:01:00. > :01:04.They say licences to fish in Guernsey waters have been

:01:05. > :01:06.revoked under obscure reasons and now they are afraid to work

:01:07. > :01:11.As the situation reaches a political stalemate, some say

:01:12. > :01:24.Almost too afraid to leave Jersey's waters for fear of being victimised.

:01:25. > :01:27.Historically, Jersey Fisherlen have worked around the Channel Islands,

:01:28. > :01:31.but last year a licensing sxstem was introduced to manage fish stocks

:01:32. > :01:38.Don has been in the trade for 3 years and says Jersey fishermen

:01:39. > :01:56.I had my rights removed simply because I wouldn't qualify hn a very

:01:57. > :02:03.short track record referencd period. Now we are seeing that things are

:02:04. > :02:07.getting much worse and fishdrmen are being harassed and

:02:08. > :02:13.licences taken away. The big concern is that

:02:14. > :02:15.of going back to their tradhtional grounds recalls they will bd

:02:16. > :02:19.persecuted by fisheries enforcement officers from Guernsey.

:02:20. > :02:26.escalated so that politicians are getting involved, but Jersex say it

:02:27. > :02:28.is Guernsey fisheries who won't move forward. There certainly sedms to be

:02:29. > :02:34.an element in the Guernsey fisheries department that seems to be running

:02:35. > :02:39.contrary to working to a good relationship with the Channdl

:02:40. > :02:44.Islands, with Jersey. They seem to be imposing fines and punishments on

:02:45. > :02:47.our fishermen that don't sedm to warrant whatever they are mdant to

:02:48. > :02:48.have done. In a statement, Guernsey's Commerce

:02:49. > :02:51.and Employment department, which is responsible for fisheries, confirms

:02:52. > :02:53.that "all licensing decisions are conducted and made in accordance

:02:54. > :02:56.with the relevant legislation." But it added that

:02:57. > :02:58.the licensing system "does hntroduce The licences were designed

:02:59. > :03:05.to protect fish stocks. Jersey fishermen are now pushing

:03:06. > :03:07.for a pan`Channel Islands agreement Condor Ferries is being takdn to

:03:08. > :03:19.an employment tribunal by two The company promised to start paying

:03:20. > :03:24.its French crew Social Security in But French union officials say

:03:25. > :03:29.those payments haven't been made. The hearings are due to start

:03:30. > :03:34.in October in St Malo. Condor Ferries says it's un`ble to

:03:35. > :03:37.comment on an ongoing legal process. Meanwhile, there could be ddlays to

:03:38. > :03:40.freight deliveries to the Channel Islands, as one of the vessdls

:03:41. > :03:43.brought in to replace the d`maged Local market property prices

:03:44. > :03:53.in Guernsey are on the up. The figures

:03:54. > :03:56.for the second quarter this year show the average local markdt house

:03:57. > :03:59.is worth just under ?470,000 ? % But the number of sales is down

:04:00. > :04:08.by almost 19%. The family

:04:09. > :04:11.of the man who died falling 30 feet from a wall in St Helier last week

:04:23. > :04:29.by the many people whose lives he It's over seven months

:04:30. > :04:38.since the Channel Islands wdre battered by strong winds and high

:04:39. > :04:40.tides during the winter storms. Today, more work was being

:04:41. > :04:43.carried out to repair the d`mage. But this morning it was one of

:04:44. > :04:46.Guernsey's quietest beaches that had The peace and serenity of

:04:47. > :04:55.Guernsey's Fermain Bay. But, coming into focus this morning

:04:56. > :04:58.was a very unusual visitor. A huge freight ship

:04:59. > :05:26.about to attempt an amphibious This is one of Guernsey's m`in

:05:27. > :05:33.been successful and the digger has just been unloaded.

:05:34. > :05:35.because this wall was severdly damaged in the winter storms.

:05:36. > :05:38.Due to its remoteness it?s not very easy to get a digger to the site.

:05:39. > :05:40.All around Guernsey, the co`stline was battered this winter

:05:41. > :05:43.and the Environment Departmdnt says they're going to need more loney to

:05:58. > :06:02.significant repairs has to come out of general reserve,

:06:03. > :06:08.not the funds to carry out these repairs.

:06:09. > :06:10.that of environment. This is about protection of the

:06:11. > :06:15.infrastructure, so it needs involvement from tea and out, and a

:06:16. > :06:21.great deal of money, and It's unclear just how long this will

:06:22. > :06:39.be a sight on the beach, Still ahead: The woman taking part

:06:40. > :06:43.in a record`breaking skydivd to raise money for dementia research.

:06:44. > :06:45.For the first time in 30 ye`rs, one of the big attractions at Gternsey's

:06:46. > :06:50.Organisers have decided not to have the Grand Pageant this year,

:06:51. > :06:53.where people dress up in traditional Guernsey dress.

:06:54. > :06:56.But there's still plenty to see and do, and thousands headed out

:06:57. > :07:09.west today to enjoy themselves and we were with them.

:07:10. > :07:25.Thank you! Look what I won! I won a fourth rosette in the show. Today

:07:26. > :07:33.it, we had to try and get otr boat to stand nicely. They need to follow

:07:34. > :07:42.instructions. I have been jtdging the children's cookery classes

:07:43. > :07:57.today, and we have had lots and lots of entries. One way or

:07:58. > :08:12.can't think of anything nicdr than the West

:08:13. > :08:15.like fire coming up. What dhd you get for that one? First prize.

:08:16. > :08:17.What is your favourite bit? Everything, really. Walking around,

:08:18. > :08:31.meeting people, enjoying here. The animals are my favourites,

:08:32. > :08:43.cute. I think they are very excited about the helter`skelter.

:08:44. > :08:54.make it the best, the peopld that come down. It

:08:55. > :09:03.what really makes it. West hs best! It looks fun.

:09:04. > :09:08.And, from the West Show to Battle of Flowers now, as tonight hundreds

:09:09. > :09:09.It's the 50th year the parish of Grouville has entered thd parade

:09:10. > :09:13.and, as Chris Harrison reports, it's become a family affair.

:09:14. > :09:24.To the parishioners of Grouville, it's five decades of memorids.

:09:25. > :09:33.A group of parishioners, including my mother and father, deciddd to

:09:34. > :09:39.make a float and they deciddd to go for it. Following year, thex put the

:09:40. > :09:47.I remember it, just about, `lthough I wasn't very old. I have bden

:09:48. > :09:51.involved ever since. The making of the float has been a

:09:52. > :09:55.families of the parish of every generation. 50 years ago, I was

:09:56. > :10:02.involved in the very beginnhng of the Battle of flowers. I did the

:10:03. > :10:07.ordering and so on for 18 ydars and my daughter is still involvdd. Now

:10:08. > :10:08.her daughter is Miss Battle of the flowers, so we have had a great deal

:10:09. > :10:09.of interest in From the older generation to

:10:10. > :10:10.the younger, My mum tells me when I was `bout one

:10:11. > :10:23.she used to put me in a crate, so I have been hit pretty

:10:24. > :10:25.much Katie?s dad Mark is

:10:26. > :10:35.the parish chairman, My father was the very first driver

:10:36. > :10:41.of the float. There were two drivers in those days, so he would have sat

:10:42. > :10:44.very much like I am today, hn the drivers seat at the back of the

:10:45. > :10:48.float. After my father, my tncle Walter took over. We have got along

:10:49. > :10:52.tradition of family, and I am proud to bd sat

:10:53. > :10:53.here. the 50th anniversary float hs sure

:10:54. > :11:15.to impress and inspire future They always say it never rahns on

:11:16. > :11:19.Battle Day, but it is not looking good for tomorrow, is it?

:11:20. > :11:23.We might be lucky, but therd is quite a high risk of seeing showers

:11:24. > :11:27.tomorrow. We got away with ht today, it is a shame because not h`ve had a

:11:28. > :11:31.battle of the flowers today it has been a fine day. Tomorrow

:11:32. > :11:37.there is a much higher seeing showers, and it is blustery

:11:38. > :11:42.to. A lair underneath for those dressing up might be needed.

:11:43. > :11:51.Scattered showers, 17 or 18 degrees the top ten wind. The reason for the

:11:52. > :11:54.change is a long way of at the moment. It is this lump of

:11:55. > :11:59.here that is approaching thd west coast of Ireland. It will travel

:12:00. > :12:03.down towards us overnight tonight. It is a line of showers, quhte a few

:12:04. > :12:07.of them tucked in with it. Ht moves through Ireland across the West of

:12:08. > :12:11.England, and arrives on our shores will be a feature into the

:12:12. > :12:18.afternoon. By Friday, high pressure is back, but for

:12:19. > :12:20.tomorrow, the showers are lhkely to be quite frequent. Overnight

:12:21. > :12:23.tonight, there will be weather around initially, then

:12:24. > :12:31.showers small powers of the morning. They

:12:32. > :12:35.fade away for a time, but they will be back swiftly tomorrow morning,

:12:36. > :12:38.overnight temperatures down to 4 degrees. Briefly some morning

:12:39. > :12:42.sunshine tomorrow, but quickly the showers show up.

:12:43. > :12:47.the morning onwards, those showers will

:12:48. > :12:52.might get some sunshine in between the showers, but

:12:53. > :13:15.frequent, tending to fade away towards the end of the afternoon.

:13:16. > :13:24.Friday will be a nice day whth some sunshine, and a little bit warmer.

:13:25. > :13:27.Lighter winds but still frol the north`west. The start of thd weekend

:13:28. > :13:33.does not look too bad, increasingly cloudy through

:13:34. > :13:39.Saturday. By the time we get to Sunday, a bit of a change. @ lot of

:13:40. > :13:43.cloud and rain possible on Sunday. Those winds pick up again, becoming

:13:44. > :13:46.mostly westerly to the course of the day. So tomorrow, quite a hhgh risk

:13:47. > :13:54.of showers. Oh dear. David, thank you. We will

:13:55. > :14:00.have all the highlights frol the Battle of the flowers tomorrow night

:14:01. > :14:03.at 6:30pm. And live coveragd of the parade on BBC radio Jersey. Tune in

:14:04. > :14:14.from 2pm. That's it for now. not to swim. They say a high tide is

:14:15. > :14:24.expected tonight and they anticipate more problems.

:14:25. > :14:27.A sex`offender from Somerset, who enticed girls as young as nhne with

:14:28. > :14:29.the offer of singing lessons, has been jailed for four years.

:14:30. > :14:32.Sixty`two`year`old Paul Francis from Yeovil was sentenced at Taunton

:14:33. > :14:35.Crown Court after pleading guilty to child sex offences. He handdd out

:14:36. > :14:37.hand`written invitations to girls on their way to school. The cotrt heard

:14:38. > :14:41.he had previous child abuse convictions, but at the timd of his

:14:42. > :14:43.latest crimes, he was not on the Sex Offenders Register and was not being

:14:44. > :14:51.250 new jobs are to be created with the expansion of two meat f`ctories

:14:56. > :15:00.Bugle and Redruth into the largest de`boning facilities in the UK.

:15:01. > :15:04.The continuing closure of Longreach House in Redruth for repairs means

:15:05. > :15:08.44 people with mental health issues are now having to be treated outside

:15:09. > :15:15.Cornwall. Families say the shortage of beds is unacceptable.

:15:16. > :15:19.The war hero, Edmund 'Tommy' Purser from Exeter, who took the ldad

:15:20. > :15:24.landing craft ashore at Sword beach on D Day, has died aged 95. Some of

:15:25. > :15:27.his crew were killed when they suffered a direct hit. He'd been

:15:28. > :15:33.married to Pam who was a wrdn, for 69 years.

:15:34. > :15:37.Onto some sports news, and the South West's three Football Leagud clubs

:15:38. > :15:41.were all knocked out of the League Cup last night ` in the first round!

:15:42. > :15:43.The drama included a penaltx shoot`out at Home Park, as

:15:44. > :15:58.Plymouth argyle were head for the exit in the first half against

:15:59. > :16:05.Leyton Orient, one division higher than their hosts. They deserved a

:16:06. > :16:10.2`0 lead until Rubin Reid scored the first of his two goals. Reid, who

:16:11. > :16:15.looks lean andage Lyle, aftdr noticeably losing weight, shrugged

:16:16. > :16:22.off his marker to equalise `nd send the tie into extra time. Orhent

:16:23. > :16:32.restored their lead only for McHugh to send it into the net for 3`3

:16:33. > :16:38.Penalties decided the winners. Argyle had the chance to go through.

:16:39. > :16:52.But top`class goal keeping forced a sudden`death scenario.

:16:53. > :16:57.Exeter City gave a good account of themselves against Bournemotth. They

:16:58. > :17:09.couldn't prevent the Cherrids from setting up a 2`0 win.

:17:10. > :17:12.Yeovil town have lost their first two games of the new season, both at

:17:13. > :17:20.home. This time it was a 2`0 reverse to Gill ham, which sent thel packing

:17:21. > :17:24.from the League Cup at the first attempt. This despite the fhrst

:17:25. > :17:29.for the Glovers since joining from Nottingham Forest.

:17:30. > :17:32.Devon's Olympic event rider Mary King has had a successful rdturn to

:17:33. > :17:34.competition following her two`month ban for dangerous riding. M`ry,

:17:35. > :17:37.who's 53 and from Salcombe Regis, near Sidmouth, finished both first

:17:38. > :17:40.and second at the West Wiltshire Horse Trials yesterday.

:17:41. > :17:43.A skydiver from Devon is prdparing for a world record`breaking event in

:17:44. > :17:47.America. Maddy Heath`Kelly hs one of a handful of people from thd UK

:17:48. > :17:50.selected to make the all`wolen jump in California. She's doing ht to

:17:51. > :17:53.raise money for research into dementia, following her Mum's

:17:54. > :17:55.diagnosis with the condition. Spotlight's John Danks has the

:17:56. > :18:08.Jumping out of a plane at 12,00 feet, these images captured on the

:18:09. > :18:14.helmet camera of Maddy Heath`Kelly. This is something the 26`ye`r`old

:18:15. > :18:21.from Exeter has done almost 600 times. Her next challenge ` to break

:18:22. > :18:28.a world record. The record hs formation skydive with betwden 20

:18:29. > :18:32.to 130 female sky divers from all over the world. It will be the

:18:33. > :18:35.largest formation with multhple shapes, so we jump out and build one

:18:36. > :18:40.shape, all let go and then another shape. It has to be at least

:18:41. > :18:47.two shapes to be the new this jump. When I got offerdd a

:18:48. > :18:52.place with when my mum became unwdll and

:18:53. > :19:01.was diagnosed with fund`raising opportunity and raise

:19:02. > :19:05.money for Alzheimer's Society at the same time. Her mum was diagnosed

:19:06. > :19:11.She's been moved by Maddy's gesture. I'm

:19:12. > :19:15.that anybody would think to put the two together like that and say,

:19:16. > :19:22.right, I'm going to California and I'm fundraising at the same time. I

:19:23. > :19:24.think good for her, you know, she's really doing well.

:19:25. > :19:28.Now, how handy are you with a hammer? Probably not as good as a

:19:29. > :19:32.group of men who descended on Devon today from all over the world. They

:19:33. > :19:34.were here for the first day of an international Blacksmiths Fdstival.

:19:35. > :19:37.We sent our reporter Heidi Davey along to Westpoint to have ` go

:19:38. > :19:47.When I came into work today, this wasn't one of the jobs I thought I'd

:19:48. > :19:54.end up doing. I have my gloves on, my safety glasses and my apron and

:19:55. > :19:58.Don is here to teach me all I need to know. What's the plan?

:19:59. > :20:04.what we're going to do, I'vd heard you need

:20:05. > :20:08.coat at home, so the mission is we convert

:20:09. > :20:15.finished item there. We havd to make that into a square? Square. That

:20:16. > :20:19.sounds simple enough, but I'm not sure it is. Straight up and down

:20:20. > :20:24.motion. That's it. All the way to the end.

:20:25. > :20:30.flat bit. Flatten it up. Thdre's your one you prepared earlidr. We

:20:31. > :20:33.need to turn it over there. Just over the end. Hit it. I took a

:20:34. > :20:42.sneaky break from with Don to see what else w`s

:20:43. > :20:45.happening around the show. Ht wasn't long before we came across the Welsh

:20:46. > :20:47.contingent. There's not manx big festivals like this. So, for

:20:48. > :20:52.blacksmiths like myself, I'l currently studying, but it's a

:20:53. > :20:55.really important launch pad. It might be a profession you think

:20:56. > :21:02.associate with being partictlarly male. But at the festival there are

:21:03. > :21:07.several ladies showing the len how it's done. Wendy is one of them

:21:08. > :21:12.You've been a blacksmith for how long? Longer than I'd dare to

:21:13. > :21:17.30 How due years. First get into it? A pure accident.

:21:18. > :21:21.environmental biology. I cotldn t find a job. Six months later I

:21:22. > :21:28.so bored, I went for any job. I loved

:21:29. > :21:34.it. Time to see how the trahnee and her hook

:21:35. > :21:42.What, down? Yeah, go on. Have a look. How many

:21:43. > :21:51.Oh, I'd give you an eight. That s not bad for a first

:21:52. > :21:55.After all that hard work, I think I've earned a well deserved massage.

:21:56. > :21:58.Thousands of people are getting ready for round two of a pyrotechnic

:21:59. > :22:01.battle in the skies off Plylouth's waterfront tonight. Blitz Fhreworks

:22:19. > :22:23.no Bonfire Night party, thotgh. This is serious competition. Hundred s of

:22:24. > :22:32.kilograms of explosives battling it out to find a winner. Some of these

:22:33. > :22:35.fireworks are home grown. Not that you'd want to attempt this

:22:36. > :22:40.back garden. The crowds havd gathered in their thousands. Up

:22:41. > :22:46.until now they've been eating and drinking. We've heard them laughing

:22:47. > :22:53.and joking. Now the only two sounds emerging are oohhh and aahhh. If you

:22:54. > :23:01.look in the air you can see why A different view, from the he`dland

:23:07. > :23:13.It's been amazing. They've got better and better. They havd. This

:23:14. > :23:17.is the best so far. The best thing for me it's free and it's jtst

:23:18. > :23:21.great thing. Every year, we all come down and just enjoy the firdworks.

:23:22. > :23:35.What is there not to again. Showering gold on thhs city,

:23:36. > :23:43.for a second night. Extraordinary. Every year you think

:23:44. > :23:46.they can't get better, but they do. Beautiful clear skies which help.

:23:47. > :24:11.How is it looking for tonight? frequent showers and the ring of

:24:12. > :24:18.thunder. What's happening is just to the south, there's a lump of cloud.

:24:19. > :24:21.That's heading towards us. Ht's bringing slightly colder air. It

:24:22. > :24:26.moves through Ireland overnhght But it gets to us by the middle of the

:24:27. > :24:30.day. By this evening, lunch time tomorrow, it's

:24:31. > :24:35.south`west of England. The focus of a lot

:24:36. > :24:42.and feeling cooler too. A change tomorrow.

:24:43. > :24:52.Friday, that will have gone. Friday is a largely dry day

:24:53. > :25:02.today. There have been showdrs dotted around.

:25:03. > :25:11.Moor. Our cameraman catching a good view of a

:25:12. > :25:24.couple on holiday. You can see that the clouds haven't been tall enough
