:00:00. > :00:00.That is all from the BBC News at 6.00pm. So goodbye from me and now

:00:00. > :00:08.we can join the BBC News teams where you are.

:00:09. > :00:12.Former boxing promoter, Frank Maloney, who guided Lennox Lewis to

:00:13. > :00:24.I thought maybe I could earn enough money to disappear and lead a new

:00:25. > :00:27.life as a female. We're at one of London's most

:00:28. > :00:30.famous boxing clubs for reaction How London's chief police officer

:00:31. > :00:34.made his first arrest as the Commissioner of the Met

:00:35. > :00:40.by coming to the aid of a cabbie. I saw the police and they came to my

:00:41. > :00:46.car and followed the guy. Plus the terrifying moment a mother

:00:47. > :00:49.jumped on the tracks to save her And transforming east London's

:00:50. > :00:53.landscape ` plans are revealed As the top policeman in the country,

:00:54. > :01:16.Sir Bernard Hogan Howe is used to crackdowns on criminals

:01:17. > :01:18.and arrest rates. But today he was actually called

:01:19. > :01:21.upon to make an arrest himself, his first as the

:01:22. > :01:23.Met Police Commissioner. It happened during

:01:24. > :01:25.an interview he was doing with our Victoria Hollins is in Tottenham

:01:26. > :01:29.where it happened. Victoria, an eventful day

:01:30. > :01:41.for the Commissioner? It has been a pretty action field

:01:42. > :01:47.adventurous day for Sir Bernard Hogan`Howe. He was on a walkabout

:01:48. > :01:52.from our radio station. They were on the high road in Tottenham when a

:01:53. > :01:59.minicab driver pulled up asking for help. He said that four men had got

:02:00. > :02:05.out of his car without paying and ?20,000 from him. Well one police

:02:06. > :02:08.officer headed in the direction of one suspect and Sir Bernard

:02:09. > :02:13.Hogan`Howe jumped into the nearest car and headed off to try to find

:02:14. > :02:17.another suspect. When he was involved in the arrest of a

:02:18. > :02:26.19`year`old. Earlier I spoke to the Callum Driver concerned and to the

:02:27. > :02:33.television and radio presenter. They all ran away and took my money as

:02:34. > :02:40.well. What happened then? I saw the police, I asked the police to come

:02:41. > :02:46.and arrest the guys. They came to my car and caught two of them. Who

:02:47. > :02:52.would have guessed, walking down the road? I think he was happy to get

:02:53. > :02:57.his hands dirty. And subsequently to get back in a police car and drive

:02:58. > :03:00.after the second. He was happy to go to the station and took pleasure in

:03:01. > :03:10.telling me about writing up his notes. And is this the first time he

:03:11. > :03:15.has made an arrest as Commissioner? That is right. But of course he has

:03:16. > :03:22.arrested a lot of people in his career, spanning several forces

:03:23. > :03:27.since 1979. But this is the first arrest that he is made in seven

:03:28. > :03:39.years. The important thing is that I made an arrest as police officer but

:03:40. > :03:45.never as Commissioner. I have been very slack! But today we put that

:03:46. > :03:50.right. The cab driver is less pleased because he is still waiting

:03:51. > :03:53.for his money. The Metropolitan Police will be pleased, this is the

:03:54. > :03:57.kind of public relations that many organisations can only dream of. But

:03:58. > :04:03.social media has been interesting. Some people asking does he still

:04:04. > :04:07.know how to do the full portion. And from one colleague of his, simply

:04:08. > :04:15.saying, still got it! Lots more to come,

:04:16. > :04:18.including inflation busting pay rises for new recruits in the City.

:04:19. > :04:20.A sign of growing confidence in the economy or just good news

:04:21. > :04:31.for bankers? A man from Crawley who beat

:04:32. > :04:33.a homeless man to death, and then took photos of his victim's

:04:34. > :04:36.body on his mobile phone, Daniel Palmer, who's 24,

:04:37. > :04:40.has been told he'll serve a minimum of 15 years in prison

:04:41. > :04:52.for the murder of Joao Esteves. This CCTV shows Daniel Palmer

:04:53. > :04:55.leaving Joao Esteves to death. He beat him into a state of

:04:56. > :05:01.unconsciousness in an alleyway. As the 45 build Portuguese man lay

:05:02. > :05:05.dying Daniel Palmer took a video and photographs on his mobile phone and

:05:06. > :05:09.sent some of them to friends. Mr Palmer clearly went there with the

:05:10. > :05:13.intention of assaulting someone on the trophy photographs were his way

:05:14. > :05:20.of recording that to show his friends, to show what he had done.

:05:21. > :05:23.Joao Esteves had only been in the country for four days. He

:05:24. > :05:27.encountered Daniel Palmer is the 24`year`old made his way home from a

:05:28. > :05:31.night of heavy drinking. Daniel Palmer in his defence said the

:05:32. > :05:35.photographs on the mobile phone had been taken by accident while he had

:05:36. > :05:40.been trying to defend themselves from attack by Joao Esteves. He told

:05:41. > :05:44.the court Joao Esteves had tried to rob him at knife`point. The judge

:05:45. > :05:50.said this story was a web of lies and deceit. In sentencing him to

:05:51. > :05:56.life in prison the judge told him, this was a quite dreadful crime. You

:05:57. > :05:59.killed a sad and vulnerable man. You have not shown one flicker of

:06:00. > :06:03.remorse. It took pleasure in the results of your hand's work on why

:06:04. > :06:08.else would you take the photos you did. Palmer walked away from his

:06:09. > :06:12.victim, lied to the fleece and wash the clothes he had been wearing on

:06:13. > :06:17.the night of the murder. A man who has lived most of his adult life

:06:18. > :06:27.involved in violence and threatening behaviour is now behind bars.

:06:28. > :06:29.Pictures have been released of the heart stopping moment

:06:30. > :06:32.when a child in a pushchair was blown onto the tube

:06:33. > :06:37.Within moments a woman ran to pull the child to safety before a train

:06:38. > :06:41.Katherine Carpenter joins me now and what exactly does the CCTV show us?

:06:42. > :06:47.For any parent this is the stuff of nightmares. But its transport police

:06:48. > :06:53.have released the footage taken last month. It shows a man leaving a

:06:54. > :06:56.child in a pushchair at the bottom of some steps. He then goes back

:06:57. > :07:00.upstairs to fetch another pushchair and a gust of wind drag the previous

:07:01. > :07:05.pushchair onto the tracks. Then you see a woman who appears to be the

:07:06. > :07:10.mother of the boy jumping onto the tracks after him. You can see that

:07:11. > :07:16.from a different angle there pitching onto the tracks. Then a

:07:17. > :07:20.woman following shortly afterwards. She retrieves the pushchair very

:07:21. > :07:23.quickly, throws it back up and then goes back onto the tracks herself.

:07:24. > :07:27.We will see that in a couple of seconds. And she retrieves some bits

:07:28. > :07:31.that seemed to fallen from the bottom. What you cannot see is

:07:32. > :07:37.another tube train approaching just seconds away. She really gets back

:07:38. > :07:44.onto the platform with seconds to spare. And that the police are

:07:45. > :07:50.trying to trace the parents of the child with Mac that is right. It

:07:51. > :07:55.appears there was just one other person on the platform at that time.

:07:56. > :07:59.It is transport police said there were no staff on the platform at the

:08:00. > :08:02.time either. They want to trace the family because they want to check

:08:03. > :08:06.that the child was not hurt in any way. According to the absolute

:08:07. > :08:09.letter of the law the woman was trespassing on the track at the

:08:10. > :08:11.time. But British Transport Police did say they have released the

:08:12. > :08:15.pictures of the warning to others about the danger of high wind in the

:08:16. > :08:16.tunnels and because they do have a genuine concern for the family

:08:17. > :08:31.involved. A murder investigation has begun

:08:32. > :08:33.in south`east London after a 26`year`old man was stabbed

:08:34. > :08:35.to death. It happened last night on

:08:36. > :08:37.Eltham Road in Lee. Police believe the victim may have

:08:38. > :08:40.been involved in an argument with The former leader of a notorious

:08:41. > :08:46.London criminal gang, Terry Adams, has been ordered to pay back more

:08:47. > :08:49.than ?650,000 from his crime days. Mr Adams argued in court that he was

:08:50. > :08:53.too poor to pay the money, and was However a judge rejected this,

:08:54. > :08:57.saying it was likely he still had considerable assets, which he was

:08:58. > :09:00.using to fund a luxury lifestyle. A man has died after taking part

:09:01. > :09:02.in yesterday's 36 year`old, Kris Cook collapsed

:09:03. > :09:05.at Newlands Corner during the Surrey leg of the route

:09:06. > :09:08.and died from a cardiac arrest. He was raising money for

:09:09. > :09:10.Woking Hospice and his donations to his Just Giving

:09:11. > :09:19.page have now passed ?10,000. He made his name and a successful

:09:20. > :09:22.career in the male`dominated, macho Now the former promoter,

:09:23. > :09:26.Frank Maloney, who is best known for guiding Lennox Lewis to a world

:09:27. > :09:29.title ` is living as a woman. The 61`year`old from Peckham is

:09:30. > :09:32.now known as Kellie, and has described how leading a secret

:09:33. > :09:49.life nearly drove her to suicide. Born and bred in Peckham. Frank

:09:50. > :09:55.Maloney is best known to sports fans as the man who led Lennox Lewis to

:09:56. > :10:05.the top of the boxing world. This girl supports Lennox Lewis. But

:10:06. > :10:11.in the last 24 hours the 61`year`old has revealed a new life as a woman

:10:12. > :10:16.called Kellie. In an interview with the Mirror newspaper she discusses

:10:17. > :10:20.her transgender struggle and suicide attempt after feeling trapped in the

:10:21. > :10:26.wrong body. She credits boxing for giving her a focus during the dark

:10:27. > :10:33.times. Deep down I thought, maybe I can earn enough money that one day I

:10:34. > :10:38.can disappear and live a completely new life as a female and no one will

:10:39. > :10:41.ever bother me. Because in sport, once you come out of sport were soon

:10:42. > :10:46.forgotten. When asked how she thought the boxing world would

:10:47. > :10:52.react... I do not know. I cannot comment. They will make their own

:10:53. > :10:59.decision. Today in south London there was surprise and support. I

:11:00. > :11:06.thought it was a wind`up. Sunday morning, in the Daily Mirror. It is

:11:07. > :11:13.2014 and if you want to be who you want to be, just be it. Maloney was

:11:14. > :11:20.also active in politics, standing as the good candidate for London mayor

:11:21. > :11:23.in 2004. The party defended Maloney after refusing to campaign in Camden

:11:24. > :11:28.saying they were too many gay people. In 2010 there was an

:11:29. > :11:32.unsuccessful attempt to stand as you could candidate for barking. Today

:11:33. > :11:37.the announcement was welcomed by the transgender community. It is

:11:38. > :11:42.brilliant. It is part of an enormous great thing. No rule that says that

:11:43. > :11:51.boxing is any more or less likely to turn up someone in transition than a

:11:52. > :11:57.hairdresser. Well we have heard messages of support from across the

:11:58. > :12:00.boxing community today? There has been shocked as well but it is

:12:01. > :12:05.wonderful to see the support that Kellie has received. And no higher

:12:06. > :12:08.support in the boxing world as tributes came from all over the

:12:09. > :12:12.place including Lennox Lewis, a close friend of course of Kellie. He

:12:13. > :12:18.said he could only imagine what a difficult decision but had been. And

:12:19. > :12:25.if this is what brings true happiness, then so be it. Also BBC

:12:26. > :12:27.boxing commentator wrote on Twitter, Frank Maloney is possibly the

:12:28. > :12:37.bravest person in boxing. How can anybody give him stick? You have to

:12:38. > :12:40.just smile and say, go on, girl. We also have to say that Frank Maloney

:12:41. > :12:45.actually left the boxing world just last October. And then on top of

:12:46. > :12:50.that she's halfway through the process now of her agenda

:12:51. > :12:53.transformation. She plans to have surgery next year. A great response

:12:54. > :12:55.but no doubt there will be more comment in the days and months that

:12:56. > :12:59.follow. Heathrow and Gatwick airports today

:13:00. > :13:01.both reported record numbers of The news comes just

:13:02. > :13:05.a few weeks before the Howard Davies Commission publishes

:13:06. > :13:23.its recommendations on which Some are just going, others on their

:13:24. > :13:27.way home. It is holiday season and for the two biggest airport in

:13:28. > :13:32.London it has never been easier. At Heathrow July has seen the biggest

:13:33. > :13:37.day in its history. The world economy is growing and Heathrow is

:13:38. > :13:42.connected to that. And at Gatwick the numbers also keep going up. In

:13:43. > :13:48.the last five years we have been the fastest`growing London airport. The

:13:49. > :13:53.statistics tell the story. Almost 7 million passengers at Heathrow last

:13:54. > :13:57.month. Gatwick, 4.1 million. Next month the airports commission is set

:13:58. > :14:00.to announce his short list for new runways. If Heathrow is constrained

:14:01. > 0:07:05then we are losing out as a
