things can give us better results. As the Commonwealth Games close,

:08:25. > :08:30.preparations begin for the next one in 2018. We'll Jersey and Guernsey

:08:31. > :08:31.be able to bring a medal of any colour back from Australia's Gold

:08:32. > :08:35.Coast? Jersey's Under 19 cricket

:08:36. > :08:37.team have been promoted to The island side won all four of

:08:38. > :08:42.their matches against runners`up the Netherlands, Denmark, Guernsey and

:08:43. > :08:44.Italy in ICC Europe Division Two. As well as promotion to

:08:45. > :08:47.ICC Europe Division One, Jersey now also have the opportunity to qualify

:08:48. > :08:55.for the Under`19 Cricket World Cup. The team behind one of the

:08:56. > :08:57.Channel Islands longest running carnival week is looking for a new

:08:58. > :09:00.committee to organise the event. Alderney Week has been running

:09:01. > :09:04.since 1948, but those in charge want One

:09:05. > :09:08.of the group's newest recruits says organising the festival, which sees

:09:09. > :09:22.the islands population double to There is a lot to organise and I am

:09:23. > :09:26.learning that this year with the current Alderney week team who have

:09:27. > :09:30.done an amazing job for such a long time. I am just learning how to pull

:09:31. > :09:33.everything together and all the volunteers who have two thank and

:09:34. > :09:38.pulling so we have a lot of challenges but we will overcome them

:09:39. > :09:44.and be fine because they pull it off every year brilliantly. Will the

:09:45. > :09:48.weather last? Good evening. On this Day 100 years

:09:49. > :09:54.ago the start of the First World War, the weather had started to

:09:55. > :09:59.change as well. This was early morning on the 4th of August 1914

:10:00. > :10:02.when no pressure had taken over the United Kingdom. Quite a change in

:10:03. > :10:06.the weather because the summer previously had been pretty good.

:10:07. > :10:10.Showers continued into the following day. We have low pressure which will

:10:11. > :10:14.be a feature of the weather tomorrow and on Wednesday and low pressure

:10:15. > :10:17.will be the feature of the weather this week. By Wednesday we have a

:10:18. > :10:22.weather system sweeping through early in the day that will be

:10:23. > :10:27.replaced by fine conditions but the risk of showers. Showers are

:10:28. > :10:32.possible tomorrow. Some sunshine is likely and a similar temperature to

:10:33. > :10:37.what we have been used to. Overnight tonight there will be lengthy clear

:10:38. > :10:42.spells to start with but more clout developing towards dawn. That could

:10:43. > :10:45.bring us showers and a temperature of 14 degrees inland. Tomorrow

:10:46. > :10:51.expect the showers to be around in the morning. In the afternoon it is

:10:52. > :10:55.mainly dry with sunny spells and temperatures between 18 and 20. The

:10:56. > :10:58.risk of showers developing towards the end of the afternoon and the

:10:59. > :11:08.risk of persistent rain overnight and into Wednesday. On Wednesday

:11:09. > :11:13.itself it should be done so Wednesday is dry with sunny spells.

:11:14. > :11:17.Thursday is similar with a lot of clouds around and on Friday quite a

:11:18. > :11:21.big change. We have a new area of low pressure that could bring more

:11:22. > :11:25.persistent rain at the end of the week. It will turn a lot more windy

:11:26. > :11:30.in the forthcoming weekend with low`pressure dictating whether on

:11:31. > :11:36.Saturday and Sunday. Night`time temperatures should be no lower than

:11:37. > :11:40.13 or 14 and the daytime should be up to 21. I leave you with a summary

:11:41. > :11:47.for tomorrow. Thank you very much. That is it. I

:11:48. > :11:49.will be back tomorrow at 6:30am. From all of us, thank you for

:11:50. > :12:14.watching. Quite a fresh evening out there this

:12:15. > :12:20.evening. It's going to turn chilly in a few spots by the early hours of

:12:21. > :12:24.Tuesday. Underneath the clear, calm, tranquil conditions... Not

:12:25. > :12:28.completely clear because there are a few showers. You may have been

:12:29. > :12:32.caught out in some across the South today. After midnight, you can see

:12:33. > :12:39.the vast majority of the UK has dry weather, whereas Cornwall, Devon,

:12:40. > :12:41.just about nudging into Wales, possibly Northern Ireland and the

:12:42. > :12:46.south-west of Scotland, a few showers. But clear skies is the

:12:47. > :12:50.story tonight. Colder in rural spots. The Glens of Scotland, really

:12:51. > :12:52.nippy
