:00:00. > :00:08.Thousands of people are told to leave their homes

:00:09. > :00:12.as Tropical Storm Harvey continues to lash the state of Texas.

:00:13. > :00:15.People have been told to expect a year's rainfall in a week -

:00:16. > :00:21.up to 30,000 may need to be housed in rescue centres.

:00:22. > :00:25.We have a two-storey home, and on the first floor,

:00:26. > :00:29.it's up to here, and all the furniture's just floating.

:00:30. > :00:33.A lorry driver has appeared in court following a crash on the M1 motorway

:00:34. > :00:41.The mysterious chemical haze in East Sussex -

:00:42. > :00:47.more than 100 have been treated in hospital.

:00:48. > :00:51.The self styled guru jailed in India for raping two of his followers -

:00:52. > :00:55.his conviction led to dozens of people dying in violent clashes.

:00:56. > :01:04.And I am here at Notting Hill Carnival where organisers are paying

:01:05. > :01:05.tribute to those affected by the Grenfell Tower blaze here in west

:01:06. > :01:22.London. Ten of thousands of people living

:01:23. > :01:29.in the US state of Texas have been ordered to leave their homes,

:01:30. > :01:31.as flooding caused by Tropical Storm Harvey continues

:01:32. > :01:35.to cause devastation. It's expected up to 30,000 people

:01:36. > :01:39.may need temporary emergency shelters with more than two

:01:40. > :01:42.and a half feet of rain fallen Unconfirmed reports suggest up

:01:43. > :01:47.to five people may have drowned - but officials say they can't confirm

:01:48. > :01:49.figures until the Thousands of people have had to be

:01:50. > :01:53.rescued, many plucked Taking only what they can hold,

:01:54. > :02:03.the people of Houston are trying Three days of torrential rain

:02:04. > :02:09.and the most powerful hurricane in 50 years have left this city

:02:10. > :02:13.struggling to cope. An armada of rescue boats

:02:14. > :02:16.is patrolling the streets. More than 2,000 people have

:02:17. > :02:20.been rescued so far, but the emergency services say

:02:21. > :02:23.they have had at least 5,000 calls We have a two-storey home,

:02:24. > :02:29.and on the first floor, it's up to here, and all the furniture

:02:30. > :02:32.is just floating. With the roads flooded

:02:33. > :02:43.and dangerous, people have been told to stay in their homes and wait

:02:44. > :02:46.for rescue there, but inevitably many have been trying

:02:47. > :02:48.to flee on their own, risking their lives

:02:49. > :02:51.to find higher ground. But those at the edge of the flood's

:02:52. > :02:55.reach know that they will be next We know a couple of houses saying

:02:56. > :03:09.they are going to ride it out. The owner of this care home

:03:10. > :03:12.photographed the rising flood. Her daughter tweeted

:03:13. > :03:16.it, pleading for help. She said within ten to 15 minutes,

:03:17. > :03:20.the water went from ankle-high to waist-high, so immediately

:03:21. > :03:24.they were under water and floating. The National Guard saw

:03:25. > :03:28.the photo, and eventually But there are many others

:03:29. > :03:33.still waiting for rescue, perched on rooftops,

:03:34. > :03:35.calling for help. Helicopters are patrolling the city

:03:36. > :03:39.to coordinate the rescue effort. They have been pulling

:03:40. > :03:41.people from the flood, too, but it is a slow

:03:42. > :03:45.and dangerous process. And Houston's problems

:03:46. > :03:50.are only going to get worse. Parts of those regions will continue

:03:51. > :03:55.to receive incredibly heavy rain that will lead to even more flooding

:03:56. > :04:01.and more danger for Texans. These floods are turning into some

:04:02. > :04:04.of the worst in America's history. Thousands of people

:04:05. > :04:07.have been displaced. Billions of dollars' worth

:04:08. > :04:09.of property has been destroyed or damaged with,

:04:10. > :04:11.as yet, an unknown Brexit Secretary David Davis

:04:12. > :04:19.and government officials return to Brussels today,

:04:20. > :04:22.for the latest round of Mr Davis says he'd like the EU

:04:23. > :04:27.to show more 'flexibility and Damian Grammaticas is in Brussels

:04:28. > :04:42.for us this lunchtime. How is that likely to go down? I

:04:43. > :04:45.think the EU side will be sticking to its position. David Davis has

:04:46. > :04:49.said he wants flexibility and imagination as you say, part of the

:04:50. > :04:55.thinking behind that is that what he wants to do is push the EU more

:04:56. > :04:59.towards looking at the future trading relationships, with the EU

:05:00. > :05:06.side I think will be more reluctant to do that, they cannot do that at

:05:07. > :05:09.the minute. At 4pm when things begin here, Michel Barnier can only talk

:05:10. > :05:14.legally about what the 27 nations have empowered him to discuss around

:05:15. > :05:18.the table and he has said that on Twitter, those are the issues of

:05:19. > :05:24.citizens rights, financial obligations of the UK, the Irish

:05:25. > :05:29.border. What he wants he says is legal certainty and that is what the

:05:30. > :05:35.EU's approach to the negotiations, but it's all so say they will only

:05:36. > :05:38.move on once they think there is sufficient progress on those areas

:05:39. > :05:42.and I think they will stick to that. Thank you very much.

:05:43. > :05:45.A lorry driver has appeared in court following a crash on the M1 motorway

:05:46. > :05:49.Two lorries and a minibus were involved in the collision

:05:50. > :05:52.Our correspondent Andy Moore is at High Wycombe Magistrates

:05:53. > :06:05.This was the first court appearance for Ryszard Masierak who is 31 and

:06:06. > :06:09.lives in Evesham in Worcestershire, he is originally from Poland saw

:06:10. > :06:12.this court case lasted about half an hour and saw the proceedings go

:06:13. > :06:16.through an interpreter. He was denied bail and remanded in custody

:06:17. > :06:19.to appear at Aylesbury Crown Court next month.

:06:20. > :06:22.Ryszard Masierak blinked back the tears and was given a tissue

:06:23. > :06:24.as all 20 charges were put to him through an interpreter.

:06:25. > :06:26.Afterwards, Thames Valley Police made a brief statement.

:06:27. > :06:35.Four people who were injured remain in a serious condition in hospital.

:06:36. > :06:38.We've had full cooperation from the two freight companies

:06:39. > :06:42.involved, and they are fully supporting us with our enquiries.

:06:43. > :06:46.Our thoughts remain very much with those affected by this tragedy.

:06:47. > :06:50.Mr Masierak was driving an AIM Logistics lorry

:06:51. > :06:54.12 people were in the minibus when the collision happened in

:06:55. > :07:00.Tributes have been paid to the driver, Cyriac Joseph.

:07:01. > :07:03.He's been described as an extraordinary father and a great

:07:04. > :07:06.leader within the southern Indian community in Nottingham.

:07:07. > :07:08.His passengers were a group of people from India

:07:09. > :07:14.Three of the dead worked for an IT company.

:07:15. > :07:17.The other lorry driver, David Wagstaff, who's 53

:07:18. > :07:19.and from Stoke-on-Trent, has been bailed to appear

:07:20. > :07:24.He's been charged with 12 counts of causing death or serious injury

:07:25. > :07:32.About 150 people have now been treated in hospital

:07:33. > :07:36.in Eastbourne in East Sussex after falling ill as a result

:07:37. > :07:38.of a mysterious chemical "haze" which drifted in from the sea

:07:39. > :07:43.Amanda Akass is at Birling Gap, the area near Beachy Head

:07:44. > :07:54.Amanda has anyone got any idea yet what this haze was?

:07:55. > :08:00.I have spoken to the emergency services and they are still unclear

:08:01. > :08:04.as to what exactly this toxic gas cloud was and where it came from.

:08:05. > :08:08.Some speculation it could have come from some kind of chemical leak in

:08:09. > :08:12.northern France, something like that happened a few years ago and strong

:08:13. > :08:16.smells worse melt across the south-east but Sussex Police say the

:08:17. > :08:21.weather conditions yesterday make that unlikely. There have also been

:08:22. > :08:24.reports there was a ship seen offshore off-loading something that

:08:25. > :08:32.has been reported to the police and the coastguard say they are checking

:08:33. > :08:35.all the vessels in the area at the time. As to what the substance was,

:08:36. > :08:38.the Fire Service say they do not think it was chlorine but it was

:08:39. > :08:41.causing distress to people suffering from streaming eyes, sore throats,

:08:42. > :08:45.vomiting and people were queueing outside the Eastbourne Hospital

:08:46. > :08:49.through the night. But the hospital said when everyone was treated they

:08:50. > :08:51.were mainly suffering from merely minor effects and nobody had to be

:08:52. > :08:56.admitted. Thank you very much Amanda A controversial religious leader

:08:57. > :09:02.in India has been sentenced to ten years in prison for raping two

:09:03. > :09:04.of his followers. Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh's conviction

:09:05. > :09:06.last week triggered large scale riots by his devotees in which 38

:09:07. > :09:09.people were killed. Thousands of police have been

:09:10. > :09:11.deployed to the region where the guru's movement is based

:09:12. > :09:13.amid fears of further unrest. The town where the controversial

:09:14. > :09:20.self-styled Guru is being held was After the explosion of violence that

:09:21. > :09:29.followed his conviction on two rape charges last week, the Indian

:09:30. > :09:32.authorities say they are taking no But this is the real

:09:33. > :09:36.focus of concern today. The town in which the vast

:09:37. > :09:38.temple complex that serves as Guru Ram Rahim's

:09:39. > :09:51.headquarters is based. this car was torched by an angry

:09:52. > :09:54.crowd within minutes of the ten year sentence being announced.

:09:55. > :09:56.Are your troops ready to besiege the temple complex if necessary?

:09:57. > :09:59.We are fully equipped, fully ready and fully trained.

:10:00. > :10:00.Whatever directions are given, we'll implement it.

:10:01. > :10:03.As of now, we are going step-by-step, and the first step

:10:04. > :10:07.is to maintain the peace and calm so that curfew is relaxed.

:10:08. > :10:14.Guru Ram Rahim is a flamboyant and controversial figure,

:10:15. > :10:18.who stars in his own movies and command extraordinary support.

:10:19. > :10:21.His claim that he has 60 million followers worldwide

:10:22. > :10:25.may be an exaggeration, but perhaps as many

:10:26. > :10:27.as 15,000 hard-core devotees are believed to be holed up

:10:28. > :10:34.The Army has been warning people to leave the temple.

:10:35. > :10:38.The authorities have ordered that the guru's assets,

:10:39. > :10:41.including the temple complex be seized, but from what we've seen,

:10:42. > :10:45.the devotees are not ready to give it up without a fight,

:10:46. > :10:50.so a siege situation is developing here in north India.

:10:51. > :10:59.German prosecutors say a nurse who is serving a life sentence

:11:00. > :11:01.for murdering two patients, may have killed 84 others.

:11:02. > :11:03.Niels Hoegel was convicted and jailed two years ago -

:11:04. > :11:06.for giving lethal drug injections to intensive care patients.

:11:07. > :11:09.Investigators have exhumed more than 100 bodies

:11:10. > :11:13.of patients who died in clinics where Hoegel worked.

:11:14. > :11:17.A year ago today BHS closed it's doors for the last time

:11:18. > :11:24.12 months on only 25 of the company's 160 stores have

:11:25. > :11:27.new owners including the likes of Primark, TK Maxx and Morleys -

:11:28. > :11:29.Our business correspondent Emma Simpson has been

:11:30. > :11:42.BHS, one of the best-known names on the high street.

:11:43. > :11:45.It had its heyday, but this time last year, nearly 90 years

:11:46. > :11:48.And the question, who would fill this gap?

:11:49. > :11:59.At this shopping centre, a shiny new department store.

:12:00. > :12:01.And new jobs for these two former BHS workers.

:12:02. > :12:05.We couldn't get anyone in to fix anything for BHS, but now we've got

:12:06. > :12:12.It is like moving out of a house, having it refurbished

:12:13. > :12:15.For us, it's's like a home from home.

:12:16. > :12:18.Whatever was going on in in this building, we would be interested.

:12:19. > :12:28.The fact that we both work here is amazing.

:12:29. > :12:31.It'ss a good outcome here, but what has happened to the other

:12:32. > :12:36.More than half are still sitting empty.

:12:37. > :12:44.35 properties have deals or plans in place.

:12:45. > :12:49.Only 25 of the former BHS stores have so far been reoccupied.

:12:50. > :12:54.I am not surprised that a vast majority are unoccupied,

:12:55. > :13:00.many of them are very large and costly to reoccupy,

:13:01. > :13:04.and they are in marginal towns where there is a lot of competition

:13:05. > :13:08.Those retailers who would normally have been there in the past

:13:09. > :13:16.I have lived in Stockport all my life, I remember

:13:17. > :13:19.being dragged around on a Saturday morning with my mum.

:13:20. > :13:28.It would never be a complete visit without coming to BHS.

:13:29. > :13:33.The council is spending millions on improving the town centre.

:13:34. > :13:35.It's leader is convinced a solution can be found.

:13:36. > :13:37.It is a shame, because it is actually

:13:38. > :13:46.We feel there is a lot of potential interest in this building.

:13:47. > :13:48.I think there is an incredible opportunity.

:13:49. > :13:54.But they may need to come up with something creative

:13:55. > :13:59.The same goes for many of the other former BHS stores

:14:00. > :14:12.Thousands of people are descending on west London for the second day

:14:13. > :14:15.Organisers are expecting a million visitors over both days.

:14:16. > :14:18.Yesterday a minute's silence was observed in memory

:14:19. > :14:20.for those killed in the fire at Grenfell Tower,

:14:21. > :14:36.A million people are expected to come here over the next two days,

:14:37. > :14:41.yesterday Carnival was opened with the ceremony, multi-faith prayer at

:14:42. > :14:45.was given and doves released as a mark of respect to those affected by

:14:46. > :14:50.the Grenfell Tower will blaze back in June. A minutes silence was held

:14:51. > :14:55.at three o'clock yesterday and the same will be done again today at 3pm

:14:56. > :15:00.but as you can see behind me organisers are very much about

:15:01. > :15:02.mixing the visit of the these and fun, colourful costumes and

:15:03. > :15:08.masquerades as well as marking tributes to those affected by

:15:09. > :15:12.Grenfell Tower. Metropolitan Police so far 122 people arrested but the

:15:13. > :15:17.London Ambulance Service are saying they treated 422 people, 70 of which

:15:18. > :15:19.were taken to hospital and the are urging people to drink lots of

:15:20. > :15:22.water. Some cricket and England have lost

:15:23. > :15:24.the prize wicket of Joe Root on the morning of fourth day

:15:25. > :15:27.of the second test against The England captain was caught

:15:28. > :15:31.for 72, as England attempt to extend their slender lead

:15:32. > :15:36.over the tourists. At lunch England are 251-4, a lead

:15:37. > :15:43.of 82. Now it's certainly not cricket

:15:44. > :15:45.but it's terminology can be just as confusing -

:15:46. > :15:47.with it's 'quaffle', You may have thought the game

:15:48. > :15:55.of Quidditch was confined But it's actually been brought

:15:56. > :15:59.to life as a real sport and this weekend the British championships

:16:00. > :16:01.were held in Hull. We put Colin Paterson

:16:02. > :16:04.on a broomstick and sent him along. Created by JK Rowling, and very much

:16:05. > :16:10.Harry Potter's favourite sport. Eight teams battling it out

:16:11. > :16:17.for the Quidditch We've got lots of the general

:16:18. > :16:22.public coming down today, and getting to see them come along,

:16:23. > :16:25.watch the sport and be like, wow, When you get hit by it,

:16:26. > :16:39.you have to go and tag into your hoops before you can

:16:40. > :16:41.do anything useful. If you catch it, your team gets

:16:42. > :16:53.30 points and ends the game. And for the players,

:16:54. > :16:56.all this is done with one If you get hit by a Bludger,

:16:57. > :17:02.or if it comes from between your legs at any time, then you have

:17:03. > :17:06.to go tag back in at your hoops. How much easier would it

:17:07. > :17:08.be if you could fly? So much easier, but I think health

:17:09. > :17:12.and safety would have a field day! It was clear to see just how

:17:13. > :17:19.seriously teams were taking it. This is a Quidditch

:17:20. > :17:21.pre-match team talk. Many of the players

:17:22. > :17:31.were attracted to the sport Probably like up

:17:32. > :17:35.the top end of fans. Like, I'm a massive

:17:36. > :17:37.Harry Potter fan. Quidditch is this,

:17:38. > :17:42.and Harry Potter is this. I've never read the books,

:17:43. > :17:46.and I'm the age as well. It surprises quite a lot

:17:47. > :17:48.of people I play with. And so to the final -

:17:49. > :17:54.West Midlands Revolution And the Revolution were presented

:17:55. > :18:03.with a trophy that was Well, one day, it could be a case of

:18:04. > :18:18.Harry Potter And The Olympic Sport. The next news on BBC One is at 6pm -

:18:19. > :18:21.until then do enjoy your afternoon.
