:00:08. > :00:14.A warning of exceptional weather to come as bad, possibly worse than we

:00:15. > :00:17.have had already. Tidal surges and high winds threaten many coastal

:00:18. > :00:25.areas. Severe flood warnings have been issued with a risk of danger to

:00:26. > :00:30.life. These floods at the coast will be dangerous. If the warnings from

:00:31. > :00:36.the local authority and emergency services are to take heed and take

:00:37. > :00:41.action. We will bring you the latest from the BBC weather Centre. Also,

:00:42. > :00:46.another increasing the cost of rail travel. Campaigners say that prices

:00:47. > :00:49.are three times faster than wages. Nigella Lawson gives her first

:00:50. > :00:54.interview since revelations in court about drug-taking. Two have not only

:00:55. > :00:59.your private life, but distortions of your private life put on display

:01:00. > :01:05.is mortifying. Energy bills will be simpler from today with clearer

:01:06. > :01:12.tariffs and discounts. Thanks, everyone! And a dramatic rescue for

:01:13. > :01:18.passengers on a ship trapped in thick ice on the Antarctic since

:01:19. > :01:21.Christmas Eve. In sport, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is the new manager

:01:22. > :01:23.of Cardiff city. The former Manchester United striker

:01:24. > :01:43.has signed a 12 month rolling contract.

:01:44. > :01:48.Good evening, welcome to the BBC News at Six. If you thought the

:01:49. > :01:52.weather was bad over the Christmas break, there is more and possibly

:01:53. > :01:55.worse to come. The government is warning we are in for a period of

:01:56. > :01:58.exceptional weather over the next few days, with a combination of

:01:59. > :02:03.rain, wind and high tides. The Environment Agency has issued 13

:02:04. > :02:07.severe flood warnings, the highest category indicating a danger to

:02:08. > :02:10.life, for southwestern and tomorrow morning. There are also warnings of

:02:11. > :02:16.tidal flooding in numerous locations. Jon Kay is in Newquay in

:02:17. > :02:19.Cornwall. Standing here this evening, you get

:02:20. > :02:24.a sense of the storm coming in. The wind is certainly picking up. The

:02:25. > :02:28.waves are getting higher. This area of North Cornwall is one of those

:02:29. > :02:34.areas, the severe weather warning areas. But it goes right around the

:02:35. > :02:37.peninsular of south-west England. They are the most serious warnings

:02:38. > :02:42.that the Environment Agency can issue. It means there is a potential

:02:43. > :02:47.risk to life. So, here it comes again. It might be

:02:48. > :02:53.new year, but it is the same old weather heading our way. In Cornwall

:02:54. > :02:58.today, a reminder of how treacherous the tide can be. A body was found

:02:59. > :03:03.after a man was swept into the sea while celebrating the start of 2014.

:03:04. > :03:08.The group of people that got into trouble yesterday, it was reported

:03:09. > :03:11.they were only in up to their knees. But there were big waves, a

:03:12. > :03:16.strong swell, people underestimate the danger. They think they are not

:03:17. > :03:20.actually swimming and they are all right. But it only takes one wave to

:03:21. > :03:23.knock you off your feet and you have very little chance of rescuing

:03:24. > :03:27.yourself. The Christmas storms left tens of thousands of people without

:03:28. > :03:31.power and led to criticism of the emergency response. Mindful of that,

:03:32. > :03:35.the Government's emergency committee met in Whitehall today to discuss

:03:36. > :03:40.more exceptional weather on the way. We will be working very closely

:03:41. > :03:45.with local councils, power companies, utilities and transport

:03:46. > :03:48.companies, making sure that all of those organisations are absolutely

:03:49. > :03:54.prepared for the bad weather that is coming. It has been a relatively dry

:03:55. > :03:58.day in the south-west of England, but coastal communities are

:03:59. > :04:01.preparing for the worst. It is unusual to have as many severe

:04:02. > :04:06.warnings as there are in place tonight. The highest category that

:04:07. > :04:10.can be issued. The Environment Agency is describing a potentially

:04:11. > :04:16.deadly, nation of high tides, large waves and strong wind. We have a bit

:04:17. > :04:19.of a weather window today, but unfortunately tomorrow we are

:04:20. > :04:23.expecting some horrible conditions. There is a storm moving in off the

:04:24. > :04:26.Atlantic that will generate some very high wind. Unfortunately, they

:04:27. > :04:31.are going to combine with high spring tides that are going to

:04:32. > :04:34.generate unpleasant conditions. The Environment Agency is warning of

:04:35. > :04:38.more flooding in numerous locations. Not just tonight, but into tomorrow

:04:39. > :04:42.and the weekend. Here in Carmarthenshire, a taste of what is

:04:43. > :04:46.expected in South and West Wales and parts of Scotland. And there is a

:04:47. > :04:53.tidal surge predicted in Northern Ireland on Friday lunchtime. In the

:04:54. > :04:57.Cornish harbour town of Foy, they are used to high tides and flooding.

:04:58. > :05:01.While they are taking the forecast is seriously, some wonder if the

:05:02. > :05:06.authorities might be overreacting. I think there is a danger that the

:05:07. > :05:11.message is made into... Is overblown, and it becomes

:05:12. > :05:14.scaremongering. But I guess the government have got to do something

:05:15. > :05:19.about it. Maybe they need to start looking at the infrastructure more

:05:20. > :05:23.carefully? This afternoon, there was little sense of the storm to come.

:05:24. > :05:31.But the government insists that the risks are very real and warns that

:05:32. > :05:34.Britain must be ready. The government, local councils and

:05:35. > :05:38.various agencies are all stressing tonight that they are prepared and

:05:39. > :05:42.everything is in place to deal with this storm. I have just heard from

:05:43. > :05:44.Cornwall Council. They say they are opening an emergency response unit

:05:45. > :05:49.at midnight that will work right through. ABC News teams across the

:05:50. > :05:54.UK will be covering it on regional television, local radio. There is

:05:55. > :05:59.more information on the BBC News website.

:06:00. > :06:03.Travelling by train has become more expensive today at annual rail fare

:06:04. > :06:09.increases come into force across much of Britain. All fares are up by

:06:10. > :06:14.2.8% on average. Campaigners say that prices are rising three times

:06:15. > :06:19.faster than wages. Regulated fares, including season tickets, are up

:06:20. > :06:22.3.1% on average. It means for many commuters that the price of

:06:23. > :06:26.travelling to work could surpass ?5,000 a year. Many passengers and

:06:27. > :06:28.consumer groups have criticised the price hikes, in spite of them being

:06:29. > :06:33.the smallest increase for four years.

:06:34. > :06:38.It has been as regular as clockwork. For the past decade, it is something

:06:39. > :06:43.that busy commuters can always rely on as they rush back after

:06:44. > :06:47.Christmas, the January fare rise. Ticket prices were actually meant to

:06:48. > :06:52.go up by more until the Government cap the increase last month. I am

:06:53. > :06:56.sure these passengers would welcome any respite in the price of the

:06:57. > :07:03.ticket. But this comes after a decade worth of above inflation fare

:07:04. > :07:06.rises. Will it be enough? It is an improvement on previous years, but I

:07:07. > :07:12.still think it is a lot. Commuters get hit hard all the time. ?5,800

:07:13. > :07:16.now, it is going to be considerably more. It is going to be a struggle.

:07:17. > :07:24.I travel every day from East Croydon. Conditions are horrendous.

:07:25. > :07:27.Always delayed. Not happy. It is actually the Government that sets

:07:28. > :07:31.the increase for around half of the tickets we die. Known as regulated

:07:32. > :07:36.fares, they include season tickets. This year they will go up in line

:07:37. > :07:39.with inflation, though companies can add a little more as long as they

:07:40. > :07:44.match it with a smaller rise elsewhere. They work coming into

:07:45. > :07:51.London from Canterbury -- a worker coming into London from Canterbury

:07:52. > :07:54.will only see a rise of ?100 more per year. The Middlesbrough to

:07:55. > :08:00.Newcastle commute goes up by 5%, ?128 per year. Successive

:08:01. > :08:02.governments keep hiking fares because they want passengers to pay

:08:03. > :08:07.a bigger share of the railway running costs. The money also goes

:08:08. > :08:12.towards building new stations and electrifying lines to make them more

:08:13. > :08:15.reliable. The Government is investing ?16 billion over the next

:08:16. > :08:19.five years to upgrade the network in terms of maintenance, new lines and

:08:20. > :08:24.rolling stock. That is key. There is some movement in the basis of the

:08:25. > :08:29.balance between the fair pay and the taxpayer. The cost of some season

:08:30. > :08:34.tickets has almost doubled after ten years of relentless rice rises.

:08:35. > :08:40.Slough to London has gone from ?1600 to well over ?3000. Canterbury to

:08:41. > :08:46.London has risen from ?2700 to nearly ?5,000. So, how do train

:08:47. > :08:52.companies justify the price of a fare? The average season ticket

:08:53. > :08:55.holder travels 16,000 miles over the course of the year. If you were

:08:56. > :08:59.attempting to drive 16,000 miles in one year and added up the cost that

:09:00. > :09:04.you would incur, you would probably spend at least double, probably

:09:05. > :09:08.ttreble the cost of a season ticket. In Scotland, the commuters will face

:09:09. > :09:13.the same rise as in England. At season-ticket holders in Wales will

:09:14. > :09:15.pay a little less than inflation. There was no increase planned in

:09:16. > :09:22.Northern Ireland. Despite these price rises, record numbers of

:09:23. > :09:25.people are using the railways. I suspect the question a lot of people

:09:26. > :09:33.preparing to go home tonight here will be asking, is there any chance

:09:34. > :09:36.of a price cut any time soon? I can't see that happening for a few

:09:37. > :09:41.years. The government back row pays for about 30% of the railways at the

:09:42. > :09:43.moment, and they want to cut that down to 25%. That inevitably means

:09:44. > :09:50.more money has to come from passengers.

:09:51. > :09:53.Nigella Lawson has said it was mortifying to have details of her

:09:54. > :09:56.personal life and drug-taking revealed in court last month.

:09:57. > :09:59.Speaking in her first television interview since her two former

:10:00. > :10:03.assistants were cleared of defrauding hair and her ex-husband,

:10:04. > :10:06.Charles Saatchi, out of hundreds of thousands of pounds, she told a US

:10:07. > :10:12.TV station that there only desire during the case was to protect her

:10:13. > :10:16.children. The Taste returns tonight with a

:10:17. > :10:20.twist... Good Morning America and what would normally have been a

:10:21. > :10:24.bright and breezy bit of showbiz, a plug for a cookery programme, The

:10:25. > :10:28.Taste. At one of the stars is Nigella Lawson. This is the first

:10:29. > :10:35.time she has spoken publicly since the trial of her two assistants. Two

:10:36. > :10:39.have not only your private life, but distortions of your private life put

:10:40. > :10:44.on display is mortifying. But there are people going through an awful

:10:45. > :10:51.lot worse. To dwell on any of it would be self pity. I do that.

:10:52. > :10:56.Nigella! Nigella! In the court appearance, she had been accused of

:10:57. > :10:58.being a regular user of cocaine, which she denies. The intense

:10:59. > :11:05.interest in her life had begun before her trial, -- the trial, when

:11:06. > :11:08.these photographs of her and her now former husband appeared. Over the

:11:09. > :11:13.months, her private life has become very public. That appearance in

:11:14. > :11:16.court was bruising. She said her reputation had been maliciously

:11:17. > :11:24.vilified. Today, she appeared more reflective than angry. Still,

:11:25. > :11:28.wounded the experience. My only desire was to protect my children as

:11:29. > :11:31.much as possible, alas, that was not always possible and I couldn't

:11:32. > :11:37.always do it, but that is what I wanted to do. Since then, I have

:11:38. > :11:42.eaten a lot of chocolate, had a very good Christmas and I am into the New

:11:43. > :11:45.Year. Time to move on and return to talking about food was the message.

:11:46. > :11:46.But her feelings about the way she has been treated in court were

:11:47. > :11:55.clear. The health of the former is rarely

:11:56. > :12:03.prior minister aerial Chevron has worsened significantly. -- aerial

:12:04. > :12:08.Chevron. He has been in a coma for eight years since suffering a

:12:09. > :12:11.stroke. Doctors say that there are problems with several vital organs

:12:12. > :12:16.and his family are at his bedside. The energy bill should be easier to

:12:17. > :12:19.understand today. Each company can now offer just four tariffs per

:12:20. > :12:28.customer for both electricity and gas.

:12:29. > :12:32.If you cannot understand your bill or compare it to what else is on

:12:33. > :12:36.offer, you could end up on a gas and electricity deal which costs too

:12:37. > :12:40.much. So, energy suppliers have been told by regulators to cut down on

:12:41. > :12:46.the Bill will bring variations which end up confusing customers into

:12:47. > :12:50.overpaying. We have had people saying that they go to switching

:12:51. > :12:53.sites or phone suppliers and get bamboozled by the complete array of

:12:54. > :12:58.tariffs that currently exist. These complex, multi-where you pay one

:12:59. > :13:03.rate until you get to a certain point and then pay a different rate,

:13:04. > :13:07.all of that is gone. Even though bills are being made simpler, each

:13:08. > :13:11.company will still be able to offer four different electricity tariffs

:13:12. > :13:16.and four different gas prices. There will be fixed or variable prices,

:13:17. > :13:20.green deals, and they will have a standing charge, which can vary, as

:13:21. > :13:24.well as the unit price, along with possible discounts for dual fuel,

:13:25. > :13:29.taking both gas and electricity from the same company, and keeping your

:13:30. > :13:32.account online. It could still get complicated. But anything simpler

:13:33. > :13:37.might help. I think if there are fewer tariffs, it will be easier to

:13:38. > :13:40.compare. Before, you have many different tariffs and it was

:13:41. > :13:45.difficult to work out worked well for your particular property. My

:13:46. > :13:48.concern is, have they levelled them off at a slightly higher rates

:13:49. > :13:54.because the Government was saying make it simpler? Bills have doubled

:13:55. > :13:58.in recent years because the price of gas out of the North Sea, and

:13:59. > :14:03.imported, has gone up, along with electricity at the power station, a

:14:04. > :14:06.problem simpler tariffs will not solve. Today, Labour accuse

:14:07. > :14:15.suppliers of overtired jink households to the June of ?40,000 a

:14:16. > :14:18.year by inflating wholesale costs. -- overcharging households.

:14:19. > :14:24.Wholesale prices are linked to what is happening internationally. What

:14:25. > :14:27.individuals and households want is that they do not want prices to go

:14:28. > :14:32.up. Of course that is understandable. The regulator says

:14:33. > :14:37.making it easier to spot a cheaper deal will boost competition and keep

:14:38. > :14:40.prices as low as possible. Soon, suppliers will be forced to tell

:14:41. > :14:45.customers if they would do better on a different tariffs.

:14:46. > :14:55.Our top story: 13 severe flood warnings for south-west England as

:14:56. > :15:00.storms and high tides are set to batter the coast. Still to come: In

:15:01. > :15:06.training and hoping to be picked for Team GB, the Iraq war veteran turned

:15:07. > :15:10.Paralympic skier. Coming up on Sportsday, trying to avoid a

:15:11. > :15:14.whitewash. England's cricketers will start the final Ashes test in Sydney

:15:15. > :15:26.with a possible three debutants in the side.

:15:27. > :15:31.House Fraser has reported its best ever Christmas after a last-minute

:15:32. > :15:35.rush to stores and a record increase in online shopping. -- House of

:15:36. > :15:41.Fraser. John Lewis's cells also rose. Evidence has been fearing --

:15:42. > :15:46.Debenhams has an faring less well. Emma Simpson report.

:15:47. > :15:53.Just some of the products that have been flying off the shelves. It has

:15:54. > :16:01.been boosting the fortunes for House of Fraser and John Lewis. The

:16:02. > :16:05.Christmas story for retailers is starting to be unwrapped. The boss

:16:06. > :16:10.of House of Fraser has plenty to be pleased about. This tour is

:16:11. > :16:14.celebrating its best ever Christmas. We had increases in stores but on my

:16:15. > :16:18.more significant. We saw it come late as the customer was more

:16:19. > :16:25.confident about using their iPad at home. People were shopping late

:16:26. > :16:30.buying at home. That has been the change I have seen over the last few

:16:31. > :16:35.Christmases. Online sales is where the real growth is coming from. At

:16:36. > :16:39.House of Fraser, they were up 58% in the last three weeks of December

:16:40. > :16:46.compared to the previous year. At John Lewis, online sales were up by

:16:47. > :16:49.nearly a quarter. But the numbers for ordering online and picking up

:16:50. > :16:55.in-store were even bigger, with click and collect up by nearly 62%.

:16:56. > :17:00.For John Lewis, it doesn't matter these days whether the sales are

:17:01. > :17:06.online or in store. As long as it can keep up with our shopping

:17:07. > :17:12.habits, which are changing fast. The combination of a tough economy and

:17:13. > :17:18.this mega chains to customers using online in a different way has really

:17:19. > :17:24.separated the winners and losers. -- change. It is a crowded, competitive

:17:25. > :17:27.high Street. At Christmas, the trick for retailers is not just how to

:17:28. > :17:32.stand out but you try to hold their nerve and not cut prices to early. I

:17:33. > :17:37.Debenhams come they are already counting the cost of heavy

:17:38. > :17:49.discounting. -- at Ibn is, there are already counting the cost.

:17:50. > :17:56.Three big names with different Christmas stories. On the high

:17:57. > :18:03.street, the spotlight will now be on Marks Spencer 's' performance.

:18:04. > :18:07.Michael Schumacher remains critical but stable in hospital in France,

:18:08. > :18:11.where he is being treated for severe brain injuries. The motor racing

:18:12. > :18:15.champion hit his head during a skiing accident at the weekend.

:18:16. > :18:20.Let's speak to Richard Conway in Grenoble. Still no sign of

:18:21. > :18:23.improvement? Michael Schumacher remains in intensive care in

:18:24. > :18:29.Grenoble this evening. He has been here since Sunday since the accident

:18:30. > :18:33.on the outs. Yesterday we heard from his manager, who said he was stable

:18:34. > :18:38.following a second operation on Monday night to relieve pressure on

:18:39. > :18:41.his brain. Doctors today at the hospital say they would not be

:18:42. > :18:45.providing any update to that. They would only come before the cameras

:18:46. > :18:48.when they have something to say. There would be no commentary on his

:18:49. > :18:54.health. Tomorrow is his 45th birthday. He will be joined by his

:18:55. > :18:58.family. They have been a constant presence here since the accident.

:18:59. > :19:05.They will also be joined here by Ferrari fans. Ferrari is his old

:19:06. > :19:10.team, where he achieved so many successes. They announced today they

:19:11. > :19:14.want to hold a silent and dignified show of support, in their words, for

:19:15. > :19:18.Michael Schumacher. They are urging fans to come down just in red to

:19:19. > :19:22.show their support and appreciation for him. Tonight, here in Grenoble,

:19:23. > :19:26.he remains in a medically induced coma and he continues, in the words

:19:27. > :19:34.of his doctors, to fight for his life. The Prime Minister has said

:19:35. > :19:38.that life should mean life as the government considers US style

:19:39. > :19:40.hundred-year prison sentences for murderers and serious offenders.

:19:41. > :19:44.Last year the European Court of Human Rights declared whole life

:19:45. > :19:48.tariffs in England illegal, although ministers believe they can cite that

:19:49. > :19:51.the ruling by letting judges impose sentences for hundreds of years. --

:19:52. > :19:57.sidestep. Cardiff City have confirmed that Ole

:19:58. > :20:01.Gunnar Solskjaer is to be their new manager. He replaces the sacked

:20:02. > :20:04.Malky Mackay and met his new squad at the club's training ground this

:20:05. > :20:09.morning. He said it was a fantastic challenge and at the club is ready

:20:10. > :20:12.to take the next step up. I British older who was badly

:20:13. > :20:18.wounded in Iraq could be chosen for the UK's Winter Olympics team in

:20:19. > :20:23.Sochi. Mick Brennan lost both his legs nine years ago and started to

:20:24. > :20:30.ski in 2008. He has become one of Britain's test disabled skiers.

:20:31. > :20:34.Caroline Wyatt reports. Mick Brennan has been fighting his

:20:35. > :20:38.way back to health. Not just from the wounds he sustained in Iraq

:20:39. > :20:42.where he lost both legs, but the skiing injuries of the past year

:20:43. > :20:48.which culminated in a broken wrist. It is only now healing, just weeks

:20:49. > :20:53.before the team selection for the Paralympics in Sochi. I have lost a
