:00:10. > :00:17.Freedom fears: Concerns that So it's goodbye from me,

:00:18. > :00:26.Jersey's new law giving us access to information won't go far enough.

:00:27. > :00:37.Even members cannot ask questions in the States and get an answer.

:00:38. > :00:40.Coming to the end of its life: Guernsey's government to decide

:00:41. > :00:46.what to do with the islands only crematorium.

:00:47. > :01:01.for the housing estate once labelled unsafe and uninhabitable.

:01:02. > :01:03.There's concern that a new Freedom of Information law

:01:04. > :01:12.From January 2015 islanders will have the right to access information

:01:13. > :01:15.held by public authorities like they do in the UK.

:01:16. > :01:18.The Freedom of Information Act in the United Kingdom means

:01:19. > :01:25.Most requests made are free, but a request can be refused if

:01:26. > :01:29.Tonight though there are claims in Jersey that some companies

:01:30. > :01:39.How many crimes are committed near where you live?

:01:40. > :01:43.From next year this is the sort of question anyone will be able

:01:44. > :01:46.Under Jersey's new Freedom of Information law,

:01:47. > :01:50.government organisations such as the police and health departments

:01:51. > :01:54.will be legally bound to disclose how money is spent or how decisions

:01:55. > :01:59.But as it stands at the moment the law doesn't cover

:02:00. > :02:08.For example, the former housing department now Andium Homes which

:02:09. > :02:11.has 10,000 homes in Jersey, or the telecoms company JT, which provides

:02:12. > :02:23.There are maybe some Batam a longer open because they have been

:02:24. > :02:25.privatised. And this is a concern. There are elements within the Jersey

:02:26. > :02:31.government that want to privatise an awful lot. And if they are privatise

:02:32. > :02:33.them even states members cannot ask questions in the States and get an

:02:34. > :02:37.answer, so these will remain hidden and secret.

:02:38. > :02:39.Data Protection Commissioner Emma Martins will be in charge

:02:40. > :02:43.She says it marks a brand new era in openness but there are still

:02:44. > :02:55.The states have the still decide who is covered by FOI from January. So

:02:56. > :03:00.there is still work to be done, and that respect, to clarify exactly,

:03:01. > :03:01.but most of the States departments, like ourselves, will be covered from

:03:02. > :03:04.the 1st of January. The UK has had a Freedom

:03:05. > :03:06.of Information Act for almost ten years now ` Jersey's

:03:07. > :03:10.law is just months away from coming in but it seems the final list of

:03:11. > :03:13.exactly which government bodies will The head

:03:14. > :03:16.of Condor Ferries has resigned. James Fulford has been

:03:17. > :03:19.the chief executive of the company It's been a difficult year for

:03:20. > :03:24.the company with a strike over pay and conditions for ferry staff in

:03:25. > :03:27.St Malo in January, and the delays and cancellations caused by the

:03:28. > :03:30.damage to the freight and passenger Mr Fulford's decision was announced

:03:31. > :03:34.to staff in a letter this morning. Condor's non`executive chairman

:03:35. > :03:40.Russel Kew takes up the post. A Jersey politician could face

:03:41. > :03:42.disciplinary action following a tweet he made

:03:43. > :03:47.about another States member. St Helier number one Deputy,

:03:48. > :03:49.Nick le Cornu, posted online what appeared to be a sexist comment

:03:50. > :03:52.about Deputy Kristina Moore, He's been expelled from Reform

:03:53. > :03:58.Jersey ` a political party he helped The Privileges and

:03:59. > :04:01.Procedures Committee, which decides whether disciplinary

:04:02. > :04:03.action should be taken, is meeting tomorrow morning ahead of the States

:04:04. > :04:11.sitting to discuss the issue. Less people have visited Guernsey

:04:12. > :04:14.this Spring compared to last year. There were 5,700 fewer visitors to

:04:15. > :04:17.the island in April, May and June. route were the biggest factors

:04:18. > :04:42.for the fall. Radon occurs naturally in

:04:43. > :04:44.underground rocks and can build up in poorly ventilated homes.

:04:45. > :04:49.Long`term exposure of the gas has been linked to lung cancer. In a

:04:50. > :04:52.report released today, the environment and health departments

:04:53. > :04:56.have been accused of complacency despite figures showing that must

:04:57. > :05:01.the fifth of homes tested have high levels of radon. When we ask

:05:02. > :05:06.questions we get, that is not our job, that is the job of another

:05:07. > :05:10.ministry, it is a problem for the householder whether they find out on

:05:11. > :05:14.the about it. That is too laid`back and what back separable. Radon is

:05:15. > :05:20.everywhere. It is no cause for alarm. But there is no cause for

:05:21. > :05:21.complacency, it is a known risk like lots of other things. And we need to

:05:22. > :05:27.take steps to manage it. Guernsey's only crematorium will

:05:28. > :05:30.need replacing in a few years time ` and work's started to look at what

:05:31. > :05:32.options there are. The facility

:05:33. > :05:34.at the Foulon cemetary is nearing As well as looking at what to

:05:35. > :05:39.replace it with, the States are also considering whether a different

:05:40. > :05:41.location would be better suited. It's a part of life most

:05:42. > :05:45.of us don't like to think about. But it's one

:05:46. > :05:51.the States are having to. The current crematorium here

:05:52. > :05:53.at the Foulon And with cremation

:05:54. > :05:56.an increasingly popular option, work's started to look

:05:57. > :06:05.at how to go about it. We are reaching the end of the

:06:06. > :06:11.projected life for the existing crematorium and it will no longer be

:06:12. > :06:13.economical to maintain so we have taken decision to evaluate the

:06:14. > :06:16.current installation with a to replacing it.

:06:17. > :06:20.Whatever the States chose to replace this facility with will need to meet

:06:21. > :06:22.that growing demand, but as well as considering that

:06:23. > :06:25.they're also looking at whether this is the best location for it.

:06:26. > :06:27.And those in the business of organising funerals

:06:28. > :06:33.are well aware of the limitations of the current site.

:06:34. > :06:49.It is a beautiful setting. But the current chapel is up a very steep

:06:50. > :06:54.knoll. You watch people walking up that steep hill, everybody arrives

:06:55. > :06:55.out of breath. We need a bigger facility for accommodating larger

:06:56. > :07:01.congregations. But the States hope to find

:07:02. > :07:05.a solution that's right You're watching the BBC

:07:06. > :07:09.in the Channel Islands. Later in Spotlight with Justin

:07:10. > :07:17.and Natalie: The rare Dartmoor discovery that

:07:18. > :07:19.casts light 50 new homes are expected to be

:07:20. > :07:31.ready at one of Guernsey's largest housing

:07:32. > :07:33.developments by November this year. More than ?6 million is being spent

:07:34. > :07:36.refurbishing Cour du Parc in St Peter Port after it was deemed

:07:37. > :07:41.unsafe and uninhabitable. Work also appears to be on time

:07:42. > :07:44.and on budget according to the Jen Smith has been to see

:07:45. > :07:55.for herself. Guernsey's Cour du Parc is having

:07:56. > :07:59.a makeover. 50 flats are being built here

:08:00. > :08:01.at Cour du Parc. This one here on the top floor is

:08:02. > :08:06.nearly finished, but on the And that's because the high rise has

:08:07. > :08:14.been refurbished from the top down. This is the master bedroom, first

:08:15. > :08:20.room as you come through the door. When work is finished here, all

:08:21. > :08:23.of the flats will look like this. Around two`thirds will be used

:08:24. > :08:25.for social housing, And they'll all be kitted out

:08:26. > :08:40.with the latest mod cons. I don't think any building this size

:08:41. > :08:43.has been clouded with the cladding we have got here. It is a very

:08:44. > :08:49.modern cladding. I don't think that the windows here have been used on

:08:50. > :08:50.the island before but at this height, you have to have specialised

:08:51. > :08:54.windows. At around 100 feet high,

:08:55. > :08:58.those living on the top floor will One of the workers, who has vertigo,

:08:59. > :09:07.had to go up in a cage. But that's not something residents

:09:08. > :09:12.will have to worry about, as a lift will be installed by

:09:13. > :09:33.the time they move in, in November. You could almost see my panda eyes

:09:34. > :09:41.from where I have had my sunglasses on this evening. There is not really

:09:42. > :09:46.any rain and the forecast all the way through this week ahead. It is

:09:47. > :09:51.fine and dry. There will be some sunshine and it will feel pleasantly

:09:52. > :09:56.warm. It will be a little bit chilly at night. That high pressure is not

:09:57. > :10:01.immediately clear when you look at the satellite picture. We have some

:10:02. > :10:06.cloud floating around this corner of Europe. But that area of high

:10:07. > :10:11.pressure is here to stay. It moves a little bit further away from us, but

:10:12. > :10:19.then it goes again and by the middle of the week, it is well and truly in

:10:20. > :10:21.charge. There is more the breeze between southern England and

:10:22. > :10:24.Northern France so it could be cooler by the time we get to

:10:25. > :10:30.Wednesday with that easterly breeze developing. It'll a fine evening

:10:31. > :10:35.tonight, and temperatures will get down as low as 14 Celsius. The wind

:10:36. > :10:41.will be gentle and from the north`east. It will pick up into the

:10:42. > :10:45.afternoon and early evening tomorrow. It is another fine day

:10:46. > :10:51.tomorrow with plenty of sunshine. If you see any cloud, it will be patchy

:10:52. > :10:56.and thin and most of us will not even notice it. Temperatures at

:10:57. > :11:05.around 21 Celsius, possibly, in Jersey. Just more of a breeze for

:11:06. > :11:15.those east facing coasts. And the coastal waters forecast.

:11:16. > :11:40.For the surfers... And here is the outlook as we head towards the end

:11:41. > :11:45.of the week. An increase in the amount of cloud and in the breeze,

:11:46. > :11:48.but if you get out of the wind it will still feel quite warm with

:11:49. > :11:54.temperatures at around 21 Celsius, but more cloud towards the end of

:11:55. > :11:58.the beat. But I should stress that it is continuing to be dry as we

:11:59. > :12:05.head into the weekend. `` the end of the week. A few more days left on

:12:06. > :12:11.the beach by the looks of things. I will be back with the evening update

:12:12. > :12:17.at 8pm, and again at 10:25pm. We will see you a bit later. There is

:12:18. > :12:26.more on your BBC local radio stations. Goodbye for now.

:12:27. > :12:27.For now the football pitch lies empty and dog walkers are key ring

:12:28. > :12:33.`` keeping their dogs on a lead. Vandals have set fire to a pair

:12:34. > :12:36.of huge straw figures The straw man and

:12:37. > :12:40.his dog were advertising the annual Crantock Bale Push which has raised

:12:41. > :12:42.thousands of pounds for charities. The arson attack on Saturday night

:12:43. > :12:45.came a day after vandals had The Bale Push will take place

:12:46. > :12:50.on Friday evening. Thousands of people turned out to

:12:51. > :12:52.a packed Dorset County Show over Organisers were pleased with

:12:53. > :12:57.the size of the crowds. More than 2000 animals

:12:58. > :13:01.were shown and there were 90 food stands demonstrating

:13:02. > :13:15.delicacies produced in the county. A fur pelt found

:13:16. > :13:17.in an ancient burial chamber on Dartmoor has led experts to believe

:13:18. > :13:20.that bears once lived on the moor. It's thought the bronze age grave or

:13:21. > :13:23.cist was possibly Archaeologists say the find is one

:13:24. > :13:27.of a kind as Jemma Woodman reports. Well, who would have thought that

:13:28. > :13:30.nearly 4000 years ago bears may well have roamed this wild

:13:31. > :13:32.and rugged landscape. And we were always told that

:13:33. > :13:34.the Beast Joining me is Jane from the

:13:35. > :13:40.Dartmoor National Park. Nicely framed under

:13:41. > :13:44.this lovely tree. Tell me, could bears really

:13:45. > :13:49.have roamed Dartmoor? We know that there were bears

:13:50. > :13:53.around in England as a whole So until about 400AD there were

:13:54. > :13:59.still bears present in the country. Everything to do with

:14:00. > :14:07.the cist has been a first actually. I don't think that there is any

:14:08. > :14:12.other finding of a pelt from this period 4000 years ago within

:14:13. > :14:15.a burial context in this country. And it was difficult to identify,

:14:16. > :14:18.wasn't it, why was that? To begin with

:14:19. > :14:21.when they actually recovered the pelt we thought it was going to

:14:22. > :14:25.be easy, we could do DNA on it. But unfortunately

:14:26. > :14:28.because the pelt was in peat it has destroyed any DNA it once contained

:14:29. > :14:35.so we had to go to an alternative analysis technique and that was

:14:36. > :14:37.looking at proteins within the fur. I don't begin to understand how that

:14:38. > :14:44.worked but it has taken a lot of specialists a lot of time and going

:14:45. > :14:48.through that went through a whole lot of animals that it could have

:14:49. > :14:51.been, ranging from seals and camels. And now they are absolutely

:14:52. > :15:05.definite it is a bear. Why was a bear pelt

:15:06. > :15:07.in this burial chamber? It was actually used to wrap up

:15:08. > :15:09.cremated remains of the person who had been cremated and

:15:10. > :15:13.then placed in their cist and it was There is a suggestion that this was

:15:14. > :15:17.a cloak belonging to this person and was a suitable per thing to wrap

:15:18. > :15:20.up the remains. There are lots of other things,

:15:21. > :15:22.weren't there, Over 200 beads, including

:15:23. > :15:28.amber beads, which obviously In the most beautiful bag in

:15:29. > :15:43.which all the things were placed so we think that this was the person's

:15:44. > :15:47.bag, I am saying her because we are Jane,

:15:48. > :15:50.thank you very much for joining us. You can see and discover more

:15:51. > :15:53.about these grave goods at an exhibition at Plymouth's

:15:54. > :15:55.museum which starts this Saturday. To find out more before then,

:15:56. > :15:58.do join me tonight for Inside Out It's time for the sport now

:15:59. > :16:10.and there was a dream start for Exeter Chiefs

:16:11. > :16:13.in the Premiership this weekend as However as one team

:16:14. > :16:20.in the city celebrated another commiserated ` Exeter City hit

:16:21. > :16:22.the bottom of the football league. To discuss the contrasting fortunes

:16:23. > :16:25.I was joined earlier by Torquay United manager Chris

:16:26. > :16:29.Hargreaves and former professional A great weekend

:16:30. > :16:36.of sport to talk about but we have I just had a small job on in

:16:37. > :16:48.the interim but great to be back. We haven't seen you for

:16:49. > :16:51.so long then all of a sudden you win It is important for us

:16:52. > :16:57.at the moment. A great win for them this weekend

:16:58. > :17:02.as well. A tough place to go,

:17:03. > :17:11.newly promoted Luton. Probably had too much time to think

:17:12. > :17:19.about it, natural instinct would normally take over

:17:20. > :17:22.but the winning goal was sublime. I wouldn't have done this

:17:23. > :17:31.but Dominic did. Brilliant footwork there

:17:32. > :17:36.and a superb finishe. PLayed in the 21s game

:17:37. > :17:41.in the week to get In contrast Exeter City haven't won

:17:42. > :17:48.all season and obviously not No, you can get yourself

:17:49. > :17:53.into a lot of results. It is a difficult position to be

:17:54. > :17:56.in and it is a tough job. Mansfield ` big strong side,

:17:57. > :17:59.quicker to react there and score Mansfield are a big team

:18:00. > :18:03.and they are always looking for Ten games in, a brilliant goal from

:18:04. > :18:18.Matt Grimes one of my old sixteens. Just couldn't quite get back

:18:19. > :18:21.into the game. You are not too worried

:18:22. > :18:24.about them yet? No, you cannot pass judgement

:18:25. > :18:27.at this stage of the season. Let's go on to what must be

:18:28. > :18:30.the result of the weekend. I know, but before I start with this

:18:31. > :18:37.have to explain these trousers. Normally Chris comes out in mint

:18:38. > :18:40.green but he's let down today. I invited you to a fancy dress,

:18:41. > :18:43.you turned up and I didn't. Aaron Martin scored twice

:18:44. > :20:24.in the first 25 minutes to put Bradford pulled one back soon

:20:25. > :20:31.after but AJ Leitch`Smith made sure there'd be no comeback with this

:20:32. > :20:39.superb strike to seal the win. Roseland gig club took the title

:20:40. > :20:42.at the Ladies County Championships The Roseland A crew beat

:20:43. > :20:48.the host side into second place with Mounts Bay and Caradon finishing

:20:49. > :20:49.third and fourth. 700 gig rowers from across Cornwall

:20:50. > :20:53.were taking part in the hugely To the detriment of lots

:20:54. > :21:06.of other things. You cannot go out as much

:21:07. > :21:09.as you like, you see family less than you'd like because we are

:21:10. > :21:11.on the water in training. We love it

:21:12. > :21:14.and we're such a tight`knit crew Well picking up as many skills

:21:15. > :21:29.as you can is a start. And from the playing field to

:21:30. > :21:31.the growing field ` that's exactly how a Cornish charity

:21:32. > :21:34.has been helping a group of people with learning difficulties

:21:35. > :21:38.as Hamish Marshall reports. This is a cricket team of people

:21:39. > :21:42.in gardens. Those who work on placement with

:21:43. > :21:45.the college charity of learning It gives them

:21:46. > :21:52.the life experience and helps them Playing sport helps

:21:53. > :21:59.build confidence too. What is your strength in cricket,

:22:00. > :22:05.batting or bowling? It is going to be a good day today,

:22:06. > :22:14.lots of fun and that. And these are the results

:22:15. > :22:16.of people in gardens at work. Produce grown

:22:17. > :22:19.at the hostel is sold fortnightly And the cricket team looks

:22:20. > :22:26.the part too. Ahead of a fundraising match

:22:27. > :22:28.against The Eden Project, The cash was raised by investors

:22:29. > :22:33.putting in small amounts of money. I used crowdfunding

:22:34. > :22:38.and that was really, really useful. It gave us a lot of exposure

:22:39. > :22:41.in the community and also we actually raised above

:22:42. > :22:51.the amount we wanted to so we have On the pitch, Eden bat first in what

:22:52. > :22:56.is a fiercely contested match. They raised ?800 last year and it

:22:57. > :22:59.is hoped they would do so again to It helps me get out of the house,

:23:00. > :23:04.doing something in the community and we grow lettuces, rockets,

:23:05. > :23:15.we grow runner beans and we have The extra funding is allowing people

:23:16. > :23:44.to strengthen both at work and It is really like summer is back.

:23:45. > :23:48.Pretty good for the second week in September. There is more to come as

:23:49. > :23:55.well. High pressure is well and truly in charge. This time last year

:23:56. > :24:01.the weather started to change. For this week ahead, it is dry and find

:24:02. > :24:07.and the warm sunshine continues. The only downside is it will be a little

:24:08. > :24:15.bit at night. No rain in the forecast. Cloud in the satellite

:24:16. > :24:18.picture. A lot of it is hazy. The area of high pressure moves around a

:24:19. > :24:22.little bit over the next few days. This is the middle of the day on

:24:23. > :24:24.Tuesday. It has moved away certainly by the middle of the day on

:24:25. > :24:30.Wednesday and it will bring an easterly breeze as we move into the

:24:31. > :24:34.latter part of the week. Still dry and largely fine and one. Today we

:24:35. > :24:37.have had a build`up of cloud but the most of us the weather has been

:24:38. > :24:42.fine. It is quite hazy. This was earlier today at a beach where there

:24:43. > :24:55.was some lovely weather. Glorious sunshine. They see temperature is 17

:24:56. > :25:09.degrees ``. This fine weather continuing. There is not much for

:25:10. > :25:13.our servers though. `` surfers. Let's follow the progress of what is

:25:14. > :25:17.happening overnight tonight. Some is forming later in the night and maybe

:25:18. > :25:22.some fog patches in the valleys. Most of us clear and dried.

:25:23. > :25:25.Temperatures falling away quite smartly. Last night we had single
