:02:47. > :02:49.police believed their prime suspect was a Burmese migrant worker, today

:02:50. > :02:52.the focus has moved to two brothers from Jersey. The BBC's Jon`than

:02:53. > :02:55.Head is in the island of Koh Tao and says the Thai police are under

:02:56. > :03:06.On the spot of where they dhed. This crime scene was never sealed off, it

:03:07. > :03:08.is unlikely they will find `nything now. Instead they believe forensic

:03:20. > :03:25.British embassy officials were invited to the police

:03:26. > :03:38.hospital in Bangkok to see what progress they were making. They are

:03:42. > :03:58.the victims in the days before they were killed.

:03:59. > :04:07.The police must know that bdcause of the international scrutiny, this

:04:08. > :04:10.investigation must be seen `s a credible one.

:04:22. > :04:24.These are the faces of the 09 senatorial candidates who w`nt

:04:25. > :04:27.people in Jersey to vote thdm into power. But only eight of thdm will

:04:32. > :04:34.Minister all hoping to get re elected. Three senators are standing

:04:35. > :04:36.down. Three politicians, Deputies Green, Power and Young, want to move

:04:37. > :04:40.across to the senatorial benches and be voted in by the whole island

:05:58. > :05:59.tonight is the nominations dvening for constables and deputies across

:06:00. > :06:03.the island ` so those names will be up on the website later tonhght or

:06:27. > :06:29.suggested to make up a deficit in The States' finances. An option

:06:30. > :06:32.didn't go down well at a medting today. Penny Elderfield reports

:06:33. > :06:37.A lot of concerns. Caused bx the mention of just three letters. This

:06:38. > :06:41.leading economist was brought in to look at the impact of a GST on

:06:42. > :06:52.Guernsey. Brought in by bushness groups arguably against it from the

:06:53. > :07:10.start. Before The States have even decided its happening. But the end

:07:11. > :07:12.conclusion here today was don?t go there.

:07:13. > :07:26.we buy, and use is just one option The States are considering to bring

:07:27. > :07:34.in more money. The actual proposals won't be out till later this year.

:07:35. > :07:41.If the goods and services t`x where to come in and that was accompanied

:07:42. > :07:47.by reductions in income tax, those are questions that need to be

:07:48. > :07:58.answered. Raise your hand if you would like to see GST introduced.

:07:59. > :08:11.And it's by no means a done deal. If this audience is anything to go by

:08:27. > :08:29.Athletes are training at FB Fields in Jersey again, after around three

:08:30. > :08:32.quarters of a million pounds was spent sprucing it up for next

:08:33. > :08:37.summer's Island Games. The track itself was in such bad repahr it was

:08:38. > :08:38.causing injuries. Jonathan De La Haye reports.

:08:39. > :08:45.The work here at the FB Fields includes a fresh surface for the

:08:46. > :08:48.running track, a new supporters Grand Stand and much of it has been

:08:49. > :08:55.painted in red, Jersey's national colour. It's all ahead of the Island

:08:56. > :09:01.Games, but why was the makeover so badly needed?

:09:02. > :09:08.You can see all the lines and all the markings and it gives a boost to

:09:09. > :09:24.the athletes themselves. It will help reduce injury. It will make

:09:25. > :09:31.everything faster as well. The facilities are used by many island

:09:32. > :09:33.groups. There is an opportunity for it to be better used and we hope

:09:34. > :09:39.that more and more people t`ke part. It's hoped the newly relaid

:09:40. > :09:42.athletics track here at FB Fields will be a lasting legacy of the

:09:43. > :09:45.Island Games next year. And that these young sports people whll

:09:46. > :10:14.benefit from having a better track It is one during the night time as

:10:15. > :10:17.well as during the daytime. ``warm. We are doing very well with

:10:18. > :10:21.temperatures but sunshine whll be a bit limited and we will see more

:10:22. > :10:25.cloud around. We will also see the thread tomorrow off some showers

:10:26. > :10:30.turning up. There are some showers just to the site of us at the

:10:31. > :10:34.moment. We have almost an identical set up to what we saw last week and

:10:35. > :10:38.the differences we do not h`ve high pressure across the southern part of

:10:39. > :10:42.Britain down across the English Channel. We have a line of cloud

:10:43. > :10:47.which is the focal point for showers over the next short while. This area

:10:48. > :10:51.of cloud tries to get a little closer but does not make it. This

:10:52. > :10:56.area of high pressure starts to come back towards the end of the weekend

:10:57. > :11:00.but in the interim that has already high risk of seeing some showers.

:11:01. > :11:03.Some will be around this evdning and some are just coming up to the

:11:04. > :11:08.southern end of the Channel Islands at the moment and more as wd move

:11:09. > :11:11.into the evening tomorrow evening. If anything these showers are likely

:11:12. > :11:17.to be night`time features for us. It will then be a bit misty and look at

:11:18. > :11:20.the temperatures. They are between 70 degrees and 80 degrees so one

:11:21. > :11:26.start the day tomorrow and `fter the low cloud has lifted we will see

:11:27. > :11:29.some hazy sunshine for the time but was end of the afternoon and towards

:11:30. > :11:34.the early evening, we will start seeing captures of 23 degreds 2

:11:35. > :11:46.degrees and then at the showers will appear which could continue

:11:47. > :11:55.overnight. Times of high water are just before one o'clock in the

:11:56. > :12:02.afternoon and St Helier. ``hn St Helier. We could well see showers in

:12:03. > :12:11.the night`time hours, espechally tomorrow night. Two Jersey brothers

:12:12. > :12:27.are being questioned by polhce in Thailand over the murder of the

:12:28. > :12:39.friend, David Mellor. ``Davhd Miller.

:12:40. > :12:54.Plus from the news of the present to the news of the past.

:12:55. > :12:57.Tomorrow, the people of Scotland will be voting on

:12:58. > :13:01.whether or not to leave the United Kingdom after more than 300 years.

:13:02. > :13:07.Only people in Scotland are entitled to vote

:13:08. > :13:10.but the consequences will affect us all, with polls suggesting the

:13:11. > :13:18.Our Political Editor Martyn Oates joins us now.

:13:19. > :13:24.This will have an impact. I think it is finally dawning on everybody that

:13:25. > :13:29.there will be profound implhcations for the rest of the country,

:13:30. > :13:36.possibly specific consequences for us in the south`west.

:13:37. > :13:39.If there's a yes vote, the really big issue is whether

:13:40. > :13:41.the South West will become home to the country's nuclear submarines.

:13:42. > :13:44.The Scottish National Party says it wants them out of Scotland

:13:45. > :13:46.and experts suggest Devonport or Falmouth are

:13:47. > :14:14.We could also get the bigger fish "for our fishermen `` a bigger

:14:15. > :14:22.fishing quarter. If there is a no vote, but are also ramifications.

:14:23. > :14:26.Scotland will get more powers, at least that is what the leaddrs of

:14:27. > :14:31.the three main parties are seeing. If that happens, there needs to be a

:14:32. > :14:35.new constitutional settlement, a new arrangement of powers in England as

:14:36. > :14:41.well. What would that mean? An Ingush parliament possibly. More

:14:42. > :14:48.devolution to English regions or cities. In this part of the world,

:14:49. > :14:53.possibly a Cornish Assembly. Would a Scottish MP be able to vote on

:14:54. > :14:59.English issues? Many MPs ard adamant that that must not happen. @nd that

:15:00. > :15:06.could open up some interesthng possibilities. If Scottish LPs are

:15:07. > :15:17.excluded from the vote and hunting, could the hunting ban in England the

:15:18. > :15:26.overturned? Could we moved to British summer Time all year round?

:15:27. > :15:29.What is the way forward? Evdrybody agrees that there needs to be big

:15:30. > :15:36.changes, something needs to be done, but there are disagreements as to

:15:37. > :15:39.what exactly should be done. Tory MPs are unhappy about this promise

:15:40. > :15:44.of big powers and new financial commitments to Scotland without any

:15:45. > :15:47.consultation of Parliament. Stormy times ahead for us all. And no sleep

:15:48. > :15:56.for you? Not much. There's more on the referendum

:15:57. > :15:59.on the BBC news website and much more, of course, following the

:16:00. > :16:01.result, here on Friday's Spotlight. Now,

:16:02. > :16:03.pubs have moved into former banks, post offices have taken up residence

:16:04. > :16:06.in churches, and libraries have even There's been a fair bit of lateral

:16:07. > :16:10.thinking in rural England rdcently. Now one local library is trxing to

:16:11. > :16:15.protect its future by moving Brenda Best

:16:16. > :16:16.and her eight`year`old granddaughter It is a curious truth that

:16:17. > :16:23.grasshoppers have their hearing They are avid users of

:16:24. > :16:32.their local library in Ashbtrton. I like doing the reading ch`llenges

:16:33. > :16:38.and even just the reading, H really I enjoy reading and if it goes,

:16:39. > :16:50.where are we to get books? Ashburton is one

:16:51. > :16:52.of 28 libraries across Devon which face the axe unless the comlunity

:16:53. > :16:57.comes forward to help run them. Now a group here has come up with

:16:58. > :17:02.a novel idea to save it. Ashburton is threatened with losing

:17:03. > :17:05.its library that it has had The only way forward is to go

:17:06. > :17:18.into the post office and john with With both the library and

:17:19. > :17:22.the post office facing an uncertain future, perhaps combining forces

:17:23. > :17:29.could be the perfect solution. If I was sitting here 75 ye`rs ago

:17:30. > :17:33.tonight, I would be bringing you the news of the first British naval

:17:34. > :17:37.ship sunk in the Second World War. The aircraft carrier,

:17:38. > :17:39.based in Devonport, hadn't long left Plymouth when

:17:40. > :17:42.torpedoes from a German U`boat hit. More than 500 Royal Navy

:17:43. > :17:45.personnel were killed. Johnny Rutherford has been

:17:46. > :17:52.talking to one of the survivors September 1939,

:17:53. > :17:55.two weeks after war was declared with Germany, HMS Courageous left

:17:56. > :17:59.Plymouth to patrol the Irish Sea. On board was a 16`year`old lad

:18:00. > :18:04.from Torquay. We didn't appreciate it at first

:18:05. > :18:09.and it didn't really sink When we set sail with our escort,

:18:10. > :18:15.we thought, this is quite a good event, we're going to war,

:18:16. > :18:22.we're going to win the war. But on the evening of 17 September,

:18:23. > :18:29.German U`boat 29 attacked. Somebody said to me, what's the

:18:30. > :18:31.time? Just when I said that,

:18:32. > :18:37.the first torpedo hit us. The Navy has received a sevdre blow

:18:38. > :18:44.with the sinking of HMS Courageous We can take hard knocks

:18:45. > :18:49.as we intend to give them, John Cannon had jumped

:18:50. > :18:59.into the Atlantic after hearing A flight observer who was swimming

:19:00. > :19:04.close by holding onto an oar, he'd got an oar from somewhdre,

:19:05. > :19:06.he shouted, keep going, boy, keep going, son, your mum and dad will be

:19:07. > :19:20.waiting for you when you get home. 512 Royal Navy seaman lost their

:19:21. > :19:31.lives. John was eventually rescued and sent on to other missions.

:19:32. > :19:45.Including sinking their Gerlan ship this mark. A beautiful ship. We

:19:46. > :19:56.fired torpedoes at her. Bismarck sank to the bottom. One

:19:57. > :20:02.year later, HMS Terror search was sunk `` Dorset Shire was sunk by the

:20:03. > :20:07.Japanese and once again, John was swimming for his life. They flew

:20:08. > :20:13.across the survivors and machine`gunned us. But John was like

:20:14. > :20:21.a cat with nine lives, he m`naged to survive the war, despite wh`t it

:20:22. > :20:28.threw at him. Before I was 21, I had been in action against the Germans,

:20:29. > :20:34.the Vichy French, and the J`panese. He is now 91.

:20:35. > :20:37.Onto some sports news and it was a good evening for

:20:38. > :20:39.Exeter City and Torquay United in last night's football.

:20:40. > :20:41.City won for the first time this season and United have shot

:20:42. > :20:45.But for Yeovil Town and Plymouth Argyle, it was

:20:46. > :20:49.a frustrating time at home `s Spotlight's Dave Gibbins reports.

:20:50. > :20:53.If you want a flutter on a home draw, then just look at Yeovil Town.

:20:54. > :20:56.Last night's one`all result against bottom side Crewe Alexandra

:20:57. > :21:00.was their third draw from four attempts to win at Huish Park.

:21:01. > :21:11.After falling behind, the keeper was head and shotlders

:21:12. > :21:14.above the rest to give the Glovers much relief and only the width

:21:15. > :21:17.of a post denied Gary Johnson's men their first win on Somerset soil.

:21:18. > :21:19.Next to the enigma which is Plymouth Argyle.

:21:20. > :21:22.After beating two teams who are fancied to be promotion challengers,

:21:23. > :21:25.the Pilgrims have now gone down to two straight defeats, the l`test to

:21:26. > :21:27.Wycombe Wanderers with ex`Argyle loan striker Paul Hayes inflicting

:21:28. > :21:35.But it is all smiles today `t Exeter City.

:21:36. > :21:40.They produced the result of the night, beating confident

:21:41. > :21:43.league newcomers Cambridge Tnited by two goals to one.

:21:44. > :21:45.Even after conceding early on, City stormed back thanks to

:21:46. > :21:47.Graham Cummins who then set up loanee Alex Nichols for

:21:48. > :21:53.However, they still remain at the bottom two of League Two

:21:54. > :22:00.Torquay United are the form team in the Conference.

:22:01. > :22:02.Skipper Luke Young's tradem`rk free kick in the last minute

:22:03. > :22:04.against previously unbeaten Woking at Plainmoor elevated United to

:22:05. > :22:16.second, giving them their fifth consecutive success

:22:17. > :22:18.Now how's this for a run of good luck?

:23:05. > :23:07.I said, do you want to have a look `t this?

:23:08. > :23:19.It's just something that happens to other people.

:23:20. > :23:22.You just don't think it is going to happen to you.

:24:08. > :24:12.Having spent a bit of time with Vanessa and Rodney today, I can

:24:13. > :24:15.honestly say I don't think this lottery win could have happdned to

:24:16. > :24:22.So far, Vanessa and Rodney have splashed out on a new car.

:24:23. > :24:25.But they haven't made up their minds what to do with

:24:26. > :24:35.They're too busy enjoying their adventure.

:24:36. > :24:45.Good luck to them. Time for a look at the

:24:46. > :24:50.Good evening, a few changes for the next few days, and then high

:24:51. > :25:00.pressure comes back. Unusually warm at the moment. Especially at night.

:25:01. > :25:03.Tomorrow, there will be somd sunshine, but we are also sdeing a

:25:04. > :25:08.risk of showers developing. More cloud across as at the moment and

:25:09. > :25:13.that is threatening a few showers, some approaching the Channel Islands

:25:14. > :25:16.later tonight. We still havd this area of low`pressure. It is a bit

:25:17. > :25:25.more dominant now. It is fedding strands of cloud and bands of

:25:26. > :25:28.showers towards us tomorrow night and into Friday. Some of those

:25:29. > :25:35.showers could turn out to bd abundantly. After that, that area of

:25:36. > :25:38.high pressure moves back in. That was the picture earlier tod`y. You

:25:39. > :25:43.can see how we had a few showers coming out of northern France. But

:25:44. > :25:52.for a more robust `` for most of us, it has been dry but cloudy.

:25:53. > :26:01.Just enough surf for surfers to catch a wave. Surfing conditions are

:26:02. > :26:13.very similar to for tomorrow. C temperature is around 17 degrees.

:26:14. > :26:17.The satellite picture shows that band of cloud. That will move away

:26:18. > :26:21.for a while and it will turn their stay in places. Those easterly winds

:26:22. > :26:25.will drop, but later in the night, we will see a few showers, forcibly
