0:01:48 > 0:01:50As England lose the first Test Jonny Bairstow tells the media

0:01:50 > 0:01:51his head-butt of an Aussie opponent was just a joke.

0:02:13 > 0:02:17Good afternoon, and welcome to the BBC News at One.

0:02:17 > 0:02:22I'm here at Kensington Palace

0:02:22 > 0:02:23which from next Spring

0:02:23 > 0:02:30will become the London home of Prince Harry an his new bride.

0:02:30 > 0:02:36The news came just in the last three hours. It was something that had

0:02:36 > 0:02:40been speculated at lot in recent days and weeks. In the last few

0:02:40 > 0:02:53hours it has become at Bristol. -- has become official. The Queen and

0:02:53 > 0:02:56the Duke of Edinburgh in a statement from Buckingham Palace said they

0:02:56 > 0:03:02were absolutely delighted with the news. Our first report comes from

0:03:02 > 0:03:08our royal correspondent Nicholas Witchel.

0:03:08 > 0:03:11They've known each other for rather less than 18 months and they've done

0:03:11 > 0:03:14their best to remain out of sight of the media.

0:03:14 > 0:03:16This was an exception when they were seen hand-in-hand at the

0:03:16 > 0:03:18Invictus Games in Toronto earlier this year.

0:03:18 > 0:03:21But now they are to be married with the wedding planned for

0:03:21 > 0:03:22the spring of next year.

0:03:22 > 0:03:24The news was given in a statement from

0:03:24 > 0:03:25Clarence House at ten o'clock.

0:03:25 > 0:03:27His Royal Highness Prince Henry of Wales

0:03:27 > 0:03:29and Miss Meghan Markle are engaged to be married.

0:03:29 > 0:03:32News of the engagement has been greeted with pleasure within

0:03:32 > 0:03:34the Royal Family, the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh who celebrated

0:03:34 > 0:03:37their 70th wedding anniversary last week said they were

0:03:37 > 0:03:38delighted for the couple and

0:03:38 > 0:03:41wish them every happiness.

0:03:41 > 0:03:43Those who have seen the couple together say they

0:03:43 > 0:03:44are very much in love.

0:03:44 > 0:03:46That much was confirmed recently by Meghan Markle

0:03:46 > 0:03:48herself, in an interview with Vanity fair magazine

0:03:48 > 0:03:50she declared, 'we are a

0:03:50 > 0:03:54couple, we are in love.'

0:03:54 > 0:03:56For Harry, the engagement brings to an end the

0:03:56 > 0:04:00bachelor life which he has led and enjoyed for a good many years.

0:04:00 > 0:04:03Whilst all the time seeking someone with whom he could settle down and

0:04:03 > 0:04:04start a family.

0:04:04 > 0:04:07Twice it had seemed he had found the right person,

0:04:07 > 0:04:10Chelsea Davey, born in Zimbabwe, educated in Britain was his

0:04:10 > 0:04:14girlfriend for six years up to 2010 and then there was Cressida Bonas,

0:04:14 > 0:04:23young actress and aristocratic British family who was with Harry

0:04:23 > 0:04:25young actress from an aristocratic British family who was with Harry

0:04:25 > 0:04:27for two years until 2014.

0:04:27 > 0:04:28In both cases the relationships foundered at

0:04:28 > 0:04:30least in part because of the intense media scrutiny.

0:04:30 > 0:04:33That scrutiny may be something Meghan Markle is better

0:04:33 > 0:04:34prepared to deal with.

0:04:34 > 0:04:36Wow, you're pretty.

0:04:36 > 0:04:39Good, you've hit on me, you can get it out of the way that I'm

0:04:39 > 0:04:40not interested.

0:04:40 > 0:04:42As an American actress with several high-profile

0:04:42 > 0:04:44roles, she is used to the public spotlight.

0:04:48 > 0:04:50Beyond her acting career there are significant other

0:04:50 > 0:04:51dimensions to Meghan Markle's life.

0:04:51 > 0:04:54I'm smart and I know...

0:04:54 > 0:04:56She's described herself as a strong woman

0:04:56 > 0:04:57of mixed-race.

0:04:57 > 0:05:00Her father is of Irish descent, her mother is an

0:05:00 > 0:05:02African-American.

0:05:02 > 0:05:05She's been active in humanitarian campaigns and is a

0:05:05 > 0:05:09UN advocate for the empowerment of women.

0:05:09 > 0:05:15I am proud to be a woman and a feminist.

0:05:16 > 0:05:19For Harry, an engagement finally offers the

0:05:19 > 0:05:24prospect of the personal fulfilment which at times has seemed elusive.

0:05:24 > 0:05:26As any girl would ever tell you it's, oh my

0:05:26 > 0:05:28God, he's a prince...

0:05:28 > 0:05:33This was him in a US television interview in 2012.

0:05:33 > 0:05:36Look at me, I'm 27 years old and not so much

0:05:36 > 0:05:39searching for someone to fulfil the role but obviously finding

0:05:39 > 0:05:41someone that would be willing to take it on.

0:05:41 > 0:05:45Harry has finally found that special person.

0:05:45 > 0:05:49We're going to look at privacy and harassment law...

0:05:49 > 0:05:50One of the couple's immediate challenges

0:05:50 > 0:05:52will be to find some privacy.

0:05:52 > 0:05:55In a statement soon after the relationship became public Harry

0:05:55 > 0:06:02said, this isn't a game, it is his and this

0:06:02 > 0:06:06said, this isn't a game, it is his and Miss Markle's life, a life which

0:06:06 > 0:06:08in her case, is about to take a remarkable

0:06:08 > 0:06:09change of direction as

0:06:09 > 0:06:11she prepares to join the British Royal family.

0:06:11 > 0:06:13Nicholas Witchell, BBC News.

0:06:13 > 0:06:18Meghan Markle is best know for playing Rachel Zane

0:06:18 > 0:06:23in the US TV drama Suits.

0:06:23 > 0:06:27She was born on the 4th August 1981 and grew up in Los Angeles.

0:06:27 > 0:06:31Our Royal correspondent Daniella Relph reports

0:06:31 > 0:06:41on the actress who will soon be a member of the royal family.

0:06:41 > 0:06:47This is no ordinary royal engagement. Meghan Markle, an

0:06:47 > 0:06:50American, an actress, a divorcee and a campaigner. She grew up in an

0:06:50 > 0:06:55argument never heard of Los Angeles, went to a private Catholic school,

0:06:55 > 0:07:00she is mixed-race, the daughter of divorced parents, her daughter --

0:07:00 > 0:07:06mother a yoga teacher, her father in respect had lighting director. There

0:07:06 > 0:07:10is no question over her ability to cope with her new status. She

0:07:10 > 0:07:16handles herself with poise and grace. As I said, it's a great

0:07:16 > 0:07:21tribute to the way she handles herself, she doesn't seem to be

0:07:21 > 0:07:25preoccupied, influenced by the fact that she is going to be a member of

0:07:25 > 0:07:29the Royal family. And in the area her mother now lives there have been

0:07:29 > 0:07:35many offers of wedding help.Great, love it. I want to be a bridesmaid!

0:07:35 > 0:07:40I think it would be nice, different, the first of a kind, I think it's

0:07:40 > 0:07:46something the community can embrace. I'm ecstatic and I would love to do

0:07:46 > 0:07:50a fascinator or a hat for her or even her wedding peace. As an

0:07:50 > 0:07:55actress her early career included adverts. And a stint opening the

0:07:55 > 0:08:00boxes on the TV programme deal or no Deal. Before her big break in the

0:08:00 > 0:08:05show suits. But alongside her acting has been heard humanitarian work,

0:08:05 > 0:08:10focused on young women and gender equality. That interest in

0:08:10 > 0:08:14campaigning was common ground with her husband to be. But in the early

0:08:14 > 0:08:18days of their relationship some of the media coverage and settled the

0:08:18 > 0:08:21couple, Prince Harry issued a statement describing it as having

0:08:21 > 0:08:27racial undertones. It definitely felt very coded and very racist to

0:08:27 > 0:08:31me and furry much like there was an attempt to make cursing like an

0:08:31 > 0:08:37other, and outsider. Yes, that was pretty startling.Meghan Markle's

0:08:37 > 0:08:43background is unlike any other senior member of the Royal Family,

0:08:43 > 0:08:45she will have to navigate life inside the British aristocracy. It

0:08:45 > 0:08:52is a path trodden by Julie Montague of Illinois, she married the son of

0:08:52 > 0:08:58the Earl of Sandwich.Marrying into this real old British aristocratic

0:08:58 > 0:09:03family, you know I have had to I guess, sort of touch up on my

0:09:03 > 0:09:09manners. When I rode over here I was much more an open book, married into

0:09:09 > 0:09:13the British aristocracy I realised you have to, you have to close down

0:09:13 > 0:09:18a little but further his reasons. This will be a whole new world for

0:09:18 > 0:09:22Meghan Markle, one of great privilege but with it, will come

0:09:22 > 0:09:27great scrutiny.

0:09:27 > 0:09:29As we've heard Buckingham Palace said the Queen and the Duke

0:09:29 > 0:09:32of Edinburgh were "delighted for the couple" and wished

0:09:32 > 0:09:39them every happiness.

0:09:39 > 0:09:46The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge said it had been "wonderful

0:09:46 > 0:09:48getting to know Meghan" while the Prince of Wales

0:09:48 > 0:09:49said he was thrilled.

0:09:49 > 0:09:56David Sillito has more.

0:09:56 > 0:09:59Prince Charles was Albus morning looking at community and green

0:09:59 > 0:10:04initiatives. The first topic was of course... Congratulations sir, what

0:10:04 > 0:10:09do you think about the engagement? Thank you, very thrilled, thank you

0:10:09 > 0:10:12brain much, for both of them, I hope they will be very happy indeed, that

0:10:12 > 0:10:17is all I can say.The Prime Minister offered her warmest congratulations,

0:10:17 > 0:10:21she says it's a time of huge celebration for two people in love

0:10:21 > 0:10:25and Jeremy Corbyn at his press conference, the first matter to be

0:10:25 > 0:10:30addressed was the engagement.Look, first of all, my congratulations to

0:10:30 > 0:10:34Harry and Megan, I wish them well, I hope they have a great time and

0:10:34 > 0:10:38great fun together and having met Harry a couple of times I am sure

0:10:38 > 0:10:44they are going to have a great deal of fun together.A big engagement

0:10:44 > 0:10:46announcement from Kensington Palace, Prince Harry and American actress

0:10:46 > 0:10:50naked Markle are engaged. Unsurprisingly the engagement was

0:10:50 > 0:10:58headline news in America.Ricky news out of London, drum roll please,

0:10:58 > 0:11:03Prince Harry and American Meghan Markle arrogated to be married.Hip

0:11:03 > 0:11:07hip, array, congratulations. It even managed to bring smiles out on the

0:11:07 > 0:11:10street of a damp and great Monday. So thrilled, wonderful news. Really

0:11:10 > 0:11:21great.Ayew excited they are getting married spring 2018?Yes, lovely.

0:11:21 > 0:11:26What do you think about it? I think it's great, another royal wedding,

0:11:26 > 0:11:31something to look forward to in times of trouble.Maybe it will make

0:11:31 > 0:11:36my bloke proposed to me now so we can have a joint one.

0:11:36 > 0:11:41Congratulations to Prince Harry and whatever her name is.Meghan Markle.

0:11:41 > 0:11:45Have a happy and long life together. The Archbishop of Canterbury also

0:11:45 > 0:11:53said he was absolutely delighted. Cheerful news headline for once.

0:11:59 > 0:12:02I immediate correspondence there were three action on both sides of

0:12:02 > 0:12:06the Atlantic. We have to behave just little differently on British

0:12:06 > 0:12:11television but we are having continuing coverage of this that the

0:12:11 > 0:12:16big news story and we await the photocall later this afternoon. For

0:12:16 > 0:12:19now, from Kensington Palace, back to you.

0:12:19 > 0:12:24Well lets get more from our Royal Correspondent Daniela Relph.

0:12:24 > 0:12:28He is fifth in line to the throne, when he is married, he could be six

0:12:28 > 0:12:33line, this will a greater -- Frank royal marriage.I think so and you

0:12:33 > 0:12:39can see that with his choice of bright, Meghan Markle is divorced,

0:12:39 > 0:12:44independent, in her late 30s, a point of view, divorced, not the

0:12:44 > 0:12:49daughter of an aristocrat. Together as a couple they will have a greater

0:12:49 > 0:12:53degree of freedom. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge for one day be

0:12:53 > 0:12:57queen, but will not be the case for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, they

0:12:57 > 0:13:01will be able to cut their path and do things differently, we may see

0:13:01 > 0:13:06that with the choice of wedding they have. They could go for the big

0:13:06 > 0:13:09Westminster Abbey occasion, they may feel they want to do something

0:13:09 > 0:13:13smaller, different in terms of how they approach that and I think

0:13:13 > 0:13:17together we are going to see a lot of freedom in terms of the kind of

0:13:17 > 0:13:21work they do. They clearly are going to forge quite a powerful

0:13:21 > 0:13:25partnership when it comes to charity and humanitarian work and I think a

0:13:25 > 0:13:30lot of focus will go on that going forward.Thank you very much. Two

0:13:30 > 0:13:32other news now.

0:13:32 > 0:13:35Two pharmaceutical firms - one American, the other German -

0:13:35 > 0:13:38have said they will invest more than a BILLION pounds in the UK -

0:13:38 > 0:13:39creating more than 18-hundred jobs.

0:13:39 > 0:13:41The government said these biotech deals illustrated confidence

0:13:41 > 0:13:43it its industrial strategy - aimed at supporting more

0:13:43 > 0:13:45research and development, encouraging firms to embrace

0:13:45 > 0:13:46new technology, and boosting the economy.

0:13:46 > 0:13:53Our economics correspondent Andy Verity reports.

0:13:53 > 0:13:57High levels of investment harnessing cutting edge ideas, the robots at

0:13:57 > 0:14:00this commentary Manufacturing Centre cost millions to design and

0:14:00 > 0:14:04programme and the car door as they turn that can compete across the

0:14:04 > 0:14:07world. With Britain's weak productivity record innovation like

0:14:07 > 0:14:13this is very much the rule.We look at how we translate good ideas from

0:14:13 > 0:14:19academia and take them into industry and if we can utilise bat for other

0:14:19 > 0:14:22sectors including things like infrastructure and construction I

0:14:22 > 0:14:26think we have a great opportunity for the future. The government chose

0:14:26 > 0:14:30a biomedical research Institute as the venue for its industrial

0:14:30 > 0:14:34strategy launch, including bigger tax breaks to encourage innovative

0:14:34 > 0:14:38ideas, be skilling people with better at maths and technical

0:14:38 > 0:14:41education, investment in infrastructure like five G,

0:14:41 > 0:14:43improving the business environment through partnerships with

0:14:43 > 0:14:47environments like life sciences and making places were productive with

0:14:47 > 0:14:52better transport links. On the basis of setting that out in the strategy

0:14:52 > 0:14:56document these companies already recognise this is a long-term

0:14:56 > 0:14:59strategy, have confidence in it and are making big investment decisions

0:14:59 > 0:15:04today that create good jobs around the country. But it's not in

0:15:04 > 0:15:08high-tech industries but low-tech, low-wage companies that productivity

0:15:08 > 0:15:13is weakest. The new money announced today, 725 million is spread over

0:15:13 > 0:15:19three years, compare it to total spending of 780 billion, it's a

0:15:19 > 0:15:25small fraction, just 0.03%.They talk about industrial strategy they

0:15:25 > 0:15:28focus on high-tech sectors let pharmaceuticals, life sciences,

0:15:28 > 0:15:33there is space and automotive. Productivity is high already. The

0:15:33 > 0:15:37problem we have is in the rest of the economy, the everyday economy,

0:15:37 > 0:15:43sectors like retail, tourism and hospitality, for productivity is

0:15:43 > 0:15:46considerably worse than most European competitors, tremendous

0:15:46 > 0:15:51variation between firms and that's really worthy effort needs to go.

0:15:51 > 0:15:53Many private companies have funds to invest in skills and technology that

0:15:53 > 0:15:58could boost worker productivity but since the financial crash directors

0:15:58 > 0:16:02have an uncertain will be be enough demand for the goods for that

0:16:02 > 0:16:06investment to pay off and with Brexit looming, overcoming that

0:16:06 > 0:16:16uncertainty isn't getting any easier. Andy Verity, BBC News.

0:16:16 > 0:16:20With Finau is our business editor. This White Paper long in the

0:16:20 > 0:16:26waiting. What have we learned today? Five sectors, five leaders that the

0:16:26 > 0:16:29government can pull. The government sticks in a bit of money for

0:16:29 > 0:16:34research and development. It asks the academic institutions in a

0:16:34 > 0:16:38certain area to cluster round it, then they let these different

0:16:38 > 0:16:43centres to have test-beds for their stuff. In life sciences, that might

0:16:43 > 0:16:48be accelerated accept and of new drugs by the NHS, which is something

0:16:48 > 0:16:52they have committed to. For driverless cars, it might be using

0:16:52 > 0:17:00public streets. They put this in place, and then private investment

0:17:00 > 0:17:05poured in. They would say that this morning's announcement is the

0:17:05 > 0:17:09industrial action. It needs to work. We learned last week in the budget

0:17:09 > 0:17:15that things are tough. We learned a couple of things last week, just how

0:17:15 > 0:17:19difficult the economic challenges are. Abysmal productivity and

0:17:19 > 0:17:24growth. Growth downgraded. They are hoping this will cure those economic

0:17:24 > 0:17:28ills, and you have Brexit round the corner. They say they have been

0:17:28 > 0:17:39working on this for a long time. In the old day, a concerted industrial

0:17:39 > 0:17:42strategy, they wouldn't have liked the sound of that. But they now say

0:17:42 > 0:17:44it's necessary, and with Brexit round the corner, it is urgent.

0:17:44 > 0:17:46Thank you.

0:17:46 > 0:17:50The families of five people killed when a stolen car crashed in Leeds

0:17:50 > 0:17:52at the weekend have paid tribute to their loved ones -

0:17:52 > 0:17:55three of the victims were teenagers.

0:17:55 > 0:17:57Two 15-year-old boys remain in custody on suspicion of causing

0:17:57 > 0:17:58death by dangerous driving.

0:17:58 > 0:17:59Our correspondent Danny Savage reports.

0:17:59 > 0:18:01At the scene of Saturday night's crash,

0:18:01 > 0:18:03the police were still searching this morning for any evidence.

0:18:03 > 0:18:08Why did the stolen car career off this straight road?

0:18:08 > 0:18:10The tree it hit bears the scars of the devastating

0:18:10 > 0:18:13impact which killed five.

0:18:13 > 0:18:19The tragedy of young people, it's immensely sad.

0:18:19 > 0:18:22Whatever the rights or wrongs of those involved, there's a feeling

0:18:22 > 0:18:28of shock that so many young lives could be lost in a single crash.

0:18:28 > 0:18:31It's hard to get your head round, really, that so many people

0:18:31 > 0:18:35were killed so suddenly, and this road will never

0:18:35 > 0:18:38be the same for me.

0:18:38 > 0:18:42When I think about it and come up here, this memory.

0:18:42 > 0:18:46In view of what's happened, we simply feel sympathy

0:18:46 > 0:18:51and want to be alongside those who've lost their loved ones.

0:18:51 > 0:18:55Named locally, the youngest victims were Ellis and Elliott Thornton,

0:18:55 > 0:18:59who were brothers, aged just 12 and 14.

0:18:59 > 0:19:03Also in the car was 15-year-old Darnell Harte, along

0:19:03 > 0:19:06with 24-year-old Robbie Meerun, and father of two Anthoney

0:19:06 > 0:19:11Armour, who was also 24.

0:19:11 > 0:19:13The Renault Clio was stolen, and some of the victims

0:19:13 > 0:19:15were known to police.

0:19:15 > 0:19:18It's also understood there were seven people in a car

0:19:18 > 0:19:22designed to carry a maximum of five passengers.

0:19:22 > 0:19:27The two survivors, both 15, were arrested on Saturday night.

0:19:27 > 0:19:30The full reasons why this crash happened may not be

0:19:30 > 0:19:32known for some time.

0:19:32 > 0:19:35Detailed work needs to be carried out, as the families of those

0:19:35 > 0:19:37who died try to deal with the aftermath.

0:19:37 > 0:19:43Danny Savage, BBC News, Leeds.

0:19:43 > 0:19:46Our top story this lunchtime.

0:19:46 > 0:19:48Prince Harry is to marry American actress Meghan Markle

0:19:48 > 0:19:50in the Spring of next year.

0:19:50 > 0:19:53In a statement, Buckingham Palace said the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh

0:19:53 > 0:20:03were 'delighted' at the news.

0:20:03 > 0:20:09Coming up, a dropping down under as England lose the first Ashes Test by

0:20:09 > 0:20:14ten wickets. In sport, England's Eddie Jones has been named coach of

0:20:14 > 0:20:18the year in Monaco. He beat Warren Gatland and New Zealand's Steve

0:20:18 > 0:20:21Hansen.

0:20:23 > 0:20:24The Indonesian authorities have urged people living

0:20:24 > 0:20:27near Mount Agung - a volcano on the island of Bali -

0:20:27 > 0:20:30to move to safety, because of fears it's about to erupt.

0:20:30 > 0:20:33Last night the island's main airport in the captial Denpasar

0:20:33 > 0:20:36was shut, leaving thousands of tourists stranded.

0:20:36 > 0:20:40Officials have ordered that 100,000 residents need to leave

0:20:40 > 0:20:43the immediate area around the Volcano, but so far only

0:20:43 > 0:20:4540,000 have done so.

0:20:45 > 0:20:49The volcano first began belching thick smoke last week.

0:20:49 > 0:20:51The last time it erupted, in 1963,

0:20:51 > 0:20:53more than 1,000 people died.

0:20:53 > 0:21:00Tom Burridge reports on the latest.

0:21:00 > 0:21:09A giant cloud of rocks, glass, crystal and gas spews out of Bali's

0:21:09 > 0:21:16tallest volcano. Mount Agung started staring two months ago, but the

0:21:16 > 0:21:23force of nature here has taken another unpredictable turn.I'm very

0:21:23 > 0:21:27concerned for the people within the exclusion zones. I really hope they

0:21:27 > 0:21:31manage to get out of the way. The biggest worries are the mudflows

0:21:31 > 0:21:41which began several hours ago now. If this develops and starts to

0:21:41 > 0:21:43produce hot, rapidly moving avalanches down the volcano, that is

0:21:43 > 0:21:51a very big concern.Life does go one nearby. Many remain here even as the

0:21:51 > 0:21:58authorities work to evacuate 100,000 people. The hope, that there will

0:21:58 > 0:22:01not be the death and destruction brought by Mount Agung last time

0:22:01 > 0:22:10round. That was in 1963. In a country with a history of volcanic

0:22:10 > 0:22:15eruptions, this was one of the worst.Ash and lava leave 100,000

0:22:15 > 0:22:21acres forever unproductive.More than 1000 died. The orange glow

0:22:21 > 0:22:25today, magma visible at the top of the volcano, a sign that a

0:22:25 > 0:22:31full-scale eruption could come soon. As the magma move up through the

0:22:31 > 0:22:36volcano, it has heated water inside, creating steam and pressure.

0:22:36 > 0:22:40Breaking of fragments of rock and hurling it thousands of metres into

0:22:40 > 0:22:52the air. For weeks, some have been living in temporary accommodation,

0:22:52 > 0:22:55ever since tiny earthquakes caused by the volcano were detected. But

0:22:55 > 0:22:57others in the villages surrounding Mount Agung have no choice but to

0:22:57 > 0:23:00stay put. TRANSLATION:I'm scared but I don't

0:23:00 > 0:23:06have the money to leave.This morning, disruption as the island's

0:23:06 > 0:23:12airport closed. Thousands of holidays and journeys affected. We

0:23:12 > 0:23:16have no information because the gates to check-in have been closed

0:23:16 > 0:23:22indefinitely.Some tourists, though, staying put to take it all in. This

0:23:22 > 0:23:27could be a relatively minor eruption over a long period of time, or

0:23:27 > 0:23:31something more serious. Even for experts, predicting what I volcano

0:23:31 > 0:23:36will do next is an impossible task.

0:23:36 > 0:23:39Six British men who've been in prison in India for more

0:23:39 > 0:23:41than four years have been freed by an appeals court.

0:23:41 > 0:23:44They were jailed on weapons charges while working on ships

0:23:44 > 0:23:45in the Indian Ocean.

0:23:45 > 0:23:47They said they were security guards, employed to combat piracy.

0:23:47 > 0:23:50Our correspondent Sanjoy Majumder sent this report from Chennai -

0:23:50 > 0:23:52it begins with the moment relatives heard the news during

0:23:52 > 0:23:56an interview with the BBC.

0:23:56 > 0:24:0235 released.Oh, my God.A short text message with the news they'd

0:24:02 > 0:24:15been waiting to hear for four years. Billy Irving and Joanne Tomlinson's

0:24:15 > 0:24:17brother, John Armstrong, among six former British shoulders acquitted

0:24:17 > 0:24:22of smuggling arms into India. It is an emotional moment for the families

0:24:22 > 0:24:27of the six men. They had campaigned long and hard to bring them home,

0:24:27 > 0:24:30and when nervous in the hours leading up to the verdict. We've

0:24:30 > 0:24:36been waiting for four years, so we had got used to the waiting, but

0:24:36 > 0:24:40that doesn't mean it gets any easier, especially at times like

0:24:40 > 0:24:45this when the judge has written his verdict. He knows what he's going to

0:24:45 > 0:24:52say.The men were on board this ship, the American owned MV Seaman

0:24:52 > 0:24:57Guard Ohio, when it entered the southern Indian coast in 2013. They

0:24:57 > 0:25:02were accused of illegally possessing arms, a charge they denied, saying

0:25:02 > 0:25:07they were legally carrying weapons as part of antipyretic operations.

0:25:07 > 0:25:12In January last year, to their horror, they were convicted and

0:25:12 > 0:25:17sentenced to five years in prison. This is where they spent their time,

0:25:17 > 0:25:23behind the high walls of a prison outside the city of Chen I.

0:25:23 > 0:25:28Conditions have been grim. They have slept on the floor and have lost

0:25:28 > 0:25:32considerable weight, with minimal contact with their families. Once

0:25:32 > 0:25:37the judge's order is communicated to the prison authorities, the six

0:25:37 > 0:25:42former British soldiers will walk free, emerging from the gates behind

0:25:42 > 0:25:46me of the Chen I Central prison where they have been kept for the

0:25:46 > 0:25:53better part of four years. They have spent anxious weeks awaiting their

0:25:53 > 0:25:59fate. Finally they can go home. Years of frustration and desperation

0:25:59 > 0:26:03have finally given way to dry, as news of their release is shared

0:26:03 > 0:26:07swiftly with friends and family. Gratitude to those who have given

0:26:07 > 0:26:17their support.

0:26:17 > 0:26:24Councils in England generated £500 million in profit from parking fees

0:26:24 > 0:26:28this year. Figures obtained from the RAC Foundation showed four of the

0:26:28 > 0:26:33five councils with the largest surplus were in London.

0:26:33 > 0:26:36England captain Joe Root says they have to bounce back quickly -

0:26:36 > 0:26:39after losing the first Ashes Test by ten wickets in Brisbane.

0:26:39 > 0:26:41So despite some promising moments along the way for England,

0:26:41 > 0:26:44Australia needed just an hour to wrap up the win to go one up

0:26:44 > 0:26:46in the five match series.

0:26:46 > 0:26:50Our sports news correspondent, Andy Swiss reports from Brisbane.

0:26:50 > 0:26:51Head to head on the pitch.

0:26:51 > 0:26:53And, it seems, off it.

0:26:53 > 0:26:55Australia cruised to victory.

0:26:55 > 0:26:58The focus was on Jonny Bairstow behind the stumps.

0:26:58 > 0:27:01And Cameron Bancroft in front.

0:27:01 > 0:27:05What did happen between them in a bar in Perth for weeks ago?

0:27:05 > 0:27:13Well, after hitting the winning runs, Bancroft

0:27:13 > 0:27:14revealed Bairstow's rather bizarre greeting.

0:27:14 > 0:27:17I got into a very amicable conversation with Jonny and, yeah,

0:27:17 > 0:27:23he just greeted me with a head-butt, kind of thing.

0:27:23 > 0:27:26I was expecting a handshake.

0:27:26 > 0:27:34It wasn't the greeting of choice that I was expecting.

0:27:34 > 0:27:37As for Bairstow himself, he insisted the incident had been

0:27:37 > 0:27:38blown out of all proportion.

0:27:38 > 0:27:43Cameron and I enjoyed the evening and continued to do so.

0:27:43 > 0:27:50There was no intent nor malice about anything during the evening.

0:27:50 > 0:27:52As you can see, out there today, there is no animosity

0:27:52 > 0:27:55between myself and Cameron, or any of the other

0:27:55 > 0:27:56Australian players.

0:27:56 > 0:27:58England say there will be no disciplinary action

0:27:58 > 0:28:04against Jonny Bairstow but after losing this match it's

0:28:04 > 0:28:08a distraction that they hardly need, and one that raises more questions

0:28:08 > 0:28:11about players' behaviour.

0:28:11 > 0:28:13After the incident involving Ben Stokes in Bristol and now this,

0:28:13 > 0:28:16the ECB say they'll be reminding the squad of their responsibilities

0:28:16 > 0:28:20and one former England captain says the players should be more careful.

0:28:20 > 0:28:25To arrive in Australia, you've got to get over jet lag

0:28:25 > 0:28:28and many teams go out for a drink, and Jonny Bairstow and his

0:28:28 > 0:28:29team-mates had on that night.

0:28:29 > 0:28:31But with what's gone on back home in Bristol,

0:28:31 > 0:28:34and everything that is surrounding this team at the minute,

0:28:34 > 0:28:37the lads have got to be a little bit smarter.

0:28:37 > 0:28:41And, so, England's Ashes have begun in defeat and controversy.

0:28:41 > 0:28:44What was an already tough challenge is now a whole lot tougher.

0:28:44 > 0:28:50Andy Swiss, BBC News, Brisbane.

0:28:50 > 0:28:52Back now to our main story.

0:28:52 > 0:28:54Prince Harry and his girlfriend, the American actress, Meghan Markle,

0:28:54 > 0:28:55have announced their engagement.

0:28:55 > 0:29:02Jane Hill is at Kensington Palace.

0:29:02 > 0:29:09It's on.It certainly is. Thank you very much and welcome back to a

0:29:09 > 0:29:13blustery Kensington Palace. This has been speculated about for some time

0:29:13 > 0:29:19now. Let's speak to the Royal editor of the Sunday Express. Not least by

0:29:19 > 0:29:29your own publication. It's going to be a busy spring next year.It is.

0:29:29 > 0:29:34The Cambridges' third baby is due in April. The statement has gone out

0:29:34 > 0:29:39that they are going to have a spring wedding, so the question is exactly

0:29:39 > 0:29:45when, before baby or after? Putting my maternal hat on, I would suggest

0:29:45 > 0:29:49that perhaps it's best to have it before Kate gives birth, because I

0:29:49 > 0:29:54think you would rather be pregnant and shepherding young royal

0:29:54 > 0:29:57children, because we would expect Prince George and Princess Charlotte

0:29:57 > 0:30:06to have a starring role in the day, rather than perhaps having a newborn

0:30:06 > 0:30:11in tow as well.Easy times ahead. Thank you very much. It is a busy

0:30:11 > 0:30:15afternoon here at Kensington Palace. People like Camilla are having to

0:30:15 > 0:30:19run inside the palace because we are waiting for the first official

0:30:19 > 0:30:23photocall later this afternoon. We are told there will be formal photos

0:30:23 > 0:30:29later this afternoon with the happy couple. Prince Harry is to marry his

0:30:29 > 0:30:33American girlfriend, Meghan Markle, and the wedding will be next spring.

0:30:33 > 0:30:39Simon, back to you.Let's have a look at the weather. Chris Fawkes

0:30:39 > 0:30:45has that.

0:30:45 > 0:30:46look at the weather. Chris Fawkes has that.

0:30:46 > 0:30:50There is in improving weather picture for many of us. The early

0:30:50 > 0:30:54morning rain has been clearing away from southern England and has been

0:30:54 > 0:30:59replaced by something a bit dry and brighter. The Peak District looking

0:30:59 > 0:31:03beautiful there, with snow covering the tops of high ground. The

0:31:03 > 0:31:08satellite picture tells the story nicely today. A lot of cloud around,

0:31:08 > 0:31:15but breaks moving the way into northern and western areas. Some

0:31:15 > 0:31:19gusts for a time this afternoon across eastern areas, touching gale

0:31:19 > 0:31:26force across the likes of Aberdeenshire. There will be some

0:31:26 > 0:31:30showers for Northern Ireland, the north-west parts of England and the

0:31:30 > 0:31:34north-west parts of Wales. Some sneaking into the Midlands as well.

0:31:34 > 0:31:39Cloud around, but some bright spells. It will feel fairly chilly

0:31:39 > 0:31:44today for many areas, though temperatures could reach double

0:31:44 > 0:31:50figures for some. Overnight tonight, showers continue to feed in across

0:31:50 > 0:31:53north-western areas with a bit of snow across the hills of Scotland.

0:31:53 > 0:31:58It will be cold here, with some icy stretches. Winds will keep

0:31:58 > 0:32:03temperatures a couple of degrees above freezing, but actually start

0:32:03 > 0:32:07to Tuesday. The weather will stakeholder over the next few days,

0:32:07 > 0:32:12because of this block of high-pressure stretching from the

0:32:12 > 0:32:16mid-Atlantic into Greenland. That prevents mild air from reaching our

0:32:16 > 0:32:23shores, and instead we are getting the cold winds from the Arctic. If

0:32:23 > 0:32:30anything, temperatures will be going down over the next few days. A cold

0:32:30 > 0:32:35start to Tuesday, but most of us will see some sunshine. Plenty of

0:32:35 > 0:32:40showers across north-western areas. With a change in the wind direction,

0:32:40 > 0:32:45more northerly, showers will come in from the North Sea to affect eastern

0:32:45 > 0:32:52areas of Scotland and England. Five to 7 degrees your top temperature on

0:32:52 > 0:32:57Tuesday, and colder still on Wednesday. Some of those showers

0:32:57 > 0:33:01will get lower down, potentially getting too quite low levels in

0:33:01 > 0:33:07northern and eastern areas. These temperatures are all low for the

0:33:07 > 0:33:11time of year, and it might be, for the next couple of weeks, the

0:33:11 > 0:33:14weather tends to be colder than normal. That's pretty
