:00:00. > :00:15.Blakelock. Here on One we can now join the BBC's news

:00:16. > :00:20.Good evening. The number of applications for a Primary School

:00:21. > :00:23.place in London has passed the 100,000 mark for the first time.

:00:24. > :00:26.Figures released this afternoon show that 20% of children have missed out

:00:27. > :00:29.on their first choice of school. While five thousand pupils have not

:00:30. > :00:32.received an offer from any of their six choices. Marc Ashdown reports on

:00:33. > :00:40.the growing pressure on London's school system.

:00:41. > :00:47.An anxious wait in this household. Like parents across the city, the

:00:48. > :00:50.refresh button is worn out waiting for an e`mail confirming a school

:00:51. > :00:56.place. It is everything, really. Starting her at four years old, both

:00:57. > :00:59.my husband and I've stayed at university for a long time and we

:01:00. > :01:02.know this is the beginning of a long career at school. You want to get it

:01:03. > :01:10.right. The situation will only get worse. The Department for Education

:01:11. > :01:12.estimates that a further 133,000 primary aged pupils will need a

:01:13. > :01:15.place in London alone over the next few years. They are going to need

:01:16. > :01:21.more of these. Lots more. more of these.

:01:22. > :01:25.The school in Barnett is brand`new. Sort of. It was a small school but

:01:26. > :01:31.on Monday it moves to a new site with double the capacity. In the old

:01:32. > :01:38.site, we had children everywhere. Every part of the building, learning

:01:39. > :01:42.groups and classes. We had over 600 children on quite a small site, but

:01:43. > :01:47.we coped and we were bursting at the seams. The council has already

:01:48. > :01:50.created thousands of extra places and admits that there is no letup.

:01:51. > :01:58.Local authorities can only do so much. All new schools have to be

:01:59. > :02:02.academies or free schools. Out of their control. It has led to

:02:03. > :02:06.criticism that they do not always match supply with demand. What is

:02:07. > :02:09.critical is the free schools have to be supported by local parents and

:02:10. > :02:12.they have to get parents to say that they wanted this school in this

:02:13. > :02:17.area. It cannot just pop up anywhere. They have to have parental

:02:18. > :02:21.support. They also need new buildings, often a serious stumbling

:02:22. > :02:24.block. The mayor is about to announce up to ten sites that he

:02:25. > :02:31.will lease to be used for new schools, some recently closed police

:02:32. > :02:37.or fire stations. This year, 102,000 pupils applied for a place, up 3% on

:02:38. > :02:44.last year. Across London, body percent did not get a first choice

:02:45. > :02:49.school. 95% of one of their chosen six schools, meaning that 5000 got

:02:50. > :02:53.none. In Redbridge, day of keeping busy and keeping things crossed has

:02:54. > :02:56.paid off. They got their top choice school.

:02:57. > :02:59.Unemployment in the capital is at a five year low, having fallen to

:03:00. > :03:02.7.8%. The Office for National Statistics says 343,000 people were

:03:03. > :03:08.out of work in the last quarter, a fall of 12,000. It brings the total

:03:09. > :03:13.number of those employed in London to more than four million.

:03:14. > :03:17.The man cleared of killing PC Keith Blakelock in the 1985 Tottenham

:03:18. > :03:23.riots has told the BBC he would feel angry too if he were a member of the

:03:24. > :03:26.murdered policeman's family. Nicky Jacobs, who was 16 at the time of

:03:27. > :03:30.the killing, was found not guilty last week. In his first interview

:03:31. > :03:36.since being cleared he said he reiterated his innocence. I was on

:03:37. > :03:44.the estate when he died. But that was not there, I was not in the

:03:45. > :03:48.crowd chasing him. I was not urging anyone on to do anything to him. And

:03:49. > :03:50.you can see the full interview on tonight's 'Newsnight' programme over

:03:51. > :03:53.on BBC Two. The capital is one of the first

:03:54. > :03:56.cities in the world to get its own internet domain. From the end of the

:03:57. > :04:00.month, thousands of businesses can apply for a web address ending with

:04:01. > :04:02.'dot London' rather than 'co dot uk'. Anyone in the world can

:04:03. > :04:11.register but, initially, people in the capital will get priority. Tarah

:04:12. > :04:14.Welsh reports. The way they trade here has not

:04:15. > :04:18.changed much for hundreds of years. But even this most traditional

:04:19. > :04:24.business is keeping up with the times. We want to be part of London

:04:25. > :04:28.going forward as well. So we have plans for a new market and it seems

:04:29. > :04:32.apt to have a new domain name. London is one of the first cities to

:04:33. > :04:37.get its own domain. And it has some high`profile supporters. At the

:04:38. > :04:42.moment, able want to say that they are from London sold in name

:04:43. > :04:45.includes London, and it is very confusing. It is very simple when

:04:46. > :04:51.you can just say my business dot London. But is this just nice to

:04:52. > :04:57.have or is it essential for businesses? The naming system has

:04:58. > :05:04.become quite clogged. For many small businesses, it is difficult to get

:05:05. > :05:09.their name .com, because that may already have been sold. Also .co

:05:10. > :05:15..uk. So dot London is an opportunity to get a short, relevant name. Most

:05:16. > :05:19.names will start at under ?50 but popular ones could spark a bidding

:05:20. > :05:25.war. Small businesses may find themselves bidding on a domain,

:05:26. > :05:30.especially if they do not have the .com. They will want to be dot

:05:31. > :05:35.London domain but they may be up against ten or 15 other businesses.

:05:36. > :05:38.That will force up prices. That has not put this group of session

:05:39. > :05:44.musicians off. They have already got beers. We know that artists around

:05:45. > :05:48.the world search for music services specifically in London because of

:05:49. > :05:53.the reputation. Being directly aligned with London and the domain

:05:54. > :05:59.name will hopefully ensure that we are inexplicably linked. ``

:06:00. > :06:05.inextricably linked. Tens of thousands registered when dot Berlin

:06:06. > :06:10.launched last month. Those behind London will be hoping for a similar

:06:11. > :06:12.take`up. The London Underground says that

:06:13. > :06:16.should travellers will face disruption this Easter. Sections of

:06:17. > :06:23.the Bakerloo, district, Jubilee and Piccadilly lines as part `` as well

:06:24. > :06:26.as the overgrown vines will be closed this weekend.

:06:27. > :06:28.That's all from me. I'll say good night and hand you over to Susan

:06:29. > :06:31.Powell with the weather. That's all from me. I'll say good

:06:32. > :06:34.night and hand you Good evening. Plenty of blue skies and sunshine

:06:35. > :06:39.across the region through today. Tomorrow, workload, but don't be

:06:40. > :06:43.disheartened. I do not think it will spoil your day. It will mostly be

:06:44. > :06:48.patchy cloud, and still plenty of sunshine to come. Overnight, largely

:06:49. > :06:52.clear skies and a little bit of cloud may drift down from the north.

:06:53. > :06:57.With clear skies, temperatures dropping sharply. Towns and cities

:06:58. > :07:01.down at six degrees. Rural areas, closer to freezing. Gardeners

:07:02. > :07:06.beware. First thing tomorrow, but if sunshine to get the day underway. Is

:07:07. > :07:11.it pans out, we will see the sunshine becoming more hazy, staying

:07:12. > :07:16.right into the afternoon. As we lose the easterly winds, we will pick up

:07:17. > :07:19.more of a westerly and it will feel warmer. Sunspots could hit 20

:07:20. > :07:23.degrees. That is the way it is shaping up for Thursday double

:07:24. > :07:28.review with a look at the summary for the next couple of days. `` but

:07:29. > :07:40.I will leave you. The National forecast follows.

:07:41. > :07:46.Good evening. The good news is that it will be a reasonably sunny start

:07:47. > :07:49.to the Easter weekend. The bad news is that it will not stay that way

:07:50. > :07:55.for many of us. Overnight tonight, many of us will be dry with patchy

:07:56. > :07:59.rain across Scotland. Some of us will -- some of this will track into

:08:00. > :08:05.northern England and were. Quite patchy in nature. Not a lot of rain.

:08:06. > :08:09.Dry further south. Maybe a touch of frost across the far south-east. The

:08:10. > :08:13.other end of the UK, blustery showers across the North West of

:08:14. > :08:18.Scotland but further south, patchy rain across northern and will. --

:08:19. > :08:19.North England and
