:00:00. > 3:59:59with boot and ball may be settled by the smallest margins. That is all

:00:00. > :00:17.from us. Now Good evening. UKIP may be today's

:00:18. > :00:22.big winners nationally, but in London, it's the Labour Party that

:00:23. > :00:23.has flourished. They're now in control of more councils than they

:00:24. > :00:31.have been in the last 40 years. This is what the political map of

:00:32. > :00:34.London councils looked like before last night. And this is the picture

:00:35. > :00:39.tonight, with Labour gaining 168 seats and a total of five boroughs

:00:40. > :00:41.across the capital. That's Croydon, and Hammersmith and Fulham from the

:00:42. > :00:45.Conservatives, as well as Harrow, Merton and Redbridge. There was some

:00:46. > :00:47.small consolation for the Conservatives, who gained Kingston

:00:48. > :01:06.from the Liberal Democrats. Here's our political editor, Tim Donovan.

:01:07. > :01:10.It was Labour's biggest scalp, the Conservatives' most grievous blow,

:01:11. > :01:16.losing control of Hammersmith, the model borrower, even after all those

:01:17. > :01:26.year`on`year cuts in council tax. Those who do not know `` normally

:01:27. > :01:32.vote for us have voted for us. We said we will do them proud. Croydon

:01:33. > :01:39.was the closest contest before an exhausted leader had to watch the

:01:40. > :01:43.council slip away to Labour. It will show people you cannot play with

:01:44. > :01:49.fire without getting burned. When they see what happens when you get a

:01:50. > :01:54.Labour council back again, who messed it up, they will look at the

:01:55. > :01:57.election next year and want to re`elect a Conservative government.

:01:58. > :02:02.He launched the campaign in Redbridge and there was a good

:02:03. > :02:06.reason he was back there today. I want to congratulate everybody in

:02:07. > :02:11.Redbridge, doing this incredible job, winning majority control of the

:02:12. > :02:15.Council for the first time in history for Labour. With Labour

:02:16. > :02:20.winning Merton and Harrow, it has not controlled so many council since

:02:21. > :02:27.1971, which left the Tories looking for consolation prizes. That was

:02:28. > :02:31.forthcoming in Kingston, which was one reason to get the balloons out

:02:32. > :02:40.and help to burst the Lib Dem bubble. Those seats have gone Labour

:02:41. > :02:42.when Labour should have been romping home is not surprisingly. It is

:02:43. > :02:48.important to recognise Labour have not made progress they would expect

:02:49. > :02:53.in London and across the country and nowhere in Kingston upon Thames. The

:02:54. > :03:00.Tory mayor in London couldn't help the Tory situation here.

:03:01. > :03:05.Labour does not seem to have made the games you would expect in this

:03:06. > :03:13.electoral cycle. The Liberal Democrats lost a lot of councillors

:03:14. > :03:18.and were left with Sutton. We knew we would have a hard time next year

:03:19. > :03:23.will it be that people will continue to punish us all remember that jobs

:03:24. > :03:31.have gone up, unemployment has gone down and the economy is in a healthy

:03:32. > :03:36.state. More tears in Watford. At least these were of joy. Dorothy

:03:37. > :03:42.Thornhill was elected mayor for the fourth time. People know when they

:03:43. > :03:48.vote for air, it is who is in charge of the town hall? Their leader

:03:49. > :03:53.retained his seat. Barnet Conservatives had to wait anxiously

:03:54. > :04:04.to see if they held on or given into another Labour surge. Tim will join

:04:05. > :04:06.us in a moment. So why has UKIP performed well in Essex, where

:04:07. > :04:09.they've forced town halls in Thurrock, Basildon, Castle Point and

:04:10. > :04:12.Southend into no overall control. But failed to make much headway in

:04:13. > :04:16.London. Nick Beake has been talking to voters.

:04:17. > :04:21.Whitechapel market Tower Hamlets. A diverse borough in a multicultural

:04:22. > :04:28.metropolis. Not exactly rich pickings Nigel Farage here. Did you

:04:29. > :04:34.vote for UKIP? No. I would not dream of voting for them. There have been

:04:35. > :04:41.comments going around, hate comments. Almost a fifth of the

:04:42. > :04:45.workforce in London was born abroad, a city which fails to embrace UKIP

:04:46. > :04:52.in the way other British towns and cities did. Today a senior UKIP

:04:53. > :04:57.figure said the party had not done as well in London because it was a

:04:58. > :05:00.cultured, educated and young place. There were elements of the

:05:01. > :05:08.metropolitan elite living here, she said, who did not feel the problems

:05:09. > :05:17.of other people in the country. I find state 's like that from UKIP

:05:18. > :05:23.are very common. It is insulting `` statements. It says they are looking

:05:24. > :05:29.for excuses. But head east and you find support grows for UKIP, a

:05:30. > :05:36.little. The Labour candidate held on as mayor in new, but UKIP came

:05:37. > :05:42.third. We do not get the support in these areas. I did not quite

:05:43. > :05:49.understand about them so I did not vote for them. Their views are quite

:05:50. > :05:56.strong. You either side with them or you do not side with them. It is not

:05:57. > :06:08.middle ground. Labour. Why not UKIP? Racism. When you get to zone

:06:09. > :06:13.six, favouring is the whitest and furthest east rather. Support for

:06:14. > :06:18.UKIP seems to be creeping up to that of their Essex neighbours. Are you a

:06:19. > :06:25.first`time UKIP voter? Yes, normally conservative. I am not racist. I

:06:26. > :06:30.have colours neighbours and they are fantastic. I am not racist but it is

:06:31. > :06:34.getting overbearing, everything you go to, the Housing, I have

:06:35. > :06:40.grandchildren growing up, what chance will they have? Some of the

:06:41. > :06:46.views here might seem dated to more diverse parts of London. This is a

:06:47. > :06:54.city which bucked the national trend, though. Almost all London

:06:55. > :07:03.councils have declared. There are still key results to come in. What

:07:04. > :07:08.did UKIP end up with? This city does buck the trend, ending up with 12.

:07:09. > :07:18.Favouring came back not long ago and that was no overall control ``

:07:19. > :07:23.Havering. They have three in Bexley and two in Bromley, so it is

:07:24. > :07:28.confined to at a London. They made little headway in inner London.

:07:29. > :07:36.Barnet, we are waiting for two wards, I think will stop it is very

:07:37. > :07:40.close. Slightly confusing because there is another ward, held by

:07:41. > :07:44.Labour, which has been outside the election because one of the

:07:45. > :07:49.candidates died earlier in the week. That will be done later. And Tower

:07:50. > :07:56.Hamlets, the battle for mayor, it looks like it will go late. We are

:07:57. > :08:01.told it is very close. They are still counting the first, and we are

:08:02. > :08:06.not clear if it will go into the second round. First preference is

:08:07. > :08:13.still being counted. Between those two we will get a view of the extent

:08:14. > :08:17.the Labour. It has been a good day and night the Labour. And if they

:08:18. > :08:23.were to pick up Tower Hamlets and do this in Barnet, which would be like

:08:24. > :08:27.Hammersmith and Fulham, amazing, it would be a record performance, 22

:08:28. > :08:33.authorities in terms of those that they run.

:08:34. > :08:39.You can see more on the results of the website. That is all. I will

:08:40. > :08:45.hand you over for a view of the weather. The bank holiday will kick

:08:46. > :08:51.off on a showery note. It will improve. Tomorrow, scattered

:08:52. > :08:58.showers. Some of those will be heavy and possibly thundery. Through the

:08:59. > :09:02.early hours of Saturday, showers heading in from the south and

:09:03. > :09:10.thunder to start the weekend stop there will be a breeze. Not a great

:09:11. > :09:14.start to the day. We are left with sunny intervals and also scattered

:09:15. > :09:21.showers and the risk of thunder and lightning. By Sunday, things are

:09:22. > :09:28.looking optimistic. Still a small chance of a shower. That is how the

:09:29. > :09:32.next few days are looking. I'll pass you over to Peter Gibson and

:09:33. > :09:32.National forecast. you over to Peter Gibson and

:09:33. > :09:45.National forecast. The bank holiday weekend weather is

:09:46. > :09:50.not looking user-friendly although most places should get one decent

:09:51. > :10:00.day out of the three and some places will get two. We have low pressure,

:10:01. > :10:04.and there will be showers around over the next couple of days

:10:05. > :10:11.particularly. Sunshine breaking through now and again. It will pick

:10:12. > :10:21.up temperatures. Tonight we have rain. We have had thunderstorms in

:10:22. > :10:22.northern England. They are moving into Northern Ireland. A lot of
