:00:00. > :00:00.children. That's all from the BBC News. We can now join the ndws teams

:00:00. > :00:07.where you are. Concerns are raised over

:00:08. > :00:10.the possible Islamification of a primary school where four governors

:00:11. > :00:13.have resigned over what thex The Department for Education says it

:00:14. > :00:25.will investigate any allegations Also tonight, an inquest begins

:00:26. > :00:29.into the death of a mother whose shooting during a police rahd

:00:30. > :00:34.sparked the 1985 Brixton riots. Revealed,

:00:35. > :00:36.the proposal to build a ?600 million Rock legends the Who announce

:00:37. > :00:51.a 50th anniversary tour. Good evening

:00:52. > :01:09.and welcome to the programmd. First tonight concerns over possible

:01:10. > :01:11.religious extremism at a school BBC London has learned that the

:01:12. > :01:15.council has information concerning the possible Islamification of

:01:16. > :01:18.Kobi Nazrul Primary school. A number of governors have resigned

:01:19. > :01:20.over what they describe The Department for Education

:01:21. > :01:24.has told us it will investigate It follows the so`called

:01:25. > :01:27.Trojan Horse plot in Birmingham in which a number of schools were

:01:28. > :01:31.the target of an alleged takeover David Cameron once chose Kobi Nazrul

:01:32. > :01:49.as the backdrop to deliver plans for Tower Hamlets council is already

:01:50. > :01:53.trying to remove the entire governing body over

:01:54. > :01:56.an alarming slip in standards. Now BBC London understands

:01:57. > :01:58.information has being received raising concerns over Islamhc

:01:59. > :02:03.extremists at the school. After the events in Birmingham,

:02:04. > :02:06.we asked every single London council to tell us of any tip`offs they ve

:02:07. > :02:09.received about any of their schools. We asked for any details

:02:10. > :02:12.of any alleged attempt by Islamic extremists to infiltrate anx school

:02:13. > :02:15.or try and influence Tower Hamlets confirmed it was

:02:16. > :02:21.in possession of relevant information, a document,

:02:22. > :02:24.but so far has refused to show it But we understand the inforlation

:02:25. > :02:31.does indeed relate to Kobi Nazrul. Four of the 15 governors

:02:32. > :02:34.of the school have now resigned This man is one of them

:02:35. > :02:37.and says he was not invited to meetings and was alarmed

:02:38. > :02:40.at the amount of long`serving staff Some of the staff were

:02:41. > :02:44.at the school for over a decade And

:02:45. > :02:47.for them to suddenly walk away from Obviously I don't know what happened

:02:48. > :02:51.in terms of the management from the top layer but therd's no

:02:52. > :02:55.other conclusion you could reach. There must have been

:02:56. > :02:57.a reason why they resigned. It must be what happened

:02:58. > :03:00.at the school and the way the school Results have gone from 82% of pupils

:03:01. > :03:06.gaining good sats to 40%, the worst Parents also have concerns

:03:07. > :03:14.at the secrecy. We questioned the governors

:03:15. > :03:17.and we asked them the reasons why But to this day we haven't had

:03:18. > :03:25.a valid answer basically. Behind our backs, they tried to

:03:26. > :03:30.put the school into an acaddmy. There was no consultation

:03:31. > :03:34.with parents. How do I know

:03:35. > :03:45.about my grandchildren? None of the parents we spokd to have

:03:46. > :03:53.seen any overt extremism but we now know one of the governors

:03:54. > :03:58.is a member of an Islamist group. Successive prime ministers have

:03:59. > :04:02.considered banning the group. It has in the past infiltrated

:04:03. > :04:05.and recruited at universitids and remains under constant review

:04:06. > :04:09.by the Home Office. A local MP says the governmdnt

:04:10. > :04:15.should have acted sooner. The government and the Secrdtary

:04:16. > :04:18.of State has sat on its hands and, in the meantime, children are

:04:19. > :04:20.suffering, parents are suffdring, parent governors have raised alarm

:04:21. > :04:24.bells that in the governing board they've been in a minority so

:04:25. > :04:30.this school needs action quhckly. The Department for Education told us

:04:31. > :04:33.if they find evidence of extremism They are also awaiting the result

:04:34. > :04:39.of an emergency OFSTED inspdction. That may shed light

:04:40. > :04:42.on what's really happening inside because, at the moment,

:04:43. > :04:44.the wider community is clearly not To clarify, these are concerns

:04:45. > :04:59.at the moment about governance not necessarily about what's behng

:05:00. > :05:05.taught in the school? That's right. Tower Hamlets are

:05:06. > :05:08.concern about the school from way back in 2012 when the headm`ster was

:05:09. > :05:13.hired after the council 's wishes. They objected strongly. The result

:05:14. > :05:18.of dropped dramatically and other tried to intervene and calldd off ``

:05:19. > :05:21.Ofsted in. What to make of this letter is lacking a possibld

:05:22. > :05:26.concerns about extremism? It's hard to tell, really. Yes, this lan seems

:05:27. > :05:30.to be a member of this extrdmist group. He did not deny it to us on

:05:31. > :05:34.the phone today, but should it matter in the day`to`day running of

:05:35. > :05:36.the school? We don't know if it does any effect at all full stop

:05:37. > :05:41.certainly nothing in our investigation so far suggests only

:05:42. > :05:45.kind of overhead attempt at this. This culture of secrecy does not

:05:46. > :05:47.helpful for many parents we spoke to said they have been shot out and

:05:48. > :05:50.then there is a clandestine attempt by the governors to turn thd school

:05:51. > :05:56.into an academy out of council control with freedom of what they

:05:57. > :06:02.teach. It doesn't really help. Poor governance and results is the real

:06:03. > :06:05.key here. The Ofsted findings will be very interesting. Certainly, I

:06:06. > :06:08.would be surprised given evdrything I've seen of that was not some kind

:06:09. > :06:28.of intervention by the government very soon.

:06:29. > :06:36.Why transport bosses say thd Tour de France will be good for London.

:06:37. > :06:43.I will have the forecast for you from SWR 19.

:06:44. > :06:46.An inquest into the death of a mother whose shooting sparked

:06:47. > :06:49.Cherry Groce was shot by armed officers

:06:50. > :06:52.during a police raid 29 years ago and died of her injuries in 201 .

:06:53. > :06:55.Her son told the inquest how he was left confused, shocked

:06:56. > :07:00.Our Home Affairs Corresponddnt, Guy Smith reports.

:07:01. > :07:03.He was only 11`years`old when he saw his mother lying

:07:04. > :07:06.on the floor wounded at the family home in Brixton.

:07:07. > :07:09.She had been shot by an armed police officer.

:07:10. > :07:13.Today he told a jury he was screaming and shouting repe`tedly,

:07:14. > :07:20.He said he then heard her s`ying ?I can't feel my legs, I can't breathe,

:07:21. > :07:25.He said he ?became hysteric`l when the police officer pointed a

:07:26. > :07:31.Cherry Groce was left paralxsed and confined to a wheelchair.

:07:32. > :07:37.She died from her injuries hn 2 11, 26 years after the shooting.

:07:38. > :07:41.A shooting that provoked a riot in Brixton and raised questhons

:07:42. > :07:44.at the time about policing the black colmunity

:07:45. > :07:50.Police had been looking for her son, Michael Groce,

:07:51. > :07:56.He was suspected of carrying out an armed robbery in Hertfordshire.

:07:57. > :08:00.On a Thursday in September 0985 at an address in London, he pointed

:08:01. > :08:05.a shotgun at a Hertfordshird police officer and then disappeared.

:08:06. > :08:07.The next day, armed officers from The Met carried

:08:08. > :08:14.It wasn't until early the ndxt morning that they targeted the

:08:15. > :08:20.The jury heard that there wdre serious deficiencies in how

:08:21. > :08:25.There was a lack of information about the layout of propertx

:08:26. > :08:30.An independent review by West Yorkshire Police found grave

:08:31. > :08:35.risks were created for both the public and the police.

:08:36. > :08:41.It has taken the family of Cherry Groce

:08:42. > :08:45.the past three years since her death to secure legal aid so that they can

:08:46. > :08:58.Tomorrow, the jury is due to hear from the officer who shot hdr.

:08:59. > :09:01.Four men have been arrested in connection with the rape

:09:02. > :09:05.The girl was attacked by a group of men in the woods near

:09:06. > :09:11.A 19`year`old and a 20`year`old remain in custody

:09:12. > :09:13.A teenager who was stabbed to death as he walked home

:09:14. > :09:16.from a friend's house in Harlesden over the weekend has been n`med

:09:17. > :09:21.The 19`year`old was chased by two men wearing black hooded tops

:09:22. > :09:26.He was taken to hospital but died hours later.

:09:27. > :09:30.An eight day strike by power workers on London Underground will go ahead

:09:31. > :09:33.after talks to resolve a row over pensions failed.

:09:34. > :09:39.Members of the RMT union and Unite are due to walk out

:09:40. > :09:43.Transport bosses say it'll have no impact on Tube services.

:09:44. > :09:50.But unions warn there will be disruption.

:09:51. > :09:55.Eric Pickles has accused in East London council of holding up an

:09:56. > :09:59.investigation into how the borough spends taxpayers money. He says

:10:00. > :10:02.Tower Hamlets has been slow in providing key information about its

:10:03. > :10:12.administration. The council says it wants the investigation finhshed as

:10:13. > :10:14.quickly as possible. What started as a BBC investigation into spdnding

:10:15. > :10:18.Tower Hamlets quickly becamd an investigation ordered by thd

:10:19. > :10:20.government. In April, it sent a team of accountants from

:10:21. > :10:23.PricewaterhouseCoopers into the council to look at how the borough

:10:24. > :10:27.had been spending its money. They were due to report back to

:10:28. > :10:31.government today. Instead, there was this announcement by the man who

:10:32. > :10:37.ordered that investigation. The council has considerably delayed the

:10:38. > :10:41.investigation by delaying the provision of key information or not

:10:42. > :10:45.providing it at all. This is not acceptable and I am consequdntly

:10:46. > :10:49.extending the period for thdm to report and the costs will bd met by

:10:50. > :10:53.the council. Whether the cotncil likes it or not, this investigation

:10:54. > :10:56.will be thorough and comprehensive. In letters of the government, the

:10:57. > :10:58.ordered it was claimed their investigation was held up the

:10:59. > :11:02.documents they had requested had been delivered late to them, not

:11:03. > :11:05.delivered at all. In a lettdr sent to the council today, the government

:11:06. > :11:10.says Tower Hamlets will be footing the bill for the process. It will

:11:11. > :11:14.cost around ?1 million. We don't want this to descend into a slanging

:11:15. > :11:17.match. It is important for public confidence we get to the bottom of

:11:18. > :11:23.these allegations and the sooner the better. I worry about the expense of

:11:24. > :11:27.all this but clearly there hs still a cloud hanging over Tower Hamlets

:11:28. > :11:32.politics. And I think public confidence requires us to gdt a move

:11:33. > :11:36.on, get to the bottom of it, leave no stone unturned, and restore that

:11:37. > :11:39.confidence. The council is considering a judicial revidw of the

:11:40. > :11:42.governments decision to award an investigation. It expected the Mayor

:11:43. > :11:58.will make a decision on that tomorrow. Today it said:

:11:59. > :12:05.Tomorrow the focus will switch from spending two elections with a from

:12:06. > :12:08.the electoral commission looking the count at Tower Hamlets in M`y, which

:12:09. > :12:12.ended up taking five days to complete. It is expected to be

:12:13. > :12:20.highly critical of the borotgh s planning for the polls. Offhcers

:12:21. > :12:23.investigating an illegal rave in Croydon have released six ndw images

:12:24. > :12:26.of people they would like to speak to. The men are not connectdd to the

:12:27. > :12:30.death which occurred after the raid at a disused sorting office but they

:12:31. > :12:34.could help police with other lines of enquiry regarding violence and

:12:35. > :12:38.drugs. So far, 16 people have been arrested in connection with the

:12:39. > :12:42.event. Thousands of passengdrs are still waiting to get the luggage

:12:43. > :12:46.back after an IT failure at terminal five. Heath Row bosses say the

:12:47. > :12:48.problem has now been fixed. At Gatwick, passengers suffered long

:12:49. > :12:55.delays over the weekend which the airport blamed on staff shortages at

:12:56. > :12:59.the handling company. A company that has traded 20,000 tonne towdr of

:13:00. > :13:01.waste just a few yards from homes in Orpington has had its application to

:13:02. > :13:06.bring more rubbish to the shte blocked by the High Court. The

:13:07. > :13:10.company, which collect wastd from across the south`east, has barely

:13:11. > :13:15.been ordered to remove all flammable material from the site. In dxactly

:13:16. > :13:20.one week, the largest annual sporting event in the world comes to

:13:21. > :13:24.London. Organisers are expecting around 1 million spectators to

:13:25. > :13:29.welcome the cyclists. It is cost Transport for London ?6 million to

:13:30. > :13:36.get it. So is it worth it? Where in the capital can you see it?

:13:37. > :13:38.While Yorkshire has been gohng Tour de France crazy,

:13:39. > :13:40.in the capital preparations here have been more low`key.

:13:41. > :13:46.So far, most of the focus h`s been on Yorkshire and the north

:13:47. > :13:50.And the Tour is a commercial organisation and so cities `nd towns

:13:51. > :13:54.along the route have to pay for the privilege to hold the Tour.

:13:55. > :14:01.Last time the Tour was here was in 2007,

:14:02. > :14:04.and an official survey afterwards showed that nearly half of those who

:14:05. > :14:13.Transport for London has pahd ?6 million to host this Tour.

:14:14. > :14:16.All the cycling events we h`ve, there are people who watch ht

:14:17. > :14:21.They think, "I can try this cycling as well "

:14:22. > :14:24.Maybe not as fast as some of the elite riders,

:14:25. > :14:29.When we had the Tour de France in 2007, we had an increase in cycling.

:14:30. > :14:33.Cycling is now part of our mainstream transport.

:14:34. > :14:35.I think that after the Tour de France,

:14:36. > :14:41.Stage Three of the Tour starts in Cambridge and makes its way

:14:42. > :14:46.It will finish on the Mall `t about 4pm on Monday.

:14:47. > :14:49.While there has been critichsm of the number

:14:50. > :14:53.of events being held in London, City Hall says the tour is different

:14:54. > :14:56.The Government has calculatdd it's worth 100 million right

:14:57. > :15:02.About a third of that will be in London, if not a bit mord.

:15:03. > :15:05.There will certainly be a bdnefit for the hotels and tourism hndustry.

:15:06. > :15:07.But the real advantage is the pictures

:15:08. > :15:14.People will say to themselvds, "I looked at that at the Olxmpics,

:15:15. > :15:16.it looked interesting, I'm seeing it again now,

:15:17. > :15:22.The Tour will cause disrupthon on many roads and motorists have

:15:23. > :15:25.been warned they will have to move their cars from the main rottes

:15:26. > :15:27.Nonetheless, the authorities believe a mhllion

:15:28. > :15:51.A new bridge connecting Thalesmead Tibetan is being headed by the

:15:52. > :15:56.London chamber of commerce, who claim it would bring huge bdnefits

:15:57. > :16:02.to the area. Let's find out more from Victoria in east London. Bring

:16:03. > :16:08.us up to date. I'm standing just down the road next

:16:09. > :16:11.to the river from gallows rdach and uninterrupted stretch of thd

:16:12. > :16:15.Thames, rather attractive at this time of the evening. But a lot of

:16:16. > :16:19.people think this bit is rather wasted and that there should be a

:16:20. > :16:23.new crossing over the Thames. This has been discussed for around 3

:16:24. > :16:32.years. The nearest bridge crossing to hear is actually at Tower

:16:33. > :16:35.Bridge. They are saying that for a growing city, for a populathon that

:16:36. > :16:39.is moving east across London, there needs to be a crossing and the time

:16:40. > :16:43.is now. This is being driven by the London chamber of commerce, who have

:16:44. > :16:48.released these architectural plans. They say if this bridge werd to get

:16:49. > :16:52.the go`ahead, it would create around ?55 million economic benefits every

:16:53. > :16:57.single year. It would lead to around 18,000 more jobs, as this area was

:16:58. > :17:12.better connected. These plans have been released but they are just

:17:13. > :17:14.plans at the moment. But already we've heard people not parthcularly

:17:15. > :17:17.pleased at this idea, not ldast the Green Party, who say another bridge

:17:18. > :17:19.and more traffic would just bring more pollution and that's the wrong

:17:20. > :17:23.way forward for London. Will it get the go`ahead?

:17:24. > :17:26.If recent history is anything to go by, it's not going to get the

:17:27. > :17:31.go`ahead in the near future. In 2007, there was a judicial review

:17:32. > :17:37.into the last plans for a bridge here. That got rejected bec`use

:17:38. > :17:40.there were around 4500 objections to the plans. Supporters of thd latest

:17:41. > :17:44.campaign say times have changed we've seen the whole area around

:17:45. > :17:48.East London change, particularly since the Olympic Games. New

:17:49. > :17:52.buildings springing up everxwhere, new business, new foreign money

:17:53. > :17:57.coming into the area. If thd area is to continue to grow, there has to be

:17:58. > :18:01.this crossing. They say that local people will now support this. In

:18:02. > :18:05.2008, Boris Johnson also rejected these plans, took away around ? 00

:18:06. > :18:08.million of funding, so I thhnk it's fair to say there isn't going to be

:18:09. > :18:18.an agreement tomorrow, and probably not in the near future. Towdr

:18:19. > :18:24.Bridge, one of the most famous bridges in the world, is celebrating

:18:25. > :18:27.its 120th anniversary. It w`s opened in 1894, after eight years of

:18:28. > :18:30.construction, built as a response to the growth of East London and

:18:31. > :18:32.increasing demand to cross the river. The bridge was built at a

:18:33. > :18:37.cost of just over ?1 million. Roger Daltrey is calling it "the

:18:38. > :18:40.beginning of the long goodbxe". Rock veterans The Who have announced a

:18:41. > :18:43.series of 50th anniversary shows. The tour, which starts in November,

:18:44. > :18:46.will end at the O2 Arena in Greenwich in December. With more

:18:47. > :18:49.details here's our entertainment # I was born with a plastic spoon

:18:50. > :18:53.in my mouth... With an intimate a cappella set

:18:54. > :19:00.and a chat with the press, Who members Roger Daltrey

:19:01. > :19:03.and Pete Townshend take to the stage of Ronnie Scott's to announce

:19:04. > :19:05.their 50th anniversary tour. But this exciting news

:19:06. > :19:08.for fans is bittersweet, as it marks the fact that these ageing rockers

:19:09. > :19:11.plan to wind things down a little. I don't think we are

:19:12. > :19:14.going to stop playing. We've always been available

:19:15. > :19:16.for charity shows and events, one`offs, but the touring shde

:19:17. > :19:20.of it is going to have to come to I should say that not all of

:19:21. > :19:37.The Who's history has been pleasant It is great just to have thhs

:19:38. > :19:45.partnership with Roger, we share The Who and what's good and bad

:19:46. > :19:49.about it but today it's all good. It was here in May 1969 that The Who

:19:50. > :19:53.premiered Pete Townshend's rock opera, Tommy, so it seems only

:19:54. > :19:56.fitting that the band should return to this West End venue to announce

:19:57. > :20:01.their long goodbye. Tommy was called pretentious

:20:02. > :20:04.by journalists with no imaghnation. But in actual fact we were

:20:05. > :20:17.encouraged to be pretentious. Pete Townsend probably is working

:20:18. > :20:27.for ever on material, it wotld seem. Equally, Roger, he loves totring,

:20:28. > :20:30.singing and playing. I think there's plenty more

:20:31. > :20:37.to come from both of them. Both have confirmed plans to record

:20:38. > :21:08.so it's certainly not all over yet. The sun has been in and out of the

:21:09. > :21:11.clouds today. It is one for the vegetation, the grass is certainly

:21:12. > :21:16.going to be green after the showers we've had here. They've popped up

:21:17. > :21:20.across the rest of London and the Home Counties here and therd. Still

:21:21. > :21:24.spitting at it this evening. There's a terrific shower over the

:21:25. > :21:29.southeastern part of the M24 that's just gone through. Let's take a look
