:00:13. > :00:17.22 people - including children - have been killed after a man

:00:18. > :00:20.detonated a bomb at the end of a pop concert in Manchester.

:00:21. > :00:27.A suicide bomber detonated a device last night.

:00:28. > :00:29.The explosion happened in the foyer of the Arena,

:00:30. > :00:31.as people made their way out after a performance

:00:32. > :00:35.by the American singer, Ariana Grande.

:00:36. > :00:40.We heard this bang and everyone just stopped, there was silence and then

:00:41. > :00:42.there was panic and everyone was sprinting up the stairs trying

:00:43. > :00:48.to jump over the barrier onto the floor.

:00:49. > :00:53.Thousands of children were at the concert.

:00:54. > :00:57.The Prime Minister has condemned what she called a "callous" act.

:00:58. > :01:00.This attack stands out for its appalling,

:01:01. > :01:02.sickening cowardice - deliberately targeting innocent,

:01:03. > :01:06.defenceless children and young people who should have been enjoying

:01:07. > :01:15.one of the most memorable nights of their lives.

:01:16. > :01:20.The first victim has been named as college student

:01:21. > :01:22.student Georgina Callander, who was 19.

:01:23. > :01:27.This is my daughter, Olivia, I havent seen her

:01:28. > :01:31.She was at the Ariana Grande concert with her friend.

:01:32. > :01:42.If anyone has seen her, please contact the police.

:01:43. > :01:48.We will bring you the latest from here in Manchester on the BBC News

:01:49. > :01:53.at One. This has been the most horrific

:01:54. > :01:56.incident we have ever faced here in Greater Manchester and one

:01:57. > :01:58.that we all hoped Stay with BBC News for all

:01:59. > :02:04.the developments from Manchester, where police patrols have been

:02:05. > :02:07.stepped up - including Good afternoon and welcome

:02:08. > :02:37.to the BBC News at One from Manchester, which has

:02:38. > :02:39.experienced the UK's worst terrorist attack since the July 7th

:02:40. > :02:47.attacks in London in 2005. 22 people have been

:02:48. > :02:58.killed, and 59 injured - They are now being treated at a

:02:59. > :03:03.number of hospitals in and around Manchester. They were among

:03:04. > :03:07.thousands of people who had come to the concert of Ariana Grande and at

:03:08. > :03:11.the end of the concert at around 10.30 last night, the explosion went

:03:12. > :03:17.off. Let's talk you through what we know so far.

:03:18. > :03:19.Greater Manchester Police were called to the Arena at 10.33pm.

:03:20. > :03:23.The Prime Minister called the attack on fans at an Ariana Grande concert

:03:24. > :03:28.here an act of "appalling, sickening cowardice".

:03:29. > :03:32.The explosion happened in the Arena's foyer last night,

:03:33. > :03:38.as people began streaming through the doors at the end of the concert.

:03:39. > :03:40.Police said the lone male attacker, who died in the blast, detonated

:03:41. > :03:53.Security has been tightened in the wake of the attack.

:03:54. > :03:56.Surrounding streets were sealed off and nearby Victoria station closed.

:03:57. > :03:58.A warning that this report, from Richard Galpin, contains scenes

:03:59. > :04:13.Oh my God. What is going on? Something has happened. What had

:04:14. > :04:18.been a night of online elation for thousands of teenagers. Oh, my God.

:04:19. > :04:26.Turned to absolute panic. Everyone's heard what they think is a bomb

:04:27. > :04:33.going off. And the only thing now is to get out of this Arena, as fast as

:04:34. > :04:36.possible. It was shocking. Like, just heard this massive bang. Then

:04:37. > :04:41.everyone started running towards us, screaming and crying. Everyone just

:04:42. > :04:45.jumping over us to get out. I saw parents with kids running out with

:04:46. > :04:49.blood all over them. I picked this lady up who said she was looking for

:04:50. > :04:53.her grand kids, who couldn't find her grand kids, she picked up a

:04:54. > :04:58.young girl on the floor who was covered in blood with parents laying

:04:59. > :05:05.next to them. It is just all bizarre. The glass and nuts, metal

:05:06. > :05:12.nuts that have been in the device that have exploded. I can't think of

:05:13. > :05:21.anything else that's got nuts that would be flying around. Which way?

:05:22. > :05:28.Which way. Come on. Traumatised and uncertain what to do, many of the

:05:29. > :05:31.youngsters just keep running. Some, searching for their parents, who'd

:05:32. > :05:36.been waiting to pick them up at the end of the concert. Others looking

:05:37. > :05:39.for relatives and friends who've gone missing and today some families

:05:40. > :05:43.are still trying to find their children. The family of Olivia

:05:44. > :05:48.Campbell Hardy have heard nothing from her since she went to last

:05:49. > :05:53.night's concert She was at the concert. She's just seen the support

:05:54. > :05:57.act and said she was having an amazing time and thanking me for

:05:58. > :06:02.letting her go. She was with her friend Adam. Adam was found, he is

:06:03. > :06:08.in hospital. But Olivia has not been found yet. I'm at home phoning

:06:09. > :06:12.everybody, hospitals, police, all these centres that are the children

:06:13. > :06:15.have been put in. Her dad is actually in Manchester looking for

:06:16. > :06:21.her. I've got friends out looking for her. I've got people I don't

:06:22. > :06:25.even know out looking for her. Social media has been wonderful. I

:06:26. > :06:32.don't know what I would've done without them. It's made it so aware

:06:33. > :06:36.that she's misand there's -- missing and there's thousands of people who

:06:37. > :06:40.know she's missing, have seen her picture and there are people out

:06:41. > :06:46.looking for her that I don't know. I can't thank these people enough for

:06:47. > :06:49.giving their time up. Children are amongst the many casualties. All the

:06:50. > :06:52.major hospitals in Manchester being used last night to receive the

:06:53. > :06:56.injured and the dead. And this morning, the police

:06:57. > :07:01.confirmed it was a terrorist attack, carried out by a suicide bomber.

:07:02. > :07:06.This has been the most horrific incident we have ever faced here in

:07:07. > :07:12.Greater Manchester and one that we all hoped we would never see.

:07:13. > :07:16.Families and many young people were out to enjoy a concert at the

:07:17. > :07:19.Manchester Arena and have sadly lost their lives. We believe at this

:07:20. > :07:23.stage that the attack last night was conducted by one man. The priority

:07:24. > :07:29.is to establish whether he was acting alone or as part of a

:07:30. > :07:35.network. The attacker, I can confirm, died at the Arena. We

:07:36. > :07:39.believe the attacker was carrying an improvised explosive device which he

:07:40. > :07:43.detonated, causing this atrocity. In Downing Street, flags are flying at

:07:44. > :07:47.half-mast in the aftermath of the worst terrorist attack in Britain

:07:48. > :07:53.since the suicide bombings on London Transport 12 years ago.

:07:54. > :08:01.All acts of terrorism are cowardly attacks on innocent people. But this

:08:02. > :08:08.attack stands out for its appalling, sickening cowardice. Deliberately

:08:09. > :08:12.targeting innocent defensive children and young people, who

:08:13. > :08:14.should have been enjoying one of the most memorable nights of their

:08:15. > :08:19.lives. Let us remember those who died and let us celebrate those who

:08:20. > :08:25.helped, safe in the knowledge that the terrorists will never win and

:08:26. > :08:31.our values, our country and our way of life will always prevail. The

:08:32. > :08:35.horror of what happened at the Arena last night led to many ordinary

:08:36. > :08:40.people offering to help. Taxi drivers providing free lifts for

:08:41. > :08:45.those who couldn't get back home. Others offering rooms for anyone

:08:46. > :08:50.needing somewhere to sleep. As for who was responsible for this attack?

:08:51. > :08:55.The police believe they do know the person's identity. And already, a

:08:56. > :09:01.23-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the bombing. Also

:09:02. > :09:06.this morning, the first victim has been named. She's 18-year-old

:09:07. > :09:10.Georgina calendar, on the left in this photograph. Posing with the

:09:11. > :09:17.singer, Ariana Grande, who was performing at last night's concert.

:09:18. > :09:20.The children at the concert would never have imagined he they'd end up

:09:21. > :09:25.like this, having to escape a terrorist attack. But it's clear

:09:26. > :09:29.they were deliberately targeted and that has provoked both such and

:09:30. > :09:42.revulsion in this country and around the world.

:09:43. > :09:47.Terrifying accounts are emerging from concert goers, as they tried

:09:48. > :09:52.You can just see the stairs there, that many people ran down, after the

:09:53. > :09:55.explosion went off at about 0.30 last night. People have been talking

:09:56. > :09:59.-- 10.30 last night. People have been talking about how they got

:10:00. > :10:03.separated from their loved once and the desperate search for loved once

:10:04. > :10:08.who are missing. Also talking about how they saw the explosion and saw

:10:09. > :10:13.nuts and bolts flying through the air. Danny Savage reports and you

:10:14. > :10:15.may find some pictures in the report distressing.

:10:16. > :10:24.This is my daughter owe livia. I have not seen her since 5.00 last

:10:25. > :10:28.night. She was at the Ariana Grande concert with her friend. I'm worried

:10:29. > :10:31.sick. If anybody can seen her, contact the police, even if you

:10:32. > :10:36.think you have seen her, just let the police know, please. An appeal

:10:37. > :10:39.from a desperate mum. Charlotte Campbell hasn't heard from her

:10:40. > :10:43.daughter, Olivia, who was at the concert last night. Her family has

:10:44. > :10:53.been out searching for the teenager for hours I need my daughter home. I

:10:54. > :10:58.need to know where she is. On the wards of numerous hospitals across

:10:59. > :11:03.Manchester, the casualties have been treated and the bore received are --

:11:04. > :11:08.bereaved are being comforted We weren't sure what happened. We

:11:09. > :11:13.thought it was a balloon that had popped. Or possibly a wire or

:11:14. > :11:16.something. We didn't think it was an explosion. The minute we heard the

:11:17. > :11:20.bells we ran up to our hotel. Outside city centre hotels,

:11:21. > :11:25.survivors recounted the horror of what happened inside the arena.

:11:26. > :11:30.Towards the last song she let a load of helium balloons down, quite a

:11:31. > :11:36.lot. A bang happened. We thought - I mean we looked at each other and we

:11:37. > :11:41.were like, no, no, it can't be something that you see on the news,

:11:42. > :11:43.that doesn't happen it people like us. It's the balloons. Everyone

:11:44. > :11:47.calmed around us and all of a sudden, everyone started screaming

:11:48. > :11:53.and running in every direction. There was one girl there, she

:11:54. > :11:59.tumbled over the seats. She went over about three seats. It was

:12:00. > :12:04.awful. She fell. On social media, numerous appeals soon appeared for

:12:05. > :12:11.concert-goers to contact home. Deborah Hutchinson from Newcastle

:12:12. > :12:15.wrote "My daughter, Courtney Boyle and partner Philip have gone missing

:12:16. > :12:19.in an attack in Manchester. Please share and help find them, I need

:12:20. > :12:23.them home safe." People who were there, tried to offer help online,

:12:24. > :12:28.too. Sharing pictures of missing people. People who need help, who

:12:29. > :12:32.have nowhere to sleep, need food and water. Trying to get awareness out

:12:33. > :12:39.for people willing to help. A picture of chaos and panic emerged I

:12:40. > :12:44.heard an explosion, I was like - we need to run, we started running all

:12:45. > :12:48.the way down to the doors to the hoe tempt all I heard was people

:12:49. > :12:54.screaming and crying and running everywhere. It is harder to imagine

:12:55. > :12:58.a softer target for this attack. So many of the teenagers and children

:12:59. > :13:01.who were there last night were given tickets as a Christmas or birthday

:13:02. > :13:05.present. Thousands of children and young people have gone to school

:13:06. > :13:10.this morning, knowing of a friend or a friend of a friend who was at the

:13:11. > :13:14.concert last night and now numerous families are having to arrange the

:13:15. > :13:17.funeral of a son or daughter, who went out yesterday evening, so

:13:18. > :13:23.excited, ahead of that concert. Danny Savage, BBC News.

:13:24. > :13:29.We now know, 22 people killed, 59 injured. The injured are being

:13:30. > :13:33.treated at a number of hospitals in and around Manchester. The Prime

:13:34. > :13:37.Minister has been praising the work of paramedics, doctors and nurses as

:13:38. > :13:39.they try to care for those people, many of them with life-threatening

:13:40. > :13:48.injuries. Let's get the latest now

:13:49. > :13:51.from Stepping Hill Hospital Our Health Correspondent

:13:52. > :13:56.Dominic Hughes is there. What is the picture there? Good

:13:57. > :14:00.afternoon, Ben, we know a fleet of 60 ambulances, drawn not just from

:14:01. > :14:04.Greater Manchester, from the north West Ambulance Service but

:14:05. > :14:08.neighbouring services in the Midlands and North Wales, ferried

:14:09. > :14:12.the 59 most seriously injured people to eight homingts in the Greater

:14:13. > :14:16.Manchester area, including major trauma centres at Wythenshawe and

:14:17. > :14:19.Manchester Royal Infirmary but so many people were badly injured other

:14:20. > :14:22.hospitals took them. Here at Stepping Hill nine people were

:14:23. > :14:26.admitted with major trauma injuries. We know at least one was a child.

:14:27. > :14:29.Three of those people were still being operated own this morning, so

:14:30. > :14:34.they are in, still, a very serious condition. But here at the hospital,

:14:35. > :14:39.we've heard stories of staff coming in overnight to help out E and to

:14:40. > :14:44.help out in operating theatres and we know that the hospital actually

:14:45. > :14:48.had to turn some staff away because the next couple of days are also

:14:49. > :14:52.going to be challenging for the NHS across the region but we do know

:14:53. > :14:58.that they say they have enough blood from blood donation centres to treat

:14:59. > :15:01.all those who need it. So they are asking people to think carefully

:15:02. > :15:04.before they go to A While services are operating as normal,

:15:05. > :15:14.they will be under bigger pressure. Thank you very much, Dominic.

:15:15. > :15:20.The Prime Minister has chaired a meeting with Cobra in Downing

:15:21. > :15:25.Street. We gather there will be another meeting later today. She is

:15:26. > :15:30.travelling to Manchester with the election campaign suspended. She is

:15:31. > :15:34.travelling to meet Greater Manchester Police and other senior

:15:35. > :15:38.police commanders. She has described this as a callous, terrorist attack.

:15:39. > :15:41.Paul Adams has this report. Forensic police at the scene

:15:42. > :15:43.this morning, beginning What, if any wider lessons

:15:44. > :15:49.need to be learned? In and around the venue,

:15:50. > :15:54.there will be clues. In London, ministers gathered

:15:55. > :15:56.for a meeting of the government's top security committee,

:15:57. > :16:00.Cobra. After the first mass casualty attack

:16:01. > :16:05.in Britain for a dozen years. After the first mass casualty attack

:16:06. > :16:08.in Britain for a dozen years, what level of danger does

:16:09. > :16:10.the country now face? That means a terrorist attack

:16:11. > :16:18.remains highly likely. But the independent

:16:19. > :16:21.Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre which sets the threat level

:16:22. > :16:23.on the basis of the intelligence available to them, will continue

:16:24. > :16:26.to assess this throughout the day Not since 2005 and the attacks

:16:27. > :16:33.of 7/7 have the authorities had to deal with something

:16:34. > :16:35.on this scale. Plenty of plots have been foiled

:16:36. > :16:38.in the years since and counterterror police are still making arrests

:16:39. > :16:41.at an average rate of one day. But the public perception

:16:42. > :16:49.of the threats we face has changed. Four years ago, Fusilier Lee Rigby

:16:50. > :16:52.was hacked to death near a London barracks and two months ago,

:16:53. > :16:55.an attacker using a car and a knife Last night's atrocity

:16:56. > :16:59.was more sophisticated. This attack does involve someone

:17:00. > :17:01.being able to get hold Turn them into a belt and then make

:17:02. > :17:10.the effort of putting bolts and things in that in order to kill

:17:11. > :17:14.people and then has used it at one So, this is a much more

:17:15. > :17:19.professional style of attack. Does this mean big venues up

:17:20. > :17:21.and down the country There's no evidence yet that

:17:22. > :17:27.last night's attacker passed unchallenged

:17:28. > :17:29.through security, but some A few people we spoke to,

:17:30. > :17:36.like friends that we met before and after the gig,

:17:37. > :17:37.they said their bags Usually, I am quite a regular

:17:38. > :17:44.gig goer and I am used to getting my bags checked

:17:45. > :17:46.for security purposes. A brief moment of panic this morning

:17:47. > :17:56.outside Manchester's Arndale Centre. The danger, if any, passed,

:17:57. > :18:05.but the Arndale has been In 1996, it was wrecked

:18:06. > :18:08.by an IRA bomb. And eight years ago,

:18:09. > :18:11.a plot involving a car bomb A Pakistani student

:18:12. > :18:18.was convicted in the US in 2015. Investigators at the Arena

:18:19. > :18:21.will want to know how and where the attacker obtained

:18:22. > :18:24.the ingredients for his bomb and crucially, was he acting

:18:25. > :18:29.alone or part of a cell? In London, the Metropolitan Police

:18:30. > :18:33.commissioner, Cressida Dick said more officers have already been put

:18:34. > :18:36.on duty, the impact of last night's attack will be felt

:18:37. > :18:56.right across the country. talk to Vicki Young in Downing

:18:57. > :19:01.Street and Daniel Sandford he is at Greater Manchester Police

:19:02. > :19:02.headquarters. Daniel, so-called Islamic state claiming

:19:03. > :19:08.responsibility, what more do we know about the attack and whether it was

:19:09. > :19:08.the work of one man or perhaps unorganised group, and organise

:19:09. > :19:17.sell? First of all we have to set aside

:19:18. > :19:22.the claim of responsibility by Islamic State. They have had a

:19:23. > :19:25.tendency to do that regardless of whether or not they have been

:19:26. > :19:34.involved in recent years. At this point there appears to have been one

:19:35. > :19:39.attacker who was carrying and explosive device and he was killed.

:19:40. > :19:42.Police now need to find out where it was made because once they have

:19:43. > :19:47.found back, they can work out whether he made the device by

:19:48. > :19:52.himself or whether he was assisted by others in making the device. But

:19:53. > :19:57.then opens up a wider network. We know there are expected to be a

:19:58. > :20:02.number of arrests. At 23-year-old was arrested in South Manchester not

:20:03. > :20:05.that long ago and that is part of arresting known associates of the

:20:06. > :20:09.man. Police have identified who they believe who the bomb was because he

:20:10. > :20:16.was carrying a form of ID on him, so it didn't make it too difficult for

:20:17. > :20:21.them. It sounds like they are fairly sure now, from what Theresa May was

:20:22. > :20:26.saying, who that was. One tragic bits of news now, we understand the

:20:27. > :20:30.youngest person this bomber killed was of primary school age, possibly

:20:31. > :20:36.seven or eight years of age. Horrendous that one of the victims

:20:37. > :20:38.could have been that young. This is an massive, National

:20:39. > :20:46.counterterrorism police operation and at the moment we are only in the

:20:47. > :20:50.foothills. Indeed, thank you. We know many of the fans at the concert

:20:51. > :20:57.were very young indeed. Let's go to Vicki Young in Downing Street. The

:20:58. > :21:02.Prime Minister making her way to Manchester this afternoon to

:21:03. > :21:06.coordinate with police commanders? That's right, she has been dealing

:21:07. > :21:10.with the practicalities, we know she was kept up-to-date overnight with

:21:11. > :21:15.what was going on. This morning she chaired that emergency meeting with

:21:16. > :21:19.other senior Cabinet colleagues, senior police officers and

:21:20. > :21:23.intelligence officers. Looking at the practicalities of those who are

:21:24. > :21:28.injured and of course, discussing the ongoing threat. But I think at

:21:29. > :21:32.times it is not just about the practicalities, people do look to

:21:33. > :21:34.the Prime Minister to try and encapsulate how the nation is

:21:35. > :21:40.feeling at the time of shock. We could hear that in her speech today,

:21:41. > :21:45.the anger, the defiance saying our values will prevail in the end. We

:21:46. > :21:49.will try and stop these terrorist attacks, but she is also aware she

:21:50. > :21:52.is not the first British Prime Minister to stand here and have to

:21:53. > :21:57.react to this kind of atrocity. I think she was trying to talk about

:21:58. > :22:03.the emotion, the scale of this because of the way it seemed to be

:22:04. > :22:11.targeted at young children, calling it a sickening cowardice. She also

:22:12. > :22:15.want to offer hope to people in despair, don't just envisage those

:22:16. > :22:22.awful scenes of carnage, but think about the positive side, the help

:22:23. > :22:25.from the emergency services, the people of Manchester. She wants to

:22:26. > :22:30.hold onto that as well. We are in the middle of the general election

:22:31. > :22:34.campaign, that been suspended. There are no discussions as to when that

:22:35. > :22:38.will resume at the moment. It seems too soon to get back into the cut

:22:39. > :22:44.and thrust of the general election campaign. Vicki Young, thank you.

:22:45. > :22:46.Our Security Correspondent Gordon Corera has been

:22:47. > :22:58.A wide-ranging investigation, not just in Manchester but around the

:22:59. > :23:03.United Kingdom, what else are you hearing about the investigation? It

:23:04. > :23:06.is this urgent need to find out whether this individual acted alone

:23:07. > :23:11.whether he was part of a network. A key aspect of that will be trying to

:23:12. > :23:14.locate where the device was May, trying to find a bomb factory and

:23:15. > :23:20.understand if other bombs could be up there. That is vital for the

:23:21. > :23:25.security services to know whether the threat that sits, if there is a

:23:26. > :23:29.remaining threats potentially from other people and devices. The threat

:23:30. > :23:33.level has not gone up to critical, which means they don't have hard

:23:34. > :23:37.intelligence of another imminent attack. If they did have that, they

:23:38. > :23:42.would have gone too critical. But they are trying to bottom out the

:23:43. > :23:45.network of this individual, if one exists, or understand how he came to

:23:46. > :23:52.manufacture and develop this device. That will mean very urgent work by

:23:53. > :23:55.MI5 and the police. We are likely to see more arrests, more raids today

:23:56. > :24:12.as they try and answer those questions. Gordon, thank you very

:24:13. > :24:16.much indeed. We can hear now from Jeremy Corbyn, who has been

:24:17. > :24:23.expressing his sympathy for the victims and his admiration for the

:24:24. > :24:27.security services. We must support those people who have suffered so

:24:28. > :24:31.much, those families who have lost Young ones, those families who still

:24:32. > :24:36.don't know what is happening with their own children. This is the most

:24:37. > :24:42.terrible and traumatic time. In these circumstances we have to come

:24:43. > :24:45.together. In these circumstances, a city and a community comes together

:24:46. > :24:49.in solidarity and strength. So we carry on and we don't allow these

:24:50. > :24:53.attacks and these people to divide us, or prevent us from leading the

:24:54. > :24:56.decent and normal lives we all want to lead. Five

:24:57. > :25:08.macro you are watching BBC News with special coverage from Manchester.

:25:09. > :25:10.Leaders from around the world have condemned the attack.

:25:28. > :25:43.Our Diplomatic Correspondent, James Landale, reports.

:25:44. > :25:49.Paris and St Petersburg, now Manchester. Today it was

:25:50. > :25:55.Manchester's turned to share solidarity with the people of

:25:56. > :25:59.Britain. On the later stage of his tour of the Middle East, President

:26:00. > :26:07.Trump said what he called the wicked ideology behind terrorism had to be

:26:08. > :26:11.completely obliterated. So many young, beautiful, innocent people

:26:12. > :26:19.living their lives, murdered by evil losers in life. I won't call them

:26:20. > :26:31.monsters, because they would like that term. They would think that's a

:26:32. > :26:38.great name. I will call them, from now on, losers. Because that's what

:26:39. > :26:42.they are, they are losers. The President's spokesman said he had

:26:43. > :26:47.telephoned Theresa May to express his condolences, the first of many

:26:48. > :26:51.world leaders to make similar calls. The newly elected president of

:26:52. > :26:55.France, and manual macro, also spoke to the Prime Minister and offered

:26:56. > :26:59.her all means of cooperation to help Britain in the fight of terrorism.

:27:00. > :27:08.In Berlin, the union flag was at half-mast at the British Embassy.

:27:09. > :27:11.And Germany's Chancellor offered her support and sympathy.

:27:12. > :27:14.TRANSLATION: This suspected terrorist attack will merely

:27:15. > :27:18.strengthen our determination to continue working together with our

:27:19. > :27:23.friends in the UK to combat those who plan and carry out such

:27:24. > :27:29.despicable acts. People in the UK can rest assured Germany stands

:27:30. > :27:34.shoulder to shoulder with them. In Brussels, flags at the European

:27:35. > :27:39.Commission and here at the European Parliament were also lowered out of

:27:40. > :27:43.respect to the victims. The president of the European Council,

:27:44. > :27:48.Donald Tusk, tweeted. My heart is in Manchester. Our thoughts are with

:27:49. > :27:53.the victims. Jean-Claude Juncker expressed his deepest sympathies. In

:27:54. > :27:57.a telegram to Theresa May, President Putin offered to step up pressure's

:27:58. > :28:02.counterterrorism cooperation with Britain and other leaders around the

:28:03. > :28:07.world offered their condolences and support. Japan's Prime Minister said

:28:08. > :28:13.this week's G-7 meeting in Italy would show their determination to

:28:14. > :28:19.stand up to terrorism. The president of Japan said China stood with

:28:20. > :28:23.Britain at this time. And in Canberra, the Prime Minister there

:28:24. > :28:30.condemned what he called a vile attack directed at teenagers. This

:28:31. > :28:34.is an attack on innocence. This surely, there is no crime more

:28:35. > :28:41.reprehensible than the murder of children. This is a direct and

:28:42. > :28:47.brutal attack on young people everywhere, on freedom everywhere.

:28:48. > :28:56.It was a message that echoed around the world, on social media.

:28:57. > :29:01.We were hearing from Daniel Sandford, the tragic news that what

:29:02. > :29:14.we think is the youngest victim of the attack was just eight years old.

:29:15. > :29:22.Saffy Rusoss, who was from Lancashire. A primary school child

:29:23. > :29:31.from Lancashire has been named the second of the fatalities, after this

:29:32. > :29:37.atrocity at the Manchester Arena. 59 injured are still being treated in

:29:38. > :29:42.various hospitals in Manchester and around Manchester. Hugh Pym is at

:29:43. > :29:52.the Manchester Royal in the. What is the picture there? We had a briefing

:29:53. > :29:56.from a senior official at North West Ambulance Service and a senior

:29:57. > :30:00.health official here in Greater Manchester summing up the NHS

:30:01. > :30:04.response across the region. Those 59 patients are spread across eight

:30:05. > :30:09.hospitals, nine are here at Manchester Royal. We asked how many

:30:10. > :30:13.of them were children, how many were adults. They were not able to

:30:14. > :30:18.confirm that, or say much more but we know 12 are at Royal Manchester

:30:19. > :30:23.Children's Hospital and there is at least one of the trial at another

:30:24. > :30:27.hospital. They pay tribute to the emergency services in what they said

:30:28. > :30:30.was a terrible night for Manchester. They expressed their condolences for

:30:31. > :30:36.the bereaved, but said there had been a very joined up plan put into

:30:37. > :30:43.action. They had, in effect, written the plan beforehand. They talked of

:30:44. > :30:46.getting documents out and enacting it very quickly in terms of

:30:47. > :30:50.coordinating ambulance help from other parts of northern England,

:30:51. > :30:56.getting doctors and nurses into hospitals. There were 60 vehicles

:30:57. > :31:01.deployed with paramedics, about 300 staff were involved overnight. They

:31:02. > :31:05.said some of the 59 are seriously ill. They wouldn't say how many.

:31:06. > :31:10.Some are in intensive care and they say some may be in hospital for a

:31:11. > :31:14.long time yet and they made a sort of plea, if you like, to local

:31:15. > :31:21.people that these hospitals will be under a certain amount of pressure

:31:22. > :31:24.and strain in the days and weeks ahead and people should respect that

:31:25. > :31:31.before going to A and only do that if they particularly needed it.

:31:32. > :31:37.Well, part of the tragedy of what happened here last night at the

:31:38. > :31:42.arena is that there were so many young people there at that concert

:31:43. > :31:50.by Ariana Grande and the singer, who has so many young fans, has tweeted

:31:51. > :31:55.that she is "broken", "from the bottom of my heart." The Manchester

:31:56. > :31:59.Arena is the biggest pop venue of its kind in the city. It has a

:32:00. > :32:04.capacity of 21,000. Some of the biggest names in pop and rock

:32:05. > :32:07.perform here. Our entertainment correspondent reports now on the

:32:08. > :32:15.response to the tragedy here of the entertainment and music industry.

:32:16. > :32:18.It was a situation with which any parent could identify.

:32:19. > :32:20.Dropping your children off at an event they've been looking

:32:21. > :32:23.forward to for months and coming back to pick them up

:32:24. > :32:29.They'd come to see Ariana Grande's Dangerous Woman Tour but ended up

:32:30. > :32:35.Members of an audience which became the target of a terrorist attack.

:32:36. > :32:41.The singer made her name as a children's TV star

:32:42. > :32:48.and still attracts a very young, predominantly female fan base.

:32:49. > :32:50.Many in the crowd were pre-teens, some as young as seven or eight.

:32:51. > :32:54.Entertainment stars expressed their horror at the night's event.

:32:55. > :32:58.It shocks me every time we hear this sort of news,

:32:59. > :33:01.that attacks like this can happen, but especially when there

:33:02. > :33:05.will be so many children at this concert tonight.

:33:06. > :33:08.We'll all go to bed holding our little ones even

:33:09. > :33:22.Last year, Time Magazine named Ariana Grande as one of the 100 most

:33:23. > :33:25.influential people on the planet, highlighting her 150 million social

:33:26. > :33:27.media followers and the role it plays in attracting her young fans.

:33:28. > :33:29.It was with a tweet she communicated after the attack,

:33:30. > :33:35.From the bottom of my heart, I am so, so, sorry,

:33:36. > :33:41.Now the world of music is using the same platform

:33:42. > :33:43.to voice their support, both for her and the

:33:44. > :33:47.Taylor Swift says she is offering her thoughts and prayers and tears

:33:48. > :33:50.for all those affected by the Manchester tragedy.

:33:51. > :33:52.Harry Styles described himself as "heart broken"

:33:53. > :33:57.A sentiment shared by Katy Perry who says she is broken hearted

:33:58. > :34:04.for the families and broken hearted for Ariana Grande.

:34:05. > :34:07.And those stars can picture exactly where the attack took place

:34:08. > :34:11.because the Manchester Arena is the second-largest indoor

:34:12. > :34:13.music venue in Europe, and their world tours

:34:14. > :34:21.Tomorrow night Take That were due to play the first of three

:34:22. > :34:30.Harvey Goldsmith, the promoter behind Live Aid says last night's

:34:31. > :34:32.attack has huge implications for the live music market.

:34:33. > :34:35.The most vulnerable point is on the exit and, therefore,

:34:36. > :34:39.I presume all the arenas and promoters together will review

:34:40. > :34:44.how to deal with people leaving concerts but if it's outside

:34:45. > :34:46.the concert area, the arena itself, where the concert takes place,

:34:47. > :34:49.if it is on the way out, it is very difficult to do much more

:34:50. > :34:57.It is believed that Ariana Grande will cancel the remaining

:34:58. > :35:00.European dates of her tour, which was scheduled

:35:01. > :35:04.The former child star is now having to deal with the most

:35:05. > :35:27.Manchester is a city still coming to terms with lasts night. Theresa May

:35:28. > :35:31.has paid tribute to the city. She said this morning, the cowardice of

:35:32. > :35:36.the attacker was met by the bravery of the emergency services and of the

:35:37. > :35:46.people of Manchester. Dan Johnson reports now.

:35:47. > :35:54.Manchester's streets, busy with shoppers. Some shocked, some sad but

:35:55. > :36:02.determined. Absolutely defiant. There is nobody in this world that

:36:03. > :36:06.will keep us away of coming to the centre of Manchester, it's vibrancy,

:36:07. > :36:10.it's Metropolitan feeling, it's fantastic, no amount of evilness

:36:11. > :36:14.will ever, ever dampen any good thought there is about Manchester.

:36:15. > :36:18.Greater Manchester's new mayor shared their pride and defiance. I

:36:19. > :36:24.want it thank the people of Manchester. Even if the minute after

:36:25. > :36:30.the attack, they opened their doors to strangers and drove them away

:36:31. > :36:34.from danger. They gave the best-possible, immediate response to

:36:35. > :36:38.those who seek to divide us. And it'll be that spirit of Manchester

:36:39. > :36:43.that will prevail and hold us together. There were so many offers

:36:44. > :36:47.to donate blood. This morning they had to turn people away. Obviously,

:36:48. > :36:52.with the tragedy that has happened, if we can help in that way, that

:36:53. > :36:56.would be beneficial. So, it would be nice, you know, to do something to

:36:57. > :37:02.help. I really wanted to come down and see if I could help at all. Such

:37:03. > :37:06.a massive tragedy. An overwhelming response on social media. I thought

:37:07. > :37:09.I would come down and try to give blood. Do my bit. Last night, an inp

:37:10. > :37:14.stintive reaction from the city's cab drivers, not to run from danger

:37:15. > :37:18.but to help others find their familiar lane it offer them lifts

:37:19. > :37:24.home I have just come down to see if anyone needed a lift home f they

:37:25. > :37:28.were stranded or lost or anything. As a good citizen, it's the time

:37:29. > :37:35.where everyone needs to come together. Trying to come down to

:37:36. > :37:39.help the people get home, free of charge, without worry being paying

:37:40. > :37:44.to get home. This city has felt destruction before. An IRA bomb

:37:45. > :37:47.exploded at the Arndale shopping centre in 1996, injuring hundreds of

:37:48. > :37:56.people, just yards from last night's attack. This post box was about the

:37:57. > :37:59.only thing that. The city centre has been rebuilt around it, it is a

:38:00. > :38:02.reminder of the strength and resilience of the city and it is

:38:03. > :38:05.that same spirit that people are relying on here today. And this

:38:06. > :38:10.evening, people will come together in the city centre to show their

:38:11. > :38:13.support in a vigil. Tough, gritty resolve is a natural response here,

:38:14. > :38:28.but it's certainly being tested. I'm joined by our correspondent

:38:29. > :38:32.Robert Hall who has been following developments. We have named today

:38:33. > :38:46.what of the fatalities Georgina Callender on

:38:47. > :38:51.left, believed to be 18 and Saffie Roussos, just eight, it is

:38:52. > :38:56.heartbreak the age of victims. I can read you a statement from Chris

:38:57. > :39:01.Upton, the headteacher at the primary school, she said "She was a

:39:02. > :39:05.beautiful girl, loved by everyone. Her warmth and kindness will be

:39:06. > :39:09.remembered fondly." Briefly, something else that is happening as

:39:10. > :39:14.we stand here. The police operation, we have been talking about it. We

:39:15. > :39:17.know that the police knew the identity of attacker, bebelieve he

:39:18. > :39:20.may be British-born, certainly a British resident. There are a number

:39:21. > :39:24.of police operations under way. We understand a number of arrests and

:39:25. > :39:27.we understand there are more to come. Statement from the police imnt

:39:28. > :39:32.na. We have been hearing -- imminent. We have been hearing about

:39:33. > :39:41.the extraordinary response here in Manchester of the emergency service,

:39:42. > :39:44.paramedics, ordinary members of the public coming to help those lost or

:39:45. > :39:48.stranded. Theresa May talked about it. People coming together. People

:39:49. > :39:52.coming out of hotels and buildings to care for the injured and help

:39:53. > :39:56.them out, to get the children to places of safety. Taxi drivers

:39:57. > :39:59.driving from as far away as Liverpool to take people home. That

:40:00. > :40:04.spirit is spreading on into the city. I think we'll see it again at

:40:05. > :40:07.the vigil at 6.00pm tonight in the main square. A vigil to remember the

:40:08. > :40:11.victims this evening, full coverage, of course on BBC News. Let's pause

:40:12. > :40:17.now and get a look at the weather prospects with Nick Miller.

:40:18. > :40:24.Dry settled weather across the UK as the high pressure is established.

:40:25. > :40:29.Temperatures set to go up as the week goes on. Not everywhere seeing

:40:30. > :40:33.the sunshine. Cloud across South Wales and south-west England where

:40:34. > :40:36.for some it is damp and drizzly. It is misty and murky in places. Cloud

:40:37. > :40:42.will increase in Northern Ireland and Scotland and in western Scotland

:40:43. > :40:46.we'll see outbreaks of rain. At 4.00pm, plenty of cloud in

:40:47. > :40:51.south-west England and Wales. Inland it might break up a bit, and get a

:40:52. > :40:55.bit brighter. Around the coast staying misty and murky. Some sunny

:40:56. > :40:59.spells in the south-east. Across north Wales, the Midlands, parts of

:41:00. > :41:02.East Anglia into northern England some of us seeing sunshine,

:41:03. > :41:05.temperatures into the low 20s. Increasing cloud for Northern

:41:06. > :41:10.Ireland and Scotland where we have a good deal of sunshine around. From

:41:11. > :41:13.that cloud, across western parts of Scotland, eventually seeing

:41:14. > :41:19.outbreaks of rain, for northern and eastern Scotland the odd shower

:41:20. > :41:26.showing up for a time. Overnight, mainly west Scotland where we'll

:41:27. > :41:30.continue with outbreaks of rain and so much patchy fog and fog around in

:41:31. > :41:34.some areas. Tomorrow if you start with cloud, you may brighten up and

:41:35. > :41:38.seeshine, if you start sunny you will see patchy cloud building. The

:41:39. > :41:41.vast majority will be dry although still some outbreaks of rain in

:41:42. > :41:43.north-west Scotland heading through the Northern Isles. In the sunshine

:41:44. > :41:49.it'll feel warmer, compared with today. Temperatures widely I think

:41:50. > :41:52.in the 20s, some spots into the mid-20s, as I mentioned earlier, the

:41:53. > :41:57.temperatures head up further as we go through the rest of the week,

:41:58. > :42:00.until at least the start of the weekend, with plenty ofshine. I

:42:01. > :42:05.shall show you the picture for Thursday. Here it is, a good deal of

:42:06. > :42:07.sunshine around. A little bit more humid, though, the temperatures just

:42:08. > :42:11.creeping up. A little bit further and some spots edging into the upper

:42:12. > :42:16.20s. Upper 20s for Friday and into at least the start of the weekend,

:42:17. > :42:20.near 30. Perhaps above for a time, this area of high pressure pushes

:42:21. > :42:24.away to the east, we drag in warmer air from the continent. More

:42:25. > :42:27.humidity with that. That is, in theshine which will lead it

:42:28. > :42:33.temperatures soaring. Again into the start of the weekend, temperatures

:42:34. > :42:37.at 30, perhaps above but uncertain, showery, under thisry breakdown, an

:42:38. > :42:40.uncertain showery thupdry coming in from the west at some stage through

:42:41. > :42:44.the weekend. We'll keep you updated. Here is the forecast for where you

:42:45. > :42:52.are and where you are going, as ever. Nick, thank you. Let me show

:42:53. > :42:55.you live pictures of the Prime Minister arriving here in

:42:56. > :42:58.Manchester. She's going to be talking to the Chief Constable of

:42:59. > :42:59.Greater Manchester Police and other senior police commanders here.

:43:00. > :43:03.Greater Manchester Police and other senior police commanders here. They

:43:04. > :43:07.will carry out the investigation into the atrocity last night at the

:43:08. > :43:10.Manchester Irina that left 22 people dead -- Manchester Arena that left

:43:11. > :43:17.22 people dead and 59 people injured. The Prime Minister's

:43:18. > :43:21.already described it as a "callous" attack on defenceless people. We

:43:22. > :43:26.know that many of the people killed and injured were young people. Two

:43:27. > :43:31.of those who've been named were eight years old and 18 years' old.

:43:32. > :43:37.Just giving you an idea of the ages of those who were only at Manchester

:43:38. > :43:42.Arena when the suicide bomber detonated his device. Well that's

:43:43. > :43:44.the latest from here in Manchester City centre. More throughout the day
