:00:02. > :00:12.That ease it for now. Continuing coverage on the BBC News Channel.

:00:12. > :00:27.

:00:27. > :00:29.Now though it's time for the news Welcome to BBC London News. I'm

:00:29. > :00:32.Alice Bhandhukravi. Over half a million people are

:00:32. > :00:35.expected in west London for the second day of the Notting Hill

:00:35. > :00:38.Carnival. Last night, three men were stabbed in the area, but the

:00:38. > :00:46.Met Police says it will be maintaining a strong presence today

:00:46. > :00:50.with 7000 officers on patrol. Police say there will be 7,000

:00:50. > :00:55.officers patrolling the event. Police advice is that if anyone

:00:55. > :01:00.wants to cause trouble, they should simply stay away. Last night there

:01:00. > :01:08.were 96 arrests for drug and public order offences. Outside the

:01:08. > :01:15.Carnival, three men were stabbed. A third man -- two men were released

:01:15. > :01:20.from hospital but a third man remains in hospital. Joining us now

:01:20. > :01:27.is Lewis then from Carnival. It is unfortunate about yesterday with

:01:27. > :01:31.the stabbings. Years. Those events which took place were after the

:01:31. > :01:37.route had finished so for us it was a celebration. Children came out in

:01:37. > :01:44.their masses and had a fantastic time. Much more for today. What is

:01:44. > :01:49.the theme today? Collaboration is one of the key things. We have the

:01:49. > :01:54.involvement of an event manager today. Thank you. By the end of

:01:54. > :01:57.today, more than a million people will have walked through the

:01:57. > :02:02.streets of Notting Hill Gate making this Europe's biggest street

:02:02. > :02:05.festival. The campaign group Disabled People

:02:05. > :02:07.Against Cuts will protest outside City Hall later against the

:02:07. > :02:09.Paralympic Games sponsor ATOS. Activists say the government

:02:10. > :02:14.contractor, which assesses benefit claimants, is unfairly judging some

:02:14. > :02:20.disabled people as fit to work forcing them to lose their benefits.

:02:20. > :02:23.ATOS says its assessments are as compassionate as they can be.

:02:23. > :02:26.A London council has been criticised over plans to close what

:02:26. > :02:29.it calls an under-used sports centre and build a new 17 million

:02:29. > :02:34.facility half-a-mile down the road. Westminster Council is proposing to

:02:34. > :02:43.turn the Jubilee Centre in Queens Park into private housing. But

:02:43. > :02:48.campaigners say local residents rely on the current facilities.

:02:48. > :02:53.they want to build flats here, whatever, our kids are not getting

:02:53. > :02:56.flak. The local people who use the community centre say it is a hub

:02:56. > :03:01.for the community and provides much-needed facilities for this

:03:01. > :03:06.part of Westminster, in one of the most deprived wards in London.

:03:06. > :03:10.people do not have transport, cars. There are lots of children who live

:03:11. > :03:15.on the Mozart estate who can just walk here. It is very easy for them

:03:15. > :03:19.to access. But the council is closing the sports centre in favour

:03:19. > :03:24.of what they say is a bigger and better one half a mile away. But

:03:24. > :03:29.some of the people using it at the moment are yet to be convinced.

:03:29. > :03:32.Local people are up in arms and I'm not surprised. There are not many

:03:32. > :03:36.swimming pools this side of Westminster Orin to grant. They

:03:36. > :03:41.have no reason to build flats here when they could build them in

:03:41. > :03:45.bigger buildings and they could put on wasteland. Taken on board some

:03:45. > :03:49.of the local descent, Westminster Council has agreed to build a new

:03:49. > :03:54.sports facilities alongside the new housing on this very sight. There

:03:54. > :03:59.are concerns, there is no doubt about that. We have undertaken an

:03:59. > :04:02.extensive public consultation exercise. We have had lots of

:04:02. > :04:07.feedback from people who recognise the new investment in community

:04:07. > :04:12.sport will be good for the new area. But equally from people from this

:04:12. > :04:16.locality who see the closure of the sports centre as a concern.

:04:16. > :04:19.properties could be built on the site. The project still needs the

:04:19. > :04:29.approval of the planners. Now a look at the weather with

:04:29. > :04:36.Good afternoon, we have a band of rain on the way from the West. For

:04:36. > :04:39.the rest of the afternoon, it should be a mostly dry picture. A

:04:39. > :04:45.bit of brightness towards South Eastern areas. That is the best of

:04:45. > :04:49.the temperatures. It will turn rather wet and breezy through this

:04:49. > :04:53.evening but a lovely day tomorrow with some sunny spells. It should
