:00:00. > 3:59:59California at the of 85. That is all from us. There is a

:00:00. > :00:17.first look at Good evening. The planned 48`hour

:00:18. > :00:19.Tube strike which was due to have started tonight was called off after

:00:20. > :00:23.a last`minute deal was agreed between union officials and

:00:24. > :00:27.Transport for London. The dispute was over the closure of ticket

:00:28. > :00:35.offices and job losses. Our transport correspondent Tom Edwards

:00:36. > :00:40.reports. This morning, the strike was on

:00:41. > :00:48.This afternoon, it was off, welcome news for commuters. That is really

:00:49. > :00:54.good news. The unions have to sit together. They need to open their

:00:55. > :01:01.communication levels a bit more because they cannot hold the country

:01:02. > :01:05.to ransom, yes, the unions. Last week the strike caused huge

:01:06. > :01:12.disruption. Transport unions walked out our proposals to close all to

:01:13. > :01:17.get offices and cut 950 jobs. London Underground said ticket offices were

:01:18. > :01:22.only used in 3% of journeys. This morning a new deal was put forward.

:01:23. > :01:26.A station review means busier ticket offices could be kept open and a

:01:27. > :01:33.trawl for voluntary redundancies has been suspended. That was enough to

:01:34. > :01:40.call off the strike. Do you regret taking at the strike? Was that an

:01:41. > :01:44.overreaction? No, because they were not taking seriously until we called

:01:45. > :01:50.strike action and we got more done over a of time when the strike

:01:51. > :01:55.action took place and it concentrated their minds. I want to

:01:56. > :01:59.look at every individual station and look at specific issues that may

:02:00. > :02:05.emerge and as we do that we will respond accordingly to what puzzles

:02:06. > :02:09.are put forward. You need to have that level of detailed dialogue and

:02:10. > :02:14.I am pleased we have got time and space to do that. The Mayor visiting

:02:15. > :02:20.Croydon said the modernisation of the Tube is still essential. There

:02:21. > :02:26.will be a detailed negotiation, but I think a programme that is

:02:27. > :02:29.fantastic for Tube, it offers up huge opportunities to modernise the

:02:30. > :02:36.system and it will be good for London Underground staff as well. It

:02:37. > :02:40.will not be the last we hear of this modernisation plan. There will

:02:41. > :02:43.probably be other serious disagreements and many staff have

:02:44. > :02:47.concerns about what the future holds. But tonight at least good

:02:48. > :02:49.news for commuters. So, hundreds of people were evacuated from their

:02:50. > :02:52.homes along the Thames, thousands more are at risk from rising water

:02:53. > :02:56.levels and tonight hundreds of residents in Datchet were left

:02:57. > :03:02.without power. Let's get more from Nick Beake who is down river in

:03:03. > :03:13.Chertsey. What is the latest? Around 7000

:03:14. > :03:18.people `` 1700, were left without power this evening. The latest we

:03:19. > :03:23.are hearing is that some of it has been restored, but Sun faced the

:03:24. > :03:28.bleak prospect of being without electricity overnight. This is

:03:29. > :03:32.Chertsey Fire Station. There are search and rescue teams, the

:03:33. > :03:37.ambulance, and the military are playing a significant role. Some of

:03:38. > :03:42.the soldiers from the Royal artillery were fighting the Taliban

:03:43. > :03:46.in Afghanistan two months ago. Today they are fighting the ever

:03:47. > :03:50.encroaching water in Surrey. Meanwhile, my colleague Gareth Furby

:03:51. > :03:56.has been taking a look at what has been happening in Berkshire. We are

:03:57. > :03:59.on a journey into the heart of the floods after dark.

:04:00. > :04:05.And we are here to find people who do not want to leave their homes.

:04:06. > :04:12.They are willing to stay put in a house that is flooded, cold and

:04:13. > :04:17.could lose power at any moment. Ian Elliot invited us in. He built this

:04:18. > :04:23.house and even though the water was inside and rising, he was not going

:04:24. > :04:29.anywhere. We lost our heating, but fortunately I have got a log burner.

:04:30. > :04:35.You stay in your home as long as you can. We will take it day by day we

:04:36. > :04:40.are happy here. Across the road we found Derek who has even more reason

:04:41. > :04:47.to cherish his home. He shared it with his wife Kay who died from

:04:48. > :04:51.breast cancer six years ago. It is desperate. When the house is fine

:04:52. > :04:57.and the weather is fine, there is nowhere else my set. In sunlight

:04:58. > :05:03.there was some beauty in this flooded village, but later we found

:05:04. > :05:08.another emotion, fear. This was a patrol, volunteers worried about

:05:09. > :05:13.possible looting. We are approaching people we do not know because it is

:05:14. > :05:19.now getting dark. A lot of houses are empty and there is the

:05:20. > :05:26.possibility of people breaking in. We will take all night long. There

:05:27. > :05:32.were stories as well in the morning of people marooned in their homes.

:05:33. > :05:37.But the volunteers rallying in the primary school were determined to

:05:38. > :05:42.help. We joined Mark Jones and Sam as they were called to a family

:05:43. > :05:53.trying to arrange evacuation for a woman in her 70s. She is about 1

:05:54. > :05:59.years old, she has got mobility restrictions. If you need us to pick

:06:00. > :06:03.up medication, we can do that. But the job of evacuation was too big

:06:04. > :06:10.for the volunteers and she was staying put for now. The family say

:06:11. > :06:13.they will call 999 if she deteriorates. The volunteers say

:06:14. > :06:22.they will continue to work 24 hours a day. Today these have been the

:06:23. > :06:26.best two methods of transport for getting around. I spoke to the top

:06:27. > :06:32.officer in Surrey and he said the extra levels of staffing would apply

:06:33. > :06:36.for possibly the next ten days. That gives you an indication of how the

:06:37. > :06:42.water and the misery is simply not going underway.

:06:43. > :06:43.A full national forecast follows after a detailed look at the weather

:06:44. > :06:59.in and around London. It is not good news at all. Many

:07:00. > :07:05.places will see 15 millimetres more of rain by Saturday. We have got

:07:06. > :07:11.very strong winds in the forecast tomorrow afternoon, possibly gusting

:07:12. > :07:16.up to 50 or 60 miles an hour. We have got two mornings tomorrow, one

:07:17. > :07:21.for the wind and one for the rain. Tonight there will be a few stray

:07:22. > :07:26.showers. In the morning milder air pushes in from the west along with

:07:27. > :07:32.further showers. That will lead to heavy rain by tomorrow afternoon.

:07:33. > :07:40.That is when the wind is going to pick up. Thursday looks like a

:07:41. > :07:44.quieter day. Good evening, a roller-coaster ride

:07:45. > :07:49.of weather continues across the British Isles. We want to get off,

:07:50. > :07:54.but unfortunately we have got more white knuckle rides to come. This

:07:55. > :08:01.area of low pressure is bringing wet and extremely windy weather. It

:08:02. > :08:05.happens again on Friday with another deep low moving in from the

:08:06. > :08:10.south-west. That means that potentially over the next five days

:08:11. > :08:17.we could see as much a 60 - 80 millimetres of rainfall, among's

:08:18. > :08:22.worth in just five days. Before that there are lots of tricky conditions

:08:23. > :08:26.out there at the moment. We have got snow across Scotland and Northern

:08:27. > :08:32.Ireland. As these showers pushed further inland and temperatures fall

:08:33. > :08:36.away, we could see snow at lower levels as well. It is a similar

:08:37. > :08:41.story for South Yorkshire and into Derbyshire and perhaps the Midlands.

:08:42. > :08:47.Even if we do not get the snow, and we keep the showers, it will be a

:08:48. > :08:52.cold night, so that could lead to icy stretches on the roads. That

:08:53. > :08:57.will pale into insignificance because the wind is already picking

:08:58. > :09:02.up and an intense band of rain continues to push in across the

:09:03. > :09:08.country. This time it will be a bit more prolonged for tomorrow. The

:09:09. > :09:15.wins either significant feature There is an amber warning for the

:09:16. > :09:19.gusts of wind. Let's look at the afternoon. In the Northern Isles and

:09:20. > :09:26.the far north of Scotland it is quite quiet. Snow continues across

:09:27. > :09:31.the mountains and sharp showers in northern Ireland and northern

:09:32. > :09:37.England. The winds pick up into the North West and the South of Wales.

:09:38. > :09:42.The band of rain is still clinging on to East Anglia and the Essex and

:09:43. > :09:49.Kent coasts. Blizzard conditions are possible overnight in Scotland and

:09:50. > :09:55.on the higher ground. By Thursday things potentially get a little

:09:56. > :09:59.quieter. There will be some showers around, but wet and windy weather

:10:00. > :10:01.set to return as we move towards Friday.
