:00:00. > :00:14.at the papers over on the BBC City Hall has given the

:00:15. > :00:19.Metropolitan Police permission to go ahead and buy three water cannon

:00:20. > :00:22.for use on the capital's streets. The decision comes

:00:23. > :00:25.despite the fact that final approval for their use would need to be given

:00:26. > :00:28.by the Home Secretary. They've never been used

:00:29. > :00:30.on mainland Britain before. Our Home Affairs Correspondent,

:00:31. > :00:35.Guy Smith reports. Some see them as a military

:00:36. > :00:37.weapon that can potentially The Met, though, says it needs water

:00:38. > :00:45.cannon to control violent disorder. And today,

:00:46. > :00:47.London's Mayor gave the go`ahead to But critics say Boris Johnson

:00:48. > :00:52.should not be pre`empting the Home Even the Met's own report

:00:53. > :01:01.after the 2011 riots said that water cannon would not have been effective

:01:02. > :01:05.or practical. It is no substitute for

:01:06. > :01:10.a properly resourced police force. Since the last general election,

:01:11. > :01:12.we've seen over 5,000 police Only recently,

:01:13. > :01:22.20 out of 25 London Assembly members This is not the tool to catch

:01:23. > :01:28.breakaway rioting units. Isn't this the thin edge

:01:29. > :01:33.of the wedge between crossing that I have to say I'd be most

:01:34. > :01:50.unhappy to see us go that way. But he changed his mind

:01:51. > :01:52.earlier this year. If it's something

:01:53. > :01:54.the police believe is operationally necessary, I think it's very

:01:55. > :01:58.difficult for us as policymakers to say no, that is not a tool you

:01:59. > :02:04.should have your disposal. City Hall says

:02:05. > :02:07.the second`hand machines are only on New ones would cost more

:02:08. > :02:16.than three times that. The Met welcomes the Mayor's

:02:17. > :02:18.decision and stresses they will only be used if consent is given

:02:19. > :02:22.by the Home Secretary. Policing officials say there is no

:02:23. > :02:26.intelligence there will be violence over coming months but if water

:02:27. > :02:30.cannon is to be of value, then it's A major investigation has been

:02:31. > :02:39.launched to catch a gang of thieves who have been stealing

:02:40. > :02:42.ticket machines across North London They used angle grinders

:02:43. > :02:45.and pick axes to prize open British Transport Police say they've

:02:46. > :02:50.caused more than ?100,000 worth Police have revealed that

:02:51. > :02:56.a man jailed for life for stabbing another man to death

:02:57. > :03:00.in the West End 40 years ago has Robert Donovan left Ford Open Prison

:03:01. > :03:06.on day release in June 2010 and didn't return, He had been

:03:07. > :03:10.sentenced for the murder in 1974. This follows a series

:03:11. > :03:12.of incidents last month in which high`profile prisoners went

:03:13. > :03:18.on the run from open prisons. Thousands of taxi drivers are

:03:19. > :03:21.expected to bring traffic to a standstill tomorrow afternoon in a

:03:22. > :03:23.protest over an internet`based firm The row is over protecting

:03:24. > :03:29.their exclusive right to charge Let's cross to Chris Rogers

:03:30. > :03:45.who's got more details. Up to 12,000 cab`drivers hope to

:03:46. > :03:49.bring the streets of central London to a standstill at 2pm tomorrow. The

:03:50. > :03:55.protesters over Transport for London's decision to allow UBER, an

:03:56. > :04:01.online minicab service, to use a type of meter system. You can

:04:02. > :04:08.download a UBER app onto your phone and use it to book one of their

:04:09. > :04:10.drivers. There are 3000 licensed already in the capital but instead

:04:11. > :04:15.of being charged normal flat rate for a journey, you are charged for

:04:16. > :04:20.distance and time, a meter appears on the screen of your mobile phone.

:04:21. > :04:24.Back cab`drivers say the use of metres is exclusive to them by law

:04:25. > :04:28.and say tomorrow's protest is about passengers getting value for money.

:04:29. > :04:30.This is a very difficult city to get about

:04:31. > :04:35.But when you haven't got that knowledge and to follow Google Maps,

:04:36. > :04:39.The reason why cab drivers are unhappy is the silence from TfL.

:04:40. > :04:41.The silence is just deafening at the moment regarding the Uber.

:04:42. > :04:44.Really we look at it as they should be helping us,

:04:45. > :04:48.backing us up regarding this, and we're getting no help from them.

:04:49. > :04:56.All cab drivers now have been pushed into this position.

:04:57. > :05:02.The Met police are not happy either and told BBC London they plan to

:05:03. > :05:08.stop the protest within an hour because the haven't contacted them

:05:09. > :05:10.to discuss conditions and a route for the protest.

:05:11. > :05:12.We'd have to consider placing conditions on this demonstration.

:05:13. > :05:15.As it's a procession, we would be looking at time

:05:16. > :05:18.and duration in order to minimise disruption to the rest of London.

:05:19. > :05:20.And if the protesting taxi drivers don't abide to those conditions,

:05:21. > :05:25.We would consider taking action because it's an offence not to

:05:26. > :05:27.comply with any conditions placed on a procession of this sort.

:05:28. > :05:36.Potentially it could result in arrest.

:05:37. > :05:41.The organisers of tomorrow's black cab protest to save they have been

:05:42. > :05:45.treated like criminals by the Met police and say they have tried to

:05:46. > :05:49.contact them to discuss tomorrow's plans for their protest. Meanwhile,

:05:50. > :05:54.TfL say they hope to settle a dispute over the use of the type of

:05:55. > :05:56.meter scheme UBER are using it in the High Court later this year.

:05:57. > :05:59.Chris, many thanks. Andy Murray is back at Queen's Club

:06:00. > :06:02.tomorrow where he'll be defending Unfortunately it was a second round

:06:03. > :06:05.defeat for Londoner James Ward. The British number three seed lost

:06:06. > :06:08.in straight sets 7`5, 6`3 to the Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov,

:06:09. > :06:15.who's ranked 13th in the world. Time

:06:16. > :06:18.for me to wish you a very goodnight and hand you over to Georgina

:06:19. > :06:37.Burnett for a look at the weather. Fairly cloudy but with high

:06:38. > :06:42.temperatures tomorrow. With that, comes the very high pollen cancer

:06:43. > :06:45.hay fever sufferers beware. For tonight we start to lose the

:06:46. > :06:51.south`westerly breeze we've had over the last few hours. Clear night

:06:52. > :06:55.altogether. Fairly mild but not assume it assume it as it has been

:06:56. > :07:00.recently with temperatures down to 9`10. A little cooler than last

:07:01. > :07:05.night. For tomorrow, lots of sunny skies. Cloud comes and goes

:07:06. > :07:10.throughout the day. Pretty much starts to thin out, though, as we

:07:11. > :07:15.head towards the end of the day. Some late sunshine, a light breeze

:07:16. > :07:20.as well. Temperatures, 22`23dC. Warmer than today. And we see those

:07:21. > :07:25.temperatures gradually rising through the week, as well. The

:07:26. > :07:29.outlook is looking dry, looking sunny, and may even be that we have

:07:30. > :07:31.the highest temperature of the year so far on Friday. We will have to

:07:32. > :07:39.wait and see for that. wait and see for that. Now the

:07:40. > :07:43.National forecast. Hello. The thunderstorms and bumbling around at

:07:53. > :08:00.going summer. Today has been another in a long line of days. Of course,

:08:01. > :08:07.these big showers and storms. But we are about to get a break. High

:08:08. > :08:12.pressure is about to build into the UK, settling the weather down. That

:08:13. > :08:16.means an end for now to the downpours. Not only will it be warm

:08:17. > :08:20.but I think we will have dry weather for time, too. There are some heavy

:08:21. > :08:27.showers around at the moment, though. Northern Scotland,

:08:28. > :08:28.north-west England and Wales. Some of these will continue well into the
