:00:09. > :00:18.Good evening from BBC London News. I'm Riz Lateef.
:00:19. > :00:21.Police investigating the disappearance of 14`year`old Alice
:00:22. > :00:25.Gross have named a man they want to question in the hunt to find her.
:00:26. > :00:28.The teenager from Hanwell wdnt missing almost three weeks `go.
:00:29. > :00:32.Detectives want to speak to 41`year`old Arnis Zalkalns, who was
:00:33. > :00:36.last seen at his home in Ealing on Wednesday. Police say he's not a
:00:37. > :00:44.suspect. It comes ahead of `n appeal on the BBC's Crimewatch programme
:00:45. > :00:47.later tonight. Alex Bushill reports. Tonight a mainly new development.
:00:48. > :00:53.This is the man the police want to trace. He is Arnis Zalkalns. He s
:00:54. > :01:00.Latvian, 41 years old, a falily man and a bird by profession. Hd too
:01:01. > :01:06.would cycle to work with a friend along the same towpath Alicd was
:01:07. > :01:10.seen walking along on these fuzzy CCTV pictures. She disappeared three
:01:11. > :01:17.weeks ago. He went missing dxactly a week later. Given the route taken by
:01:18. > :01:21.Arnis to and fro work and ghven the route that Alice took on th`t
:01:22. > :01:27.particular day, it is highlx possible that he may have come
:01:28. > :01:31.across her, cycled past her and may have vital information in rdlation
:01:32. > :01:34.to her movements on that dax. I m asking Arnis Zalkalns firstly, if he
:01:35. > :01:39.is listening to this, to cole forward and speak to our detectives.
:01:40. > :01:45.The police also learned tod`y this rucksack she was seen carryhng was
:01:46. > :01:49.seen by a couple at 8.15pm that evening discarded by the river
:01:50. > :01:54.Brent. That's significant, `s it narrows the window to less than four
:01:55. > :02:00.hours. This latest police appeal comes as another is made by Alice's
:02:01. > :02:05.family on tonight's edition of Crimewatch. There's not a moment of
:02:06. > :02:09.the day that you don't think about Alice and where she is, what might
:02:10. > :02:14.have happened or why she might have gone missing. It is impossible to
:02:15. > :02:18.describe what that pain feels like. The last two weeks have been
:02:19. > :02:23.heartbreaking but we want hdr to know, please, Alice, if you are out
:02:24. > :02:28.there, come home. If anyone has any information at all about her
:02:29. > :02:32.movements on that day or about her whereabouts now, I would re`lly
:02:33. > :02:36.plead with them to come forward to the police and get her home. That's
:02:37. > :02:41.where she belongs. She needs to be here with us. Which is why there is
:02:42. > :02:46.still hope in Hanwell she whll return home safe. Safe. Tonhght the
:02:47. > :02:54.police believe that man, Arnis Zalkalns, may hold key. And you can
:02:55. > :02:56.see more on the search for lissing teenager Alice Gross on Crilewatch
:02:57. > :02:59.shortly at 10.40pm after thd news here on BBC One.
:03:00. > :03:02.From today millions of passdngers can pay for their Tube and train
:03:03. > :03:04.journeys in London using a contactless bank card. It's already
:03:05. > :03:07.been introduced on the bus network. Transport bosses believe swhping a
:03:08. > :03:10.credit or debit card on an Oyster reader will make travelling easier.
:03:11. > :03:12.But critics say the system could lead to confusion. Here's otr
:03:13. > :03:21.transport correspondent, Tol Edwards. For the millions of
:03:22. > :03:27.commuters who use the tube `nd the train in London every day there s
:03:28. > :03:34.now another way to pay. Contactless bank cards are now accepted. It will
:03:35. > :03:38.be the same fare as Oyster. Anything that extends payments withott having
:03:39. > :03:44.to carry cash in your pocket is amazing. I am scared if you use
:03:45. > :03:47.contactless you spend money you don't realise how much you `re
:03:48. > :03:52.spending on. That's the biggest thing that puts me off. London is at
:03:53. > :03:56.the forefront of ticketing technology. Bank cards are `lready
:03:57. > :04:00.accepted on the buses. One of the big advantages of using a
:04:01. > :04:06.contactless card over Oyster is that has a weekly cap. That means in
:04:07. > :04:10.effect it is a weekly travelcard. Also the technology is more
:04:11. > :04:17.flexible, so you will start to see it used in phones, and one bank has
:04:18. > :04:24.devised these, wristbands. Transport for London will see savings if more
:04:25. > :04:28.use bank cards. The downsidd is what's being called card cl`sh,
:04:29. > :04:33.where the wrong card in your wallet is charged. That could mean a
:04:34. > :04:39.maximum fare of ?8.40. What customers need to do to avohd card
:04:40. > :04:47.clash is only present the c`rd you intend to use for travel. If the
:04:48. > :04:52.event you will get card clash, we will attempt to correct it
:04:53. > :04:57.automatically, if not get in touch with us. If there are too m`ny
:04:58. > :05:02.incidences of the card clash or charged for journeys people didn't
:05:03. > :05:08.make, the take`up might not work, but if it goes smoothly it lay be a
:05:09. > :05:20.big thing. The banks insist the system is secure. We have sden tiny
:05:21. > :05:26.fraud losses on contactless cards. They don't even bear speaking about.
:05:27. > :05:31.People should been comfortable using it. There are concerns that could be
:05:32. > :05:36.the beginning of the end of Oyster Cards. It is expecting huge numbers
:05:37. > :05:39.of commuters to switch to using bank cards.
:05:40. > :05:43.Some of London's universitids have been ranked among the best hn the
:05:44. > :05:45.world. Latest ratings show two in the top five. Imperial Colldge was
:05:46. > :05:48.second, which means it's now considered better than Harv`rd in
:05:49. > :05:54.the US. University College London was ranked joint fifth. The capital
:05:55. > :06:02.has more universities in thd top 100 than any other city in the world.
:06:03. > :06:06.Being headquartered here in London and having our main activithes in
:06:07. > :06:11.London gives us a fantastic base. Not least because there are other
:06:12. > :06:15.good academic institutions here we partner with and compete with.
:06:16. > :06:18.Time for me to wish you goodnight and hand you over to Georgina
:06:19. > :06:22.Burnett for a look at the wdather. Hello. We continue with this fine
:06:23. > :06:28.weather certainly for tomorrow. We've got a cloudy start but more
:06:29. > :06:32.sunny spells to look forward to by the afternoon. Tonight, quite a lot
:06:33. > :06:39.of cloud keeping that warmth in It could be on the muggy side, with
:06:40. > :06:43.temperatures between 12 and Celsius We'll probably have more fog
:06:44. > :06:47.developing but it's not as dxtensive as last night. Mist and fog patches
:06:48. > :06:52.for tomorrow morning. These are blown away by the breeze in the
:06:53. > :07:00.morning. By the afternoon e we are starting to see sunshine. It could
:07:01. > :07:05.be warmer tomorrow, with highs of 24 or Celsi Staying dry but into
:07:06. > :07:10.Thursday and Friday, slightly different. Thursday, still looking
:07:11. > :07:15.like a pleasant day. More of a foggy start. More sunshine, and pdrhaps
:07:16. > :07:20.when temperatures peak. There's a risk of showers. By Friday, they are
:07:21. > :07:26.looking pretty heavy and perhaps thundery. Let's look at the outlook.
:07:27. > :07:31.Temperatures rising and falling over the next few days. But I will leave
:07:32. > :07:32.you now with Darren Bett and the national weather.
:07:33. > :07:57.you now with Darren Bett and the national weather.
:07:58. > :08:06.This cloud looks worse than it is. Glitching the extreme south-west
:08:07. > :08:10.overnight. Ahead of it we've got an easterly air flow. That low cloud
:08:11. > :08:15.that never cleared the North Sea coasts is pushing through the gaps,
:08:16. > :08:19.running on to high ground. We'll have clearer skies further west but
:08:20. > :08:23.the low cloud is more extensive leading to mist and fog over hills
:08:24. > :08:29.and coasts in the east, where we could have drizzle. Another warm ni
