:00:14. > :00:16.A 79`year`old Jersey man has told how he was given electric shocks

:00:17. > :00:20.and had darts thrown at him when in a children's home in the 1940s.

:00:21. > :00:23.Gifford Aubin was giving evidence at the Jersey Care Inquiry today.

:00:24. > :00:27.He said the Jersey Home for Boys, which is now known as Haut de la

:00:28. > :00:35.Well, six years ago, when the scale of abuse in the care system first

:00:36. > :00:47.Christina Ghidoni takes up his story then and now.

:00:48. > :00:50.That's me there and this is my brother.

:00:51. > :00:54.2008, and as allegations of abuse at Haut de la Garenne hit the

:00:55. > :01:01.headlines, former resident Gifford Aubin told a BBC reporter about the

:01:02. > :01:04.abuse he had suffered there, usually at the hands of older boys.

:01:05. > :01:11.They did all sorts of things from putting wires on your legs, watching

:01:12. > :01:20.your legs, and they had a generator which they turned with a handle to

:01:21. > :01:22.pass electricity to you. And they threw darts at you. These were real

:01:23. > :01:26.darts. at the hands of older boys.

:01:27. > :01:29.Today Gifford took to the witness stand at the Jersey Care

:01:30. > :01:31.Inquiry and told his story again. Mr Aubin was giving evidence

:01:32. > :01:33.at the independent inquiry here at Seaton Place.

:01:34. > :01:38.He started by telling how he was taken away

:01:39. > :01:41.in a car when he was about six with his brother and sister and taken to

:01:42. > :01:45.the Jersey Home for Boys. He said he didn't know why he was

:01:46. > :01:49.being taken away from his family. He spent ten years at the children's

:01:50. > :01:52.home and described it like a prison. Mr Aubin told the inquiry today

:01:53. > :01:56.that he was caned by staff for escaping and going home for meals.

:01:57. > :02:03.He said there were about 150 boys at the home and only three staff

:02:04. > :02:05.members and life was hell there, but he couldn't complain through

:02:06. > :02:08.fear of being beaten. When asked what he wanted out

:02:09. > :02:10.of the Inquiry he said to make sure that nothing

:02:11. > :02:13.like that would happen again. Six years ago he told the BBC

:02:14. > :02:14.the same thing. This time he's hoping

:02:15. > :02:24.the authorities listen. It's something that should have

:02:25. > :02:30.never happened. Sometimes you feel, those who were responsible, probably

:02:31. > :02:33.you shouldn't feel that way but you feel that they should have been put

:02:34. > :02:37.inside to know what it was really like.

:02:38. > :02:39.Well, after Mr Aubin's evidence, a woman who spent time in the

:02:40. > :02:46.Jersey Home for Girls, also in the 1940s, told the panel her story.

:02:47. > :02:55.Christina joined me earlier to explain.

:02:56. > :03:00.78`year`old Violet Renouf spoke publicly for the first time. Today

:03:01. > :03:04.she told how at one stage she wet the bed and was made to parade

:03:05. > :03:09.around the dining room in front of the other girls with soiled linen on

:03:10. > :03:12.her head. She also told one point she was put into isolation for three

:03:13. > :03:15.weeks. She says times of the other girls with soiled linen on her head.

:03:16. > :03:21.She also told how at one point she was put into isolation for three

:03:22. > :03:22.weeks. She says times there were very hard and she still has

:03:23. > :03:25.nightmares. The inquiry will hear

:03:26. > :03:27.from more witnesses on Thursday. Guernsey Police has released

:03:28. > :03:30.an image of a man captured on CCTV in the High Street

:03:31. > :03:32.in the early hours of Monday. Martin Martin Jewellers

:03:33. > :03:35.was burgled at about 4:50am, and police are appealing for anyone

:03:36. > :03:38.who saw this man to come forward. A 22`year`old man

:03:39. > :03:40.from England has been arrested on suspicion of burglary and remains

:03:41. > :03:43.in police custody for questioning. The Chinese ambassador to the UK

:03:44. > :03:45.says there are lots of opportunities for Jersey to work

:03:46. > :03:48.more closely with his country. His Excellency Liu Xiaoming is in

:03:49. > :03:51.the island this week, and today he He's offering to host

:03:52. > :03:55.a round table discussion in London. A plaque put up to commemorate

:03:56. > :03:58.the 70th anniversary of the D`Day landings has been vandalised

:03:59. > :04:00.and ripped off a wall in Guernsey. Police are investigating after it

:04:01. > :04:04.was pulled from the wall and bent. Two months ago the island's

:04:05. > :04:07.Lieutenant Governor unveiled this plaque to honour a Canadian pilot

:04:08. > :04:23.who died whilst trying to knock It's a memorial to this guy who died

:04:24. > :04:27.doing good for the island and for Britain. And it's very sad, it makes

:04:28. > :04:32.me feel very sad and very angry that this has happened.

:04:33. > :04:35.A shortlist of companies who could run Guernsey's bus service

:04:36. > :04:38.More than ten operators expressed an interest.

:04:39. > :04:40.Now the Environment Department has to decide who gets the job.

:04:41. > :04:49.Getting you from A to B for decades. Over the years Guernsey's

:04:50. > :04:58.buses have changed a lot. And change is on the cards again.

:04:59. > :05:00.The current bus contract's expiring next April.

:05:01. > :05:04.We've known that for a while. But what we now know is that more

:05:05. > :05:08.than ten companies have expressed an interest in running it in future.

:05:09. > :05:11.And having looked at those initial bids, Environment's

:05:12. > :05:14.now decided which of those companies can officially tender.

:05:15. > :05:18.Where each will make a case for what they can offer,

:05:19. > :05:23.including looking at the size and type of buses they'd use in future,

:05:24. > :05:25.the timetables and routes.

:05:26. > :05:27.The States will decide who gets the job, but the local bus users

:05:28. > :05:35.group hopes it can be involved. The experience we had a previous

:05:36. > :05:41.consultations is that our advice was normally taken six months late. And

:05:42. > :05:44.I think that the new environment board is more consultative and more

:05:45. > :05:50.interested in getting it right first time, rather than having to patch

:05:51. > :05:53.rings up. So I would say very interested in being consulted and

:05:54. > :05:57.being listened to. `` patch things up.

:05:58. > :05:59.group hopes it can be involved. The earliest the new service

:06:00. > :06:03.will start is next April. And with the States still hoping to

:06:04. > :06:04.make the buses free, it really will signal another big change

:06:05. > :06:13.in the history of the Guernsey bus. David has the weather forecast for

:06:14. > :06:17.you now. I am back tomorrow at 630. Good night.

:06:18. > :06:23.Not much change in the weather, same wind and strength of wind and risk

:06:24. > :06:28.of showers, but more isolated showers tomorrow and a better chance

:06:29. > :06:32.of some sunshine. Still breezy and we will not see temperatures much

:06:33. > :06:36.more than 18 or 19 degrees. The culprit is the same area of low

:06:37. > :06:40.pressure, a long way away across the north of Scotland. One weather

:06:41. > :06:44.system will trickle across central France overnight and move away from

:06:45. > :06:47.us. We will see more showers coming in from the west, some lengthy clear

:06:48. > :06:53.spells in between those showers and we cannot rule out the possibility

:06:54. > :06:57.of one or two showers through the night. Overnight temperatures

:06:58. > :07:01.dipping as low as 14 or 15 degrees. Tomorrow the wind changes

:07:02. > :07:05.direction, gradually becoming more north`westerly. Showers fairly

:07:06. > :07:09.isolated into the afternoon, top temperature of 18 or 19 degrees. And

:07:10. > :07:13.with the breeze it will feel colder than that. The forecast for Thursday

:07:14. > :07:18.'s four showers to become more widespread and frequent and quite

:07:19. > :07:22.heavy. Then it becomes largely dry heading into Friday and the start of

:07:23. > :07:26.the weekend. Still quite grew at 18 or 19 degrees, the top temperature.

:07:27. > :07:29.In a second, the forecast for the UK, but in the meantime it is good

:07:30. > :07:32.night and I will leave you with the summary for tomorrow.

:07:33. > :07:38.of a messy couple of days with some heavy rain and showers but here'sing

:07:39. > :07:42.Matt with the national weather. Good evening. Given the recent

:07:43. > :07:46.change in weather conditions I am esure a few of you have mentioned

:07:47. > :07:50."autumn" who would blame new western Scotland today a mid-August day,

:07:51. > :07:54.driving wind, strong winds, temperatures at one po incompetent

:07:55. > :07:59.were just 13. A better day tomorrow, here, though. The cloud we have had

:08:00. > :08:01.today will work southwards. You will notice still unstable air across

:08:02. > :08:04.England and Wales. Lively thunderstorms through today. They

:08:05. > :08:09.are fading away by in large. One or two showers in the West but longer,

:08:10. > :08:12.clearer periods here. We still have that cloud, pushing through to the

:08:13. > :08:16.Scotland, Northern Ireland, north Wales and the north Midlands by the

:08:17. > :08:18.end of the night. But rather than persistent rain, away from the hills

:08:19. > :08:19.it'll
