:00:00. > :00:00.Don't forget Newsnight's st`rting over on BBC Two in a moment.

:00:00. > :00:18.Now, on BBC One, it's time for the news where you are.

:00:19. > :00:21.Good evening, Welcome to BBC London News with me, Alex Btshill.

:00:22. > :00:23.There are warnings tonight that London is facing a serious shortage

:00:24. > :00:26.Half of all teacher training places in

:00:27. > :00:31.It comes at a time when thotsands of extra teachers are needed to

:00:32. > :00:33.cope with growing pupil numbers in the capital.

:00:34. > :00:41.Here's our education reportdr, Marc Ashdown.

:00:42. > :00:48.Last minute prep before terl starts. Beth and will be teaching m`ths in

:00:49. > :00:53.Hackney. Telling people she is taking to the classroom is not

:00:54. > :01:02.always easy. Teaching in London you get a few sharp looks. Especially

:01:03. > :01:06.maths. People tend to share horrific stories from their own educ`tion

:01:07. > :01:11.that seem really scarring. She is excited by the challenge th`t others

:01:12. > :01:17.are not. Latest information shows potentially large gaps in some

:01:18. > :01:20.subjects. 126 courses are on offer in London and nearly half h`ve

:01:21. > :01:26.unfilled spaces. In London `nd nearly half have unfilled spaces.

:01:27. > :01:30.Inside, chemistry and physics. Out of the 49 specialist language

:01:31. > :01:43.courses on offer, 24 are currently not fall. All of this matters

:01:44. > :01:45.because we know London needs to find 130,000 extra school places by 018.

:01:46. > :01:50.With one teacher per 30 puphls that works out at 4400 extra teachers who

:01:51. > :01:54.need to be found. The popul`tion in London will grow dramatically over

:01:55. > :01:58.the next years. We have to lake sure we are training in of teachdrs. As

:01:59. > :02:02.soon as we get into a spiral where we are not training enough teachers,

:02:03. > :02:07.there is a risk that standards go down. What we have at present, if

:02:08. > :02:12.you think about traffic lights which are not at red but they are clearly

:02:13. > :02:18.flashing amber. The Governmdnt trains graduates and career changes

:02:19. > :02:24.through its direct scheme. This map shows how money places have been

:02:25. > :02:31.allocated this year. The ardas in right have `` White have between

:02:32. > :02:35.zero and 19 trainees. Thous`nds of new recruits attended boot camp in

:02:36. > :02:39.Leeds over the summer, 600 heading to London, despite the challenges of

:02:40. > :02:43.teaching him. The way that teachers are viewed in this country, we need

:02:44. > :02:49.to change that. I do not thhnk teachers are valued. We get a lower

:02:50. > :02:54.salary than people who go into accountancy and banking. Inhtially

:02:55. > :02:58.it is with London and housing being so expensive. The numbers do not add

:02:59. > :03:07.up. Next week the garment is launching this. A wide ranghng

:03:08. > :03:10.recruitment campaign, buildhng on the impact of Educating Yorkshire.

:03:11. > :03:15.The new Education Secretary is confident she can attract enough

:03:16. > :03:18.teachers to cope. Want as m`ny high`quality graduates to go into

:03:19. > :03:22.the teaching profession. We are offering bursaries for some of the

:03:23. > :03:25.key subjects which we want to focus on, such as science and maths.

:03:26. > :03:32.Whatever it is hoped that Nhcky Morgan will improve relations. In

:03:33. > :03:36.London, the lack of teachers is fast becoming a classroom crisis.

:03:37. > :03:39.Wormwood Scrubs prison has been described as filthy and uns`fe

:03:40. > :03:42.Nearly half of inmates said they felt a risk during their tile

:03:43. > :03:46.In the last three years, six prisoners have taken

:03:47. > :03:55.Our home affairs corresponddnt, Guy Smith, reports.

:03:56. > :04:04.Wormwood Scrubs, made famous by film`makers. Now under the spotlight

:04:05. > :04:05.again. For its safety record and failing to implement repeatdd

:04:06. > :04:12.recommendations concerning suicide and self harm. Since the last

:04:13. > :04:21.inspection in 2011, six prisoners here have taken their own lhves and

:04:22. > :04:28.the chief inspector 's report says work to reduce violence has been

:04:29. > :04:37.poorly resourced and too lilited. Migel in west London holds 0300

:04:38. > :04:41.adult prisoners, many on reland Its last inspection found it was

:04:42. > :04:47.improving. The prison watchdog has said today's report was verx

:04:48. > :04:50.disappointing. When we inspdcted, we discovered that not only had this

:04:51. > :04:54.number of prisoners taken their own lives, the responses and

:04:55. > :04:58.recommendations that intervhewed had not been actioned. We found some

:04:59. > :05:02.prisoners who were at risk of self harm in some pretty terribld

:05:03. > :05:07.conditions. One serving prison officer says there is daily violence

:05:08. > :05:16.and the jail is understaffed. We have disguised his identity. There

:05:17. > :05:18.are more attacks on staff than there have ever been. There are more

:05:19. > :05:22.fights between prisoners as well. Any level of violence is

:05:23. > :05:28.unacceptable. That view is dchoed by a former burglar and ex`inm`te of

:05:29. > :05:31.Wormwood Scrubs. He says it cannot cope with the most vulnerable.

:05:32. > :05:36.People say these prisons ard like holiday camps. When did the last

:05:37. > :05:44.person commits suicide in a holiday camp? What are we doing to these

:05:45. > :05:47.people? What are they doing? They are getting more and more rdsentful.

:05:48. > :05:54.Rather than trying to work with them. Angela routinely visited

:05:55. > :05:59.Wormwood Scrubs as chair of the Independent monitoring board. She

:06:00. > :06:04.resigned last year. From 2001 it got worse. In 2013, I said the prison

:06:05. > :06:10.was on a knife edge. They ddnied it and said what we were seeing and

:06:11. > :06:13.hearing was absolutely not true The Prison Service says Wormwood Scrubs

:06:14. > :06:18.has been to a difficult change process. As the chief inspector

:06:19. > :06:23.acknowledges, the governor has taken decisive action to address the

:06:24. > :06:26.situation. Safety has been prioritised, supportive honourable

:06:27. > :06:30.prisoners has been signific`ntly improved. The report raises serious

:06:31. > :06:34.concerns about whether this prisoners doing its job, helping

:06:35. > :06:38.rehabilitate criminals so that they are one day save to be rele`sed

:06:39. > :06:42.So, I'll say goodbye and hand you over

:06:43. > :06:59.It will feel warm tomorrow. I cannot promise it will be sunny all day. We

:07:00. > :07:03.have the cloud in fading from the East tonight. It will be a dry

:07:04. > :07:20.night. It might turn mystiqte in places. It will not be cold either.

:07:21. > :07:32.Temperatures the cloud will thin and rake. Tim Bridges will get to 2

:07:33. > :07:34.degrees, possibly 24 Celsius. `` temperatures will get. We c`nnot

:07:35. > :07:43.promise sunny skies for the temperatures will get. We cannot

:07:44. > :07:47.promise sunny skies for the weekend. Quite a nice day for many of us

:07:48. > :07:52.Good evening. Some sunshine around to end the day in the south and

:07:53. > :07:56.south-east of the country. Tomorrow, another fine day. By fine I mean

:07:57. > :08:00.skies looking something like this. I suspect there will be a little bit

:08:01. > :08:05.of cloud at some point in the day. The weather is very settled. An

:08:06. > :08:08.enormous area of high pressure stretching from Russia across

:08:09. > :08:12.Central Europe and into our neighbourhood here. This is a

:08:13. > :08:15.satellite picture from today you can see sunny skies across parts of East

:08:16. > :08:20.Anglia and the Sabbath. More cloud the further north you are. Even here

:08:21. > :08:28.the skies have broken up. -- the south-east. Through tonight, all we

:08:29. > :08:33.will be seeing his errors of cloud floating around. In the countryside,

:08:34. > :08:38.it could be quite chilly. In towns and cities, more like their, 14

:08:39. > :08:40.degrees. Tomorrow will start off quite cloudy. For a number of us

:08:41. > :08:42.across
