:00:00. > :00:13.extended interview with her. But now on BBC One, it's time for the

:00:14. > :00:24.Good evening. One of London's most notorious gangs has been targeted in

:00:25. > :00:30.a series of nationwide raids from Lambeth to Edinburgh. The GAS gang

:00:31. > :00:35.is believed to be responsible for up to three quarters of all violent

:00:36. > :00:40.crime in parts of south London. This morning's operation was aimed at

:00:41. > :00:45.what was described as senior, high ranking members. It led to almost 30

:00:46. > :00:50.arrests. She became the innocent face of London's struggle with

:00:51. > :00:55.violent gang crime. One moment she was dancing in her

:00:56. > :01:08.uncle's shop and next sprawled on the floor, shot in the chest in a

:01:09. > :01:10.botched gang shooting. A member of the notorious GAS gang pulled the

:01:11. > :01:12.trigger. Today the Metropolitan police swooped on its senior ranks.

:01:13. > :01:18.The so`called untouchables of this gang received an unexpected early

:01:19. > :01:24.morning visit. At 5:30am 700 police officers descended on addresses

:01:25. > :01:29.around the UK. They raided homes in Scotland, Bedfordshire, Essex and

:01:30. > :01:34.the Thames Valley, but the heart of the gang operated out of south

:01:35. > :01:40.London. Nine properties were raided in Brixton and 29 people arrested.

:01:41. > :01:43.The gang is suspected of drug dealing, money`laundering,

:01:44. > :01:52.immigration offences and serious violence. Some members are serving

:01:53. > :01:56.sentences for murder and serious violence and crime. We have seen

:01:57. > :02:00.significant reductions in all of those offences in London, but this

:02:01. > :02:06.gang continues to cause harm in London. The actions and the people

:02:07. > :02:13.we have taken out today are senior members. The Met has been criticised

:02:14. > :02:25.of only targeting the foot shoulders of gangs. Daschle foot soldiers. In

:02:26. > :02:29.the past individuals have complained about gang related individuals being

:02:30. > :02:35.arrested and the next day they are on the streets. It is very important

:02:36. > :02:40.the right individuals are arrested and put behind bars. Members of the

:02:41. > :02:46.gang have been convicted of a series of murders, including this boy

:02:47. > :02:54.hunted and stabbed by what the piece called was a pack of animals. One

:02:55. > :03:00.former high`level gang members says the police can only do so much.

:03:01. > :03:06.There will be always youngsters who are willing to step in their shoes

:03:07. > :03:09.as quick as possible, so it will never be eradicated. This gang

:03:10. > :03:17.culture thing has to be eradicated. I take my hat off to them. The

:03:18. > :03:21.Met's operation Trident be launched as a gang initiative admits there is

:03:22. > :03:25.more to do. Investigators say a father and

:03:26. > :03:29.daughter from Wandsworth who were killed in a speedboat accident in

:03:30. > :03:35.Cornwall died after he took the controls from his wife, but the

:03:36. > :03:38.Marine Accident Investigation Branch said Nick Milligan's wife Victoria

:03:39. > :03:44.should have been wearing a safety device which would have cut the

:03:45. > :03:48.engine. This was the moment the Milligan family boat was left

:03:49. > :03:53.spinning out of control. It was at Padstow in Cornwall in May last year

:03:54. > :03:58.when they were enjoying a day by the sea. All six members of the family

:03:59. > :04:04.were thrown into the water. Nick and eight`year`old Emily were killed

:04:05. > :04:07.when the vessel run over them. Mamma Victoria and her four`year`old

:04:08. > :04:12.daughter suffered serious injuries and the two older daughters minor

:04:13. > :04:18.ones. The official report concluded that Nick Milligan had let his wife

:04:19. > :04:24.take control of the boat and it powered off away from the beach. The

:04:25. > :04:29.kill cord which should have stopped the engine was not worn and the boat

:04:30. > :04:39.continued to circle over the family resulting in the tragic death of two

:04:40. > :04:45.of them. Kill cords are standard issue in smaller, ' designed to be

:04:46. > :04:51.standard and quick. This is the kind of the boat the family were in, a

:04:52. > :04:55.vessel capable of doing 40 knots. Each time the boat goes out the

:04:56. > :05:01.skipper should be attached to kill cord, so if she is put out of

:05:02. > :05:07.action, this is what happens. The engine is cut. Not everyone supports

:05:08. > :05:12.them to make compulsory. We believe that making sure people are aware of

:05:13. > :05:18.the hazards and better promoting the use of kill cords is the way

:05:19. > :05:21.forward. Today the family released a statement saying, we are still

:05:22. > :05:28.coming to terms with this tragic accident which has left us without

:05:29. > :05:33.Nick, a loving husband, father and son and brother and Emily whose life

:05:34. > :05:36.was only just beginning. We hope the winners of this accident means that

:05:37. > :05:42.any other family do not have to go through anything similar. Today's

:05:43. > :05:49.report says kill cords should become second nature when taking the helm

:05:50. > :05:53.of powerboats. All lorries in London could be forced to have safety

:05:54. > :05:59.equipment installed by the end of this year to protect cyclists and

:06:00. > :06:03.pedestrians. The proposal will ensure every HGV is fitted with side

:06:04. > :06:08.guards to protect cyclists from being dragged under the wheels.

:06:09. > :06:12.Lorries could also have special mirrors to give drivers a better

:06:13. > :06:17.view of the road. It has got to be one of the most unusual places to

:06:18. > :06:22.grow herbs and vegetables, but a small farm has been set up

:06:23. > :06:30.underground, below Clapham in an old World War II tunnel and it has taken

:06:31. > :06:32.two years to get the environment just right. The produce will be sold

:06:33. > :06:45.across shops in London. Today the statistics confirmed what

:06:46. > :06:49.we already knew. January has been a very wet month in deeds and across

:06:50. > :06:55.London and the South East we have seen twice the average that we see

:06:56. > :07:01.in January. Tonight there are a few showers towards the south and east.

:07:02. > :07:05.We will see a few mist patches develop and temperatures drop below

:07:06. > :07:12.freezing in rural areas. Tomorrow morning many places will stay dry.

:07:13. > :07:16.The breeze suddenly picks up. The rain is going to push in through the

:07:17. > :07:23.evening rush hour and it is a wet and windy end to the working week.

:07:24. > :07:28.That is it for tonight. We are back from 6:30am tomorrow morning on BBC

:07:29. > :07:42.One and on the news channel. Have a very good night.

:07:43. > :07:43.Good evening. As we have seen, it has been an exceptionally wet
