:00:00. > :00:15.Now, on BBC One, it's time for the news where you are.

:00:16. > :00:18.Ahmad. So, after spending years evading the

:00:19. > :00:24.question, Boris Johnson has finally given us the answer. He will try to

:00:25. > :00:26.stand for Parliament next year while still being Mayor of London.

:00:27. > :00:29.Although the Prime Minister has welcomed the news, bookies have

:00:30. > :00:34.tonight cut the odds for Mr Johnson to one day lead the Conservative

:00:35. > :00:37.Party. But does the Mayor's plan for Parliament compromise his commitment

:00:38. > :00:45.to London? Here's our political editor, Tim Donovan. It was the best

:00:46. > :00:46.job around. It needed full attention. There were huge

:00:47. > :00:52.challenges to deal with. around. It needed full attention.

:00:53. > :00:56.There were huge challenges to deal with. Yet today official ` it is not

:00:57. > :00:58.a job on its own that he is satisfied doing. A lots of people

:00:59. > :01:02.will see this as a gigantic U`turn by the Mayor, because so often he's

:01:03. > :01:06.played down or even appeared to rule out standing as an MP at this

:01:07. > :01:10.general election. Well, he's going for it. We are not totally

:01:11. > :01:15.surprised, but he will pay a price in terms of some people saying, when

:01:16. > :01:20.can we believe him? He said he wanted a star player back...

:01:21. > :01:29.Whenever Boris wants to, he'll get a warm welcome from me. The PM has

:01:30. > :01:32.taken the Mayor at his word. Boris has been committed to Londoners and

:01:33. > :01:37.London, and that's been demonstrated by the plans he's released around

:01:38. > :01:41.infrastructure, the work he's doing in rebuilding the economy, and

:01:42. > :01:44.making sure that crime continues to come down and the investment in the

:01:45. > :01:49.city. And he is devoted to Londoners now and will be for the next few

:01:50. > :01:54.years. But his opponents describe the move as like deserting London,

:01:55. > :01:59.leaving incomplete the work started on signature policies like cycling,

:02:00. > :02:04.aviation and policing reform. Perhaps most pressing of all,

:02:05. > :02:10.addressing the acute smorj of housing. There is no question that

:02:11. > :02:16.from here on in Boris won't be giving London attention. The we are

:02:17. > :02:19.in the middle of a housing crisis, rents twice the level of that

:02:20. > :02:25.outside of London. There is no question that London will suffer.

:02:26. > :02:28.Boris has used the last six years promoting himself and his photo

:02:29. > :02:33.opportunities. It's the Mayor who is elected in 2016 who is going to have

:02:34. > :02:38.to move quickly to get stuff off the ground or London will be very

:02:39. > :02:42.scratchy and difficult. And wasn't one likely problem highlighted by

:02:43. > :02:47.the events today, speculation about his future eclipsing a big report on

:02:48. > :02:52.London's economy and Europe done by his own senior economist. Is this

:02:53. > :02:56.him putting his own personal career ahead of London in London. Was a

:02:57. > :03:01.secondary consideration? It seems clear to me that the Mayor has had a

:03:02. > :03:05.very successful time in London. He clearly has important plans in place

:03:06. > :03:10.for London for the rest of his time as Mayor up until 2016. He also has

:03:11. > :03:15.a strong team around him at City Hall, so he seems clear to me that

:03:16. > :03:20.Boris is focused on London. It is a signal that he's leaving before the

:03:21. > :03:23.job's done? It is a work in motion if you are Mayor of London. It is

:03:24. > :03:28.object positioning the London economy not just now but for the

:03:29. > :03:32.long`term. It is positioning himself for the longer term.

:03:33. > :03:36.The next question to ask is where will Boris Johnson stand for MP?

:03:37. > :03:39.Well, Uxbridge and South Ruislip is one of the most likely places, so

:03:40. > :03:47.our political correspondent, Karl Mercer, went there to gauge the

:03:48. > :03:55.reaction of local people. For 15 years the Randall name has dominated

:03:56. > :04:01.Uxbridge town centre, for 125 years. John Randall is stepping aside, the

:04:02. > :04:07.vacancy an opportunity for one of the MPs. When John stood down we

:04:08. > :04:11.brought these out for Boris. I nearly took 'em out of the window

:04:12. > :04:16.but this morning it has kicked off again. The one that is really

:04:17. > :04:23.selling at the moment is Uxbridge, better than it sounds, big being up

:04:24. > :04:28.the local area. Boris will have to get the bus. There's no tubes here

:04:29. > :04:34.for the next fortnight. How about this local estate agent, if he is

:04:35. > :04:39.thinking of moving in, or maybe not. He will have to win over the loexts

:04:40. > :04:43.The idea of Boris Johnson terrifies me, so poor Uxbridge. He's great,

:04:44. > :04:48.good fun, listens to people and gets the job done. I love him. Surely

:04:49. > :04:54.he's got to give up being Mayor to be an MP? No he doesn't. Really? I

:04:55. > :04:57.would be surprised if he could do both properly. John Randall

:04:58. > :05:03.disagrees and denies he was nudged aside for blonde ambition. It was

:05:04. > :05:07.purely my own decision. One of the reasons I decided to announce it

:05:08. > :05:11.sooner rather than later was that I wanted the speculation out of the

:05:12. > :05:16.way. The people of Uxbridge will know by mid September if the Mayor

:05:17. > :05:20.will be the Tory candidate here the next election.

:05:21. > :05:23.Let's talk to our political editor Tim Donovan. How difficult a job is

:05:24. > :05:29.this for Boris Johnson to pull off without denting his popularity with

:05:30. > :05:33.Londoners? I suppose it had been predicted for such a long time,

:05:34. > :05:36.particularly at Westminster, that it wasn't altogether unexpected and

:05:37. > :05:40.that may have softened impact. He's shown today that he's very much in

:05:41. > :05:45.five, as he once admitted, of having his cake and eating it. For many

:05:46. > :05:49.people that will be a problem. The business organisation, London

:05:50. > :05:55.Chamber of Commerce, unusually direct today. It said it was a bad

:05:56. > :06:02.decision and we needed a Mayor that can give London his un`Dwighted

:06:03. > :06:12.attention. Some, his undivided attention. Is Uxbridge the only

:06:13. > :06:15.realistic option to him? I think so. Uxbridge presents its own problems.

:06:16. > :06:22.Take an issue like aviation. Aviation. Boris Johnson wants, the

:06:23. > :06:25.logic of his plans is to close Heathrow. The local Tory council

:06:26. > :06:30.wants to keep it open because of the jobs. You can see the hurdles ahead.

:06:31. > :06:39.That could make an interesting discussion in any selection

:06:40. > :06:45.There's lots of speculation about what's happening for the weekend.

:06:46. > :06:50.Ahead of that we've got rain. Tomorrow it looks like a lovely day

:06:51. > :06:53.for many of us. We've got a few sharp showers near Luton at the

:06:54. > :06:57.moment. These should ease, but not without the risk of a shower

:06:58. > :07:06.tonight. With quiet light winds we could have mist and fog as well. A

:07:07. > :07:12.comfortable night for sleeping. Dry and bright tomorrow with sunshine.

:07:13. > :07:16.Temperatures down. 24`25 still possible in the strong sunshine. Is

:07:17. > :07:21.a dry night tomorrow, but there's more rain heading our way. This next

:07:22. > :07:27.weather system comes in on Friday afternoon. There's a yellow warning

:07:28. > :07:33.from the Met Office for that. Saturday is quieter and then Tomasz

:07:34. > :07:34.will tell you more as we look ahead for the potential

:07:35. > :07:39.will tell you more as we look ahead for the potential of something

:07:40. > :07:43.stormy to head our way. Good evening to you. There's a lot

:07:44. > :07:50.of detail to cover in tonight's weather update, so let's snap to it.

:07:51. > :07:54.This is tomorrow. Lots of warm sunshine. There'll be cloud around

:07:55. > :07:59.with the possibility of one or two showers. In terms of the here and

:08:00. > :08:05.now it is quiet and tranquil out there. Light winds by the early

:08:06. > :08:06.hours of Thursday. Mist forming here and there. Not especially
