:00:00. > :00:00.have a second baby. End of story. That's it for now. Now on BBC One,
:00:00. > :00:11.it's time for the news where you are.
:00:12. > :00:17.Welcome to BBC London News. The number of estate agents on the
:00:18. > :00:20.capitals high streets is on the rise. In one area in south`west
:00:21. > :00:23.London there are 15 branches on one street. Local traders say it's
:00:24. > :00:29.forcing them out because they can't afford the rents. Emma North has
:00:30. > :00:35.more. It is a part of London which likes
:00:36. > :00:39.to sign the city. Barnes boasts plenty of small businesses, a sense
:00:40. > :00:44.of community, and estate agents. Lots and lots of them. At the last
:00:45. > :00:52.count there were 15 branches on this street alone. There was nothing
:00:53. > :00:56.special about the property. It has certainly made business kina. We
:00:57. > :01:02.like the competition. There is nothing better than selling a
:01:03. > :01:09.property or when my manager comes in for a valuation and Chuck says the
:01:10. > :01:13.keys. That is a great feeling. With a lack of houses coming on the
:01:14. > :01:18.market, offers of hundreds of thousands of pounds above the asking
:01:19. > :01:22.price are not unheard of. There is a domino effect. High prices mean the
:01:23. > :01:26.estate agents make bigger profits. They are able to pay higher rent and
:01:27. > :01:31.landlords around here are putting their prices up as well. As a
:01:32. > :01:34.result, small businesses are finding it hard to survive. Local firms are
:01:35. > :01:42.all too aware of how to have ends might get. It does not bring people
:01:43. > :01:45.into Barnes, does it? You come here because you want to go shopping, not
:01:46. > :01:54.to look and estate agents. You can do that anywhere. So, we want to
:01:55. > :01:59.give the shops going. It is perhaps no surprise Barnes is a hotspot. But
:02:00. > :02:04.here in Walthamstow they are popping up to. Right across London, in fact.
:02:05. > :02:08.Although if there is any sign of a downturn, they could go as soon as
:02:09. > :02:13.they arrived. These businesses do not have a long`term plan. I cannot
:02:14. > :02:17.see, there is just not enough business to go around for everybody.
:02:18. > :02:23.People need to think very carefully who they choose to sell or let their
:02:24. > :02:27.homes to. But recent history shows once prices rise they don't go down.
:02:28. > :02:30.Even though the agents are changing the very areas they are trying to
:02:31. > :02:33.sell. A senior city executive has repaid
:02:34. > :02:36.more ?42,000 in train fares, which he's believed to have dodged by
:02:37. > :02:39.using an Oyster card. Southeastern Trains said the man would catch a
:02:40. > :02:43.train from Sussex without buying a ticket. At Cannon Street, he then
:02:44. > :02:46.used his Oyster card to pass through the barriers, so paying only seven
:02:47. > :02:49.?7.20 for an incomplete journey. He is believed to have done this for
:02:50. > :02:55.five years before being caught in November last year.
:02:56. > :02:58.Doreen Lawrence, the mother of murdered teenager Stephen Lawrence,
:02:59. > :03:00.could stand as Labour's candidate for the next London mayoral
:03:01. > :03:03.elections in two years' time. Party insiders hinted today that talks
:03:04. > :03:05.have been taking place about formally approaching Baroness
:03:06. > :03:19.Lawrence to stand in 2016. Marc Ashdown reports.
:03:20. > :03:22.She spent 18 years fighting for justice after the murder of her
:03:23. > :03:28.son. Could Doreen Lawrence now take on the top job in London? Labour
:03:29. > :03:31.appears to think so. Policy coordinator broke today, she is a
:03:32. > :03:35.class act, going from strength to strength. People in Westminster are
:03:36. > :03:40.starting to tip her as a potential mayor for our capital city. Now that
:03:41. > :03:44.is an interesting idea. Just this week, Doreen Lawrence was named in a
:03:45. > :03:49.poll as the most powerful woman in the country, so it is easy to see
:03:50. > :03:54.how she would be a popular choice. She was not available for comment
:03:55. > :04:01.today, but a source told us no formal approach has yet been made.
:04:02. > :04:08.So, would Londoners vote for her? Yes, if she did it, I would do it.
:04:09. > :04:12.She's amazing, isn't she? Really amazing. It's about time there were
:04:13. > :04:18.more non`white representation for London. The job would put her in
:04:19. > :04:21.charge of The Met police, slightly awkward paps, though some would say
:04:22. > :04:26.she is an interesting, refreshing candidate. Of course, the job is
:04:27. > :04:31.complex, it covers more than policing, for which she is best
:04:32. > :04:37.known. ?11 billion of the budget is on transport plus hundreds of
:04:38. > :04:40.thousands on housing. I think candidates would want her to have a
:04:41. > :04:47.wide view of what she would do at City Hall. Many still see tacit jowl
:04:48. > :04:51.as the most likely Labour candidate, but party insiders describe Baroness
:04:52. > :04:55.Lawrence as an influential, dynamic campaigner who could have that broad
:04:56. > :05:01.appeal needed to win over Londoners and wingback City Hall.
:05:02. > :05:07.Well, let's take a look at the weather now with Kate Kinsella.
:05:08. > :05:14.After a glorious spring day, pleasant evening with sunshine. Once
:05:15. > :05:19.the sun sets, there is a chilly evening on the cards, temperatures
:05:20. > :05:24.into single figures. Blue sky and sunshine tomorrow morning. A bit of
:05:25. > :05:28.a north`westerly breeze, some fair weather cloud bubbling up.
:05:29. > :05:33.Temperatures between 14 and 15 degrees. High pressure dominates for
:05:34. > :05:38.the next few days. Plenty of sunshine, feeling warm during the
:05:39. > :05:42.day but chilly overnight. Plenty of fine, dry weather to come. That's a
:05:43. > :05:45.bit more cloud to the end of the week, but the wind is light and the
:05:46. > :05:53.temperatures stay in the mid teens. That's it for now. I'll be back just
:05:54. > :06:09.before 10.20pm, but for now, have a lovely evening.
:06:10. > :06:16.We got to 17 degrees in the sunshine in London and many places enjoyed a
:06:17. > :06:19.pleasant day. A different story for the zero wherein was quite wet and
:06:20. > :06:27.windy. You can see that cloud is moving south. Things do improve
:06:28. > :06:28.across Scotland. Showers become confined to the far north and the
:06:29. > :06:30.winds ease
