:00:00. > :00:12.last the full version of that interview with Paul Flowers,

:00:13. > :00:18.Good evening from BBC London News. New figures reveal an east`west

:00:19. > :00:24.divide in how satisfied Londoners are with the Metropolitan Police.

:00:25. > :00:32.The annual crime survey shows a small boost in the public's trust in

:00:33. > :00:35.the force. But says people's faith in The Met varies greatly from

:00:36. > :00:39.borough to borough. Our Polhtical Editor, Tim Donovan has the details.

:00:40. > :00:41.It can take an age to build up, just a moment to shatter. The latest

:00:42. > :00:46.crime survey figures show confidence in The Met is improving if only by

:00:47. > :00:51.less than 1% in a year. At least it's not getting worse. 24 out of 32

:00:52. > :00:57.boroughs, three quarters of them have seen an improvement in public

:00:58. > :01:01.confidence versus a year ago. That is a good starting point, btt not

:01:02. > :01:04.enough to hit our target. The talk today was of an east`west dhvide,

:01:05. > :01:10.the deputy mayor said poverty didn't appear to be a major factor, but one

:01:11. > :01:12.academic said it was. There is a very strong sensation deprivation

:01:13. > :01:20.and contrast in confidence hn the police. So what are the varhations?

:01:21. > :01:23.Confidence is good where it is red and less where it is grey. What are

:01:24. > :01:27.the extremes? In Richmond, 84% of people say the police do a good or

:01:28. > :01:32.excellent job. While in Lewhsham, it's 48%, dropping 13% in a year. In

:01:33. > :01:34.the last few months there h`s been unfortunate publicity about

:01:35. > :01:38.Lewisham, named the least pdaceful borough in a survey and the place

:01:39. > :01:46.where a child was most likely to be Tasered. Was this a fair impression?

:01:47. > :01:49.If I needed to call the polhce, I wouldn't. I'd call someone dlse to

:01:50. > :01:52.deal with the problem. I don't trust them. Some can't thank the police in

:01:53. > :01:58.love and some have nothing good to say about them. So bit of a ying and

:01:59. > :02:02.yang. We don't see any police walking round in Lewisham. So that's

:02:03. > :02:05.probably why there is a lot of petty crime. In fact, most crime hn

:02:06. > :02:11.Lewisham is down and the officer in charge offered this today. H know

:02:12. > :02:15.this isn't about satisfaction but where people have actually `ccessed

:02:16. > :02:17.a service we are at 78%, so that's a better picture. It's just the

:02:18. > :02:22.confidence that's really dr`gging the overall performance scorecard

:02:23. > :02:28.down. City Hall says The Met is not yet on track to get a 75% ptblic

:02:29. > :02:36.approval rating by 2020. But the police know building trust hs one of

:02:37. > :02:40.the key things they need to do. Well it comes on the day thd head of

:02:41. > :02:42.the force, Sir Bernard Hogan Howe, was questioned by MPs over the

:02:43. > :02:52.shredding of thousands of documents a decade ago. Nick Beake is outside

:02:53. > :02:58.Scotland Yard, what did he say? They were very frosty, those exchanges.

:02:59. > :03:04.But in the middle of them, Sir Bernard Hogan`Howe said he had and

:03:05. > :03:08.all members of his organisation from shredding documents. It follows the

:03:09. > :03:13.revelation that a lorry load of evidence in an anti`corrupthon probe

:03:14. > :03:19.was destroyed more than a ddcade ago. Today, he said he was still

:03:20. > :03:22.trying to establish whether that have been done for malicious or

:03:23. > :03:26.innocent purposes. He said the shredding was hard to justify but he

:03:27. > :03:33.said it was possible it was done because the information had been

:03:34. > :03:36.safely transferred to computers The Commissioner was specifically

:03:37. > :03:43.questioned over alleged corruption in the Stephen Lawrence casd? Yes, a

:03:44. > :03:47.barrister had been asked to look again at the Stephen Lawrence

:03:48. > :03:57.investigation. He said therd were reasonable grounds to suspect a

:03:58. > :04:03.former police officer, Sergdant John Davidson of corruption. Thex say it

:04:04. > :04:06.should be done by an extern`l organisation.

:04:07. > :04:08.And in a special programme later this week, The Met Commissioner

:04:09. > :04:13.talks directly to an audience of Londoners about recent scandals in

:04:14. > :04:17.the Force. That's 'Do You Trust the Police?' with Jeremy Vine, on Friday

:04:18. > :04:21.at 7:30pm. The family of a young soldidr who

:04:22. > :04:24.died at Deepcut barracks in Surrey, nearly 20 years ago, has bedn told

:04:25. > :04:37.they can apply to the High Court for a new inquest. Private Cherxl James

:04:38. > :04:40.died from gunshot wounds. She was one of four soldiers there to die

:04:41. > :04:46.over seven years, sparking allegations of bullying and abuse as

:04:47. > :04:51.Alex Bushill reports. Private Cheryl James was 18 when she

:04:52. > :04:55.died from a single gunshot wound to her head. Her body was found on the

:04:56. > :04:59.outskirts of the barracks in the Surrey countryside. She is

:05:00. > :05:03.remembered as a bubbly teen`ger and the army said her death was

:05:04. > :05:08.suicide. Her family have never accepted that, accusing the MoD over

:05:09. > :05:15.cover`up. And now some promhsing news, a second inquest into her

:05:16. > :05:20.death. We were always confident this day would come. The more we learned

:05:21. > :05:27.about Cheryl's case and her death, the more we knew it had not been

:05:28. > :05:30.investigated. His daughter was one of four young recruits who died of

:05:31. > :05:41.gunshot wounds within four xears at deep cut. Cheryl James was found

:05:42. > :05:44.dead, an open verdict was rdcorded. In 2001, Private Geoff Gray from

:05:45. > :05:51.Hackney was found dead with two gunshot wounds. And a year later

:05:52. > :05:57.Private James Collins and's body was discovered and both returned open

:05:58. > :06:00.verdicts. Surrey Police carried out an investigation into thous`nd and

:06:01. > :06:03.two but there have never bedn any prosecutions. A series of

:06:04. > :06:07.investigations found bullying and abuse but calls for a full public

:06:08. > :06:13.enquiry have been refused. The authorities have persistently shut

:06:14. > :06:17.the families down and tried to close ranks. I think that aware the

:06:18. > :06:23.families have looked to othdr institutions to help them, such as

:06:24. > :06:27.the police, they have failed them. The army has said it has le`rned

:06:28. > :06:30.lessons from what happened `t deep cut and the MoD said they would

:06:31. > :06:37.provide support for any second inquest. Private James' famhly now

:06:38. > :06:40.await a six`week wait to sed if the High Court will grant them ` second

:06:41. > :06:44.inquest. That's all from me, so I'll wish you

:06:45. > :06:49.goodnight and leave you with the weather.

:06:50. > :06:56.We have clear skies but the sunshine will be replaced by showers in the

:06:57. > :06:59.afternoon. We could see a couple creeping across Kent, Essex and

:07:00. > :07:05.Hertfordshire in the next fdw hours but mostly it will be a dry night. A

:07:06. > :07:11.breeze blowing and it will be chilly. Sheltered from the spots may

:07:12. > :07:16.maybe below freezing. There could be a touch of ice first thing tomorrow

:07:17. > :07:23.morning. It will not be a whdespread trouble. For most it will bd a dry

:07:24. > :07:26.start, a little bit of brightness around but the showers get going in

:07:27. > :07:31.the afternoon. They look like they will be heavy and thundery `nd they

:07:32. > :07:32.might be wintry. Feeling chhlly at 10 degrees. The outlook,

:07:33. > :07:36.might be wintry. Feeling chilly at 10 degrees. The outlook, it stays

:07:37. > :07:41.chilly and temperatures look like they will pick up towards the eight

:07:42. > :07:45.-- weekend. In early spring, a bit of sunshine

:07:46. > :07:50.makes the difference. Today we had some sunshine in the far east of the

:07:51. > :07:54.UK and in the far west. In Northern Ireland and East Anglia,

:07:55. > :07:59.temperatures climbed into the teens. But for most of us, it was gloomy

:08:00. > :08:03.and temperatures were at sixes and sevens. Single figure temperatures

:08:04. > :08:08.will feature heavily over the next few days. We are already seeing the

:08:09. > :08:12.weather coming in from the east pushing the weather to the West so

:08:13. > :08:18.we will see showers continuing in the night. Isolated showers. Most

:08:19. > :08:23.towns and cities just about avoiding a frost but in rural areas we will

:08:24. > :08:28.seek pockets of frost and fog patches for the morning. Some

:08:29. > :08:33.showers across the West but it will brighten up in the West, however in

:08:34. > :08:34.the East the cloud thickens, the winds pick up and out rakes
