:00:13. > :00:19.Four people found dead at a home in County Durham. Three of the victims

:00:19. > :00:23.were women, there was a shotgun next to a man's body. I would like

:00:24. > :00:28.to reassure our communities that the police are in control of this

:00:28. > :00:33.incident. At this moment, we are looking for no-one else in relation

:00:33. > :00:36.to this inquiry. The breast implant scare - a

:00:36. > :00:42.medical expert says thousands of women may need surgery to remove

:00:42. > :00:45.them. The man accused of murdering an

:00:45. > :00:49.Indian student calls himself "Psycho Stapleton" in court.

:00:49. > :00:59.A New Year pledge from David Cameron - he will do what it takes

:00:59. > :01:10.

:01:10. > :01:13.Good evening. The former mining village of Horden is in shock today

:01:14. > :01:18.after police found four bodies at a home late last night. The victims

:01:18. > :01:22.who were all related were three women and a man who was licensed to

:01:22. > :01:25.own six firearms. It is thought one of the weapons was found next to

:01:25. > :01:32.his body. Three other people managed to escape the shooting

:01:32. > :01:38.including a 19-year-old who jumped from an upstairs window.

:01:38. > :01:43.This small village in County Durham had celebrated the New Year and

:01:43. > :01:47.hours later it found itself at the centre of an investigation into

:01:47. > :01:52.four deaths. A number of emergency calls were made, all reporting

:01:52. > :01:55.sounds of gunshots at the house in Greenside Avenue in Horden.

:01:55. > :02:00.Officers arrived just before midnight and found the bodies of

:02:00. > :02:04.three women and a man who was in his 40s, next to him was a shotgun.

:02:04. > :02:08.All four were related. At this stage, we are not looking for

:02:08. > :02:12.anyone else. It is very early in the investigation. My priority is

:02:12. > :02:16.to identify the individuals in the house and I am working closely with

:02:16. > :02:21.friends and family to establish that. I need to know what's gone on

:02:21. > :02:26.inside that house and that will take the rest of today and tomorrow

:02:26. > :02:32.to complete all the inquiries. It's believed other people were in

:02:32. > :02:36.the house and one 19-year-old woman escaped from an upstairs window.

:02:36. > :02:39.Although the police are reassuring locals they aren't looking for

:02:39. > :02:46.anyone else, there is still a sense of fear and the close-knit

:02:46. > :02:50.community is shocked. It never happens here, does it? Four deaths?

:02:50. > :02:54.You can't believe it. I'm shocked that it's happened on our doorstep.

:02:54. > :03:01.It is a family matter, what we have been told over the news. I don't

:03:02. > :03:06.suppose it is any threat to us. It is a big shock. I am scared.

:03:06. > :03:12.was at work all the time, but she seemed to be all right. I used to

:03:12. > :03:16.talk to her. I didn't know of any trouble. One of the women has been

:03:16. > :03:21.named locally as Susan McGoldrick and the man is believed to be

:03:21. > :03:26.Michael Atherton, a taxi driver who held six firearms licences. Three

:03:26. > :03:30.for shotguns and three for the more strictly-controlled Section 1

:03:30. > :03:36.firearms. At this stage, officers don't know if any of the legally-

:03:36. > :03:43.held weapons were used in last night's shooting.

:03:43. > :03:46.Fiona Trott is in Horden for us tonight. What are the details that

:03:46. > :03:50.have been emerging through the day? The most important thing that I

:03:50. > :03:54.think that has come to light today is the fact we have learned the

:03:54. > :03:59.history of one of the residents that lived in that house. He has

:03:59. > :04:04.been named as Michael Atherton. We know that one of those residents

:04:04. > :04:08.had a firearms licence for three shotguns and three other types of

:04:08. > :04:12.firearms. People here in Horden this evening are saying that they

:04:12. > :04:16.have heard that the shootings took place and then the person that

:04:17. > :04:20.fired the gun turned the gun on themselves. Now that has not been

:04:20. > :04:25.confirmed by the police. But if that is the case, what police have

:04:25. > :04:31.to do this evening is scrutinise what checks were taking place

:04:31. > :04:36.before to look at this man's history and what firearms were

:04:36. > :04:39.inside that house. Thank you. A senior plastic surgeon who is

:04:39. > :04:43.advising the Government on the safety of breast implants has said

:04:43. > :04:48.thousands of women may need surgery to remove them. Tim Goodacre say it

:04:48. > :04:54.is failure rate of implants made by the French company PIP was

:04:54. > :04:57.unacceptable. The saga over faulty breast

:04:57. > :05:00.implants has meant an anxious festive season for thousands of

:05:00. > :05:06.British women. The New Year is bringing more uncertainty with

:05:06. > :05:12.claims from one UK clinic that 7% of implants made by the French

:05:12. > :05:17.company PIP have ruptured. But seven times higher than the figure

:05:17. > :05:22.acknowledged by the Government. One of the surgeons investigating the

:05:22. > :05:25.scandal says all of them should be removed as a precaution. I would be

:05:25. > :05:30.suggesting to the Department of Health that that rupture rate is

:05:30. > :05:37.unacceptable and a programme should be put into place to remove these

:05:37. > :05:41.devices. That is an open-and-shut case, if that is the data. It is an

:05:41. > :05:45.opinion which has the backing of many of those who had the PIP

:05:45. > :05:48.implants. This woman certainly doesn't want to take any chances.

:05:48. > :05:56.I'm incredibly concerned about the impact these implants could be

:05:56. > :05:59.having on my health. I haven't stopped worrying about it. I want

:05:59. > :06:03.them replaced. PIP, which was closed down last year, was using

:06:03. > :06:06.non-medical silicone in the implants. The French government has

:06:06. > :06:10.already recommended they are removed from women who have them

:06:10. > :06:13.and has said it will pay for the necessary operations. Here, the

:06:13. > :06:17.Department of Health believes there isn't any danger unless the

:06:17. > :06:22.implants rupture. It has set up a review panel to examine the safety

:06:23. > :06:26.data. That panel is due to report later this week. Women with the

:06:26. > :06:30.sub-standard implants will be waiting anxiously to hear its

:06:30. > :06:34.findings. A man has appeared before

:06:34. > :06:39.magistrates in Manchester charged with murdering Anuj Bidve. Mr Bidve

:06:39. > :06:43.was shot in the head in Salford in the early hours of Boxing Day.

:06:43. > :06:48.Kiaran Stapleton, who is 20, was remanded in custody. He told the

:06:48. > :06:52.court his name was "Psycho Stapleton". Tonight, one week on

:06:52. > :06:56.from the shooting, a vigil is about to take place in Salford close to

:06:56. > :07:03.where it happened. Nick Ravenscroft is there for us now. There's been

:07:03. > :07:08.quite a reaction to this murder locally? George, because people who

:07:08. > :07:13.live around here didn't know Anuj Bidve, then they don't feel his

:07:13. > :07:16.loss personally. Yet, the fact that a stranger who was merely passing

:07:16. > :07:21.through this community could be shot dead has shocked many people

:07:21. > :07:25.deeply. In fact, some people fear that the crime may have cast a

:07:25. > :07:29.taint over the entire community and so tonight's vigil here, which is

:07:29. > :07:33.due to take place shortly after 6.00, is their way not only of

:07:33. > :07:37.paying their respects but also of distancing themselves from that

:07:37. > :07:40.crime. Earlier today, a man appeared in court, a local man,

:07:40. > :07:49.accused of the crime. He wasn't required to enter a plea of guilty

:07:49. > :07:55.or not guilty, merely to confirm his name to which he replied,

:07:55. > :08:01.""Psycho Stapleton"." In India, officers from Greater

:08:02. > :08:06.Manchester Police have met Mr Bidve's parents. They have

:08:06. > :08:09.criticised the British and Indian authorities for their handling of

:08:09. > :08:15.the case. Andrew North met the family at their home in the city of

:08:15. > :08:20.Pune. His report contains some flash photography.

:08:20. > :08:25.Remembering an only son. The parents of Anuj Bidve and his

:08:25. > :08:33.grandmother still can't believe he is dead. A brilliant student, and a

:08:33. > :08:43.Manchester United fan, his father tells me. And my best friend.

:08:43. > :08:44.

:08:44. > :08:48.is a big gap in my life. I cannot say more than this. They first

:08:48. > :08:52.learnt he was dead from Facebook and asked why it took Greater

:08:53. > :09:02.Manchester Police so long to call when they had his mobile or

:09:02. > :09:08.cellphone. I am really very unhappy about this. Anuj was having his

:09:08. > :09:13.cell along with him and in that cell my number, my family's numbers,

:09:13. > :09:18.his mother's numbers were there. It could have been possible for the

:09:18. > :09:24.police as well as the hospital authorities to contact us.

:09:24. > :09:27.Criticisms the police had to answer themselves when they arrived.

:09:27. > :09:33.Greater Manchester Police are at the family home offering their

:09:33. > :09:39.condolences and trying to clear the air. Their presence has attracted a

:09:39. > :09:44.large crowd. After two hours inside, officers left without comment. On

:09:44. > :09:52.their way back to Britain. The country the Bidve family chose for

:09:52. > :09:55.Anuj because there they thought he would be safe.

:09:55. > :09:59.Here, the Prime Minister has said 2012 will be a difficult year for

:09:59. > :10:03.millions worried about their jobs or struggling to pay the bills. But

:10:03. > :10:07.in his New Year's message, David Cameron says the coalition is

:10:07. > :10:10.determined to get Britain back up to strength. He also said the

:10:10. > :10:17.Olympic Games and the Queen's Diamond Jubilee would provide

:10:17. > :10:21.opportunities to showcase the country's traditions and talents.

:10:21. > :10:25.The message from Downing Street this time last year was 2011 would

:10:26. > :10:30.see Britain get back on its feet. In 2012, the Prime Minister accepts

:10:30. > :10:34.that some are still struggling. search for work has become

:10:34. > :10:39.difficult, particularly for young people. And rising prices have hit

:10:39. > :10:43.household budgets. I get that. We are taking action on both fronts. I

:10:43. > :10:48.know how difficult it will be to get through this. But I also know

:10:49. > :10:53.that we will. And it is the state of the economy that may dictate the

:10:53. > :11:00.Prime Minister's own fortunes in 2012. His colleagues in Europe have

:11:00. > :11:04.warned of a difficult year ahead. Little surprise then that they are

:11:04. > :11:08.cautious here, David Cameron says his Government's economic plans

:11:08. > :11:14.have given some protection from the worst of those euro debt storms. We

:11:14. > :11:17.have security, he says, for now. Reasons to be cheerful? Well, the

:11:17. > :11:23.Olympic Games and the Diamond Jubilee are both in the diary.

:11:23. > :11:31.we welcome the world to the best Olympics ever, and as? The 60th

:11:31. > :11:36.year of -- and as in the 60th year of her reign we honour the Queen,

:11:36. > :11:40.let us use these things as a mirror of ourselves, too, a mirror of the

:11:40. > :11:44.nation. While the Prime Minister is promising his policies will tackle

:11:44. > :11:49.excess in the city, Labour are demanding big changes to existing

:11:49. > :11:55.plans. Instead of giving tax cuts to the banks, we would use the

:11:55. > :11:59.proceeds of those monies to reduce tuition fees, we have said we would

:11:59. > :12:04.use a repeat of a bank bonus tax to put in place a Youth Jobs Fund to

:12:04. > :12:08.give many of the one million young people who are now out of work more

:12:08. > :12:14.opportunities. No-one's under any illusions about the challenges of

:12:14. > :12:17.2012. The debate will centre on how best to confront them.

:12:17. > :12:22.Passenger groups have condemned new increases in rail fares. They go up

:12:22. > :12:26.by an average of 5.9% today in England, Scotland and Wales. But

:12:26. > :12:32.some commuters will find their season tickets increase by almost

:12:32. > :12:35.11%. Rail passengers buying tickets

:12:35. > :12:39.today will have noticed the difference. Others may only realise

:12:39. > :12:44.how much extra they will pay when they return to work after the

:12:44. > :12:54.Christmas break. The average rise for train travel is 5.9%, but some

:12:54. > :13:05.

:13:05. > :13:10.I think they are too expensive. You go abroad and you can travel by

:13:10. > :13:17.rail much more cheaply. When it is not rush hour, it is fine. But when

:13:17. > :13:23.you are paying for rush hour trains and you have to stand, no. Rising

:13:23. > :13:30.rail fares will make extra demands on stretched household budgets.

:13:30. > :13:36.Ticket prices are likely to go up further in future years. It is very

:13:37. > :13:40.difficult to see how passengers can bear more of these fare rises.

:13:40. > :13:44.Passenger numbers are going up so there is more and more coming into

:13:44. > :13:47.the industry the whole time. That is what should be funding the

:13:47. > :13:50.investment. Rail companies say investment is needed to fund better

:13:50. > :13:55.services, improve stations, more trains and they argue the rising

:13:55. > :13:59.costs are a result of a shift in how all that is paid for. Every

:14:00. > :14:03.January, the public is being asked a question, who should pay for

:14:03. > :14:08.running our railways - the taxpayer or the passenger? The answer that

:14:08. > :14:12.the Government have given to that question is the taxpayer should

:14:12. > :14:15.subsidise the cost less and the passenger should pay more. Whatever

:14:15. > :14:19.the arguments on both sides, travellers dependent on the rail

:14:19. > :14:23.network to get to and from work will have no choice but to pay the

:14:23. > :14:27.extra. Football: With the top three having

:14:27. > :14:37.a day off, there are five games in the Premier League to tell you

:14:37. > :15:01.

:15:01. > :15:06.Celtic remain top of the Scottish Premier League after beating

:15:06. > :15:13.Dunfermline 3-0. Charlie Mulgrew ensured an easy win with a well-
