:00:00. > :00:00.Thank you. That is all from us for this evening. It is good night from
:00:00. > :00:13.me, and on BBC One, we joined the BBC news teams wherever you are.
:00:14. > :00:18.Good evening and welcome to the programme. Labour has doubled the
:00:19. > :00:21.number of MEPs it has in the capital, winning half of the
:00:22. > :00:23.region's eight seats in the European elections. Labour topped the poll,
:00:24. > :00:27.taking one seat from the Conservatives, leaving them with
:00:28. > :00:30.two. It was a bad night for the Liberal Democrats ` they've been
:00:31. > :00:34.left with no London MEPs. And there was no change for UKIP and the Green
:00:35. > :00:38.Party ` they kept one seat each. With a full round up of the results
:00:39. > :00:46.and what it means for London, here's our Political Correspondent, Karl
:00:47. > :00:51.Mercer. It was a long night at City Hall as London waited to find out
:00:52. > :01:03.how the European votes had gone. Held up by a bit late `` by a
:01:04. > :01:05.delayed count, they had to wait until the results were finally
:01:06. > :01:13.announced at three o'clock in the morning. The results are as
:01:14. > :01:19.follows... It was bad news for the Liberal Democrats, battered in
:01:20. > :01:29.Thursday 's elections the European results were no better. Sarah
:01:30. > :01:38.Ludford, losing her seat after 15 years. I think it is bad news there
:01:39. > :01:43.is no MP from the Liberal Democrats. There are now 18 councils
:01:44. > :01:49.in the capital without Liberal Democrat councillors, and the party
:01:50. > :01:53.controls just one town Hall. As a party we have been here before. The
:01:54. > :01:59.first time I was elected the party was up 3% in the national opinion
:02:00. > :02:09.polls, but the party is resilient. In my London Borough of Sutton, we
:02:10. > :02:13.have an overwhelming majority and others can learn from what we have
:02:14. > :02:17.achieved. These results follow up the disastrous performance in the
:02:18. > :02:37.race to become London mayor in 2012. Back then, Brian Paddick got less
:02:38. > :02:42.than 45% of the vote. They will have lost a great deal of their activist
:02:43. > :02:48.base, and that in turn makes it hard to win general election season next
:02:49. > :02:53.year because councillors are closely related to having a decent activist
:02:54. > :03:00.base. Once again, the winners were the Labour Party following up on
:03:01. > :03:04.their strong showing in the borough elections. We are proud of the
:03:05. > :03:20.result today. It is not an exceptional results, `` it is an
:03:21. > :03:34.exceptional results. London once again bucked the trend but UKIP's
:03:35. > :03:38.sole winner was in combating mood. The Conservatives lost one of their
:03:39. > :03:46.MEPs down from three to two in London. People predicted a bloody
:03:47. > :03:50.nose for the us, a year to go from the general election we are neck and
:03:51. > :03:56.neck with Labour, it is a good result. With the UKIP threat not as
:03:57. > :04:01.great in London, the Green MEP held on for another five years. I thought
:04:02. > :04:06.tonight was going to be a close run thing so I wasn't sure about
:04:07. > :04:10.returning to the parliament again. Thank you, London voters. A bit of
:04:11. > :04:14.something for everyone in London with most claiming a victory of
:04:15. > :04:17.sorts, apart from the Lib Dems of course.
:04:18. > :04:22.Karl joins me in the studio now. A bad night for the Lib Dems ` what
:04:23. > :04:28.else have we learnt? In a sense it is two election down, want to go,
:04:29. > :04:35.because next year we will be talking about the general election. The Lib
:04:36. > :04:39.Dems are in a bad place, the MPs in the capital at the moment will be
:04:40. > :04:43.looking over their shoulder, thinking we have to work hard.
:04:44. > :04:49.Labour will feel they have done well, and in areas like Brent,
:04:50. > :04:54.Harrow, Haringey and Ealing, all with key marginal seats they need to
:04:55. > :04:59.take next year, they did really well so they will be feeling bullish.
:05:00. > :05:05.Sadiq Khan might be mentioned yet again, in terms of being a mayoral
:05:06. > :05:09.candidate. The Conservatives will be saying their vote held up reasonably
:05:10. > :05:14.well in London, they were not that far behind Labour. UKIP have said
:05:15. > :05:18.they will stand a candidate in every constituency, but we didn't see in
:05:19. > :05:26.London the same sort of search result for them in the rest of the
:05:27. > :05:34.country. `` the same sort of surge.
:05:35. > :05:37.Outside of the capital and the Liberal Democrats did manage to
:05:38. > :05:39.retain their MEP in the south east region, which includes Surrey,
:05:40. > :05:42.Berkshire and Buckinghamshire. This was despite a strong showing from
:05:43. > :05:45.UKIP, where Nigel Farage was one of four MEPs elected. UKIP also did
:05:46. > :05:47.well in the eastern region, which includes Hertfordshire and Essex,
:05:48. > :05:51.winning three seats. The Greens will be disappointed as they just missed
:05:52. > :05:54.out on a seat here even though they polled over 8% of the vote.
:05:55. > :05:57.Meanwhile one borough has still not declared its final result from last
:05:58. > :06:00.Thursday's local election. The count in Tower Hamlets was suspended at
:06:01. > :06:02.three o'clock this morning and won't start again until tomorrow. The
:06:03. > :06:06.delay has been caused because ballot papers for the Bromley South ward
:06:07. > :06:08.have to be recounted. At the moment, Tower Hamlets First Group and Labour
:06:09. > :06:10.have 18 seats each. The Conservatives have four. No party
:06:11. > :06:14.has overall control. In other news, a man has appeared in
:06:15. > :06:17.court charged with arson and murder after a 49`year`old man was stabbed
:06:18. > :06:21.in his flat in New Barnet. At first, police thought Antonio Tommaso died
:06:22. > :06:23.in an accidental fire. But a postmortem examination showed he'd
:06:24. > :06:27.been stabbed and that his flat may have been set fire several days
:06:28. > :06:29.later. Daniel Asubo, who's 30 and from Barnet, will appear at the Old
:06:30. > :06:39.Bailey on Wednesday. The Thames Tunnel was once known as
:06:40. > :06:41.the eighth wonder of the world. In Victorian times, hundreds of
:06:42. > :06:45.thousands of Londoners flocked to see it, amazed at how they were able
:06:46. > :06:47.to walk beneath the river. These days it's no longer a tourist
:06:48. > :06:55.attraction. In fact the public rarely get to see it. Charlotte
:06:56. > :06:59.Franks reports. Welcome to the eighth wonder of the world, this is
:07:00. > :07:04.the first tunnel underneath the river anywhere in the world. This
:07:05. > :07:08.underground passage is the birthplace of the tube system, it is
:07:09. > :07:12.the Thames Tunnel which runs between Rotherhithe and Wapping and it was
:07:13. > :07:19.designed and engineered by Marc Brunel and his son, Isambard. It
:07:20. > :07:24.opened in 1843 with the screams of excitement and delight of 50,000
:07:25. > :07:29.visitors. Built originally for horse and carts, the tunnel was to be an
:07:30. > :07:34.alternative to the already overcrowded River Thames, but access
:07:35. > :07:37.was too difficult for anything other than pedestrians so it soon became
:07:38. > :07:46.more than just a means of getting from a to B. This was the world's
:07:47. > :07:54.first underwater banquet hall, shopping parade and fairground.
:07:55. > :07:57.Business men and women used the structure of the tunnel to their
:07:58. > :08:04.advantage. These archways were shops, selling hundreds of items to
:08:05. > :08:08.people walking north and south. They bought trophies ` after all you
:08:09. > :08:12.would need proof that you had ventured beneath the River Thames.
:08:13. > :08:16.It was a great feat of engineering, no one believed it could be made. It
:08:17. > :08:22.was the first shield driven tunnel in the world but the process was
:08:23. > :08:27.risky. Brunel came up with the idea of what a tunnelling shield, it had
:08:28. > :08:32.workers in cells and they would do to our shifts and would have to come
:08:33. > :08:36.off because the gas was so much they were almost collapsing. It is now
:08:37. > :08:41.used by London overground trains carrying over a million passengers
:08:42. > :08:45.every day, and a structure that people once thought was impossible
:08:46. > :08:47.has left an important legacy. Now the weather with Georgina
:08:48. > :08:56.Burnett. What a way to finish off the bank
:08:57. > :09:00.holiday weekend and it is not looking too much better for the rest
:09:01. > :09:06.of the week. We hold onto that showery rain tonight, quite a lot of
:09:07. > :09:12.cloud around and underneath that, a fairly mild night with temperatures
:09:13. > :09:16.only down to around 11 Celsius. We have rain pushing into the east
:09:17. > :09:21.coast this time so we will have some showers spilling over from that in
:09:22. > :09:26.eastern parts of London in particular. A cloudy day tomorrow,
:09:27. > :09:33.but the best of the sunshine will be in the afternoon if there is any at
:09:34. > :09:36.all, and that is when we will see temperatures up to 16 Celsius. Where
:09:37. > :09:44.we hold on to the cloud, as you can see at Saint James Park, only 12
:09:45. > :09:51.Celsius. We have a wet and cloudy week ahead, the temperatures will be
:09:52. > :09:54.up in the high teens but only if we get sunny spells. Starting to look
:09:55. > :09:57.better by the weekend. That's it. I'll be back later during the ten
:09:58. > :09:59.o'clock news, but for now from everyone on the team have a lovely
:10:00. > :10:14.evening. Goodbye. Good evening. If I were to conduct a
:10:15. > :10:19.straw poll about the weather events today, I suspect we would get a
:10:20. > :10:24.split decision. There were significant differences around, we
:10:25. > :10:27.have sunshine and some warmth, but also this cloud and rain coming up
:10:28. > :10:33.through the Channel into the north of England. On top of that, some
:10:34. > :10:40.showers in the north-west, some of them thundery from Northern Ireland
:10:41. > :10:41.and Scotland, so a real eclectic mix. This will drift away over
