:01:31. > :01:47.

:01:47. > :01:51.Good afternoon. Welcome to the BBC News at One. In the last hour, it's

:01:51. > :01:56.been confirmed that meat in school dinners in Lancashire has tested

:01:56. > :02:00.positive for horse DNA. Cottage pie, which was delivered to 47 schools

:02:00. > :02:05.in the county, has now been withdrawn from school kitchens.

:02:05. > :02:09.Lancashire County Council says the amount of horsemeat eaten will have

:02:09. > :02:14.been minute. All head teachers in the county have been alerted. And

:02:14. > :02:18.the Whitbread chain, which supplies food to thousands of pubs, has just

:02:18. > :02:23.revealed that horse DNA has been discovered in some of its meat

:02:23. > :02:28.products. It's also been confirmed that horse DNA has been detected in

:02:28. > :02:30.burgers sold by the Compass group in Ireland. All the latest

:02:30. > :02:35.developments come from our correspondent.

:02:35. > :02:40.This scandal has moved from supermarkets to schools. Within the

:02:40. > :02:45.last hour, samples of cottage pie supplied to schools in Lancashire

:02:45. > :02:48.have been found to contain horse DNA. The council says the amount

:02:49. > :02:53.consumed by children will be minute and the food has been withdrawn

:02:53. > :02:59.from the kitchens. The pub supplier Whitbread has said horsemeat has

:02:59. > :03:02.been found in two of its products. At labs around the country,

:03:02. > :03:08.hundreds of food samples are being tested. Scientists are trying to

:03:08. > :03:11.find out how far the horsemeat contamination has spread.

:03:11. > :03:15.Supermarkets have been removing some meat products from the shelves,

:03:15. > :03:19.but they have been criticised by Downing Street for not doing enough

:03:19. > :03:22.to reassure their customers. Nothing is more important to us...

:03:23. > :03:28.This morning, the boss of one appeared online rather than in

:03:28. > :03:32.front of the media and add cressed his customers directly. We take the

:03:32. > :03:38.trust you place in us very seriously. We work every day to

:03:38. > :03:40.make sure you can and we will continue to work every day.

:03:40. > :03:48.supermarkets know this scandal is damaging them. Some of them have

:03:48. > :03:52.published a letter saying they share their customers' outrage.

:03:52. > :03:55.There are problems when you put all your trust in a multi-national

:03:55. > :04:00.company whose profits come before people. We need to relocallise our

:04:00. > :04:04.food chain so we have local, small- scale farmers selling their produce

:04:04. > :04:10.with local slaughter houses and local butchers. ASDA is the latest

:04:10. > :04:13.of the big chains to take action after horse DNA was found in a

:04:13. > :04:17.bolognese sauce. It is the first time that fresh rather than frozen

:04:17. > :04:22.meat has been found to be contaminated. This is the plant in

:04:22. > :04:26.Bristol which is thought to have supplied ASDA. Shoppers say it is

:04:26. > :04:32.taking too long to get to the bottom of the scandal. We look

:04:32. > :04:42.twice and are avoiding places which we think will have it. Keep away

:04:42. > :04:42.

:04:42. > :04:49.from the frozen meals. Prepare everything yourself. This is a

:04:49. > :04:54.European crisis. According to the French, 13 countries and 28

:04:54. > :04:58.companies could be affected. TRANSLATION: To the British

:04:58. > :05:02.consumers, even though I want to repeat, we are innocent, we are

:05:02. > :05:08.victims, we are not guilty. To them, I want to apologise. I'm very sorry.

:05:08. > :05:12.We never wanted this. Today's test results will give a

:05:12. > :05:16.snapshot of the spread of contaminated meat but not the full

:05:16. > :05:23.picture. It may take several months before we know how all this started

:05:23. > :05:28.and who is to blame. Let's get the latest from Andy Gill

:05:28. > :05:32.who is in Salford. In terms of horsemeat getting into schools now,

:05:32. > :05:37.the products have been withdrawn, but we don't know how much

:05:37. > :05:40.horsemeat might have been eaten or for how long? This came about

:05:40. > :05:44.because Lancashire Council is one of seven local authorities which

:05:44. > :05:48.has its own laboratories to test food. It was testing products

:05:48. > :05:51.already implicated in the horsemeat scandal on behalf of the Food

:05:52. > :05:57.Standards Agency. The council took an independent decision to test its

:05:57. > :06:02.own food that was supplied to its schools. It's confirmed cottage pie

:06:02. > :06:07.sent to 47 schools does have horse DNA in it. The council has also

:06:07. > :06:11.said that any DNA which children may have consumed will have been in

:06:11. > :06:15.minute quantities. The head teachers of all these 47 schools

:06:15. > :06:22.have already been alerted about this. Now, the council website says

:06:22. > :06:30.they supply 55,000 meals to schools across the county during a week.

:06:30. > :06:36.They say that most of the meat is fresh-farm assured from the Fylde

:06:36. > :06:41.coast. They have not been able to tell us who has supplied the

:06:41. > :06:44.cottage pie with the horse DNA for the schools in Lancashire. Thank

:06:44. > :06:48.you, for now. Of course, it is not just this

:06:48. > :06:51.country that's affected by contaminated meat products. 16

:06:51. > :06:54.European countries are dealing with the problem and today in Brussels

:06:54. > :06:59.food safety officials from throughout the EU are meeting to

:06:59. > :07:03.discuss the situation. Let's get the latest from Matthew Price. In

:07:03. > :07:09.fact, I think the meeting might still be going on. What are you

:07:09. > :07:13.hearing there? It is, Jane. I think what they want to do here in

:07:13. > :07:17.Brussels, as in Britain, is to try and get the clearest possible

:07:17. > :07:21.picture of exactly the size and scope of this problem. We do not

:07:21. > :07:25.have a very clear picture at the moment. All that we do know is that

:07:25. > :07:28.it is widespread and it's not just confined to Britain. It is across

:07:28. > :07:32.the EU, it would seem. At that meeting, experts who regularly meet

:07:32. > :07:37.on a monthly basis, they are in emergency sessions at the moment.

:07:37. > :07:42.They are trying to work out the best method for conducting new,

:07:42. > :07:48.quick tests to try and ascertain how much of the food chain in

:07:48. > :07:53.Europe has been affected. Two tests they will be conducting, randomly,

:07:53. > :07:57.across the European Union, in every country of the EU, two tests - one

:07:57. > :08:02.to look for the presence of horse DNA in beef products; the other to

:08:02. > :08:05.look for the presence of the horse painkiller bute in the food chain

:08:05. > :08:09.as well. They are not going to be able to conduct those tests that

:08:09. > :08:15.quickly and get the results that quickly. We are not expecting them

:08:16. > :08:18.to start until March. When they do start, we are not expecting results

:08:18. > :08:23.until mid-April. Only then will we get a clear picture of the extent

:08:23. > :08:26.of this problem. It is clear already that the problem is

:08:26. > :08:31.widespread. Thank you. We will talk more about

:08:31. > :08:34.this story later in the programme. The South African Paralympic

:08:34. > :08:37.Champion, Oscar Pistorius, has appeared in court in Pretoria

:08:37. > :08:41.accused of the murder of his girlfriend. He broke down in tears

:08:41. > :08:46.as he was charged with shooting Reeva Steenkamp at his home

:08:46. > :08:51.yesterday. The prosecution will argue it was a premeditated murder.

:08:51. > :08:57.But his agent says he will be contesting the charge in the

:08:57. > :09:01.strongest possible terms. After a night in a police cell,

:09:01. > :09:07.Oscar Pistorius was driven to court in Pretoria this morning. His face

:09:07. > :09:11.and feelings well hidden for now. The courtroom was packed and very

:09:11. > :09:15.emotional. Oscar Pistorius walked in looking grim-faced but as soon

:09:15. > :09:19.as the prosecutor mentioned "premeditated murder" he broke down,

:09:19. > :09:25.sobbing, his head in his hands. The magistrate asked him if he wanted

:09:25. > :09:29.to sit down. He did so and barely moved for the next 45 minutes,

:09:29. > :09:33.occasionally breaking into more sobs. The man whose sporting

:09:33. > :09:37.achievements have dazzled the world broke down when it was suggested he

:09:37. > :09:43.deliberately killed his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. Friends and family

:09:43. > :09:50.of the dead woman shot yesterday have continued to pay tribute to

:09:50. > :09:54.the former model. I must just say that her future has been cut short,

:09:54. > :10:03.all her dreams have been and what she has accomplished in the past.

:10:03. > :10:07.And the family at the moment are devastated. This case has shocked

:10:07. > :10:12.and bewildered South Africa, an iconic local hero transformed into

:10:12. > :10:18.a murder suspect. I'm so sad. He is my inspiration. I'm disappointed

:10:18. > :10:23.the way things have happened. would know if it was a burglar. In

:10:23. > :10:27.a high-security estate, there is no chance that it was a burglar.

:10:27. > :10:31.decision on whether Oscar Pistorius will be allowed out on bail has

:10:31. > :10:35.been postponed until next week. In the meantime, one of the world's

:10:36. > :10:41.most famous sporting stars will remain behind bars at a local

:10:41. > :10:46.police station. We can get the latest from Andrew

:10:46. > :10:50.now. Really quite chaotic scenes at one point in the court, a sense of

:10:50. > :10:53.the huge shock still within the country? Indeed, it was

:10:53. > :10:57.extraordinary to be in that courtroom. I was standing three

:10:57. > :11:07.yards from Oscar Pistorius and to watch his face and the reactions

:11:07. > :11:11.every time "murder" came up, he crumpled. He sat there as this very

:11:11. > :11:15.lonely figure. All of South Africa, people outside discussing this,

:11:15. > :11:19.wondering could this possibly have been some sort of accident, as

:11:19. > :11:24.Pistorius and his friends insist, or as the police are arguing, as

:11:24. > :11:28.they are building up their case now with forensics going to his house

:11:28. > :11:33.nearby, could this have been some sort of premeditated murder? We are

:11:33. > :11:37.hearing a lot of people now coming out of the woodwork, the mothers of

:11:37. > :11:42.ex-girlfriends saying he did have a violent streak, he often couldn't

:11:42. > :11:46.control that anger, perhaps he couldn't handle the fame, he had

:11:46. > :11:50.some sort of particular enthusiasm for guns. People are putting that

:11:50. > :11:54.altogether and basically this is still a mystery. A lot of people in

:11:54. > :12:00.South Africa starting to wonder whether the golden boy of sport,

:12:00. > :12:04.this local hero, may not prove to be quite such a hero after all.

:12:04. > :12:08.Thank you. Here, the Coronation Street actor

:12:08. > :12:13.Michael Le Vell has been charged with 19 sexual offences including

:12:13. > :12:15.raping a child. The actor, who plays Kevin Webster, is due to

:12:15. > :12:21.appear in court in Manchester at the end of this month. In a

:12:21. > :12:26.statement, he said he is innocent of all charges and will fight them

:12:26. > :12:36.vigorously. Michael Le Vell has played the part

:12:36. > :12:36.

:12:36. > :12:41.of Kevin Webster for 30 years. Kevin John Webster... He is still

:12:41. > :12:46.one of the best-known faces on- screen, as one of the longest-

:12:46. > :12:51.serving cast members of Coronation Street. Today, there was no sign of

:12:51. > :12:55.the actor at his home. He was granted bail late last night after

:12:55. > :13:00.being charged with 19 sexual offences against a girl who is now

:13:00. > :13:07.in her late teens. Under his real name, he faces charges including

:13:07. > :13:12.the rape and indecent assault of a child between 2001 and 2010. The

:13:12. > :13:16.star was first arrested in 2011, in connection with alleged offences

:13:16. > :13:20.against the same child, but no charges were then brought. Now, the

:13:20. > :13:30.Crown Prosecution Service has reviewed the evidence. Alison

:13:30. > :13:44.

:13:44. > :13:49.Having starred in the soap since 1983, the actor will not be

:13:49. > :13:55.involved in new scenes. Coronation Street has filmed here

:13:55. > :13:59.at the Granada Studios. Today, ITV have said that due to the serious

:13:59. > :14:03.nature of the charges against him, Michael Le Vell won't be appearing

:14:03. > :14:11.in the soap whilst legal proceedings are ongoing. Michael Le

:14:11. > :14:16.Vell will appear before magistrates on February 27th.

:14:16. > :14:21.More than 500 people were injured when a meteor shot across the sky

:14:21. > :14:24.in central Russia sending fireballs crashing to earth. Windows were

:14:24. > :14:34.blown out and buildings damaged. It is the first recorded meteor strike

:14:34. > :14:36.

:14:37. > :14:40.of this kind for more than 100 The first thing people notice was a

:14:40. > :14:44.fireball flying through the sky, and dozens of video cameras

:14:44. > :14:50.captured the same event, what seems to have been a meteor burning up in

:14:50. > :14:54.the atmosphere, leaving behind it a white trail. TRANSLATION: Eyes on

:14:54. > :14:59.object moving through the sky, then there was a flash. -- I saw. Then

:14:59. > :15:05.we saw a trace as if from a rocket, followed by an explosion a couple

:15:05. > :15:10.of minutes later. The explosion was also caught on camera. It is not

:15:10. > :15:16.yet clear whether it was the meteor exploding in mid-air or hitting the

:15:16. > :15:21.ground. Either way, the shock wave from the blast knocked over walls

:15:21. > :15:25.and blowout windows. This factory in the Urals region suffered

:15:25. > :15:31.extensive damage. People who had rushed to look outside to see what

:15:31. > :15:36.was flying overhead were injured by glass when the windows smashed.

:15:36. > :15:42.Hundreds had to be treated for cuts to their heads and hands. Buildings

:15:42. > :15:45.across the region were evacuated. At one point, the mobile phone

:15:45. > :15:49.networks stop working because of the number of people trying to call

:15:49. > :15:53.friends and relatives. It appears that eyewitnesses all saw the same

:15:53. > :15:57.meteor, but that has not been established for sure, and it is not

:15:57. > :16:01.yet clear how many pieces of meteorite are now lying on the

:16:02. > :16:05.ground in the wilds of the Ural mountains, how many solid reminders

:16:05. > :16:15.there will be of the extraordinary object that fell to earth on a

:16:15. > :16:17.

:16:17. > :16:21.Just to tell you we will be talking a little bit more about that meteor

:16:21. > :16:25.and an asteroid, indeed, that is heading for Earth, coming up a

:16:25. > :16:29.little later in the programme. That asteroid is due to pass within

:16:29. > :16:36.20,000 miles of us this evening. That is still to come. Just a

:16:36. > :16:40.reminder of our main story this lunchtime, horsemeat has been found

:16:40. > :16:44.in summer school dinners in Lancashire. And the Whitbread chain

:16:44. > :16:50.has found horsemeat in some of its meat products.

:16:50. > :16:56.He also still to come here, a gang which staged a cash for crash

:16:56. > :16:59.collision which killed a driver is being sentenced today.

:16:59. > :17:03.Later on BBC London, the flying doctors, London's air ambulance

:17:03. > :17:05.takes to the skies with a whole new look. And in sport we look ahead to

:17:05. > :17:15.this weekend's FA Cup action with Millwall once again in the

:17:15. > :17:23.

:17:23. > :17:28.spotlight. Those stories plus a Our main story this lunchtime, the

:17:28. > :17:32.revelations that horsemeat has been found in school dinners sent to 47

:17:33. > :17:37.Lancashire schools and also, as we said, the huge Whitbread chain also

:17:37. > :17:40.finding horsemeat in a couple of its products. All of this, of

:17:40. > :17:44.course, as the Food Standards Agency prepares to release details

:17:44. > :17:49.of more testing, and we will probably get more results on those

:17:49. > :17:53.tests later today. Let's just assess the situation with medical

:17:53. > :17:57.correspondent Fergus Walsh. We get the sense that things are coming

:17:57. > :18:05.through, information is coming through all the time. What do you

:18:05. > :18:12.make of these developments? Well, obviously, the fact that we found

:18:12. > :18:16.horsemeat in two pub chains and in schools will be of concern, but the

:18:16. > :18:22.medical correspondent, this is not really a medical health issue. This

:18:22. > :18:26.is about mislabelling and a consumer deception issue. Although

:18:26. > :18:31.there are significant developments, I think we may find today, if we

:18:31. > :18:37.are to trust the rumours we are hearing, that the supermarkets will

:18:37. > :18:47.line up and say pretty much they have found none or very little

:18:47. > :18:51.other products with horsemeat in them. For example, the Co-op has

:18:51. > :18:55.said that nine out of 102, all negative, and we have heard from

:18:55. > :19:01.the British Retail Consortium that they are not expecting any of their

:19:01. > :19:04.13 members to reveal more or Smith products. So, obviously, worrying

:19:04. > :19:09.developments today, but in a sense the supermarkets will be hoping

:19:09. > :19:13.very much to draw a line under this, if they can say, well, we have not

:19:13. > :19:18.found any more. Thank you, Fergus Walsh, much more on that story over

:19:18. > :19:23.the course of the day. Four members of a gang who staged a

:19:23. > :19:26.cash for crash collision to result in the death of another driver are

:19:26. > :19:30.being sentenced today. They staged a crash on the A40 in

:19:30. > :19:34.Buckinghamshire which damaged the car of Baljinder Gill, who was then

:19:35. > :19:39.killed by another driver. Our correspondent Tom Symonds is

:19:39. > :19:45.following the case at Reading Crown Court.

:19:45. > :19:50.Yes, these crash for cash scams are increasingly worrying the police.

:19:50. > :19:59.They are staged by criminals so that they can claim personal

:19:59. > :20:08.accident compensation, but this one leads to a tragedy, and as a result

:20:08. > :20:11.a gang of men are facing long The last moments of liberty for the

:20:11. > :20:16.so called Crash For Cash Gang. They staged their collision not on a

:20:16. > :20:21.quiet road but on a dual- carriageway. They planned this

:20:21. > :20:26.quite carefully. Yes, this was an organised crime team who set out to

:20:26. > :20:30.cause a crash on the A40, using their mobile phones to planet. The

:20:31. > :20:35.car you see here pulled in front of the white car, also been driven by

:20:35. > :20:38.one of the members of the gang. The idea was that they would force the

:20:38. > :20:43.green van you see here to crash into the back of the white car when

:20:43. > :20:47.it stood on its brakes. The driver of the green van, recognising that

:20:47. > :20:52.something was afoot, manage to slow down enough to avoid crashing into

:20:52. > :20:56.the back of the white car. Unfortunately, Baljinder Gill,

:20:56. > :21:01.driving the silver car, did not stop in time and crashed into the

:21:01. > :21:05.back of the green van. Baljinder Gill got out of their car to check

:21:05. > :21:09.the damage, but the traffic was still moving. What happened next

:21:09. > :21:14.was witnessed by passengers on a passing coach. The horror of what

:21:14. > :21:19.they saw his evident in their reactions. As Baljinder Gill stood

:21:19. > :21:24.here dealing with her damaged car, another driver was coming up the

:21:24. > :21:29.motorway behind a fast. Colin Lee, in this van, did not see her. He

:21:29. > :21:34.slammed into the back of her car and she was killed instantly.

:21:34. > :21:39.difficulty with causing a crash at 70 mph on a major roads in and out

:21:57. > :22:01.Crash for cash incidents are a growing problem. It is estimated

:22:01. > :22:05.they cost nearly 400 million a year, pushing up insurance premiums

:22:05. > :22:10.for all motorists. One in seven injury claims are linked to the

:22:10. > :22:15.scams. Police are investigating 40 gangs, along with experts from the

:22:27. > :22:32.concerned that people will get injured, and indeed we have seen

:22:32. > :22:35.one fatality. And the officers that investigated this tragedy said it

:23:06. > :23:10.avalanche in the Highlands yesterday has died in hospital. Two

:23:11. > :23:14.men and a woman were buried in snow in the Cairngorms. The area is

:23:14. > :23:21.popular with hill-walkers and is home to three of Scotland's five

:23:25. > :23:28.Yes, within the past few minutes, the Ministry of Defence has

:23:28. > :23:34.confirmed that two of the three people who died in yesterday's

:23:34. > :23:37.incident where RAF personnel. They died just behind me here in an area

:23:53. > :23:57.Yesterday's venture into the hills ended in tragedy. The avalanche

:23:57. > :24:02.happened on the lower slopes, just a few miles from the Cairngorms ski

:24:02. > :24:06.centre. It was not an area thought to be high risk. Certainly not, and

:24:06. > :24:11.everybody who knows about this incident is quite shocked that it

:24:11. > :24:14.happened at this relatively low altitude. Within minutes of the

:24:14. > :24:18.avalanche, mountain rescuers were risking their lives and heading out

:24:18. > :24:23.to try to save others. Two helicopters were sent from RAF

:24:23. > :24:28.Lossiemouth. They picked up the three casualties, two men and a

:24:28. > :24:32.woman, and flew them to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, but none survived.

:24:32. > :24:35.They were not the only people on the mountain yesterday. These two

:24:35. > :24:41.climbers spend the night in a snow hole before making it back safely

:24:41. > :24:47.this morning. You know there is a risk when you go up there. And you

:24:47. > :24:53.just have to be careful, check the snow, use your common sense. I mean,

:24:53. > :24:56.unfortunately, an avalanche can happen whenever. It is terrible,

:24:56. > :25:01.but again, you have just got to choose the right locations, plan

:25:01. > :25:05.ahead, check the weather, check the avalanche forecasts. Eight people

:25:05. > :25:09.have now died on Scottish mountains this year, seven in avalanches, but

:25:09. > :25:18.most climbers and rescuers in the Highlands should not and could not

:25:18. > :25:21.We will get more details of what happened from the police in a news

:25:21. > :25:24.conference this afternoon, but for now the Ministry of Defence says

:25:24. > :25:28.that his thoughts and prayers are with the families of those who died

:25:28. > :25:32.here. All right, thank you for now, James

:25:32. > :25:35.Cook there. A British backpacker missing in the

:25:35. > :25:39.Australian outback for more than three days has been found by

:25:39. > :25:48.rescuers. 18-year-old Sam Woodhead disappeared from a cattle station

:25:48. > :25:52.in Queensland on Tuesday. Nick Rescued from a frightening Outback

:25:52. > :25:56.ordeal, Sam Woodhead, the 18-year- old from London, seen here with his

:25:56. > :26:02.mother and sister at last year's Olympics, whose early evening jog

:26:02. > :26:05.on Tuesday evening became a three- day test of survival. In 40 degree

:26:05. > :26:09.heat of the outback, Australia's harshest terrain, the police had

:26:09. > :26:13.grave fears for his safety. So when the news reached his home in

:26:13. > :26:19.Richmond early this morning that he had been found, his father and

:26:19. > :26:26.sister were elated. Very, very sort of rugged terrain like that,

:26:26. > :26:33.anything could have happened, and I think Sam's fitness and interest in

:26:33. > :26:38.the outdoor world, if you like, has served him in good stead, thank

:26:38. > :26:42.you! And enabled him to last for quite a long time. He had set off

:26:42. > :26:47.from a remote sheep farm in Queensland where he had started

:26:47. > :26:50.working, 80 miles from the nearest town. But then he got lost and

:26:50. > :26:56.disorientated, and rather than making his way back to the farm, he

:26:56. > :27:00.kept moving further away. He was spotted by a rescue helicopter,

:27:01. > :27:06.sunburnt, dehydrated, suffering from cuts and abrasions, but

:27:06. > :27:11.otherwise he is in surprisingly good shape. A fitness fanatic and

:27:11. > :27:14.keen rugby player, he has been in Australia on a gap year before

:27:14. > :27:18.joining the armed forces. He had apparently been finding life on the

:27:18. > :27:28.remote farm a bit boring when he had gone looking for adventure.

:27:28. > :27:34.

:27:34. > :27:37.Nick Bryant there are talking about, thankfully, the recovery of that he

:27:37. > :27:41.and 18-year-old after three days in the outback. Now, as promised, we

:27:41. > :27:45.are going to talk about space matters. As we head earlier, 500

:27:45. > :27:51.people were injured in Russia when that meteorite shot across the sky

:27:51. > :27:56.there, and tonight an asteroid the size of an Olympic swimming pool is

:27:56. > :28:00.going to be whistling past Earth, coming within about 20,000 miles of

:28:01. > :28:03.the surface. Let's assess the significance of these things, with

:28:03. > :28:09.me in the studio is Dr Marek Kukula from the Royal observatory

:28:09. > :28:12.Greenwich. Good afternoon to you. Now, people were injured, we do not

:28:12. > :28:17.want to downplay that, what happened in Russia, but in

:28:17. > :28:21.astronomical terms this is very unusual. It is unusual to see a

:28:21. > :28:25.fireball of this brightness and intensity, and to have such video

:28:25. > :28:32.footage, lots and lots of different clips of video is really unusual,

:28:32. > :28:37.fascinating scientific trochees. And if people find meteorites on

:28:37. > :28:41.the ground, that is presumably important for research. Absolutely,

:28:41. > :28:45.scientists who study meteorites will be very excited to get any

:28:45. > :28:49.solid pieces in their hands, so we have an idea of where it may have

:28:49. > :28:55.come from in the solar system. that is not enough for one day, we

:28:55. > :28:59.have an asteroid, are these two things linked? It could be a

:28:59. > :29:02.coincidence. There are lot of rocks at there, but maybe too much of a

:29:02. > :29:05.coincidence. Scientists will be looking at the trajectory of the

:29:05. > :29:09.Russian meteor to see if it is similar to the orbit of the

:29:10. > :29:15.asteroid. They will be able to compare the composition, but it

:29:15. > :29:19.could just be a cosmic coincidence. 20,000 miles, is that close? It is

:29:19. > :29:22.safe, and it is certainly not going to hit us, unlike the thing that

:29:22. > :29:27.exploded over Russia, but in astronomical terms it is closer

:29:27. > :29:31.than a lot of our satellites, it is within our cosmic territory. It is

:29:31. > :29:35.fascinating, thank you very much indeed, Dr Marek Kukula or from the

:29:35. > :29:43.Royal observatory in Greenwich. I wonder how clear these guys need to

:29:43. > :29:46.be to see any of that. Let's find A pretty decent chance of seeing

:29:46. > :29:51.the asteroid tonight, but you will need a pair of binoculars at the

:29:52. > :29:55.very least. It is a big beasts, 50 metres across, the size of an

:29:55. > :30:01.Olympic swimming pool, and in this Markup you can see how close it is

:30:01. > :30:04.going to get, 17,000 miles at its closest point. -- More Cup.

:30:04. > :30:08.Astronomically speaking, that is close. For example, it is a lot

:30:08. > :30:12.closer than the satellite which took this image of the clouds

:30:12. > :30:16.currently across the UK. There is a little bit of cloud here and there,

:30:16. > :30:20.but a fine afternoon for the majority, sunny spells lifting the

:30:20. > :30:23.temperatures to nine degrees. More cloud may spill into the southwest

:30:23. > :30:28.later this afternoon, but on the south coast we could reach double

:30:28. > :30:32.figures. Maybe not quite as warm as yesterday, but with lighter winds,

:30:32. > :30:35.feeling pleasant in the sunshine. Some patches of cloud around, this

:30:35. > :30:40.one across North Wales may produce some showers, a small chance of

:30:40. > :30:45.showers across Northern Ireland and western Scotland. For the majority,

:30:45. > :30:49.staying fine for the rest of the day. 89 on the Moray Firth already.

:30:49. > :30:51.Temperatures dropping quite sharply this evening, clouding over across

:30:51. > :30:56.Northern Ireland and western Scotland. Elsewhere in the West,

:30:56. > :31:00.the best chance of clear skies, looking for that asteroid, across

:31:00. > :31:05.central and eastern areas. In the clear skies, that is where it is

:31:05. > :31:09.going to turn quite foggy with dense patches expected as

:31:09. > :31:11.temperatures in the East dropped down to freezing. Not as cold in

:31:11. > :31:16.the north-west, where they will be patchy rain. That should clear on

:31:16. > :31:21.Saturday. The fog will be slower to disappear. As I say, it could cause

:31:21. > :31:26.a few issues, it may affect the airports across eastern England,

:31:26. > :31:30.and it may take a while to clear. Once it has gone, much of the

:31:30. > :31:34.country will be dry and bright with sunshine. In the West, cloud,

:31:34. > :31:39.drizzly rain around the western coasts, but for the majority it is

:31:39. > :31:43.a dry and bright Saturday, seven-10 Celsius, about average for the time

:31:43. > :31:47.of year. The finance settled weather is going to last, this high

:31:47. > :31:52.pressure is keeping the weather fronts at bay. -- the fine and

:31:52. > :31:56.settled weather. Generally dry, some cloud milling around, early

:31:56. > :32:00.morning mist and fog again, but generally dry and bright,

:32:00. > :32:04.temperatures up to nine Celsius in the sunshine. Overall, the weekend

:32:04. > :32:08.is pretty pleasant, watch out for morning fog on Saturday, and the

:32:08. > :32:11.winds will be like. More information and a little bit of a

:32:11. > :32:19.video explaining more about the asteroid and the chances of seeing

:32:19. > :32:23.Before we go, a reminder of our top story this lunchtime. Horsemeat has
