:00:13. > :00:14.Good evening and welcome to BBC Channel Islands. Coming up:

:00:15. > :00:18.Condor takes its new boat to Poole, ending 80 years of Channel Hslands

:00:19. > :00:29.We all hope to bring more pdople to the island, trying to get pdople to

:00:30. > :00:32.come over through marketing. Plus we speak to

:00:33. > :00:46.a Guernsey teenager who won gold enjoying it.

:00:47. > :00:49.And another bright day on the way tomorrow. Just a couple of

:00:50. > :00:59.showers, but a good chance of staying dry.

:01:00. > :01:02.Condor Ferries has bought a new ?50 million,

:01:03. > :01:04.high`speed ferry to sail between the Channel Islands and the UK.

:01:05. > :01:07.The new vessel will replace two boats currently serving the routes.

:01:08. > :01:09.But the Austal 102 will onlx sail to Poole after Weymouth

:01:10. > :01:14.Condor says the new boat will be bigger, more reliable and whll be

:01:15. > :01:29.That's how Condor's describhng its new ferry.

:01:30. > :01:36.It'll sail in poorer weather and we are told will offer a smoother ride.

:01:37. > :01:47.A real wow factor for the island, great news for inbound tourhsts and

:01:48. > :01:55.islanders getting off the islands. It will be a new state`of`the`art

:01:56. > :01:57.ferry and an important time for us and the future of ferry travel for

:01:58. > :01:58.the islands. That's a big investment,

:01:59. > :02:00.and only went ahead after both Jersey and Guernsey's

:02:01. > :02:02.governments agreed to give But are passengers happy with

:02:03. > :02:21.the arrangement? Beatle fair play to them investing

:02:22. > :02:23.with new modern technology. We need some more competition.

:02:24. > :02:34.We spend ?1 million EA in the UK to get

:02:35. > :02:43.and we want more people to come and islanders travelling to use the

:02:44. > :02:48.ferry. That is where we are going to regroup the investment. So

:02:49. > :02:52.rule out a price change? Prhces are closely monitored by the St`tes and

:02:53. > :02:53.they will continue to be so. So fares will be monitored,

:02:54. > :02:54.but Condor isn't ruling out a rise. The only thing that's certahn is

:02:55. > :02:55.that the boat arriving here from the UK will look very different

:02:56. > :03:02.next year. Well, businesses in Weymouth have

:03:03. > :03:04.been counting the cost of losing It generates millions of potnds for

:03:05. > :03:08.the local economy, supports hundreds of jobs and for centuries h`s been

:03:09. > :03:11.the gateway to the Channel Hslands. Chris Harrison looks

:03:12. > :03:19.at the history of the sea lhnk. This was Weymouth

:03:20. > :03:23.harbour 80 years ago. It's long been the port linking

:03:24. > :03:26.the Channel Islands and the UK. In the mid 19th century a r`ilway

:03:27. > :03:30.was laid to connect the trahn to the ferries, allowing Jersex Royal

:03:31. > :03:34.potatoes and tomatoes to be exported to the UK and tourists to vhsit

:03:35. > :03:39.the Channel Islands with ease. It's seen plenty of new ferries

:03:40. > :04:16.too, but it won't be welcomhng Big it plays an important role in

:04:17. > :04:21.our local economy, but equally, we have is a council bin mindftl of

:04:22. > :04:22.seeing these things within our strategic agenda going forw`rd.

:04:23. > :04:23.And tourism bosses in the islands are worried that the change

:04:24. > :04:38.Weymouth has been a main pohnt of departure for Jersey for many years,

:04:39. > :04:42.and when we didn't have a Wdymouth service due to the problems of last

:04:43. > :04:47.year, we did lose some result, so we will have to work hard

:04:48. > :04:50.to make sure repairing its harbour in thd past

:04:51. > :04:52.few years, its days as a gateway between our isles and the m`inland

:04:53. > :04:59.will end in spring next year. Wages increased more quicklx than

:05:00. > :05:01.inflation in Jersey last ye`r. Figures from the States show

:05:02. > :05:03.salaries increased by 2.6%, with Prices are rising more slowly,

:05:04. > :05:16.with inflation currently at 1.6 . The van driver being questioned

:05:17. > :05:18.in relation to a fatal collhsion in Jersey has been released while

:05:19. > :05:21.police continue their investigation. 25`year`old motorcyclist Sal Slater

:05:22. > :05:23.died on Monday evening after The owner of a lorry involvdd

:05:24. > :05:34.in a fatal crash in Guernsex last year today pleaded not guilty to

:05:35. > :05:35.charges relating to the dangerous Timothy Le Cheminant appeardd in

:05:36. > :05:40.the Magistrates court this lorning. It was emphasised the condition

:05:41. > :05:43.of the lorry was not responsible for, or linked to, the collhsion

:05:44. > :05:46.at Salarie Corner in April 2013 The case was adjourned,

:05:47. > :05:49.and a trial date wasn't set. You're watching the BBC

:05:50. > :05:56.in the Channel Islands. Still ahead, Holly will havd the

:05:57. > :06:00.weather. Later in Spotlight with Justin

:06:01. > :06:01.and Rebecca: An historic cattle market holds

:06:02. > :06:06.its final auction. A Guernsey teenager is

:06:07. > :06:11.the first Channel Islander dver to 18`year`old swimmer Miles Mtnro was

:06:12. > :06:16.part of the team that took gold But there was no time to bask in his

:06:17. > :06:21.glory, as Miles was also in action The young Guernseyman Miles Munro

:06:22. > :06:32.about to compete in the 50m freestyle final

:06:33. > :06:42.at the Youth Olympics in Nanjing. He wasn't far off the pace,

:06:43. > :06:44.but not quite enough But yesterday he,

:06:45. > :06:51.along with his Team GB teamlates, stunned the swimming world when

:06:52. > :07:09.they won gold in the 4x100m relay. That was amazing. Winning gold was a

:07:10. > :07:12.really good end to the season. I'm really enjoying it.

:07:13. > :07:22.Every champion has to start somewhere, and for miles, it was

:07:23. > :07:28.here in the small pool, where he won his first medal. He got his duckling

:07:29. > :07:37.badge and his puffin badges. first medal was when he was five

:07:38. > :07:43.years old, he came second swimming ten metres with a float. He had

:07:44. > :07:45.good kick, so that proved that point, and the next year he won

:07:46. > :07:46.Well, Miles has obviously come a very long way since then,

:07:47. > :07:49.He reached the semifinals in two events at last month's Commonwealth

:07:50. > :07:54.Games and now can add a Youth Olympic gold to his collecthon.

:07:55. > :08:02.It has been a very long season. European Juniors before thel as

:08:03. > :08:04.well. So I am starting to gdt a bit tired now.

:08:05. > :08:06.So, while Miles enjoys a well deserved rest, many hn the

:08:07. > :08:09.swimming world are now wonddring how far he can go, especially whth the

:08:10. > :08:16.Mike Wilkins, BBC Channel Islands News, Gternsey.

:08:17. > :08:22.A 70`year`old Australian man has beaten Guernsey man Roger Allsop's

:08:23. > :08:25.record to become the oldest man to swim the English Channel.

:08:26. > :08:27.Cyril Baldock from Bondi Be`ch in Sydney completed

:08:28. > :08:30.He's three months older than Roger was when he completed the swim

:08:31. > :08:47.Still an impressive feat at any age and any time of year, but the sea is

:08:48. > :08:51.fairly warm at the moment. What is the weather looking like?

:08:52. > :08:55.It might be warm in the sea, but I don't think

:08:56. > :10:35.For our surfers, the waves `re a little disappointing. Perhaps one or

:10:36. > :10:40.two showers on Saturday, and then Sunday starts drive the trahn moves

:10:41. > :10:49.in overnight leading to a Come rain or shine, we will have

:10:50. > :10:56.highlights of the Battle of the flowers at the North Show tomorrow

:10:57. > :11:02.evening. Stay with the BBC now for the rest of spotlight.

:11:03. > :11:05.after a steel structure collapsed at Falmouth Docks in Cornwall.

:11:06. > :11:07.Emergency services were called to the scene just

:11:08. > :11:13.A Falmouth said the men suffered "serious injuries"

:11:14. > :11:16.and the thoughts of everyond at the company were with thdm.

:11:17. > :11:25.The Health and Safety Executive has been informed.

:11:26. > :11:28.An review into mental health services for young people in England

:11:29. > :11:30.has been welcomed by a family from Cornwall whose son died

:11:31. > :11:33.The Health mMinister Norman Lamb has described services as

:11:34. > :11:39.He's set up a "task force" to find out how they can be improved.

:11:40. > :11:42.In a moment, we'll be hearing from a member of that task force, but first

:11:43. > :11:46.18`year`old Ben Cowburn frol Truro took his own life at the

:11:47. > :11:51.Longreach House Adult Mental Health Unit in Cornwall in 2010.

:11:52. > :11:55.His parents set up the Invictus Trust to campaign for

:11:56. > :12:01.a specialist unit for young people with acute mental health issues

:12:02. > :12:05.Plans for the unit are advanced but are waiting on NHS fundhng

:12:06. > :12:10.The family welcome the ministerial interest.

:12:11. > :12:13.Norman Lamb outlines a numbdr of points that we have discovered

:12:14. > :12:17.through talking to young people and their families.

:12:18. > :12:20.Priorities that we see as rdally, really important,

:12:21. > :12:24.so it is completely in line with the Invictus C`mpaign.

:12:25. > :12:27.I am slightly concerned that a task force means a strategy, Is

:12:28. > :12:28.this is aims, objective, etc, so th`t all

:12:29. > :12:33.adds delay to a process and I am concerned that there may be some

:12:34. > :12:37.delays in things happening, but we are very pleased that mental health

:12:38. > :12:39.is being raised up to a more appropriate level

:12:40. > :12:43.of consciousness, really. The Health Minister says thd

:12:44. > :12:47.initiative has been influenced by meeting the families of young people

:12:48. > :12:51.including Steve and Sharon Cowburn. Here he's visiting a young persons

:12:52. > :12:55.mental health unit in Essex. I want to crucially involve young

:12:56. > :13:00.people in this whole process to look at how we can modernise children's

:13:01. > :13:04.mental health services, makd the best use of the resources available,

:13:05. > :13:09.pooling all of the resources. It's a commission organised

:13:10. > :13:12.by four different organisathons We need to make that

:13:13. > :13:17.much more rational. Two of the patients at the

:13:18. > :13:21.Colchester unit are from Cornwall. Because there are between tdn

:13:22. > :13:24.and 15 young people being c`red for outside of Cornwall at `ny one

:13:25. > :13:32.time, Cornwall has to pay for that. The Cowburns say that

:13:33. > :13:35.costs ?2 million a year. The new unit would cost no lore

:13:36. > :13:37.and young people would be treated The Cornwall Partnership NHS

:13:38. > :13:42.Foundation Trust which runs mental health services in

:13:43. > :13:44.Cornwall says it welcomes the task force and that its clinical director

:13:45. > :13:47.will be providing some input. Meanwhile, it says

:13:48. > :13:50.the 30 beds here at Longreach House should reopen after building work

:13:51. > :13:58.by the end of the year. Well one member

:13:59. > :14:01.of the task force is Johnny Benjamin, he says he receivdd poor

:14:02. > :14:04.mental health care as a teenager I asked him

:14:05. > :14:08.what one thing needs changing to I mean, we know, in some ardas,

:14:09. > :14:19.funding has been cut by 94% There is no parity of esteel

:14:20. > :14:23.between physical health tre`tment Cuts keep coming to

:14:24. > :14:28.the mental health system and much Money is one thing, but it `lso

:14:29. > :14:37.depends on how that money is spent. What kinds of services

:14:38. > :14:40.on the ground are needed so that young people in particular

:14:41. > :14:44.get the help and support thdy need? We need to look at services

:14:45. > :14:47.on the ground and things like more beds and stopping young

:14:48. > :14:51.people being placed in adult wards. Also, stopping young people having

:14:52. > :14:55.to travel miles for treatment. Sometimes they have to travdl right

:14:56. > :14:57.across the country, which is really They need to be

:14:58. > :15:02.around their family and fridnds There is also

:15:03. > :15:04.a problem with waiting times. People are waiting for years

:15:05. > :15:24.for access to therapy The Minister says that the system

:15:25. > :15:27.isn't currently fit for purpose do you detect that something could come

:15:28. > :15:31.out of this task force? I do that something comes from this task

:15:32. > :15:35.force needs to change. I just hear stories

:15:36. > :15:40.of young people service. It is very rare to hear a

:15:41. > :15:47.good example of for young people, and the wrist the

:15:48. > :15:53.problem of when people turn 18, service, and so many people fall

:15:54. > :15:59.through the gap in many people are failed by the

:16:00. > :16:00.system. Thank you. The end of an era

:16:01. > :16:01.for a famous livestock markdt. It's carnival time in Weymotth,

:16:02. > :16:03.thousands are there, includhng Join us for the legendary c`rnival

:16:04. > :16:21.here in Weymouth, we are here with hundreds of thousands of other

:16:22. > :16:24.people and the world`famous red arrows.

:16:25. > :16:26.The North Devon town of Holsworthy is famous for its cattle market

:16:27. > :16:30.but today the hammer went down on the final sale in the site's

:16:31. > :16:32.last ever auction, ending a hundred years of bidding and bargaining

:16:33. > :16:35.A brand new market will soon open just outside the town,

:16:36. > :16:37.but it's still been a poign`nt day for farmers who?ve been selling

:16:38. > :16:44.Kirk England has been to medt those seeing the end of an dra.

:16:45. > :16:55.Very sad, really, because after about 107 years, it's going.

:16:56. > :16:59.This is the last time we are coming to this market.

:17:00. > :17:01.People came from far and wide for the last ever auction

:17:02. > :17:07.Surreal, I think, that is how it feels.

:17:08. > :17:10.You're standing back and looking at what is going on.

:17:11. > :17:13.There are a lot of people hdre, farmers coming in with stock,

:17:14. > :17:17.they want to be part of history and have animals here at thd last

:17:18. > :17:23.Livestock was eventually sold on the town square, before being moved to

:17:24. > :17:29.It has been sold now to pay for this, a ?6 million markdt

:17:30. > :17:38.An investment that many argte was vital for the local economy

:17:39. > :17:41.There was probably one third of all people involved in some shape

:17:42. > :17:46.If we took that out of the dquation, that would be an enormous g`p

:17:47. > :17:49.in what is happening in terls of productivity in the area

:17:50. > :17:55.in what is happening socially in the area as well as economically.

:17:56. > :17:58.The old market site has been bought by a housing developer and Tesco

:17:59. > :18:07.We have to compete against a supermarket.

:18:08. > :18:13.We are individual traders whth their individual niche at what we

:18:14. > :18:21.No`one from Tesco was avail`ble for comment, but the local business

:18:22. > :18:27.groups say that the planned store could attract more people into town.

:18:28. > :18:30.This is the last piece to be sold through

:18:31. > :18:36.Back at the market, the last hammer falls, and people

:18:37. > :18:49.are hoping the next 100 years will be as good as the last 100.

:18:50. > :18:52.It's been the end of an era too for the Royal Navy frigate HMS Plymouth.

:18:53. > :18:55.She's set sail to be scrappdd in a foreign port.

:18:56. > :18:57.She was one of the last surviving warships from the Falklands War

:18:58. > :19:09.It's believed she's heading for a port in Turkey.

:19:10. > :19:21.One of the main thing is th`t she is the surrender of South Georgia. She

:19:22. > :19:24.was involved in major action in the Falklands War and was severdly

:19:25. > :19:27.damaged during the action and claimed a number of hits on

:19:28. > :19:28.Argentinian aircraft also. Onto some sports news and

:19:29. > :19:29.in last night's football, Yeovil Town at last got off the mark

:19:30. > :19:33.in League One with a good away win. Plymouth Argyle staved

:19:34. > :19:35.off defeat with a late penalty, while Exeter City still wait for

:19:36. > :19:38.their first win of the new season. Yeovil Town relied on two mdmbers

:19:39. > :19:41.of their promotion`winning team at Wembley last year to delhver

:19:42. > :19:44.the goods at Walsall. James Hayter was

:19:45. > :19:47.in the right place at the rhght time to finish off an accurate cross from

:19:48. > :19:50.Kevin Dawson to put them on the path The Midlanders wiped that ott to

:19:51. > :19:56.set up what could have been a few But Gary Johnson's boys movdd

:19:57. > :20:01.forward with purpose and Dawson swooped to score the winner

:20:02. > :20:07.in an encouraging 2`1 result. At Home Park,

:20:08. > :20:10.Plymouth Argyle were on the verge of going down to Stevenage who took

:20:11. > :20:15.an early second half lead. They held that

:20:16. > :20:18.until the eighth minute of `dded time, when a handball offence led to

:20:19. > :20:21.a penalty which Dean Smallex duly despatched to earn a 1`1 dr`w

:20:22. > :20:27.in front of a relieved 6,000 crowd. Exeter City are left

:20:28. > :20:29.frustrated once again. Still without a victory

:20:30. > :20:37.in league and cup, they went Former Weymouth striker

:20:38. > :20:39.Stuart Beavon did the damagd just before the interval to leavd City

:20:40. > :20:41.with only one point from Plymouth diver Tom Daley has

:20:42. > :20:51.finished a disappointing fotrth in the men's 10 metre synchronised

:20:52. > :20:53.event at the European Diving The 20`year`old, along with

:20:54. > :20:59.his new diving partner James Denney, was in the silver medal poshtion

:21:00. > :21:03.going into the final round. But they failed to maintain their

:21:04. > :21:23.form and missed out on a medal. It is one of the big events in the

:21:24. > :21:29.Dorset calendar and bumper crowds have turned out for the Weylouth

:21:30. > :21:37.Carnival. We can cross to the town very much in a party mood.

:21:38. > :21:41.Good evening, Weymouth has been teeming with visitors and it still

:21:42. > :21:47.is this evening, soaking up the beautiful sunshine and the carnival

:21:48. > :21:53.atmosphere. The grand procession got underway about half an hour ago and

:21:54. > :21:56.you can see everybody behind me Luckily the military band

:21:57. > :22:01.quite here yet. Probably thd favourite with the crowd was the red

:22:02. > :22:09.arrows. Nine aircraft in of the pilots from the front line

:22:10. > :22:12.squadron, today, they are ldd by Jim Turner, the Squadron Leader. The red

:22:13. > :22:18.arrows have flown more displays in 55 countries since their

:22:19. > :22:24.first performance back in 1865. Letters take a look now at the

:22:25. > :22:30.events leading up to today's grand procession.

:22:31. > :22:40.It is 5pm and the tension is building. Usually, reserved folk

:22:41. > :22:46.turn into animals. In contr`st, on the beach, there is some calm

:22:47. > :22:52.anticipation. A big party tonight. I am going to dress like a witch. I

:22:53. > :22:59.will dress like a princess, Cinderella. I heard some good things

:23:00. > :23:11.about it from last year. It is a big thing. It is our first time in

:23:12. > :23:15.Weymouth. We will see. Earlher, the first of two are displays bx

:23:16. > :23:20.aircraft from the First World War. I am quite

:23:21. > :23:24.working, because they have been through a lot. Their

:23:25. > :23:27.probably nearly breaking down. Staying with the military

:23:28. > :23:31.this carnival queen, believd it or not, is in the territorial @rmy I

:23:32. > :23:38.love all of it, I love the field, I love all of thd

:23:39. > :23:44.lessons, I enjoy it. Visitors cannot get enough. You have got yotr

:23:45. > :23:50.holiday`makers because of school holiday, but we have as a lot of

:23:51. > :23:55.they book year after year bdcause they love this week. With the added

:23:56. > :24:00.bonus that millions into the local economy

:24:01. > :24:06.The weather couldn't have bden been sunshine all day. It is

:24:07. > :24:12.difficult to here, but hundreds of thous`nds At

:24:13. > :24:18.last's event, there million, so we have to see hf we can

:24:19. > :24:24.equal that! Back to you in Thank you.

:24:25. > :24:29.That is a lot of people! A Guinness world record! The weather, very

:24:30. > :24:30.to Weymouth, but it has not been like that across the south`west
