:00:00. > :00:19.the papers on the BBC News Channel in a few minutes. Now

:00:20. > :00:22.Good evening. Millions of commuters had their

:00:23. > :00:28.journeys disrupted on the first full day of the tube strike. Today's

:00:29. > :00:31.action, over plans to close ticket offices, brought parts of the

:00:32. > :00:35.network to a standstill. But there's a row over how effective it's been.

:00:36. > :00:38.The walk`out continues until tomorrow evening, with another

:00:39. > :00:44.strike planned for next week. Here's our transport correspondent Tom

:00:45. > :00:50.Edwards. It was dubbed Crush hour. Millions

:00:51. > :00:55.had to battle to work through the queues, delays and disruption. It

:00:56. > :01:01.brings London to a relative standstill. It is chaos. It has

:01:02. > :01:06.caused murder on the buses and cabs and everywhere you go. The strikes

:01:07. > :01:11.are about changes to some of the biggest in the tube history. London

:01:12. > :01:15.Underground want staff at busy stations on the concourses. That

:01:16. > :01:21.will mean at more of the quieter ones staff will work alone. I can

:01:22. > :01:26.understand people want to be paid properly but don't take it out on

:01:27. > :01:32.ask. I absolutely support them. Of course it makes travel difficult but

:01:33. > :01:36.that is the point. It will allow London Underground to move their

:01:37. > :01:42.positions, stop being so dogmatic and call a halt to the job losses.

:01:43. > :01:48.Call a halt to closing every single booking office and have proper

:01:49. > :01:53.meaningful consultation. The RMT thought they had got a review of

:01:54. > :01:57.ticket offices from London Underground in every station. This

:01:58. > :02:02.letter to the late Bob Crow outlines it which could result in some ticket

:02:03. > :02:08.offices remaining open. Transport bosses blame a lack of engagement

:02:09. > :02:12.and say all to get offices will be closed. Unfortunately, the RMT's

:02:13. > :02:17.approach has been to say no to everything. I have not heard a

:02:18. > :02:23.single constructive proposal from them. The underground closed for a

:02:24. > :02:32.one`day strike... The tube has a history of strikes. This was 1962.

:02:33. > :02:36.But we are entering a turbulent period. London Underground has to

:02:37. > :02:42.save money after a government grant was cut. These changes could also

:02:43. > :02:46.provide valuable retail space. Why don't we keep the ticket office is

:02:47. > :02:52.open to give people a sense of safety and security that they want?

:02:53. > :02:57.The Mayor once opposed to good office closures. Politics is a big

:02:58. > :03:03.part of this dispute. There is also a leadership contest at the RMT. Our

:03:04. > :03:07.London are suffering because of your dispute? What is happening, I do not

:03:08. > :03:13.want to intrude into the private grief of the RMT, but I think there

:03:14. > :03:17.is unquestionably an issue about the succession of the leadership there

:03:18. > :03:23.and there is a little bit of a power vacuum. The RMT deny that but so

:03:24. > :03:26.far, compromise looks a long way off. Commuters can expect the same

:03:27. > :03:28.thing tomorrow. And Tom's outside Warren Street

:03:29. > :03:38.Station.What's your assessment of today? The last trains have left

:03:39. > :03:42.central London. I think privately TFL will be quite pleased with

:03:43. > :03:47.themselves, talking about running 50% of services. The flip side of

:03:48. > :03:53.that is 50% of services did not run and that caused Heck of a lot of

:03:54. > :03:57.disruption interestingly, TFL released some oyster data. They said

:03:58. > :04:02.90% of cards which were normally used were used today on TFL

:04:03. > :04:08.services. Presumably that means a lot of people switched over to

:04:09. > :04:14.buses. It also implies 10% of people worked from home, walked or cycle to

:04:15. > :04:19.work. In terms of this dispute, weighed we go from here? We have

:04:20. > :04:23.three days of tube strikes planned for next week. I think the earliest

:04:24. > :04:29.we could get talks is Friday. That Israeli cutting it fine. At the

:04:30. > :04:32.moment, both sides are completely entrenched. Thank you.

:04:33. > :04:36.So with the strike continuing until tomorrow evening let's see how

:04:37. > :04:41.things are looking for tomorrow. We can cross to Alice Bhandhukravi

:04:42. > :04:44.who's got the details. Thank you.

:04:45. > :04:47.The main problem today was on the roads, there was gridlock in parts

:04:48. > :04:51.of central London, especially in the West End, and that may well be the

:04:52. > :04:54.case tomorrow. Now on public transport, the services which worked

:04:55. > :04:57.well today are expected to operate tomorrow, that means the Overground

:04:58. > :05:01.and the DLR will be running, and there will be extra bus services.

:05:02. > :05:06.But of course, it has been very difficult for most of us travelling

:05:07. > :05:08.around today. This is the current picture and we can expect more

:05:09. > :05:12.problems tomorrow on the following lines:

:05:13. > :05:18.Firstly the Waterloo and City Line, which has no service at all. There

:05:19. > :05:21.are some station closures on the Northern Line, the Jubilee Line and

:05:22. > :05:27.the Victoria Line although all three are running a limited service. The

:05:28. > :05:30.Circle Line is running between Hammersmith and Aldgate, but there

:05:31. > :05:33.are station closures. The Hammersmith City is running but

:05:34. > :05:38.only between Edgware Road and Barking, again with station closures

:05:39. > :05:42.along the way. For the Piccadilly Line, there is no service, except

:05:43. > :05:47.for the west end of the line. Check before you travel especially if

:05:48. > :05:50.you're trying to get to Heathrow. There's a patchy service on the

:05:51. > :05:54.District Line, with some stations closed. And it's a similar picture

:05:55. > :05:57.for the Central Line, some trains are running, especially to the far

:05:58. > :06:01.west and the far east of the line, but trains are not stopping at all

:06:02. > :06:09.the stations on the line. Finally there is no service on Heathrow

:06:10. > :06:14.Connect. That is because of separate strike action. Heathrow Express has

:06:15. > :06:16.a reduced service. And we'll be keeping you up`to`date

:06:17. > :06:20.with all the latest travel information throughout the strikes.

:06:21. > :06:25.There are regular updates on our radio station BBC London 94.9. You

:06:26. > :06:30.can also follow developments on our website and on Twitter. And we'll

:06:31. > :06:32.bring you the latest in our TV bulletins tomorrow morning during

:06:33. > :06:37.Breakfast. That's all from me. So I'll wish you

:06:38. > :06:47.a very goodnight and hand you over to Sara for the weather.

:06:48. > :06:50.Thank you. To add to the travel woes, tomorrow morning we could be

:06:51. > :06:55.looking at the fog which could affect some of the airports. Once

:06:56. > :07:01.the fog clears away, it is looking like a nice day tomorrow and warmer

:07:02. > :07:08.than today. We do have some mist and fog to form by tomorrow morning. It

:07:09. > :07:13.could be Gatwick Airport which is affected by that. And of course if

:07:14. > :07:16.you are travelling on the roads. Eventually, that starts to clear

:07:17. > :07:27.away. Then the sun starts to come out and it could be warmer than

:07:28. > :07:33.today. It is all change on Thursday. A lot of rain to start the day and

:07:34. > :07:42.some sharp showers. It will be colder still on Friday.

:07:43. > :07:46.Hello again, the holiday weekend is not far-away. We are still expecting

:07:47. > :07:54.the weather to change significantly before then. Some patchy rain from

:07:55. > :07:58.northern Scotland tomorrow. There is a lot of cloud coming in from the

:07:59. > :08:05.North Sea which is pushing its way inland. There could be quite a bit

:08:06. > :08:11.of fog around in the morning. It should be a mild, misty, murky start

:08:12. > :08:15.to Wednesday. The mist and fog should lift quickly. The cloud

:08:16. > :08:20.thinning and breaking. Sunny spells developing in many places. That

:08:21. > :08:24.could trigger some or showers. Over the Pennines we could get some late

:08:25. > :08:25.showers, and tricky for the evening rush
