:00:58. > :01:04.The comedian and actor, Rick Mayle has died suddenly. Conditions at a

:01:05. > :01:10.care home in West Sussex are described as harrowing into the

:01:11. > :01:15.depths of 19 elderly residents. I will be live in Rio as England

:01:16. > :01:19.trained for the first time in Brazil ahead of their World Cup journey.

:01:20. > :01:23.The row over spikes aimed at deterring rough sleepers.

:01:24. > :01:25.And police hunt this man following a suspected homophobic attack

:01:26. > :02:08.special measures after the chief inspector reported back into claims

:02:09. > :02:12.of hardline Muslim takeovers. He said there was evidence of an

:02:13. > :02:17.organised campaign to target certain schools and change their and ethos.

:02:18. > :02:23.He pointed to fear and some schools were some teachers were forced out

:02:24. > :02:27.of their jobs. He said there had been a sudden and deep decline in

:02:28. > :02:37.school standards. The claims have been dead by one of the schools. Our

:02:38. > :02:42.correspondent is in Birmingham. I am at Parkview School, one at the

:02:43. > :02:48.centre of the allegations. It is quiet, but all day feelings have

:02:49. > :02:51.been running high. It is a community that never invited the spotlight and

:02:52. > :02:59.many feel they have been unfairly judged. But not all. Birmingham

:03:00. > :03:00.schools have ensured months of rumours about radicalisation and

:03:01. > :03:06.extremism. Today a damning verdict for five of them with Ofsted

:03:07. > :03:12.condemning a culture of fear and intimidation that was shocking. Some

:03:13. > :03:15.headteachers, including those with a proud record of raising standards

:03:16. > :03:21.have been marginalised or forced out of their jobs. This has left a

:03:22. > :03:26.vacuum in which schools previously rated good or outstanding have

:03:27. > :03:30.suffered staff turnover, a collapse in morale and a rapid decline in

:03:31. > :03:36.their overall effect illness. Ofsted said there had been a deliberate

:03:37. > :03:41.attempt to change the ethos of the schools with the curriculum being

:03:42. > :03:44.narrowed and a Muslim culture in non-faith schools. Outside one of

:03:45. > :03:58.them today, opinions were divided as to what was going on. In 2001,

:03:59. > :04:02.people started to see, 5%. People who are against the school don't

:04:03. > :04:10.want us to do well in this deprived area. They teach lessons to be nice

:04:11. > :04:15.to one another, be nice to your parents. We don't have courses on

:04:16. > :04:22.how to make bumps. They say if you sit with the good -- girls, you are

:04:23. > :04:28.likely to work better. You can sit with the girls but you cannot have a

:04:29. > :04:35.girlfriend. , nothing like that. In Islam you cannot have that. It is

:04:36. > :04:44.not an Islamic school. It does feel like one? Yes, but it feels like an

:04:45. > :04:47.Mick school. Two years ago, a school that was outstanding, 18 months

:04:48. > :04:53.later it has been classed as inadequate. There is a failing in

:04:54. > :05:00.the process of Ofsted or they have come back here with a political

:05:01. > :05:04.agenda. Earlier teachers expressed anger that their school which was

:05:05. > :05:10.outstanding two years ago, was graded inadequate. Ofsted came to

:05:11. > :05:17.our schools looking for extremism, and proof our children have religion

:05:18. > :05:21.forced upon them. The Ofsted report has found no evidence of this

:05:22. > :05:28.because it is not what is happening at our schools. At this school,

:05:29. > :05:32.Ofsted says a small group of governors have been promoting a

:05:33. > :05:37.narrow faith -based ideology with staff afraid to speak out but left

:05:38. > :05:46.one parent almost speechless with rage. Where do I start from? Last

:05:47. > :05:50.year this was outstanding. A Trojan horse documents, a baseless document

:05:51. > :05:55.has caused so much hysteria. This school has been dragged into it. But

:05:56. > :05:58.the school principal, who is on sick leave Thomas said she had been

:05:59. > :06:05.targeted by a hostile governing body. I am upset because I am the

:06:06. > :06:10.principal and I have been treated in this manner. It is disgraceful. The

:06:11. > :06:14.edgings -- Education Secretary said he would take decisive action.

:06:15. > :06:19.Schools which have failed will be taken over under new leadership to

:06:20. > :06:24.be taken into a new direction. Any school can be subject to on the spot

:06:25. > :06:31.inspections with no advanced warning. We will put the promotion

:06:32. > :06:37.of British values at the heart of what every school has to deliver for

:06:38. > :06:40.children. Schools in Birmingham have been subject to an organised attempt

:06:41. > :06:49.in some cases to entrench a form of Islam. Whether or not that amounts

:06:50. > :06:53.to is -- extremism will be debated. In Birmingham we can expect action

:06:54. > :07:00.to be taken, including a change of management and leadership in those

:07:01. > :07:05.schools in special measures. But there are two other investigations

:07:06. > :07:10.underway, including one leg by eight former counterterror chief. So how

:07:11. > :07:16.much of a threat those bands really pose are still to be answered. Nick

:07:17. > :07:21.Robinson is in the houses of Parliament. What do you make of

:07:22. > :07:26.Michael Gove's response? When he read out some of the allegations by

:07:27. > :07:30.Ofsted that girls were referred to as white prostitutes and a Saudi

:07:31. > :07:36.trip was only done for Muslim parents. You could sense shock. But

:07:37. > :07:41.Michael Gove did not come up with evidence. Ofsted have not come up

:07:42. > :07:47.with evidence or the original allegation there was a citywide plot

:07:48. > :07:52.by Muslim extremists to take over schools in Birmingham. He says there

:07:53. > :08:00.is still an enquiry going on by Peter Clark, into those allegations.

:08:01. > :08:06.But it seems unlikely they will be fully proven. He said his own

:08:07. > :08:12.department was guilty and will look at it, found the City Council guilty

:08:13. > :08:18.and Ofsted guilty as well. Now it seems not enough is being done to

:08:19. > :08:23.deal with what he calls nonviolent extremism. Labour said it is a

:08:24. > :08:26.result of government reforms that gives less control to local

:08:27. > :08:33.authorities. The government says that is not the problem but they not

:08:34. > :08:37.clear what solutions are. The actor and comedian, Rick Mayle

:08:38. > :08:44.has died at the age of 56. He starred in some of most successful

:08:45. > :08:50.series of the 1980s. Police and paramedics were called to a house in

:08:51. > :08:54.south-west London at lunchtime, but he died at the scene. Police say his

:08:55. > :08:59.death is not thought to be suspicious.

:09:00. > :09:12.Will you stop making that revolting noise, Vivian. Desperately right on,

:09:13. > :09:15.more than a little tragic. This wasn't just a funny character. If

:09:16. > :09:27.you were a student in the 80s you probably met someone like him.

:09:28. > :09:33.Alternative comedy had landed on television. They took the template

:09:34. > :09:40.and turned up the volume of the hyperactive cartoon violence. They

:09:41. > :09:43.met at university in Manchester in the 70s and became part of the new

:09:44. > :09:51.world of the comedy club. But it was his idea for a sitcom about for

:09:52. > :09:58.students which made his name. I am going to write to my MP. You have

:09:59. > :10:06.not got an MP, you are an anarchist. If you needed comic

:10:07. > :10:17.swagger, he was your man. Flash by name, flash by nature. Black adder

:10:18. > :10:17.and the new statesman. But in 1998, he

:10:18. > :10:26.and the new statesman. But in 1998, suffered serious injuries in an

:10:27. > :10:33.accident with a quad bike. He did return to our screens. Last year he

:10:34. > :10:37.appeared on Jonathan Creek. Lots of people have spoken of their sadness,

:10:38. > :10:43.the loss of a great talents whose place in comedy history will always

:10:44. > :10:48.be that moment in the early 80s when a cliff loving anarchist led the

:10:49. > :10:54.charge of a new generation of comedians and a new way of making us

:10:55. > :11:01.laugh. Who has been tampering with my question cards. It was me, it was

:11:02. > :11:05.me. The conditions at a care home in

:11:06. > :11:11.West Sussex have been described as harrowing by a review into the

:11:12. > :11:13.deaths of 19 elderly residents. The Orchid view home near Gatwick was

:11:14. > :11:17.closed three years ago after allegations of abuse and neglect.

:11:18. > :11:23.The report has called for a number of changes to be made to the

:11:24. > :11:27.industry. Outside it looked smart, but inside

:11:28. > :11:31.Orchid view nursing home near Crawley, the appalling lack of care

:11:32. > :11:37.left residents hungry, thirsty and in pain. This case review said it

:11:38. > :11:44.seemed a home to put money ahead of elderly and vulnerable people.

:11:45. > :11:50.Neglect directly contributed to the deaths of five residents, among them

:11:51. > :11:54.Jean Halfpenny. She was overdosed on warfarin and then start shredded

:11:55. > :12:00.records to hide what happened. Her daughter now wants a public enquiry.

:12:01. > :12:03.When you hear the stories of the 19 other families, it is shocking.

:12:04. > :12:04.Vulnerable people just left unprotected.

:12:05. > :12:08.other families, it is shocking. Vulnerable people just Just those

:12:09. > :12:14.involved are still unaccountable. Orchid view was owned by Southern

:12:15. > :12:19.Cross, which was one of the largest dividers of care. That it was in

:12:20. > :12:20.serious financial difficulties and has gone out of business.

:12:21. > :12:27.serious financial difficulties and has gone out It was not managed all

:12:28. > :12:33.were led. It was haphazard. The report author says medicines were

:12:34. > :12:37.mishandled, staff or poorly trained and overstretched. He says Southern

:12:38. > :12:44.Cross were responsible for what went wrong. They were a business, running

:12:45. > :12:49.a care business. They were taking public and private resources. They

:12:50. > :12:56.were not providing the care or taking action to remedy that.

:12:57. > :13:00.Consultant nurse, led the health and social care team sent in to try to

:13:01. > :13:06.sort out the problems, but she says nobody was listening. Even when we

:13:07. > :13:09.gave them warning of who we were going to see, they could not

:13:10. > :13:15.achieve. That is what I found more shocking and distressing. They were

:13:16. > :13:22.still incapable of responding when we were pointing out to them what

:13:23. > :13:26.was going wrong. You could see bruises where she was pulled up

:13:27. > :13:33.using her hands instead of being lifted up under her arms. The report

:13:34. > :13:37.does say health and care authorities and the regulator should have done

:13:38. > :13:41.more when relatives complained. Leslie Lincoln agrees with the

:13:42. > :13:46.report that a privately run homes should face the same scrutiny as the

:13:47. > :13:53.NHS. As a society it is important. Each and every one of us might have

:13:54. > :13:57.a person in that situation or be in that situation. If we don't stand up

:13:58. > :14:03.now and say it is wrong, it will continue. The regulator and other

:14:04. > :14:08.authorities say they have made changes as a result of what happened

:14:09. > :14:15.and a new law says it will be easier to hold companies to account for

:14:16. > :14:19.failings. 28 people are known to have died

:14:20. > :14:22.after Taliban militants disguised ad security forces stormed Pakistan's

:14:23. > :14:28.busiest airport last night. Eyewitnesses said it looked as if

:14:29. > :14:34.war had broken out as they attacked Karachi airport. Ten of the dead

:14:35. > :14:47.were militants as part of the five hour-long attack.

:14:48. > :14:49.Turned into a virtual war zone, Pakistan's biggest airport. A gun

:14:50. > :14:50.battle that lasted all night until government troops finally took

:14:51. > :15:11.control around dawn. night sky. Just how heavily armed

:15:12. > :15:15.the ten attackers were is clear from their weapons - grenades, rocket

:15:16. > :15:20.launchers and suicide belts. And also food and water, suggesting they

:15:21. > :15:24.were planning a siege, or to hijack a plane. But their plan failed. The

:15:25. > :15:31.Pakistan government raised its troops for their swift response.

:15:32. > :15:37.TRANSLATION: Our forces have done a tremendous job. You saw how quickly

:15:38. > :15:41.they controlled the situation. Our army rangers and police tackled the

:15:42. > :15:45.situation nicely. We killed all the terrorists involved in the

:15:46. > :15:49.incident. In claiming responsibility, a spokesman for the

:15:50. > :15:52.Pakistan Taliban said the attack was in revenge for the death of this

:15:53. > :15:58.leader, killed in a drone strike last year. But he also warned more

:15:59. > :16:04.attacks may be planned. So, who are the Pakistan Taliban? Well, they are

:16:05. > :16:09.not the same as the Taliban in Afghanistan, though there are right.

:16:10. > :16:12.Their insurgency is against the Pakistan government. They have

:16:13. > :16:18.staged numerous attacks. Recent attempts at peace talks by Nawaz

:16:19. > :16:21.Sharif caused a split in their ranks, and it is possible this

:16:22. > :16:28.attack was to try to show they had not been weakened. It would have

:16:29. > :16:32.caused a lot of commercial damage if they had managed to hit commercial

:16:33. > :16:35.airliners, and of course it would have provided them with the iconic

:16:36. > :16:47.images which they need for their Gander campaign. The attack raises

:16:48. > :16:50.questions about Pakistan's security. Our top story -5 schools in

:16:51. > :16:54.Birmingham are to be placed in special measures after claims of

:16:55. > :17:01.infiltration by hardline extremists. Still to come, tackling Rio's

:17:02. > :17:03.traffic, the England squad ventures out. On BBC London's,

:17:04. > :17:08.traffic, the England squad ventures out. On BBC London, an Islamic

:17:09. > :17:10.primary school in Luton has been criticised. And fighting fire, the

:17:11. > :17:25.mayor opens a new training centre. There are now just 100 days of

:17:26. > :17:31.campaigning left before people in Scotland cast their vote on

:17:32. > :17:37.independence. 's Brown entered the fray today, saying the pro-union

:17:38. > :17:45.campaign had been wrong to be so negative about what an independent

:17:46. > :17:48.Scotland could mean. An average of the last six polls of those who have

:17:49. > :17:55.made up their minds shows the no campaign is leading, with 58% of

:17:56. > :18:00.Scots wanting to stay in the union, with support particularly strong

:18:01. > :18:04.among women. That leaves 42% now backing an independent Scotland, and

:18:05. > :18:13.the yes campaign knows it has to do more to convince female voters.

:18:14. > :18:16.They have had so far the stronger and more active grass-roots

:18:17. > :18:20.campaign, but the pro-independence camp are still behind in the polls,

:18:21. > :18:24.and one of the reasons is gender. Women, say the polls, are much more

:18:25. > :18:29.sceptical about independence than men. Why watching Mark I asked the

:18:30. > :18:35.staff at this Edinburgh beauty salon. I am a mother, so I think of

:18:36. > :18:40.the risk for the Next Generation. That is what shapes my decision. I

:18:41. > :18:46.do not suppose that is exclusively female. We just have not made up our

:18:47. > :18:52.minds yet. It is possible we are still deciding. We are surely the

:18:53. > :18:57.Queens of overanalysing, possibly rightly analysing. I think women

:18:58. > :19:01.will tend to have a lot more information in front of them than

:19:02. > :19:05.men before making a decision. Persuading more women to vote yes is

:19:06. > :19:08.now an urgent priority for the Scottish Government. The Deputy

:19:09. > :19:15.First Minister used this landmark day to address an all women

:19:16. > :19:19.gathering. That vote is the greatest opportunity we will ever have to

:19:20. > :19:28.build a better, more prosperous and fairer country for ourselves and for

:19:29. > :19:31.generations to come. The pro-union Better Together campaign also have

:19:32. > :19:35.an urgent priority - to stop the flow of traditional Labour voters

:19:36. > :19:41.crossing to the independence camp. So, all three unionist parties are

:19:42. > :19:44.now promising greater powers to the Scottish Parliament. The message is

:19:45. > :19:51.that voting no is also patriotic and Scottish. This is not an auction of

:19:52. > :19:55.patria design, in which the Nationalists are the highest

:19:56. > :19:59.bidders. Nobody questions the sincerity of their opinions, and

:20:00. > :20:03.they should not question hours. Whatever the voters eventually

:20:04. > :20:07.decide, the political centre of gravity has already shifted in the

:20:08. > :20:10.direction of the Nationalists, with all three Westminster parties now

:20:11. > :20:16.agreed that they will offer much greater powers to the Scottish

:20:17. > :20:20.Parliament. Today, Mr Brown accused the Prime Minister of mishandling

:20:21. > :20:22.the campaign, of patronising the Scots by threatening them with

:20:23. > :20:25.everything from the loss of the currency to the loss of shipbuilding

:20:26. > :20:33.jobs. He said David Cameron should accept Alex Salmond's challenge to a

:20:34. > :20:38.televised debate. The campaign could still be lost, as he put it, by

:20:39. > :20:41.mistake. The Liberal Democrat leader, Nick Clegg, has been trying

:20:42. > :20:46.to belly his party after their disastrous performance in the recent

:20:47. > :20:50.elections. In a speech today, he insisted the coalition with the

:20:51. > :20:54.Tories have not robbed the Liberal Democrats of their soul. He tried to

:20:55. > :20:57.distance himself from the Conservatives' economic strategy.

:20:58. > :21:03.Chris Mason was there. The local elections left the remaining Liberal

:21:04. > :21:05.Democrat councillors feeling like an endangered species. The European

:21:06. > :21:11.Parliament elections left their presence in Brussels and Strasbourg

:21:12. > :21:17.pretty much extinct, with a single MEP. The fear is now at Westminster.

:21:18. > :21:23.Nick Clegg acknowledged that there have been some very gory spending

:21:24. > :21:27.decisions to be taken since he has been in coalition, but he focused on

:21:28. > :21:30.the future, saying that if the Lib Dems are in coalition government

:21:31. > :21:35.after the election, once the deficit is dealt with, then there would be a

:21:36. > :21:40.willingness to borrow to invest in housing. If you want to avoid the

:21:41. > :21:44.boom and bust problems of the British economy, with house prices

:21:45. > :21:48.going up, leading to financial stresses and strains, you have got

:21:49. > :21:53.to build more homes. It is socially and morally the right thing to do,

:21:54. > :21:58.as well as economically. Nick Clegg said that cordon Brown had been

:21:59. > :22:04.borrowing a bad name, saying that it was justified to promote economic

:22:05. > :22:09.truth. He also said that the Conservatives worst successes

:22:10. > :22:14.included nasty nurse. In the opinion polls, he has a huge mountain to

:22:15. > :22:19.climb. England have been training for the first time in Rio today

:22:20. > :22:22.ahead of their World Cup opener against Italy on Saturday. But the

:22:23. > :22:29.build-up to the tournament continues to be overshadowed by protests. Dan

:22:30. > :22:35.Roan is in Rio for us. How much of a worry are these protests? This is

:22:36. > :22:38.just the latest unrest to hit Brazil in the build-up to these World Cup

:22:39. > :22:42.Final is. One year ago, there were anti-government protests amid anger

:22:43. > :22:48.at the amount of money being spent on this, the most expensive World

:22:49. > :22:53.Cup Finals ever, and amid demands for improved public services. This

:22:54. > :22:58.time, it is down there were clashes on the streets between riot police

:22:59. > :23:02.and protesters in Sao Paulo. It involved a strike by transport

:23:03. > :23:10.workers. The opening match is now just three days away. There is a

:23:11. > :23:16.threat that the strikes will affect the subway, which fans will be using

:23:17. > :23:20.to get to that match on Thursday. Meanwhile, England in training today

:23:21. > :23:26.- how are their preparations going? In fact, several of the England

:23:27. > :23:30.players are due here in the next few minutes, on a community visit. I

:23:31. > :23:34.will ask them how they are getting on. They are trying to be good

:23:35. > :23:38.tourists, unlike perhaps England teams in the past. Today they

:23:39. > :23:45.trained for the first time at their spectacular training complex, in the

:23:46. > :23:51.shadow of Sugarloaf Mountain. The only concern for England is that

:23:52. > :23:55.perennial footballer's curse, a tight groin, for Steven Gerrard.

:23:56. > :24:02.That will be a concern for Roy Hodgson. On Saturday, they face

:24:03. > :24:12.Italy in the Amazon in their first match, in Manaus.

:24:13. > :24:17.Tennis, and the Aegon Championship got under way today at Queen's Club.

:24:18. > :24:23.And Andy Murray has announced that he will be coached I Amelie

:24:24. > :24:29.Mauresmo. She said it was not a big concern, the fact that she is the

:24:30. > :24:33.first female coach to coach a leading Grand Slam winning male

:24:34. > :24:42.tennis placer player in recent years. It is not really something

:24:43. > :24:48.that I was thinking of doing when I start stopped being a tennis player.

:24:49. > :24:58.And we came up with the wheel from both sides to give it a shot. There

:24:59. > :25:02.has never been such a high-profile pairing, although top men players

:25:03. > :25:08.have been coached by women before. Mauresmo is a Grand Slam winner

:25:09. > :25:15.herself. Andy Murray also has two Grand Slams, both of those won under

:25:16. > :25:21.the inscrutable Ivan Lendl. Now, he says he wants someone who will

:25:22. > :25:24.listen. I have always had quite a strong female influence in my

:25:25. > :25:28.career. With my mum especially, I found that she listened extremely

:25:29. > :25:35.well. That is something that I felt right now that I needed. Eyebrows

:25:36. > :25:38.have been raised - how will she get on in the men's locker room, for

:25:44. > :25:47.he wants someone who has got experience at the top, knows what

:25:48. > :25:52.they are doing, whether it is a female or male. I think it is a

:25:53. > :25:57.smart appointment. Starting here at Queen's Club, the two have agreed to

:25:58. > :26:00.work together for the grass court season. But if she can guide him to

:26:09. > :26:14.longer than just one summer. What does the weather hold?

:26:15. > :26:20.It is a really mixed bag today, the equal warmest day of the year in

:26:21. > :26:27.Gravesend, but equally, some pretty heavy downpours in parts of

:26:28. > :26:36.Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire. And some heavy rainfall as well.

:26:37. > :26:45.There is more rain coming up from the south overnight. But many places

:27:02. > :27:04.with a south-westerly breeze. I suspect the main focus for the

:27:05. > :27:11.showers in the morning is a bit further north and west. We will see

:27:12. > :27:16.some showers in the far north of Scotland. It will turn into a day of

:27:41. > :27:44.to get play pretty much all day long. Things are settling down
