:00:00. > :00:12.in a moment with analysis of that debate between Nick Clegg and Nigel
:00:13. > :00:17.Good evening. Prince Charles has given his opinion on solving
:00:18. > :00:19.London's housing problem. He believes architects should look at
:00:20. > :00:23.using mansion blocks more effectively ` as well as building
:00:24. > :00:28.more squares as they did in Georgian and Victorian times. But the Mayor
:00:29. > :00:32.has responded by saying it's crazy to write off the idea of having more
:00:33. > :00:36.high`rise buildings. Alex Bushill reports.
:00:37. > :00:41.Tower block versus terrace. Modernists versus traditionalists.
:00:42. > :00:44.The Mayor versus the Prince. The Prince of Wales today outlined his
:00:45. > :00:47.vision of a London based on the beauty of the Maida Vale mansion
:00:48. > :00:51.block and the terraces of Notting Hill. I'm greatly encouraged by the
:00:52. > :00:54.report's central recommendation that we should consider mid`rise as one
:00:55. > :01:00.of the key solutions to London's necessary expansion. He was
:01:01. > :01:05.launching a Prince's Foundation housing report. With 36,000 new
:01:06. > :01:08.households expected each year and only 24,000 being built, there will
:01:09. > :01:14.be a shortfall of nearly 600,000 by 2022. His solution ` more mid`sized
:01:15. > :01:20.housing, around five storeys, along transport corridors, especially in
:01:21. > :01:25.the suburbs. And more infill building, typically where bombs once
:01:26. > :01:30.fell. The report also criticises much of high`rise living as a sink
:01:31. > :01:32.estates in the sky. Not fair, says this award`winning architect. He
:01:33. > :01:36.lives with his family at the Barbican's towers. High`rise living
:01:37. > :01:39.gives you the ability to access things like sunlight, daylight,
:01:40. > :01:41.ventilation, all of the things that are quite problematic when you're
:01:42. > :01:46.naturally trying to deliver infill housing in some of the inner`city
:01:47. > :01:49.boroughs of London. For others, there is a bigger question ` how to
:01:50. > :01:53.provide affordable housing on increasingly unaffordable land.
:01:54. > :01:57.Everybody understands that we have to densify the city. The problem is
:01:58. > :02:00.how to do that when land is so terribly expensive. Although the
:02:01. > :02:05.report does talk about the price of land in London, it doesn't seem to
:02:06. > :02:10.offer any solutions. And tonight the mayor weighed in. Everybody in an
:02:11. > :02:14.ideal world would like to see just loads of London terraced streets and
:02:15. > :02:16.squares and so on. But it is possible, on many sites, to build
:02:17. > :02:23.good, sensible, affordable high`rise accommodation. Beautiful homes where
:02:24. > :02:28.there's good transport links. It's absolutely crazy to rule out
:02:29. > :02:32.high`rise in those cases. Regardless of which is best ` steel and glass,
:02:33. > :02:35.bricks and mortar ` the fact that the Mayor and the Prince have so
:02:36. > :02:43.publicly disagreed shows just how hard it is to build any consensus,
:02:44. > :02:46.let alone enough homes for London. The brother of one of the men who
:02:47. > :02:50.killed Lee Rigby in Woolwich last year says his sibling feels sorry
:02:51. > :02:56.for the dead soldier's sun ` but doesn't regret the murder. Michael
:02:57. > :02:59.Adebolajo's brother Jeremiah was speaking to the BBC, as our home
:03:00. > :03:01.affairs correspondent Guy Smith reports.
:03:02. > :03:05.The judge described the murder of Lee Rigby as barbaric. He said the
:03:06. > :03:08.two British Muslim converts killed the 25`year`old soldier in a way
:03:09. > :03:14.that would generate maximum media coverage. That the men, both from
:03:15. > :03:19.London, gloried in what they had done. Michael Adebolajo was given a
:03:20. > :03:25.whole`life term with no chance of parole. His accomplice jailed for a
:03:26. > :03:27.minimum of 45 years. Today Adebolajo's brother told the BBC he
:03:28. > :03:33.believed the sentencing was Islamophobic. Not only that but I
:03:34. > :03:37.think it was more trial by the public. There was a lot of public
:03:38. > :03:40.outrage, as could be understood. I mean, the death of a soldier in any
:03:41. > :03:44.country would provoke... Would provoke the outrage that it did. I
:03:45. > :03:50.would suggest that Justice Sweeney was simply giving in to that
:03:51. > :03:54.pressure. The sentencing has nothing to do with Islamophobia whatsoever.
:03:55. > :03:57.And what Adebolajo s brother said is, in fact, quite perverse and
:03:58. > :04:01.provocative in the extreme and should be condemned. I recall the
:04:02. > :04:03.trial's judge castigating the two murderers for trying to excuse their
:04:04. > :04:12.evil crime through an affiliation with Islam. The brother claimed
:04:13. > :04:22.Adebolajo is sorry for the distress caused to Lee Rigby's son.
:04:23. > :04:25.Young health care students at a London university are amongst the
:04:26. > :04:28.first in the country to experience what it's like to be old age
:04:29. > :04:31.pensioner ` with the help of a specially designed suit. It
:04:32. > :04:36.restricts movement and changes the way you see and hear. Nick Beake has
:04:37. > :04:40.been having a closer look. We're just going to go up a flight
:04:41. > :04:45.of stairs, OK? It's one small step and it's hard work. Can you see how
:04:46. > :04:48.many stairs there are? Hardly. 23`year`old Jalaruban is putting
:04:49. > :04:52.himself in the shoes of the patients he'll be treating in hospital.
:04:53. > :04:55.There's a very heavily weighted body suit to give the idea of weariness
:04:56. > :05:03.ofmovement, lack of flexibility in the spine. For the past few months,
:05:04. > :05:07.trainee health care assistants have been using this age`simulator suit.
:05:08. > :05:12.It greatly restricts movement and the special glasses replicate the
:05:13. > :05:16.likes of cataracts. Can you hear me? Yeah, I can hear
:05:17. > :05:21.you. What does it feel like? It feels very heavy. I can barely move
:05:22. > :05:23.myself. It's being used in the wake of scandals such as Mid Staffs,
:05:24. > :05:28.where hundreds of patients were neglected, maltreated and shown
:05:29. > :05:33.little empathy. Just walking around in this suit is extremely difficult.
:05:34. > :05:37.The strain on all your limbs and your back is considerable. And when
:05:38. > :05:40.you put these glasses on, the experience is made even more
:05:41. > :05:43.difficult. You might see that my hands are twitching at the moment.
:05:44. > :05:50.That's because there is an electrical pulse being sent through
:05:51. > :05:52.them to simulate twitching. So a normal day`to`day experience like
:05:53. > :06:00.pouring a glass of water is made considerably more difficult. No
:06:01. > :06:05.problems with mobility at Age Concern Kingston today, a drop`in
:06:06. > :06:08.centre for the over`60s. What's the verdict here? If you restrict
:06:09. > :06:12.people's movements and stuff like that, a young person, surely it can
:06:13. > :06:18.only teach them what they're going to look forward to in old age. I
:06:19. > :06:22.think it's a marvellous idea. Nobody realises what it's like to lose your
:06:23. > :06:25.balance. It's for that reason they hope this can build a better
:06:26. > :06:34.understanding of an older body and mind and lead to better care.
:06:35. > :06:38.BBC London has learnt that Crossrail will be extended to Reading. The
:06:39. > :06:42.plan was for it to end at Maidenhead ` but sources have told us it'll now
:06:43. > :06:46.go ten miles further west ` so a journey from Reading to London will
:06:47. > :06:48.take 50 minutes. An official announcement is expected tomorrow.
:06:49. > :06:58.That's it from me. Now the weather with Wendy Hurrell. Good evening. If
:06:59. > :07:02.it feels chilly to you, it is going to be warming up at the weekend.
:07:03. > :07:05.Tonight, though, despite the fact that we've got a fair amount of
:07:06. > :07:09.cloud, any breaks in it will be enough to turn a bit frosty and
:07:10. > :07:13.since we've also got some showers around, there could be some icy
:07:14. > :07:18.patches as well. Temperatures fall to freezing if not below in
:07:19. > :07:21.sheltered spots. A bit of mist and murk tomorrow morning. The brightest
:07:22. > :07:25.part of the day will be the morning. Come the afternoon, there will be
:07:26. > :07:28.showers around, generally more isolated than today but they could
:07:29. > :07:33.be quite lively. You might see hail and there will be a cold wind still
:07:34. > :07:35.blowing. On the outlook, it is warming up towards the weekend.
:07:36. > :07:44.Here's Nick Miller with more. Some of the many faces of spring
:07:45. > :07:47.weather showed themselves today. Sun in Scotland, snow in the showers
:07:48. > :07:54.that moved in across England. Hail as well. Adrian took this picture
:07:55. > :07:58.from Essex and the chilly feel stays with us for the rest of the week
:07:59. > :08:02.along with further showers. If you don't like this, wait for this!
:08:03. > :08:07.Temperatures heading up at the weekend. To achieve that, we need to
:08:08. > :08:10.change the weather pattern which is tailored towards a cold wind coming
:08:11. > :08:16.in from the North Sea and low pressure giving us showers. Cold
:08:17. > :08:18.enough for the rest of the night for the showers to fall as snow on
