:00:00. > :00:21.Tonight, on BBC London News, the mother of a teenager who took her

:00:22. > :00:32.own life warns of a dark side on the Internet. It is every parent's worst

:00:33. > :00:36.nightmare. How an increase in construction jobs has helped reduce

:00:37. > :00:39.unemployment in the capital. The new high`speed line ploughs on ` after

:00:40. > :00:43.campaigners lose a legal battle at the Supreme Court. And diver Tom

:00:44. > :01:02.Daley on coming out ` and coming to the capital.

:01:03. > :01:08.Good evening, welcome to the programme. The mother of a London

:01:09. > :01:13.teenager who killed herself has urged every parent to be aware of

:01:14. > :01:15.the dangers of the internet. At the inquest, a jury heard that

:01:16. > :01:18.15`year`old Tallulah Wilson was a gifted dancer who became obsessed

:01:19. > :01:24.with a fantasy world online to escape reality. Her family said in

:01:25. > :01:29.her last few weeks they could not reach her as she was "in the

:01:30. > :01:33.clutches of a toxic digital world". They say they are shocked by the

:01:34. > :01:34.ease with which children can access online self`harm and suicide blogs.

:01:35. > :01:47.Marc Ashdown reports. Described by the coroner is a very

:01:48. > :01:50.lovely looking young lady, but Tallulah Wilson wrote in her diary

:01:51. > :01:55.that she felt fat, ugly and worthless. The 15`year`old died when

:01:56. > :01:59.she was hit by a train at St pancreas in October 2012. The

:02:00. > :02:02.inquest jury today said the case highlighted the importance of online

:02:03. > :02:06.life for young people. In a statement read by her lawyer, her

:02:07. > :02:09.mother warned of the dangers on behalf of sisters and I did

:02:10. > :02:13.everything we could to keep her safe, but she had fallen into a

:02:14. > :02:17.world of nightmares. She was in the clutches of a toxic digital world,

:02:18. > :02:22.where, in the final few weeks, we could no longer reach her. I was

:02:23. > :02:29.shocked by the EE is with which this card and other children can access

:02:30. > :02:35.online self`harm and suicide blogs. One site she went on and encourages

:02:36. > :02:39.users to post pictures and blog about their interests. She created a

:02:40. > :02:44.secret online alias, a cocaine taking character, and posted

:02:45. > :02:48.pictures of self`inflicted cuts on her arms and also shared thoughts

:02:49. > :02:52.about suicide. Her obsession with the internet did not seem to affect

:02:53. > :02:56.school life here in north London. The headteacher said in a statement,

:02:57. > :02:57.Tallulah was a charming, effervescent and highly popular

:02:58. > :03:10.girl... She was being treated for

:03:11. > :03:13.depression, and her mother had one of the profiles shuts down after

:03:14. > :03:19.finding it. One leading charity which helps vulnerable young people

:03:20. > :03:25.says the sites themselves should take more responsibility. We are

:03:26. > :03:28.increasingly aware of the need for controls and support and education

:03:29. > :03:31.for young people themselves, and for parents and others who are concerned

:03:32. > :03:42.about their well`being. In a statement, one website said...

:03:43. > :03:49.It is of course too late for Tallulah Wilson, who escaped into a

:03:50. > :03:52.fantasy online life, which, this inquest found, eventually drove her

:03:53. > :04:00.to take her own life. Plenty more to come tonight,

:04:01. > :04:04.including... At 1.I thought, this guy is for real, this is going to go

:04:05. > :04:17.wrong. But then, you get on with it and you get on with your job. A

:04:18. > :04:22.story of heroism which has won this policeman an award for bravery.

:04:23. > :04:26.Campaigners have lost their latest legal battle against the HS2 rail

:04:27. > :04:28.link` after judges dismissed their claims that ministers had failed to

:04:29. > :04:31.consider fully the environmental impact. The Supreme Court rejected

:04:32. > :04:33.allegations that the Government was "cutting corners" to push through

:04:34. > :04:36.the high`speed rail line between London and the Midlands. Our

:04:37. > :04:50.political correspondent Karl Mercer has this report. The further appeal

:04:51. > :04:57.to this court is unanimous `` unanimously dismissed. Campaigners

:04:58. > :05:02.have been outside Parliament, but this morning, they had hoped to the

:05:03. > :05:08.courts might slow down plans for the north`south rail link. They did not

:05:09. > :05:11.get the result they wanted. We are disappointed because we have wanted

:05:12. > :05:14.it to go our way. But it is not the end of the road for us. We are going

:05:15. > :05:18.to keep fighting, we have other options open to us. We believe it is

:05:19. > :05:24.vital to press the Government to comply with their implications,

:05:25. > :05:28.which they have not done. `` obligations. Campaigners have said

:05:29. > :05:32.they will now look to Europe for further challenges to the high`speed

:05:33. > :05:37.link, but the Government says the is essential and be when people look at

:05:38. > :05:40.this ruling, I hope they will understand we really are taking care

:05:41. > :05:44.around the environment of issues. We recognise those concerns, we are

:05:45. > :05:47.putting in all kinds of litigation. But what is important about this

:05:48. > :05:52.project is that it is very much needed to give us the additional

:05:53. > :05:56.trains, additional seats on trains and capacity. These are the hard

:05:57. > :05:58.copies of the bill the Government is hoping to push through Parliament

:05:59. > :06:06.before the next election. They are being sent out to libraries from a

:06:07. > :06:11.depot in east London. The Government knows that at many points along the

:06:12. > :06:14.route, it will face further protests over its plans, but it says it wants

:06:15. > :06:26.to start work on HS2 in 2017. London is becoming a younger city,

:06:27. > :06:29.according to new research. Typically, many people would leave

:06:30. > :06:32.the capital after having children, because of schools or the need for

:06:33. > :06:35.larger homes. But one leading estate agent says there's a growing number

:06:36. > :06:43.of families who are now staying put. Jean MacKenzie reports. London has

:06:44. > :06:47.always been a young city, attracting people from across the world to work

:06:48. > :06:53.or study. But typically, when those people get older and have children,

:06:54. > :06:56.many decide to leave London. But new research shows that is changing,

:06:57. > :07:04.with many now deciding to stay put and raise a family here. I never,

:07:05. > :07:11.ever thought I would for me, London seemed a place to have fun, go out,

:07:12. > :07:15.meet new friends. But 13 years and two children later, Michelle, like

:07:16. > :07:21.many others, is still here. The average age of London has fallen by

:07:22. > :07:28.nearly two years over three decades, from 37.2 to 35.6. A rising birth

:07:29. > :07:32.rate and immigration have played a part, but so have changes to London

:07:33. > :07:37.itself. The quality of living in London has improved, we have seen a

:07:38. > :07:42.lot of regeneration. And so has the quality of schools. Schools are a

:07:43. > :07:49.lot better now than they were two decades ago. That is exactly how

:07:50. > :07:53.Emily feels. There is nothing pushing us to go. We always thought

:07:54. > :07:58.when we got to school age, we would have to go. But we live next door to

:07:59. > :08:01.an outstanding school. But fewer people leaving means not just a

:08:02. > :08:07.younger population, but a larger one. As the population of the city

:08:08. > :08:11.rises by 100,000 a year, a million every decade, that requires a large

:08:12. > :08:16.number of new houses, and all the things that go with it, or transport

:08:17. > :08:20.capacity, more everything. It is predicted that has the economy

:08:21. > :08:24.improves across the UK, more people may start to leave the capital

:08:25. > :08:31.again. But it is doubtful this city will ever lose its youthfulness.

:08:32. > :08:36.There has been some positive news on jobs today, with a fall in

:08:37. > :08:43.unemployment in London. Between September and November 20 13, were

:08:44. > :08:49.unemployed in the capital, down by 18,000 on the previous quarter.

:08:50. > :08:59.There is still uncertainty in the retail sector, however. Tim Donovan

:09:00. > :09:04.reports. It was to Heathrow's nearly refurbished second terminal that the

:09:05. > :09:12.minister came today. It was the ideal place to mark today's positive

:09:13. > :09:16.jobs figures. We have got to get the economy buoyant, we have got to get

:09:17. > :09:20.more people into jobs. It is about life fulfilment, security,

:09:21. > :09:25.supporting the family and the local community. These two are just about

:09:26. > :09:27.to complete their four year apprenticeship in maintenance

:09:28. > :09:32.engineering at the airport. What chance a job here and now? It is an

:09:33. > :09:38.internal application, and they tried to fit us in. Lots of jobs around

:09:39. > :09:43.the airport. Can you foresee that you will end up with a career here?

:09:44. > :09:49.Definitely. There are already jobs being lined up for us at the moment.

:09:50. > :09:53.Over the last year, unemployment has come down by Northpoint 2% in

:09:54. > :10:02.London, the lowest improvement rate in the country. The jobless rate is

:10:03. > :10:04.above the national average. `` 0.2%. It is still well above the

:10:05. > :10:09.unemployment rate from before the crash. It seems that construction

:10:10. > :10:14.and services are healthier than some other sectors. Professional

:10:15. > :10:18.services, business services, the IT sector, are doing particularly well,

:10:19. > :10:23.in terms of growth employment, we are still seeing concern amongst

:10:24. > :10:31.retailers, hospitality, tourism and leisure. In Hayes, just down the

:10:32. > :10:36.road, there has been sluggish growth on the high street. But there is

:10:37. > :10:39.optimism for the future. We have got a new supermarket opening, we have

:10:40. > :10:44.got an international IT company which is making its headquarters

:10:45. > :10:51.here. And we are going to be redeveloping the old VM eyesight,

:10:52. > :10:55.creating 4000 jobs. Such optimism may not be shared across London. But

:10:56. > :11:02.many are now looking for a sustained improvement in the jobs market in

:11:03. > :11:05.the capital. Two men have been charged with supplying drugs

:11:06. > :11:10.following the death of a 16`year`old boy from Croydon. Daniel

:11:11. > :11:13.Spargo`Mabbs died in hospital on Monday after apparently taking

:11:14. > :11:19.ecstasy at a party in London at the weekend. 18`year`old

:11:20. > :11:23.Nicqueel?Pitrora and 20`year`old Ryan Kirk were due to appear before

:11:24. > :11:27.magistrates today. Speaking to Vanessa Feltz on the radio,

:11:28. > :11:31.Daniel's father had business edge for anyone tempted to take an

:11:32. > :11:37.illegal drug. We want to say to any child out there, tempted to take any

:11:38. > :11:43.illegal drug, talk to us first, we will tell you about the machines,

:11:44. > :11:51.the hospital, the ventilator, the whole shebang. The policeman who

:11:52. > :11:55.arrested a man wielding a samurai sword. He said he was just doing his

:11:56. > :12:07.job. But one year on, leave Brown has been awarded for his bravery.

:12:08. > :12:13.He has been voted the bravest officer on the force. Just over a

:12:14. > :12:17.year ago, was in a much more uncomfortable position. On Christmas

:12:18. > :12:22.Eve, a man had randomly stabbed a young woman with a samurai sword.

:12:23. > :12:29.The sergeant chased him and found himself facing the weapon. He pulled

:12:30. > :12:36.a sword and started swinging at me. After a bit of to and fro in, I

:12:37. > :12:44.eventually apprehended him. A bag of swords and knives and a crossbow was

:12:45. > :12:49.found on the man, who will spend the rest of his life in a secure mental

:12:50. > :12:53.unit. There is an element of risk, you know that when you it is better

:12:54. > :12:57.that I put my life on the line, rather than a member of the public,

:12:58. > :13:04.because it is my job to do that. More than 6000 members of the public

:13:05. > :13:08.voted for Seve. They hit him three times on the arm, which made him

:13:09. > :13:14.drop his sword... His colleagues agree he is more than deserving. He

:13:15. > :13:19.arrested an individual who was intent he had tried to kill someone,

:13:20. > :13:22.and then he tried to kill but police officer. The fact that Steve did not

:13:23. > :13:28.back off and arrested the individual, it is an outstanding

:13:29. > :13:30.achievement. Metropolitan Police has received some negative press

:13:31. > :13:35.recently, but today, there was a positive message, to recognise those

:13:36. > :13:42.that put themselves at risk to protect the public every day.

:13:43. > :13:53.Still to come this evening... Join me for a view of the largest solar

:13:54. > :13:55.panel bridge in the world. And Tom Daley tells us why it's great to be

:13:56. > :14:10.living and training in London. With the recent success of actors

:14:11. > :14:16.like Naomi Harris and director Steve McQueen, it may seem like diversity

:14:17. > :14:23.in the creative industries is improving. But according to a recent

:14:24. > :14:35.survey, it is not the case. Brenda Emmanus reports.

:14:36. > :14:43.Degree students at the mettle film school based at Ealing Studios,

:14:44. > :14:50.developing their skills, Pope of a successful career in the film

:14:51. > :14:56.industry. If you work hard enough, people will realise, and they will

:14:57. > :15:00.see potential. You would expect to be doing amazing things next year,

:15:01. > :15:03.but I am doing what I love, and hopefully I will get the break. They

:15:04. > :15:09.may be fuelled with optimism, but the realities of the industry are

:15:10. > :15:15.yet according to the latest census, the creative industries are becoming

:15:16. > :15:18.less diverse. The first survey, in 2003, only included figures for film

:15:19. > :15:23.and television, but revealed that the percentage of ethnic minorities

:15:24. > :15:28.working in the industry was 7.4%. The latest figure was only 5.4%.

:15:29. > :15:34.That included a wider section of the creative industries. There are all

:15:35. > :15:38.sorts of reasons why UCD 's numbers. The industry is much more freelance

:15:39. > :15:44.than it was five or ten years ago. `` why you see these numbers. Some

:15:45. > :15:49.people have given up and gone off to do other things. The culture

:15:50. > :15:52.minister today had a meeting here in Westminster with leaders in the

:15:53. > :15:56.creative industry to understand the problem and build a consensus about

:15:57. > :15:57.what needs to be done and to generate industry commitment to

:15:58. > :16:10.action. 12 years of slaves sees

:16:11. > :16:18.Oscar`nominated and is for Steve McQueen `` 12 Years A Slave. There

:16:19. > :16:23.is grounds for hope but a strong desire for more. It has to change.

:16:24. > :16:29.If they wanted to get better, it is all`inclusive. You have a British

:16:30. > :16:33.actor up for an Oscar, a black British actor up for an Oscar, but

:16:34. > :16:38.it is very funny that all of a sudden, when you do hit America and

:16:39. > :16:43.do very well, you do very well here. But it doesn't seem to happen the

:16:44. > :16:48.other way round! If the talks today are the beginning of radical change,

:16:49. > :16:51.then the optimism for all these students may be justified.

:16:52. > :16:55.They're a world first, but most people won't get to see them. 4,500

:16:56. > :17:02.solar panels have been installed on the roof of Blackfriars Station

:17:03. > :17:08.which spans the Thames. As Alice Bhandhukravi reports, it's part of a

:17:09. > :17:12.multi`million pound refurbishment. It has always been unique in being

:17:13. > :17:17.the only station which crosses the Thames, but now Blackfriars can

:17:18. > :17:22.boast another special feature, its solar roof. Almost 4500 solar panels

:17:23. > :17:26.spanning the length of the bridge. It is part of a major upgrade which

:17:27. > :17:33.has seen it going from a dingy Victorian station to an airy modern

:17:34. > :17:36.hub. Only 10% of the energy needs are being generated by the solar

:17:37. > :17:41.panel roof, but in the height of summer, it could be as much as 50%.

:17:42. > :17:46.It may looks patience but it is also very busy. Almost 40,000 passengers

:17:47. > :17:50.use Blackfriars every day. Although they have already been through the

:17:51. > :17:55.worst in terms of construction work and delays, there is more to come.

:17:56. > :17:58.London Bridge will soon be closed as part of the Thames Link programme to

:17:59. > :18:02.improve the route and allow for longer trains and that will put

:18:03. > :18:08.pressure on passengers at Blackfriars. But first at macro

:18:09. > :18:12.capital Connect insists it is part of the pain. If we carried on the

:18:13. > :18:16.way we were with the same stations and the same trains we would not

:18:17. > :18:21.have been able to increase capacity, we would have extremely

:18:22. > :18:25.overcrowded trains. This had to be a project to increase capacity across

:18:26. > :18:30.the whole route and it will benefit customers significantly when it is

:18:31. > :18:34.completed. As for the solar panels, they will eventually pay for it

:18:35. > :18:37.themselves through energy savings, albeit over 15 years.

:18:38. > :18:40.Next, she's an actress, a fashion designer, and now Sadie Frost is

:18:41. > :18:44.turning acrobat ` with a special performance tonight at the

:18:45. > :18:45.Roundhouse in Camden. The show, Fuertzabruta, which features

:18:46. > :18:49.high`flying circus stunts, made headlines a few days ago, after part

:18:50. > :18:53.of the set collapsed ,injuring four people in the audience. This report

:18:54. > :19:04.from Emilia Papadopoulos contains some flashing images.

:19:05. > :19:11.Aerial acrobatics and 80 minutes of mad stunts, just inches from the

:19:12. > :19:19.audience. The Argentinian show is full on in there since Theatre.

:19:20. > :19:25.Tonight they welcome an unlikely star, the actress Sadie Frost. I

:19:26. > :19:29.said I would like to appear as a joke but they said they could make

:19:30. > :19:37.it happen. The first time in the rehearsal I thought, what have I

:19:38. > :19:41.signed myself up for. Fuertzabruta translates as root force. Things

:19:42. > :19:48.went wrong a few days ago when part of the set collapsed on spectators

:19:49. > :19:52.below. That has not put Sadie off. Unfortunately, these things happen.

:19:53. > :19:56.Technical things can go wrong. In the history of this show nothing has

:19:57. > :20:01.gone wrong and they are very vigilant on health and is a the end

:20:02. > :20:05.all that kind of stuff. The show relies heavily on teamwork and trust

:20:06. > :20:10.and that has meant intense rehearsals for the last few weeks.

:20:11. > :20:14.But for Sadie, it is worth it and performing at the Roundhouse in

:20:15. > :20:20.Camden holds sentimental value. I grew up in this area. I feel

:20:21. > :20:25.connected to it. I used to come here to community ventures when my father

:20:26. > :20:29.worked here in the 70s. You may not be lucky enough to see Sadie in

:20:30. > :20:33.action because tonight's show was all sold out but Fuertzabruta is on

:20:34. > :20:36.until March. Manchester United have made a bid in

:20:37. > :20:40.the region of ?35 million for the Chelsea midfielder Juan Mata. It's

:20:41. > :20:43.thought the offer is likely to be rejected, with Chelsea holding out

:20:44. > :20:46.for more money before the January transfer window ends next week.

:20:47. > :20:49.Significantly Mata, who is not injured, did not train with Jose

:20:50. > :20:59.Mourinho's first team squad this morning.

:21:00. > :21:02.Olympic diver Tom Daley says he has been "overwhelmed" by the support

:21:03. > :21:06.shown since announcing he is in a gay relationship. He was speaking as

:21:07. > :21:10.he took part in his first training session at the Aquatics Centre in

:21:11. > :21:14.Stratford, his new base ahead of the Rio Games in 2016. The BBC's Olympic

:21:15. > :21:23.sports reporter, Nick Hope, has been to meet him.

:21:24. > :21:27.London will always hold a special place in Tom Daley's heart. 18

:21:28. > :21:32.months ago he dived to Olympic bronze here but now he is back.

:21:33. > :21:36.Leaving his birthplace of Plymouth for full`time life in the capital. I

:21:37. > :21:41.decided to spread my wings a little bit and move to the big city, moved

:21:42. > :21:44.to London. I think every athlete wants to try new things and

:21:45. > :21:49.experiment with new ideas and I think keeping it fresh, it has given

:21:50. > :21:56.me a massive motivation boost as well. Daily has made headlines since

:21:57. > :22:05.winning World Championships gold in `` at the age of 15. And his ITV

:22:06. > :22:08.Splash programme has also given him attention but he has also released

:22:09. > :22:16.an online video revealing he is in a relationship with a gay man. Is it a

:22:17. > :22:21.big deal? I do not think so. He has been pleased with the response since

:22:22. > :22:24.then. The response from the media and the public has been

:22:25. > :22:28.overwhelming. I could not be happier here training with Jane in the new
