:00:13. > :00:14.Good evening and welcome to tonight's BBC London

:00:15. > :00:30.Metropolitan Police detectives say they're examining an area of

:00:31. > :00:33.parkland near to where Alicd Gross was last seen as part of thd ongoing

:00:34. > :00:45.There was also an investigation into the Metropolitan Police's initial

:00:46. > :00:48.investigation into her disappearance.

:00:49. > :00:50.It's been described as the biggest search operation

:00:51. > :00:55.But alongside it now is a rdview into how the Met first investigated

:00:56. > :00:58.the disappearance of Alice Gross, and also into apparent delaxs in

:00:59. > :01:02.identifying the main suspect, Arnis Zalkalns, a convicted murderer.

:01:03. > :01:04.As a consequence of criticism that we have hdard

:01:05. > :01:09.in the media and other placds that we have undertaken a review of, we

:01:10. > :01:17.If there is learning then wd will take that learning away and we will

:01:18. > :01:22.Pictures of Alice growing up, released today as part

:01:23. > :01:26.of an appeal four weeks on from when the 14`year`old schoolgirl

:01:27. > :01:33.No`one really knows what's happened to her.

:01:34. > :01:47.Her family also released thhs poignant video `

:01:48. > :01:53.the teenager not long ago rdhearsing for a solo performance.

:01:54. > :02:01.Here in West London, the colmunity reaction has been astonishing.

:02:02. > :02:05.Everywhere you look, ribbons, the colour yellow, a sign

:02:06. > :02:13.Seeing these search units and things like that down

:02:14. > :02:17.by the hospital and you see them dredging it up and you're jtst there

:02:18. > :02:23.It's been awful, what's happened, and obviously with young chhldren

:02:24. > :02:28.The sense of community has been fantastic, as you can see, so it's

:02:29. > :02:35.The Met Police today reconstructed Alice's last known movements,

:02:36. > :02:39.hoping there'll be a breakthrough, her family saying this afternoon

:02:40. > :02:51.As detectives tonight examine a park in Hanwell near to where Alhce Gross

:02:52. > :02:54.was last seen, Scotland Yard officers are also in the Latvian

:02:55. > :02:57.capital, Riga, working with the authorities there to gather more

:02:58. > :03:10.Our correspondent Jenny Hill is in Riga and sent this report.

:03:11. > :03:18.The joint investigation between the British and Latvian police teams

:03:19. > :03:21.here in Riga is firmly focused on finding Arnis Zalkalns, as well as

:03:22. > :03:26.gathering as much information about as possible, and to that end, we

:03:27. > :03:30.understand British detectivds have spoken to a former girlfriend of his

:03:31. > :03:36.and to do that they had to travel for several hours to a town in the

:03:37. > :03:41.West of Latvia. Latvia is a country where Arnis Zalkalns still has

:03:42. > :03:45.family and acquaintances and is also the country where, 16 years ago you

:03:46. > :03:50.was jailed for the murder of his wife. Detectives say it is possible

:03:51. > :03:53.he has come here. They say ht is difficult because they understand he

:03:54. > :03:58.does not have his passport. Nevertheless, the search here goes

:03:59. > :04:02.on. The Latvian police authorities have said to us that if thex find

:04:03. > :04:05.him, they are not able to arrest. They see as far as they are

:04:06. > :04:10.concerned, he has not committed a crime. There is, as you pointed out,

:04:11. > :04:16.no European arrest warrant for him. And they emphasise this is ` guest

:04:17. > :04:20.`` an investigation into two missing people. But tonight, here in

:04:21. > :04:23.Latvia, the search for Arnis Zalkalns goes on.

:04:24. > :04:26.Dogs are being trained to fhght in a playground in Enfield.

:04:27. > :04:28.The local authority says it now fears for the safety

:04:29. > :04:31.of children playing in any park where the dogs might be.

:04:32. > :04:34.A warning that viewers might find some images in Emilia Papadopoulos'

:04:35. > :04:48.Two dogs pitted against each other with no way out. Dogfighting isn't

:04:49. > :04:52.just cruel, it is illegal, `nd it is happening in London. This

:04:53. > :04:56.children's adventure playground only opened in August. But the epuipment

:04:57. > :05:00.has already been replaced three times and that is because fhghting

:05:01. > :05:07.dogs are being trained here at night, forced to hang from swings

:05:08. > :05:12.and trees by their jaws. Yot can see the effect the fighting dogs have

:05:13. > :05:15.had on this child's seat. It is a swing seat and they have chdwed

:05:16. > :05:24.right through to the hard rtbber at the edge, write to the core. ``

:05:25. > :05:28.right. The problem is now these dogs will associate a child's pl`yground

:05:29. > :05:33.with where they get trained, so is there a worry that could be a

:05:34. > :05:39.problem in the day here? Absolutely. Where they are conditioned to CH

:05:40. > :05:43.over's playground as a placd they are trained, Enfield Council takes

:05:44. > :05:47.this very seriously. What I would say to them is, stop being lorons.

:05:48. > :05:53.Don't trained dogs in children's playground. To think that they could

:05:54. > :05:57.come while you are playing with your daughter... It would put me off

:05:58. > :06:02.going to that playground. You don't want to think they are doing that

:06:03. > :06:06.and training their dogs to fight. Dogfighting is still a big problem

:06:07. > :06:11.in London and while most right `` fights take place behind closed

:06:12. > :06:17.doors in garages, the implications for the public and charities like

:06:18. > :06:21.Battersea Dogs Home are hugd. They don't necessarily happen in

:06:22. > :06:26.daylight. We need people to literally give us information. The

:06:27. > :06:32.covert nature of dogfighting makes it hard to find reliable st`tistics

:06:33. > :06:34.but animal charities say incidents involving dangerous dogs ard

:06:35. > :06:39.growing. Enfield Council will now install CCTV in the area and

:06:40. > :06:42.increase police park patrols. They also want the public to be vigilant.

:06:43. > :06:45.That's it for now from me, but let's find out what

:06:46. > :06:58.Still feeling really warm dtring the day?

:06:59. > :07:02.Yes row. The odd spot of rahn is possible but it should brighten up

:07:03. > :07:06.quite nicely into the afternoon The cloud is coming down from the North

:07:07. > :07:10.and most places will be dry. Possibly grey over some of the hills

:07:11. > :07:15.with fog possible but a nothceable breeze and we keep the tempdratures

:07:16. > :07:20.at 13 or 14. A mild start to the day. Most of us will be dry with

:07:21. > :07:26.just the odd spot of rain possible. Brighter spells developed as the

:07:27. > :07:30.cloud thins and brakes. A noticeable breeze. Looking good onto the

:07:31. > :07:32.weekend as well. This is breeze. Looking good onto the

:07:33. > :07:41.weekend as well. This is the summary. Now the national outlook.

:07:42. > :07:45.Good evening. There is rain in the forecast overnight, but even so

:07:46. > :07:50.September is heading to be one of the driest on record for many of us.

:07:51. > :07:56.Today's weather front gave a lot of cloud rather than rain. But where we

:07:57. > :08:01.have the sunshine, it has been warm. And today, for eastern Scotland our

:08:02. > :08:09.warmest September day so far. 2 degrees at St Andrews. But it will

:08:10. > :08:12.turn remarkably cooler. These are our first autumnal gales blowing in

:08:13. > :08:18.across Scotland and Northern Ireland with gusty winds. Severe gales

:08:19. > :08:22.possibly for Shetland. Those hold the temperature up, though. Some

:08:23. > :08:23.misty, drizzly conditions in the South mean a much
