:00:11. > :00:13.against Islamic State in Syria while pushing for Britain to join in.

:00:14. > :00:16.After a visit to the theatre, which saw the largest loss

:00:17. > :00:21.of life in the Paris attacks, the Prime Minister calls for Britain to

:00:22. > :00:22.I firmly support the action that President Hollande

:00:23. > :00:34.It is my firm conviction that Britain should do so, too.

:00:35. > :00:37.Brussels remains in lockdown and on high alert for the third day

:00:38. > :00:39.running, amid fears of a terror attack.

:00:40. > :00:41.Here meanwhile the Prime Minister commits an extra

:00:42. > :00:55.Also tonight: spending for military hardware

:00:56. > :01:08.come, some of the worst affected countries see no alternative to

:01:09. > :01:17.planes for Lossiemouth, but fewer warships will be built on the Clyde.

:01:18. > :01:19.Like it or loathe it, you can't miss it.

:01:20. > :01:37.What do you make of the new Scotland strip?

:01:38. > :01:44.David Cameron has offered France use of an RAF airbase in Cyprus

:01:45. > :01:46.and air-to-air refuelling services, to help in its bombing campaign

:01:47. > :01:50.against so-called Islamic state targets in Syria.

:01:51. > :01:53.After laying a wreath at the Bataclan Theatre in Paris, site of

:01:54. > :01:58.the majority of the deaths in last week's terror attacks, Mr Cameron

:01:59. > :02:02.said he supported the French military strikes and it is his firm

:02:03. > :02:04.conviction that Britain should also join in the fight against

:02:05. > :02:11.Later in the Commons, he unveiled the government's five-year defence

:02:12. > :02:12.review, which promises an increase in spending.

:02:13. > :02:20.Here's our Political Editor Laura Kuenssberg.

:02:21. > :02:35.As if it needed pointing out, the batter -- Bataclan. Words in Paris

:02:36. > :02:39.were clearly harder to find. For months, Paris has been bombing

:02:40. > :02:43.Syria, now for vengeance as well. TRANSLATION: We will intensify our

:02:44. > :02:48.strikes, we will choose targets that will do as much damage as possible

:02:49. > :02:52.to this terrorist army. Just hours before he unveiled a bigger, more

:02:53. > :02:57.John military, the promised it crystal clear, he wants to join

:02:58. > :03:01.France in their -- more agile military. I firmly support President

:03:02. > :03:05.Hollande to strike Isil in Syria and it is my firm conviction that

:03:06. > :03:08.Britain should also do so. Sending our planes to bomb so-called Islamic

:03:09. > :03:13.state in Syria would be the first action of what one Cabinet minister

:03:14. > :03:17.described as a new military phase. More planes, more troops ready to go

:03:18. > :03:21.and more interventions around the world potentially. This, from the

:03:22. > :03:29.same Prime Minister whose last defence review led to this, RAF

:03:30. > :03:34.Nimrod scrapped, smashed up, put beyond use. Today, though, promise

:03:35. > :03:39.of the case for strikes in Syria this Thursday and more modern forces

:03:40. > :03:43.for years to come. The threats we face today go beyond this evil death

:03:44. > :03:48.cult. From the crisis in Ukraine, to the risks of cyber attacks and

:03:49. > :03:53.pandemics. The world is more dangerous and uncertain today than

:03:54. > :03:58.even five years ago. While every government must choose how to spend

:03:59. > :04:00.the money it has available, every penny of which is hard earned by

:04:01. > :04:04.taxpayers, this government has taken a clear decision to invest in our

:04:05. > :04:09.security and safeguard our prosperity. How will he apply

:04:10. > :04:12.lessons learnt in Libya, Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere, to

:04:13. > :04:18.Britain's role in the escalating war in Iraq and Syria, to ensure that

:04:19. > :04:22.further disastrous mistakes are voided? Britain does need strong

:04:23. > :04:30.military, security forces, to keep us safe. And to take a lead in

:04:31. > :04:34.humanitarian and peacekeeping missions. Questions Downing Street

:04:35. > :04:38.will try to answer, as they make the case. In Syria. There is growing

:04:39. > :04:41.confidence behind the gates that ministers are more likely to get the

:04:42. > :04:46.support they need to start bombing Syria. But today is also about a new

:04:47. > :04:52.assertiveness of the Ministry of Defence and with that extra cash.

:04:53. > :04:57.But more spending their means budgets elsewhere will be even

:04:58. > :05:00.tighter. And thousands of Ministry of Defence staff will lose their

:05:01. > :05:04.jobs. As part of billions of pounds of efficiency savings. Otherwise

:05:05. > :05:08.known as cuts. Under this Prime Minister, we have seen a decimation

:05:09. > :05:13.of defence in Scotland, two out of three airbases have ceased flying

:05:14. > :05:16.operations, there has been a disproportionate cuts to units and

:05:17. > :05:22.manpower. Tory ministers promised an Army super best -- super base in

:05:23. > :05:28.West Lothian and doubling army numbers in Scotland. Instead, that

:05:29. > :05:30.was dropped. The government hopes British planes can join these French

:05:31. > :05:33.flyers setting off for Syria. In their words, ministers want to

:05:34. > :05:36.project our values around the world. In other words, to protect and

:05:37. > :05:39.intervene where they see fit. So as we've been hearing, the

:05:40. > :05:42.Prime Minister has been outlining the Government's plans for defence

:05:43. > :05:45.spending for the next five years. There'll be an extra ?12 billion

:05:46. > :05:50.for equipment, a new fleet of maritime patrol aircraft and

:05:51. > :05:53.two rapid-reaction brigades by 2025. He also confirmed

:05:54. > :05:56.a new terror contingency plan, with up to 10,000 military personnel

:05:57. > :05:58.available to support the police in Our Defence Correspondent Jonathan

:05:59. > :06:09.Beale reports. RAF jets and drones have been

:06:10. > :06:12.hitting the group known as Islamic The attacks

:06:13. > :06:15.in Paris have spurred calls to Today's defence review says

:06:16. > :06:22.the threat from IS has increased. But it's not

:06:23. > :06:29.the only security concern. The British Army has been

:06:30. > :06:32.on exercise in the Baltics, The defence review also highlights

:06:33. > :06:38.the threat posed by Russia. And the need to prepare Britain's

:06:39. > :06:46.Armed Forces for the worst. We've already committed

:06:47. > :06:51.in Afghanistan a few years ago. That was where the bulk

:06:52. > :06:54.of the army's effort was going. We've been reconfiguring the army,

:06:55. > :06:56.already. And preparing a force that is more

:06:57. > :06:59.flexible, more adaptable, that can Where our allies need help and where

:07:00. > :07:06.we need to defend our interests. In this strategic defence

:07:07. > :07:09.and security review, the Government says there will be

:07:10. > :07:14.an extra ?12 billion for equipment. Bringing the total over

:07:15. > :07:16.the next decade to ?178 billion. Out of that, the RAF will be getting

:07:17. > :07:23.the new stealth fighter, the F35. The new carriers will have

:07:24. > :07:27.24 these jets by 2023. The Navy will have

:07:28. > :07:29.at least eight new anti-submarine The first of these will be

:07:30. > :07:34.in service by the middle While

:07:35. > :07:40.the Army will be buying hundreds of new armoured vehicles to form

:07:41. > :07:42.two rapid-reaction strike brigades. The delivery of all this

:07:43. > :07:52.equipment will take time. The biggest single cost, though,

:07:53. > :07:54.will be replacing the four submarines that carry

:07:55. > :07:58.Britain's Trident nuclear weapons, up from around ?20 billion,

:07:59. > :08:05.to more than ?30 billion. This equipment,

:08:06. > :08:11.like the new aircraft carriers here will need fully-trained crews,

:08:12. > :08:13.the Armed Forces lost thousands of personnel in the last defence

:08:14. > :08:16.review and some branches are now They have all got to be manned,

:08:17. > :08:20.they all need to have intelligent men and women either on the ground

:08:21. > :08:24.in the land environment, in the air piloting these aircraft, on-board

:08:25. > :08:28.these extremely capable ships. And we've got to create

:08:29. > :08:30.a critical mass that will continue to attract and then retain some

:08:31. > :08:33.of the brightest and best, who will step up to contribute to

:08:34. > :08:39.the of this country. who will step up to contribute to

:08:40. > :08:42.the security of this country. And it's not just

:08:43. > :08:44.the police who are training This review says 10,000 troops could

:08:45. > :08:47.be called on, The demands on our Armed

:08:48. > :09:00.Forces have not diminished. The Belgian capital, Brussels,

:09:01. > :09:02.is still on high alert, for a third day with schools, shops

:09:03. > :09:05.and the underground metro system remaining closed following renewed

:09:06. > :09:07.warnings of possible attacks. Police have arrested another five

:09:08. > :09:16.people, taking the total Belgian prosecutors say a man has

:09:17. > :09:17.been charged with involvement in the Paris attacks earlier this month.

:09:18. > :09:19.A key suspect in the Paris attacks, Salah Abdeslam,

:09:20. > :09:27.James Reynolds is in Brussels for us tonight.

:09:28. > :09:33.No sign of this unprecedented security clamp-down coming to an end

:09:34. > :09:37.to develop and in the last few minutes. Important to stress that

:09:38. > :09:41.the person charged has not yet been named. We know that this city is

:09:42. > :09:44.still incredibly nervous and many people are simply deciding it is

:09:45. > :09:49.safest to stay at home and let the police do their work.

:09:50. > :09:55.This city is searching for a terror cell.

:09:56. > :09:58.It was the wrong night for this driver to get close to the police.

:09:59. > :10:03.At night, security forces carried out raids in several neighbourhoods.

:10:04. > :10:05.The government has shut down the metro and closed the

:10:06. > :10:22.This morning, Gabriel risked a trip to the park with

:10:23. > :10:28.They've got their heads covered and looked frightening to him.

:10:29. > :10:39.The police patrol possible targets, including this train station.

:10:40. > :10:41.The government has told everybody to stay away from crowds,

:10:42. > :10:44.but the people in this line can't help being in one place.

:10:45. > :10:46.They're queueing up for the train to Paris.

:10:47. > :10:49.They are being checked very closely, when they get to the front

:10:50. > :10:55.Investigators believe that nine men were involved in the Paris attacks.

:10:56. > :11:03.Last Wednesday, the police killed the group's suspected ringleader

:11:04. > :11:16.The only surviving attacker is Salah Abdeslam and the police

:11:17. > :11:18.believe he fled to Belgium.

:11:19. > :11:21.The authorities fear that he or others may be ready

:11:22. > :11:28.Salah Abdeslam comes from this neighbourhood in Brussels.

:11:29. > :11:33.This afternoon, its residents felt uneasy.

:11:34. > :11:37.Wherever you go in the world, bad people, this man who didn't want

:11:38. > :11:42.The police will have to do their checks.

:11:43. > :11:45.Their operations have yet to uncover the main suspect.

:11:46. > :11:48.The city may not be able to return to normal, until it finds him.

:11:49. > :12:03.How long can this capital live under a state of maximum alert?

:12:04. > :12:06.It's been described in court as the "largest burglary in English

:12:07. > :12:09.Four men have gone on trial in connection with the multi-million

:12:10. > :12:13.pound jewellery raid in Hatton Garden in London last Easter.

:12:14. > :12:15.Valuables and gems, worth an estimated ?14 million

:12:16. > :12:20.Our Home Affairs Correspondent Daniel Sandford is at

:12:21. > :12:27.Daniel, the prosecution is alleging this robbery had been

:12:28. > :12:39.Yes, opening day of what will be a riveting case. The jury heard that

:12:40. > :12:44.the plot had been actively planned for almost a year, including several

:12:45. > :12:51.Friday night is plotting in Islington pub. And that millions of

:12:52. > :12:52.pounds worth of gold bars, diamonds, jewellery, watches and cash are

:12:53. > :12:59.still missing. It was the Thursday night before the

:13:00. > :13:07.Easter bank holiday weekend, the start of what was to be the biggest

:13:08. > :13:11.burglary in English legal history. Four men unloading a transit van and

:13:12. > :13:17.according to the prosecution, caught on CCTV entering the building

:13:18. > :13:21.through the rear fire exit. Once in the building, the prosecution say,

:13:22. > :13:24.they disabled the lift on the second floor and dropped down from the

:13:25. > :13:31.ground floor to the basement where the safe deposit vault is. There,

:13:32. > :13:38.bejewelled three holes in a massive concrete wall. But then hit the back

:13:39. > :13:41.of the metal safe-deposit cabinets. So, the prosecution say, on that

:13:42. > :13:45.first night, the men failed to get right through into the vault and

:13:46. > :13:51.leaving through the back door again, they drove away, empty-handed. But

:13:52. > :13:57.some of the men went back, two nights later to finish the job. The

:13:58. > :14:02.prosecution say they took an estimated ?40 million of diamonds,

:14:03. > :14:07.gold bars, ingots, jewellery, watches and cash. Only a third of it

:14:08. > :14:11.has been recovered. Four men have pleaded guilty to the record

:14:12. > :14:15.breaking burglary, the ringleaders, the prosecution called them, men who

:14:16. > :14:18.brought a great deal of experience in serious acquisitive crime.

:14:19. > :14:23.Including 76-year-old Brian Reader who was called the Master by the

:14:24. > :14:28.other men. And went to the burglary by bus. The men on trial today were

:14:29. > :14:32.Kyle Wood, accused of being in the building when the drilling took

:14:33. > :14:36.place, Paul Lincoln, another alleged conspirator, John Harbison, who is

:14:37. > :14:39.accused of moving some of the stolen property and Hugh Doyle, also

:14:40. > :14:44.accused of helping move the jewellery. But Hugh Doyle on the

:14:45. > :14:48.right and the other three in this trial denied all the charges against

:14:49. > :14:54.them. The case for the prosecution continues tomorrow.

:14:55. > :14:58.After a visit to the theatre which saw the largest loss

:15:35. > :15:36.The United Nations says weather-related disasters have

:15:37. > :15:39.become more common over the past 20 years with events such

:15:40. > :15:41.as floods and storms killing more than 600,000 people
