:00:09. > :00:11.police are ready to name the men responsible for Saturday

:00:12. > :00:19.The BBC can confirm that one of them is Khurram Butt,

:00:20. > :00:26.a 27-year-old man from Barking in East London.

:00:27. > :00:28.Police raid more addresses in east London today -

:00:29. > :00:31.the Met's chief says Britain is facing a new reality.

:00:32. > :00:34.All of us need to look at the overall

:00:35. > :00:35.strategy, the tactics, the

:00:36. > :00:43.resourcing, and indeed, what we are doing within our communities.

:00:44. > :00:45.Theresa May has been defending her record on security

:00:46. > :00:49.after Jeremy Corbyn backs calls for her to resign.

:00:50. > :00:54.She was at the Home Office for all this time, presided over these cuts

:00:55. > :00:57.in police numbers, and now is saying that we have a problem.

:00:58. > :00:59.Yes, we do have a problem - we shouldn't ever

:01:00. > :01:05.We have protected counterterrorism policing budgets.

:01:06. > :01:08.We have also provided funding for an increase in the number

:01:09. > :01:14.Since 2015, we have protected overall police budgets.

:01:15. > :01:25.Canadian Christine Archibald is the first victim

:01:26. > :01:37.Tonight, a vigil will be held for the victims of the attack.

:01:38. > :01:39.And coming up in the sport on BBC News:

:01:40. > :01:42.More on the news that former Newcastle midfielder Cheick Tiote

:01:43. > :01:59.He collapsed during training with his club in China.

:02:00. > :02:02.Good evening and welcome to the BBC News at Six.

:02:03. > :02:05.Britain is facing an unprecedented wave of terror attacks,

:02:06. > :02:06.according to Cressida Dick, the Metropolitan

:02:07. > :02:22.She's described the challenge facing the country as a new reality.

:02:23. > :02:25.In the last hour, police are preparing to name two

:02:26. > :02:29.crowds of people near London Bridge on saturday night, killing seven

:02:30. > :02:33.Police are said to be working their way through an enormous amount

:02:34. > :02:36.Our first report tonight is from our Home Editor, Mark Easton.

:02:37. > :02:40.We now know the identity of one of the three killers who brought death

:02:41. > :02:45.to London Bridge and a remarkable sub's was a 27 year from a British

:02:46. > :02:48.Pakistani family. Four years ago he worked in sales and customer

:02:49. > :02:57.services for Kentucky fried chicken. Last year, he was a customer service

:02:58. > :03:01.advisor for Transport For London. He was also a radical Islamist,

:03:02. > :03:08.pictured here for a Channel 4 documentary at an event organised

:03:09. > :03:11.for supporters of a man who encouraged people to join so-called

:03:12. > :03:14.Islamic State. There will be below the meant as to how someone with

:03:15. > :03:20.such well-known extremist views was able to carry out a murderous

:03:21. > :03:26.attack. Flowers at the border of what is now a huge crime scene in

:03:27. > :03:30.the heart of the capital, tents marking the places in Borough Market

:03:31. > :03:39.where people fell, forensic officers gathering clues and evidence. The

:03:40. > :03:45.head of the Metropolitan Police and the Mayor of London visited the area

:03:46. > :03:49.today. I am angry and furious that the three men are seeking to justify

:03:50. > :03:57.their actions by using the fake that I belong to. The idea -- the

:03:58. > :04:02.ideology they follow is poisonous and has no place in Islam. We know

:04:03. > :04:06.that for police officers were injured in the attack. One of duty

:04:07. > :04:09.officer would challenge one of the nice men is still in a serious

:04:10. > :04:14.condition. More than three dozen others are still in hospital, 18 of

:04:15. > :04:21.them critically ill. You like you need police and ambulance as soon as

:04:22. > :04:25.possible. -- we need police and ambulance as soon as possible. One

:04:26. > :04:29.of the victims was named today as 30-year-old Christine Archibald from

:04:30. > :04:34.Canada. It is deeply chilling and horribly sad to see what we have

:04:35. > :04:46.just seen, and to think about the barbarous acts on Saturday night. We

:04:47. > :04:51.so extraordinary courage and compassion from our public servants.

:04:52. > :04:55.London is getting back to normal. This bunch of flowers almost the

:04:56. > :05:01.only sign of the carnage there was here on London Bridge on Saturday

:05:02. > :05:06.night and into Sunday morning. But a huge police and security operation

:05:07. > :05:09.is continuing, trying to map the network of people behind the idea is

:05:10. > :05:16.that spawned mass murder on London's streets. In Newham in east London,

:05:17. > :05:24.locals were awoken at around 4:30am by an explosion as police raided a

:05:25. > :05:28.terrace house. Armed police went in, and after nearly 15 minutes, they

:05:29. > :05:37.brought three men and three women out. There was also a police

:05:38. > :05:42.operation at a garage. There were loud bangs and what may have been

:05:43. > :05:45.gunshots heard. Searchers continue. Seven women and four men rescued a

:05:46. > :05:51.few hundred metres up the road yesterday are still being held under

:05:52. > :05:55.the terrorism act. Today has also been about giving thanks and saying

:05:56. > :06:00.thanks to all those touched by the events of Saturday night. Really

:06:01. > :06:09.quite emotional. It is quite emotional. London is my hometown, so

:06:10. > :06:13.it means a lot to me. This evening, a vigil is being held in a public

:06:14. > :06:15.park just a short distance from where seven people lost their lives

:06:16. > :06:25.on a Saturday night in London town. A Canadian woman has become

:06:26. > :06:27.the first of the seven victims She was Christine Archibald,

:06:28. > :06:31.who was visiting London The number of patients

:06:32. > :06:35.still in critical care has This report from our special

:06:36. > :06:38.correspondent Allan Little The faces of those caught up

:06:39. > :06:43.in the attack reflect the character of London -

:06:44. > :06:45.diverse, global and a magnet drawing youth and energy

:06:46. > :06:52.from around the world. Chrissy Archibald, who was 30

:06:53. > :06:54.and from Canada, was walking on London Bridge with her fiance

:06:55. > :06:57.Tyler Ferguson when she was struck He heard tyres screeching,

:06:58. > :07:12.and he looked back and he just saw the mayhem that was going on,

:07:13. > :07:14.and the van hitting people. And then he ran up

:07:15. > :07:16.and tried CPR on her. Her family said she would not have

:07:17. > :07:22.understood the callous cruelty The French Foreign Ministry said

:07:23. > :07:28.one French citizen was murdered, another seven French nationals

:07:29. > :07:30.were injured, Candice Hedge was one of four

:07:31. > :07:37.Australians injured. She was stabbed in the throat

:07:38. > :07:43.and is now recovering in hospital. She was hiding at the time

:07:44. > :07:45.and the guy got her, and stabbed her

:07:46. > :07:47.in the neck somewhere. That's really all I know.

:07:48. > :07:50.I was really, really scared. But I eventually got

:07:51. > :07:54.onto the hospital, and they spoke to me,

:07:55. > :07:57.and they said she's fine now. She is going to be OK,

:07:58. > :08:00.that's the main thing. Daniel O'Neill, who's 23,

:08:01. > :08:02.suffered a seven inch wound His life was saved by a friend,

:08:03. > :08:07.who stopped the bleeding Jeff Ho, a journalist,

:08:08. > :08:16.was stabbed while time to stop I don't know whether it was stupid

:08:17. > :08:20.or noble, he said on Facebook, but that wasn't going to happen

:08:21. > :08:22.on my watch. Oliver Dowling from New Zealand

:08:23. > :08:25.needed four hours of surgery. His French girlfriend

:08:26. > :08:28.was also injured, and is in Brett Freeman, who is from

:08:29. > :08:35.East London, is a father of three A friend posted this

:08:36. > :08:38.picture on social media 18 people remain critically ill,

:08:39. > :08:45.most of those who died The list of those killed

:08:46. > :08:52.and injured reflects An attack in London sends

:08:53. > :08:57.its anguish around the world. This afternoon, the sister

:08:58. > :09:05.of a man who'd been missing following the London Bridge attack

:09:06. > :09:10.said she feared he was dead. Melissa McMullan, whose brother

:09:11. > :09:13.James was last seen outside one of the pubs struck by the attackers,

:09:14. > :09:15.said her pain "would Our special correspondent

:09:16. > :09:27.Lucy Manning reports Melissa McMullan has just had the

:09:28. > :09:30.news no sister wants to hear. She now believes her brother James was

:09:31. > :09:34.murdered in the London Bridge attack. This morning we received

:09:35. > :09:40.news from the police that my brother's bank card was found on one

:09:41. > :09:44.of the bodies from Saturday night's brutal attack, but they are unable

:09:45. > :09:49.to formally identify him until the coroner's report comes tomorrow.

:09:50. > :09:53.While our pain will never diminish, it is important for us to all carry

:09:54. > :09:58.on with our lives in direct opposition to all those who would

:09:59. > :10:04.try to destroy ours. James was 32 years old and from London, on a

:10:05. > :10:07.night out with friends in a pub on Borough high Street when he popped

:10:08. > :10:10.outside a cigarette. Despite the anguish and tears, Melissa wanted is

:10:11. > :10:15.the to let everyone know what her big brother was like. There will

:10:16. > :10:20.only ever be one James. Nowhere else will you find such humour and unique

:10:21. > :10:28.personality, someone who puts friends and family above all else.

:10:29. > :10:34.He was an inspiration. Melissa, how would you describe your brother?

:10:35. > :10:41.Loving and caring. And no one could ever replace my brother. The friends

:10:42. > :10:44.who were with James on Saturday night supported Melissa as she left

:10:45. > :10:49.Saint Thomas 's hospital this afternoon, all heartbroken. You were

:10:50. > :10:54.with him on Saturday night, and the force he was having fun. He was

:10:55. > :10:59.always the life of the party. Watching the football, James hates

:11:00. > :11:05.the football, always outside gathering for a cigarette. He didn't

:11:06. > :11:09.want to watch it with us. It was just a great night. What do you make

:11:10. > :11:15.of what has happened to your friend? It's an absolute disgrace. I can't

:11:16. > :11:21.even put into words how much... Yeah, like, why? What is the point?

:11:22. > :11:26.It doesn't achieve anything. All you're doing is breeding hate. How

:11:27. > :11:32.will you think of James when you think back to the French chap you

:11:33. > :11:38.had? Just his smiling face. Just James, he always had a smile. More

:11:39. > :11:41.than anything, Melissa says her son will desperately miss his uncle

:11:42. > :11:49.James. My little one loved him so much. He was always so excited to

:11:50. > :11:54.see him when he could. They used to spend hours being silly, taking

:11:55. > :12:03.silly photos of each other, messing around. He was so good with him. We

:12:04. > :12:06.will always have happy memories of our fantastic angle. Lucy Manning

:12:07. > :12:14.reporting on one family's tribute. As we've heard, crowds have been

:12:15. > :12:17.gathering near London Bridge this evening to honour the victims

:12:18. > :12:19.of the attack on Saturday night. Let's join our reporter there,

:12:20. > :12:30.Vishala Sri-Pathma. Describe the mood there. Sorry,

:12:31. > :12:33.George, I couldn't hear the question. Sadiq Khan has taken to

:12:34. > :12:39.the stage this beta the crowds here. He has been talking about the city

:12:40. > :12:42.standing together in solidarity. The crowd is still gathering here, and

:12:43. > :12:48.they have been gathering for the last 45 minutes or so, people on

:12:49. > :12:55.their way back from work, wanting to pay their respects. There is sense

:12:56. > :13:03.of solemnity and reflection. People are gathering to be together,

:13:04. > :13:06.clearly, slightly concerned and very sort of emotional about the

:13:07. > :13:15.weekend's events. All right, thank you very much for that.

:13:16. > :13:24.Why we'd been on air, the police have named two of the attackers, one

:13:25. > :13:35.of them Khuram Butt. One of Butt's neighbours has reported how he saw

:13:36. > :13:36.the attackers driving around in the van used on the day before the

:13:37. > :13:49.attack. Khuram Butt worked on the London

:13:50. > :13:52.Underground before turning to Islamic extremism. Police surrounded

:13:53. > :14:01.his home. Yet, he was well-known and well liked. This woman is a

:14:02. > :14:12.neighbour. He was buying sweets for the kids. He would always share with

:14:13. > :14:18.the neighbours. Scary. We have got children and they are always playing

:14:19. > :14:23.here. Benjamin would say hello to his neighbour, even on the day of

:14:24. > :14:33.the attack. I saw him. What was he like? Quiet. What was he wearing?

:14:34. > :14:39.And Arsenal T-shirt. Was he calm when you saw him on Saturday? Yes,

:14:40. > :14:45.he was calm, calm. He was parked in the middle-of-the-road. Moving out

:14:46. > :14:52.because Michael watched the attacker in a white van with another man,

:14:53. > :14:58.speeding at 6:30pm on Saturday. What was the van doing? It screeched up.

:14:59. > :15:10.There was another car, a red car, right behind. Speeding up and

:15:11. > :15:17.breaking? Just breaking in the van. -- braking. This teenager new Khuram

:15:18. > :15:19.Butt. They would talk in parks, in a nearby mosque. He didn't want to

:15:20. > :15:27.show his face and asked us to protect his identity. He would talk

:15:28. > :15:30.about Syria, mostly Afghanistan, how they get bombed and how most people

:15:31. > :15:36.don't have food or homes to live in. He said the pair would debate Syria,

:15:37. > :15:42.Iraq and Islamic State. Whist jihad important to him? It was really

:15:43. > :15:54.important to him. -- was jihad important to an? Khuram Butt -

:15:55. > :15:58.responsible for seven innocent deaths, and today, more raids and

:15:59. > :16:01.searches to get to the truth of those behind the London attacks. Let

:16:02. > :16:06.Thomas, BBC News, barking. There's just three days to go

:16:07. > :16:08.before the election, and the terror attack has sparked

:16:09. > :16:11.off heated arguments The Prime Minister has been

:16:12. > :16:13.defending her record That's after the Labour Leader

:16:14. > :16:17.backed calls for Theresa May to resign for cuts to the number

:16:18. > :16:19.of police officers while But Theresa May said

:16:20. > :16:23.the Metropolitan Police was well resourced and accused Jeremy Corbyn

:16:24. > :16:25.of failing to support measures Laura Kuenssberg now reports

:16:26. > :16:35.on the political reaction. Raising the stakes,

:16:36. > :16:37.but is she raising her game? Theresa May calls for a new attitude

:16:38. > :16:48.in a new era of terrorist threats. She hopes leadership is her

:16:49. > :16:50.strength, but experience haunts her. Because of the nature

:16:51. > :16:53.of the threat we face, we need to review our counterterrorism

:16:54. > :16:55.strategy to make sure the police and security services have

:16:56. > :16:57.all the powers they need. If that means increasing the length

:16:58. > :17:02.of custodial sentences for terrorism related offences,

:17:03. > :17:04.even apparently less serious They may be uncomfortable

:17:05. > :17:10.for some to contemplate, but nothing is more important

:17:11. > :17:16.than keeping our country safe. She's promised tighter rules

:17:17. > :17:18.for Internet providers, But again and again, she was pressed

:17:19. > :17:27.on falling police budgets, On your watch as Home Secretary,

:17:28. > :17:32.the number of armed police officers fell, still it is lower

:17:33. > :17:34.than in 2010. The number of officers

:17:35. > :17:36.fell in total by 20,000, And control orders that monitor

:17:37. > :17:40.terrorists were watered down. Would it not be leadership to say

:17:41. > :17:46.that you would reverse those cuts? We have enhanced

:17:47. > :17:51.the powers for the police. We have assured that security

:17:52. > :17:53.and intelligence agencies have the powers that they need,

:17:54. > :17:57.but it's not just about the resource, it's about

:17:58. > :18:05.the powers people have. The Independent Former

:18:06. > :18:06.Terror Watchdog agreed. Do you think that police cuts

:18:07. > :18:10.and a squeeze on the Home Office This is a completely

:18:11. > :18:23.misleading argument and the Prime Minister

:18:24. > :18:25.is right about it. Cut in committee policing

:18:26. > :18:27.are a legitimate issue They are nothing

:18:28. > :18:30.to do with terrorism. Plenty disagree, and for Labour,

:18:31. > :18:32.attacking the police cuts is the best form

:18:33. > :18:34.of political defence. We are not going to allow

:18:35. > :18:37.anybody to dictate how we live our lives, or how we go

:18:38. > :18:39.about enjoying ourselves. Jeremy Corbyn's application

:18:40. > :18:41.for the biggest job in the land is to restore

:18:42. > :18:43.cuts to public services. Would you take me on as an

:18:44. > :18:50.apprentice in your company? I would have to see your grades

:18:51. > :18:52.first... Having seemed to call

:18:53. > :18:54.for Theresa May to resign before clarifying, Jeremy Corbyn says

:18:55. > :18:56.he would consider any request pompous acuity

:18:57. > :18:57.services for more power. One is more police,

:18:58. > :18:59.that is essential. Secondly, more intelligence

:19:00. > :19:01.on the operations that are necessary to prevent

:19:02. > :19:05.a terror attack taking place. And also, the Home Office should

:19:06. > :19:17.release its report on funding of terrorist organisations,

:19:18. > :19:19.which it's been sitting on and not Despite the usual energetic

:19:20. > :19:23.photocalls come the weekend attacks There must be a determination

:19:24. > :19:27.across all of the parties to challenge robustly

:19:28. > :19:29.extremism in all of its forms. But as we do that,

:19:30. > :19:32.we have got to make sure In coalition, the Lib Dems

:19:33. > :19:41.were reluctant to tighten Theresa May has made a choice

:19:42. > :19:45.to give away corporation tax cuts to very wealthy corporations,

:19:46. > :19:47.and at the same time, With the choice days away,

:19:48. > :19:51.the discussions are nearly done, but the closing phase of

:19:52. > :19:53.this campaign is a fundamentally different shape to when it

:19:54. > :19:55.all began, and the question on the table now,

:19:56. > :20:03.the most basic of all. Who will you trust to

:20:04. > :20:05.keep the country safe? The Tories hope the Prime

:20:06. > :20:07.Minister's experience will land her back in power.

:20:08. > :20:10.Her record could trip her up, too. Laura Kuenssberg,

:20:11. > :20:17.BBC News, Westminster. As we've heard, there's been claim

:20:18. > :20:20.and counterclaim from politicians on the campaign trail today

:20:21. > :20:23.about police and security. So, what do those on the front

:20:24. > :20:26.line feel they need - Our correspondent Gordon Corera has

:20:27. > :20:31.been looking at the arguments around the security response

:20:32. > :20:42.to the terror threat. The aftermath of the third attack in

:20:43. > :20:46.three months, with questions about what can be done to stop more.

:20:47. > :20:52.Today, the political row was all about police numbers. The total

:20:53. > :21:00.number of police in England and Wales did fall 13% from 2009 to

:21:01. > :21:04.2016. The number of firearms officers fell by a thousand in the

:21:05. > :21:09.same period. But last year, more money was announced to bring it back

:21:10. > :21:13.to its peak of 7000. Firearms officers are important in responding

:21:14. > :21:19.to an attack, but stopping them in the first place may require a

:21:20. > :21:23.different debate. Police and MI5 say they are dealing with a threat that

:21:24. > :21:29.is different to what has been seen before in scale and nature. At the

:21:30. > :21:33.moment, there are 500 live counterterrorist investigations.

:21:34. > :21:39.These involve 3000 people suspected of involvement in terrorism. But

:21:40. > :21:42.crucially, there are another 20,000 people who have previously been

:21:43. > :21:45.subjects of interest. And recently, it has been those people that have

:21:46. > :21:50.turned to violence, sometimes with little warning. A major challenge

:21:51. > :21:53.for police and MI5 is spotting if any of these individuals suddenly

:21:54. > :21:59.move towards planning an attack. So does a new threat require a new

:22:00. > :22:05.approach? It may require more resources in some areas. It takes

:22:06. > :22:08.dozens of trained specialists surveillance officers to follow

:22:09. > :22:11.someone around the clock. But it also might require new ways of

:22:12. > :22:17.working with securities this is needing to go back over old cases to

:22:18. > :22:20.more systematically review if an individual's threat profile has
