:00:00. > :00:00.over on BBC Two in a moment. Now, on BBC One, it's time

:00:00. > :00:13.Good evening. for the news where

:00:14. > :00:16.Condor Ferries has bought a new ?50 million,

:00:17. > :00:22.high`speed ferry to sail between the Channel Islands and the UK.

:00:23. > :00:24.The Austal 102 will only sail to Poole,

:00:25. > :00:27.after Weymouth was deemed unsuitable.

:00:28. > :00:29.But what impact will that have on fares?

:00:30. > :00:37.That's how Condor's describing its new ferry.

:00:38. > :00:42.It'll sail in poorer weather and we are told will offer a smoother ride.

:00:43. > :00:47.A real wow factor for the island, great news for inbound tourists and

:00:48. > :00:54.It will be a new state`of`the`art ferry and an

:00:55. > :01:01.important time for us and the future of ferry travel for the islands.

:01:02. > :01:04.That's a big investment, and it only went ahead

:01:05. > :01:06.after both Jersey and Guernsey's governments agreed to give

:01:07. > :01:11.But are passengers happy with the arrangement?

:01:12. > :01:26.Fair play to them investing with new modern technology.

:01:27. > :01:40.We spend ?1 million marketing in the UK to get people to come to

:01:41. > :01:43.the islands, and we want more people to come and islanders travelling to

:01:44. > :01:48.That is where we are going to recoup the investment.

:01:49. > :01:52.Prices are closely monitored by the States,

:01:53. > :01:59.So fares will be monitored, but Condor isn't ruling out a rise.

:02:00. > :02:02.The only thing that's certain is that the boat arriving here

:02:03. > :02:11.from the UK will look very different next year.

:02:12. > :02:13.Well, businesses in Weymouth have been counting the cost of losing

:02:14. > :02:19.It generates millions of pounds for the local economy, supports hundreds

:02:20. > :02:22.of jobs and for centuries has been the gateway to the Channel Islands.

:02:23. > :02:30.Chris Harrison looks at the history of the sea link.

:02:31. > :02:32.This was Weymouth harbour 80 years ago.

:02:33. > :02:39.It's long been the port linking the Channel Islands and the UK.

:02:40. > :02:42.In the mid`19th century a railway was laid to connect the train to

:02:43. > :02:45.the ferries, allowing Jersey Royal potatoes and tomatoes to be exported

:02:46. > :02:50.to the UK and tourists to visit the Channel Islands with ease.

:02:51. > :02:59.It's seen plenty of new ferries, too, but it won't be welcoming

:03:00. > :03:25.It plays an important role in our local economy, but equally,

:03:26. > :03:27.we have is a council been mindful of seeing these things within

:03:28. > :03:31.And tourism bosses in the islands are worried that the change

:03:32. > :03:41.Weymouth has been a main point of departure for Jersey for many years,

:03:42. > :03:44.and when we didn't have a Weymouth service due to the problems of last

:03:45. > :03:48.year, we did lose some business as a result, so we will have to work hard

:03:49. > :03:56.to make sure that everybody comes via Poole.

:03:57. > :03:58.So despite Weymouth spending millions repairing its harbour

:03:59. > :04:00.in the past few years, its days as a gateway

:04:01. > :04:09.between our isles and the mainland will end in spring next year.

:04:10. > :04:12.Guernsey swimmer Miles Munro has told the BBC he's thrilled

:04:13. > :04:15.to have won a gold medal at the Youth Olympics in China.

:04:16. > :04:21.The 18`year`old was part of team GB's 4x100 metres relay team

:04:22. > :04:23.and he was back in action at today,

:04:24. > :04:25.for the final of the 50 metres freestyle.

:04:26. > :04:32.The young Guernseyman Miles Munro about to compete

:04:33. > :04:41.in the 50 metres freestyle final at the Youth Olympics in Nanjing.

:04:42. > :04:47.but not quite enough for a medal this afternoon.

:04:48. > :04:50.But yesterday he, along with his Team GB teammates,

:04:51. > :04:57.stunned the swimming world when they won gold in the 4x100m relay.

:04:58. > :05:02.Winning gold was a really good end to the season.

:05:03. > :05:10.Every champion has to start somewhere, and for Miles,

:05:11. > :05:26.it was here in the small pool, where he won his first medal.

:05:27. > :05:28.He got his Duckling badge and his Puffin badges.

:05:29. > :05:30.His first medal was when he was five years old.

:05:31. > :05:33.He came second swimming ten metres with a float.

:05:34. > :05:35.He had a good kick, so that proved that point,

:05:36. > :05:41.Well, Miles has obviously come a very long way since then,

:05:42. > :05:45.He reached the semifinals in two events

:05:46. > :05:50.and now can add a Youth Olympic gold to his collection.

:05:51. > :05:55.European Juniors before them as well.

:05:56. > :06:01.So I am starting to get a bit tired now.

:06:02. > :06:04.So, while Miles enjoys a well deserved rest, many in the

:06:05. > :06:06.swimming world are now wondering how far he can go,

:06:07. > :06:16.especially with the Rio Olympics just two years away.

:06:17. > :06:30.Good evening. We saw some pretty bright conditions today and we have

:06:31. > :06:39.more of the same tomorrow. Just a few isolated showers and a cool

:06:40. > :06:43.breeze. At the moment it is a story. Lengthy clear spells. We could see a

:06:44. > :06:48.shower popping up here and there, but largely drive. Cooler in that

:06:49. > :06:51.west of the wind and it will be a chilly start to tomorrow morning.

:06:52. > :06:56.Quite a bright start as well. We may have some show was popping up here

:06:57. > :07:05.and there, but mostly dry story. And staying dry for the North show and

:07:06. > :07:08.go see. Temperatures reaching potentially 18 Celsius in the top

:07:09. > :07:14.spots. For the next few days, Friday brings more in the way of showers. A

:07:15. > :07:19.few showers for Saturday but mostly dry and bright with sunny spells.

:07:20. > :07:24.Sunday, starting bright but clouds through the day with rain arriving

:07:25. > :07:27.overnight. That leads to a hostelry, wet bank holiday Monday. I will

:07:28. > :07:40.leave you with the summary for tomorrow. Good night.

:07:41. > :07:48.Good evening. For many of us a bank holiday looms large and so does a

:07:49. > :07:53.change in the weather patterns. Is the that good or bad news? Only you

:07:54. > :07:57.can decide that. For the time being we've got similar weather patterns.

:07:58. > :08:00.Another chilly day tomorrow, with some sunshine but probably more

:08:01. > :08:04.showers. Today's showers are fading from the east but we are seeing

:08:05. > :08:08.outbreaks of rain in parts of Scotland, parts of Northern Ireland

:08:09. > :08:10.and later in the night northern England. You won't be as cold here
