:00:10. > :00:13.the financial crash. The Chancellor says it shows his

:00:14. > :00:17.plan for the economy is working - Labour says it's long overdue. We'll

:00:18. > :00:22.be assessing exactly what these figures mean.

:00:23. > :00:25.Also this lunchtime: The trial of ex-News of the World editor Andy

:00:33. > :00:35.The Coronation Street actor William Roache tells a court he didn't know

:00:36. > :00:39.any of his alleged victims and didn't recall ever being in their

:00:43. > :00:49.message from the Public Accounts Committee to the Royal household.

:00:50. > :00:51.American singer, songwriter and activist Pete Seeger dies at the age

:00:52. > :01:06.of 94. ?40 for a full day 's work - the

:01:07. > :01:09.employers short-changing the capital's migrants. And crossing

:01:10. > :01:32.roads in the eyes of the blind. Good afternoon and welcome to the

:01:33. > :01:35.BBC News At One. The British economy grew by 1.9% in

:01:36. > :01:40.2013, according to figures released today by the Office for National

:01:41. > :01:42.Statistics. They are the strongest growth figures since 2007, the year

:01:43. > :01:46.before the banking crisis, which threw much of the world into

:01:47. > :01:48.recession. The Chancellor George Osborne says the numbers are further

:01:49. > :01:53.evidence that the government's long-term economic plan is working.

:01:54. > :01:56.The shadow Chancellor, Ed Balls, also welcomed today's growth

:01:57. > :02:02.figures, but added they were 'long overdue after three damaging years

:02:03. > :02:12.of flatlining'. Here's our chief economic correspondent, Hugh Pym.

:02:13. > :02:17.It's a snapshot of all the main areas of the economy, adding up the

:02:18. > :02:22.value of goods and services to provide a figure called GDP. In the

:02:23. > :02:26.final three months of last year, there was solid growth again. The

:02:27. > :02:29.latest chapter of the economic story is well illustrated at this

:02:30. > :02:34.packaging manufacturer in Northamptonshire. Last year, it was

:02:35. > :02:41.confident enough to invest in a major warehouse expansion. New jobs

:02:42. > :02:46.have been created. The boss told me his success reflected growth in the

:02:47. > :02:51.wider economy. Packaging is a barometer. We deal with a large

:02:52. > :02:56.cross-section of different companies from engineering, retailers to

:02:57. > :03:02.manufacturing. In the past 18 to 24 months, things have picked up. The

:03:03. > :03:09.dominant service sector saw growth of 0.8% in the last quarter.

:03:10. > :03:14.Construction went the other way, down 0.3%. Manufacturing saw healthy

:03:15. > :03:21.growth of 0.9%. The latest figures were hailed by the Chancellor in the

:03:22. > :03:24.Commons. These numbers are a boost for the economic security of

:03:25. > :03:29.hard-working people. Growth is broadly based, with manufacturing

:03:30. > :03:35.growing fastest of all. More evidence are long-term economic plan

:03:36. > :03:39.is working, but the job is not done. But Labour argued the growth picture

:03:40. > :03:45.was not all rosy and the economy was not yet secure. Construction output

:03:46. > :03:48.is still down and business investment isn't coming back. We

:03:49. > :03:55.need a plan to get the investment they need and the recovery which

:03:56. > :03:59.works the people in our country. The economy is growing and jobs are

:04:00. > :04:04.being created, but many in work are still feeling a squeeze because pay

:04:05. > :04:08.rises are rising well behind cost of living increases. Most economists

:04:09. > :04:13.expect that to change over the next year or so, but right now, some may

:04:14. > :04:19.feel the economy has not yet arrived. People we spoke to in Corby

:04:20. > :04:23.had mixed views. Wages haven't gone up like everything else has gone up.

:04:24. > :04:33.I do sense things are getting better. Shops are getting busier

:04:34. > :04:38.now. The economy may not be firing on all cylinders yet, but UK growth

:04:39. > :04:42.was among the fastest of the leading economies in Europe last year. It

:04:43. > :04:48.looks to be the same in 2014 according to most forecasters.

:04:49. > :04:55.On the face of it, good news. How good? Well, on the one hand, growth

:04:56. > :04:59.was a tiny bit slower in the fourth quarter of last year, although

:05:00. > :05:05.perfectly respectable. Overall output is still below where I was

:05:06. > :05:13.before the recession in 20 -- in 2008. And there is a big disparity

:05:14. > :05:17.in different sectors. Manufacturing and construction are still well

:05:18. > :05:22.below the previous peak. Vince Cable and others are saying the economy

:05:23. > :05:26.has not properly rebalanced. On the other hand, the Chancellor and

:05:27. > :05:31.others will say, hang on, this performance last year was the first

:05:32. > :05:36.unbroken run of growth since 2007, among the best of the leading

:05:37. > :05:39.industrialised economies. We were upgraded by the IMF last week,

:05:40. > :05:45.putting Britain among the best performers this year. Jobs are being

:05:46. > :05:48.created, there is not a lot wrong. Let's speak to our chief political

:05:49. > :05:55.correspondent Norman Smith who's at Westminster. We heard those people

:05:56. > :06:00.in Corby saying they feel the recovery has not yet got to them. I

:06:01. > :06:04.presume that is the key for the politics of this, when people start

:06:05. > :06:09.feeling the economy is working in their failure.

:06:10. > :06:13.I think that is true, but there is no doubt Labour is having to pretty

:06:14. > :06:19.much swim against the economic tide with a steady flow of better figures

:06:20. > :06:23.on inflation, unemployment and down growth. One poll of the night

:06:24. > :06:29.reported their lead against the Tories had shrunk to a tiny 1%. This

:06:30. > :06:33.is far from game over on the economy though. Why? Because people do not

:06:34. > :06:38.feel better off yet, despite the recovery. And the main feel better

:06:39. > :06:45.off by the time of the next election. The coalition also still

:06:46. > :06:53.have to spend -- sells sweeping spending cuts. And there is a

:06:54. > :06:58.niggling fear in government circles boys by Vince Cable that this is a

:06:59. > :07:05.recovery fuelled by Roald bad habits of consumer debt and red-hot

:07:06. > :07:08.property prices, which means despite Labour 's difficulties, it is too

:07:09. > :07:16.early for ministers to think it is game over on the economy.

:07:17. > :07:24.Thank you. If you want to read more and today's figures, there is a full

:07:25. > :07:28.interactive guide on our website. A court's heard that a former News

:07:29. > :07:31.of the World reporter played a recording of a hacked voice mail -

:07:32. > :07:34.left by actress Sienna Miller for Daniel Craig - to his editor, Andy

:07:35. > :07:37.Coulson. Dan Evans - a witness for the prosecution who's already

:07:38. > :07:42.pleaded guilty to hacking - told the court Mr Coulson described the tape

:07:43. > :07:53.as "brilliant". Mr Coulson denies hacking charges. Our home affairs

:07:54. > :07:58.correspondent is at the Old Bailey. Yes, this long trial has often been

:07:59. > :08:02.quite technical, the prosecution relying on documents, transcripts

:08:03. > :08:07.and timelines. But this week, the jury has heard from Jude Law and

:08:08. > :08:14.today again from a man who said he was at the heart of the News of the

:08:15. > :08:17.World phone hacking operation. Dan Evans was recruited to the News of

:08:18. > :08:28.the World for his phone hacking skills, he says. He told the jury in

:08:29. > :08:32.2005 he tried to investigate rumours the actor Sienna Miller was cheating

:08:33. > :08:37.on her then partner Jude Law. On the phone of another actor comic Daniel

:08:38. > :08:42.Craig, he said he found a message saying, I love you, from sienna

:08:43. > :08:46.Miller. He said the journalists began to mobilise to flesh out the

:08:47. > :08:54.story. Andy Coulson came over and listen to the tape. He said, good

:08:55. > :08:58.work. Andy Coulson said it was brilliant, while another executive

:08:59. > :09:02.held my elbow and said, you are a company man now. Andy wanted to

:09:03. > :09:13.preserve the tape but not the original recording.

:09:14. > :09:19.The story was eventually published. Evans told the jury, for the record,

:09:20. > :09:24.I would like to apologise to them all for infringing their privacy. He

:09:25. > :09:25.told the jury he felt terrorised by one manager
