:00:29. > :00:36.I have done everything can trying to convince my colleagues the current

:00:37. > :00:38.policy on Gaza is morally indefensible and it is not in

:00:43. > :00:46.On the ground in Gaza a 72-hour ceasefire is in place, but

:00:50. > :00:52.We'll be looking at the chances of the ceasefire holding and the impact

:01:39. > :01:42.Good evening and welcome to the BBC News at Six.

:01:43. > :01:47.The conflict in Gaza prompted a resignation from

:01:48. > :01:50.the government here today, with the Foreign Office minister, Baroness

:01:51. > :01:58.Warsi, saying British policy on Gaza is 'morally indefensible'.

:01:59. > :02:01.Labour praised what it called a resignation of real integrity,

:02:02. > :02:03.but the Chancellor, George Osborne, called it "unnecessary".

:02:04. > :02:12.Here's our deputy political editor, James Landale: What language could

:02:13. > :02:18.be used to describe these images? The government says the killing of

:02:19. > :02:22.civilians in Gaza is intolerable, but it will not say the Israeli

:02:23. > :02:25.response is disproportionate or criminal, and it is this lack of

:02:26. > :02:30.condemnation which prompted this minister to resign, the first Muslim

:02:31. > :02:34.woman in Cabinet decided she could no longer support the government 's

:02:35. > :02:39.foreign policy. Over the last four weeks I have done everything I can

:02:40. > :02:43.at formal and informal meetings to convince my colleagues that our

:02:44. > :02:47.current policy on Gaza is morally indefensible, it is not in our

:02:48. > :02:53.interests, not in British interests and it will have consequences in the

:02:54. > :02:59.end I felt the government 's position was not moving. On a point

:03:00. > :03:01.of principle I had to resign. The Prime Minister was informed of her

:03:02. > :03:08.decision while on holiday in Portugal, shortly before it was

:03:09. > :03:14.announced on social media. He said he regretted the decision. Others

:03:15. > :03:17.had stronger language. This is a disappointing and unnecessary

:03:18. > :03:21.decision, the British government is working with others to bring peace

:03:22. > :03:26.to Gaza. We now have a tentative cease-fire which we hope will hold.

:03:27. > :03:30.Lady Warsi once and for election in Dewsbury, in Yorkshire, and some

:03:31. > :03:35.that they thought she had done the right thing. I would agree with her

:03:36. > :03:41.on that. Other policies whatever, but I have to agree with her. I

:03:42. > :03:48.support her, it is good, yes. I think Israel has gone beyond. What

:03:49. > :03:52.can you say. Cider Warsi has long been a supporter of David Cameron

:03:53. > :04:00.without being part of his inner circle -- Sayeeda Warsi. I am proud

:04:01. > :04:06.to be standing here with the first Muslim woman in a cabinet. She was a

:04:07. > :04:12.symbol perhaps that the Tory party was changing, but she was also

:04:13. > :04:16.outspoken and mocked his reliance on fellow old Etonians. David Cameron

:04:17. > :04:20.says he has expressed grave concern about civilian casualties and called

:04:21. > :04:32.on Israel to exercise restraint, but her resignation means he's on much

:04:33. > :04:36.firmer pressure to do things. This is a serious matter of international

:04:37. > :04:41.policy. I like her, would like the UK to have a more constructive

:04:42. > :04:45.policy. People have been shocked by the casualties and suffering we have

:04:46. > :04:48.seen in Gaza, and I hope David Cameron will reflect on what she

:04:49. > :04:54.says in her resignation letter. To change his approach. Yesterday Lady

:04:55. > :04:58.Warsi took part in an act of remembrance over an old war. Today

:04:59. > :05:02.though, she delivered an act of defiance over a new one.

:05:03. > :05:04.James Landale: In Gaza, the three-day ceasefire

:05:05. > :05:08.between Israel and Hamas appears to be holding - Israeli ground

:05:09. > :05:10.troops have pulled out, but the human cost of the

:05:11. > :05:14.four week conflict is clear. On the Palestinian side,

:05:15. > :05:18.more than 1,800 people have been killed,

:05:19. > :05:21.according to the UN most of them were civilians.

:05:22. > :05:24.67 Israelis have also died during the operation

:05:25. > :05:26.- all but four of them soldiers. Our correspondent Jon Donnison is in

:05:27. > :05:39.Beit Hanoun in the North of Gaza. 12 hours in, the cease-fire is

:05:40. > :05:43.indeed holding. Today, hundreds of thousands of Palestinians displaced

:05:44. > :05:48.have been returning to their homes or what is left of them. Frankly we

:05:49. > :05:52.have been out today and we have seen a devastating level of destruction.

:05:53. > :05:56.We went to one of the worst affected areas, Beit Hanina and come in the

:05:57. > :06:04.north of Gaza, to meet one Palestinian family. This man is 80.

:06:05. > :06:08.north of Gaza, to meet one He has survived half a dozen wars in

:06:09. > :06:10.Gaza, and a lifetime of struggle. He has

:06:11. > :06:21.Gaza, and a lifetime of struggle. He home destroyed. For the third time.

:06:22. > :06:27.Mohammed is one of 34 grandchildren. He is salvaging what he can from the

:06:28. > :06:37.rubble of what was his fourth wall. He is only 14. This was the man's

:06:38. > :06:45.bedroom. It was a room with a view. One mile away in the dust, you can

:06:46. > :06:52.see the Israeli tanks withdrawing. He was a headteacher, he taught

:06:53. > :06:56.history. He is not a Hamas supporter but he says this war did not start

:06:57. > :07:00.one month ago with rockets and air strikes, it is about Israel's

:07:01. > :07:07.decades long military occupation and the land. We want this returned to

:07:08. > 0:00:17us now. Gaza Strip. And the West Bank. Will you stay? Yes, I will
