:00:00. > :00:00.That is all the sport, back to you. That is it from us, now on BBC One,
:00:00. > :00:00.it is time for the news where you are.
:00:00. > :00:22.Goodbye. Good evening and welcome to the
:00:23. > :00:25.programme. A Conservative candidate for Essex has stood down in a row
:00:26. > :00:28.over homophobic and anti`Islamic tweets. David Bishop was standing
:00:29. > :00:32.for the South Brentwood seat in the local council elections. But he's
:00:33. > :00:36.now resigned from the Tory party, saying it's to "avoid any further
:00:37. > :00:45.embarrassment. " Sarah Harris reports.
:00:46. > :00:49.Banners say what makes Redford proud but comments published by the local
:00:50. > :00:59.candidate are, he said himself, nothing to be proud about. He said
:01:00. > :01:05.that Islam was the religion of peace and rape. Other tweets were
:01:06. > :01:09.homophobic. He has now resigned. In a letter, dated bishop apologised
:01:10. > :01:13.for the offence he had caused. He said he had let himself and the
:01:14. > :01:18.party down. He said he hoped the people of South Brent Woodward
:01:19. > :01:22.forgive him for his lack of judgement. The local party say they
:01:23. > :01:27.have acted swiftly and conclusively and in the interests of the
:01:28. > :01:31.Conservative Party. The rest can `` the resignation comes weeks after
:01:32. > :01:37.David Bishop was selected to represent the Brentwood South Ward.
:01:38. > :01:42.Those I spoke to said it was the right thing to do. How can you
:01:43. > :01:47.represent people of your prejudice towards a group of people in their
:01:48. > :01:52.community. Many things can be misinterpreted and if you make a
:01:53. > :01:55.joke you have to think about how the consequences will be taken by other
:01:56. > :02:03.people. Shows what sort of person he is. Not very caring about other
:02:04. > :02:08.people's feelings. Conservatives say they will not have a Conservative.
:02:09. > :02:11.Labour, the Lib Dems and UKIP will contest the ward.
:02:12. > :02:14.A woman is in a critical condition in hospital after she was hit by an
:02:15. > :02:18.unmarked police car in London. The victim in her 20s was struck by the
:02:19. > :02:21.vehicle at the junction of Kingsland Road and Ridley Road in Hackney last
:02:22. > :02:26.night. The police car was responding to an incident. It's now been
:02:27. > :02:29.referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.
:02:30. > :02:33.A 13`year`old boy has been charged with the murder of a man who was
:02:34. > :02:36.stabbed during a break`in in south`west London. Martin Thomas,
:02:37. > :02:40.was found at his home in Roehampton, last month. The teenager, who can't
:02:41. > :02:43.be identified, was arrested on Friday evening.
:02:44. > :02:46.Alongside the local elections later this month, voters will be asked to
:02:47. > :02:49.decide which party they think best represents their views in Europe.
:02:50. > :02:59.London's MEP's are divided, even as to whether the capital would benefit
:03:00. > :03:05.more from being in or out of the EU? Our political editor Tim Donovan has
:03:06. > :03:10.more. Howard our capital fair without decisions being made in
:03:11. > :03:14.Brussels. The city of London wants to stay in
:03:15. > :03:19.the EU. They recognise the huge benefits they get from being part of
:03:20. > :03:24.the single market and the CBI has carried out surveys which show that
:03:25. > :03:29.the overwhelming majority, 80% of their companies, want to stay in the
:03:30. > :03:37.EU. But the Conservatives say people will only be convinced if there is
:03:38. > :03:41.reform. Depends who you speak to. You get a range of views. The big
:03:42. > :03:44.organisations with many lobbyists and public affairs people who like
:03:45. > :03:49.going to Brussels every week, of course they are in favour of it. But
:03:50. > :03:53.I speak to small companies who are really worried. What most people
:03:54. > :03:57.want, if you look at the opinion polls, is not in out now, they want
:03:58. > :04:05.the chance to reform Europe. Of London's current eight MEPs, three
:04:06. > :04:15.are conservative, two our labour while the Lib Dems, green and UKIP
:04:16. > :04:19.have one each. I think London would lose a lot of the vibrancy and
:04:20. > :04:26.diversity. It would lose a lot of the legislation which makes it a
:04:27. > :04:30.pleasant place to live such as air quality and water quality. If we
:04:31. > :04:33.wanted to continue to trade with Europe we would have to accept all
:04:34. > :04:39.the rules and regulations. We would have to be like Norway but having no
:04:40. > :04:44.say. I do not think that is fit for Britain. This idea that we cannot
:04:45. > :04:49.exist without Europe is nonsense. London has existed for centuries but
:04:50. > :04:55.we have only been in the EU for 40. London has long been considered more
:04:56. > :05:01.Eurosceptic than the rest of the country.
:05:02. > :05:03.Let's find out what the weather will be like for the bank holiday with
:05:04. > :05:17.Sara Thornton. Good evening. It has been a lovely
:05:18. > :05:25.weekend so far. More on the horizon to come. The sunshine will turn hazy
:05:26. > :05:33.as we go through Monday. High cloud at first, then medium level cloud.
:05:34. > :05:39.We stayed dry. We have some rain to come through. It is not so cold to
:05:40. > :05:48.start. The temperatures may not get as high in the afternoon on Tuesday.
:05:49. > :05:53.As we go through this week, it will be quite breezy with the risk of
:05:54. > :05:57.rain showers. That is it. I will be back just
:05:58. > :06:08.after 10:15pm tonight. Have a lovely evening, goodbye.
:06:09. > :06:15.Good evening. Today we have had the sunniest skies in the South whereas
:06:16. > :06:20.in the north it has been quite cloudy. Tomorrow, we switch things
:06:21. > :06:21.around. In the east we will have warm,
