:00:18. > :00:20.treating it as a terror attack. A number of people have been killed

:00:21. > :00:23.and several injured - People ran in panic,

:00:24. > :00:26.there are reports of gunfire in the area and two gunmen

:00:27. > :00:28.entering a restaurant. We're still getting information

:00:29. > :00:30.on this and we'll bring A level results are out -

:00:31. > :00:37.the number of top grades goes up for the first time in six years

:00:38. > :00:43.and now boys come out on top The cyclist accused of killing

:00:44. > :00:46.a woman when he crashed into her - a court hears he had

:00:47. > :00:50.no front brakes. The school in the shadow

:00:51. > :00:53.of a disaster - we speak to the head teacher who lost four pupils

:00:54. > :01:03.in the Grenfell Tower fire. They supported each

:01:04. > :01:05.other through it. So you should assume

:01:06. > :01:07.the best about children and in a challenge like this,

:01:08. > :01:10.we saw they could rise to it. What difference does

:01:11. > :01:12.the colour of a ball make? England's first day-night Test match

:01:13. > :01:17.- they take on the West Indies. And coming up in

:01:18. > :01:19.Sportsday on BBC News: England's women have

:01:20. > :01:21.booked their place in the semi finals of the rugby World Cup

:01:22. > :01:24.with a comprehensive 47-26 victory Good evening and welcome

:01:25. > :01:49.to the BBC News at Six. Police in Barcelona,

:01:50. > :01:52.Spain's second largest city, have confirmed that they are dealing

:01:53. > :01:56.with a terror attack. About two hours ago a van was driven

:01:57. > :01:59.on to the pavement in a popular Police have confirmed

:02:00. > :02:04.there are a number of fatalities Around the same time two gunmen

:02:05. > :02:20.are reported to have barricaded The fan attack happened in an area

:02:21. > :02:27.popular with tourists known as Las Ramblas. Police have shut down Metro

:02:28. > :02:31.and trains stations. This report contains distressing images.

:02:32. > :02:40.Terror on the streets of one of Spain's busiest cities. A white van,

:02:41. > :02:43.now motionless, but earlier, according to witnesses, was driven

:02:44. > :02:59.into crowds of people, leaving dozens injured. Lawyer and

:03:00. > :03:04.University of Glasgow witness, Aamer Anwar was there. Five or six people

:03:05. > :03:10.were seriously injured. The emergency services were on the scene

:03:11. > :03:14.with machine guns and guns and people were very jittery and we were

:03:15. > :03:20.pushed back again. We keep getting pushed back and the police are

:03:21. > :03:24.absolutely everywhere. On a sunny afternoon, Las Ramblas would have

:03:25. > :03:28.been packed with people. This is where tourists flock to, where

:03:29. > :03:35.families would have been enjoying a day out. The pictures in the

:03:36. > :03:41.aftermath are all too familiar, reminiscent of recent terrorist

:03:42. > :03:46.attacks in other cities. People running in terror and people being

:03:47. > :03:51.tended to on the streets. The police were telling everybody just to run

:03:52. > :03:57.and there was a loud crashing noise, but I did not stop to look back.

:03:58. > :04:02.There was an immediate stampede in every direction down the narrow

:04:03. > :04:07.streets by Las Ramblas. What is not yet clear is where the attacker or

:04:08. > :04:11.the attackers might be. Catalan police are searching for the driver

:04:12. > :04:14.of the van, who witnesses say fled on foot. The Metro and train

:04:15. > :04:21.stations in the area have been closed. This evening, the centre of

:04:22. > :04:22.Barcelona remains cordoned off, and the city and its people under

:04:23. > :04:27.attack. Sarah Campbell, BBC News. Our security correspondent

:04:28. > :04:36.Gordon Corera is here. We are getting confirmation the

:04:37. > :04:41.authorities are treating this as a terror attack, so what are the

:04:42. > :04:44.priorities now for the police? From very early on it looked like a

:04:45. > :04:49.terrorist incident because of where it took place. Las Ramblas is a

:04:50. > :04:54.densely populated tourist area where tourists congregate in Barcelona. It

:04:55. > :04:59.was likely to be the kind of place where attackers might target,

:05:00. > :05:03.especially with a vehicle like this. Quickly the police sealed off the

:05:04. > :05:09.area. The priority then and now is to identify the perpetrator and find

:05:10. > :05:12.them. It does appear from witnesses, the individual driving the van

:05:13. > :05:17.mounted the pavement that went into people, fled on foot. There were

:05:18. > :05:20.some reports they had gone into a bar and will holed up there, but

:05:21. > :05:25.that hasn't been confirmed. Lisa played down the suggestion there was

:05:26. > :05:29.gunfire, but a manhunt is under way and some said there might be a

:05:30. > :05:33.second suspect that large. And that, as well as treating the injured will

:05:34. > :05:40.be the priority for the police in terms of making sure the threat

:05:41. > :05:44.isn't ongoing. We don't want to get ahead of ourselves, but there is a

:05:45. > :05:47.pattern here, the use of vehicles to attack people? We have seen it in

:05:48. > :05:53.the last couple of years being something used by people who can see

:05:54. > :05:58.the potential impact of what this, what people call, low-tech

:05:59. > :06:03.terrorism. It was used in Nice, in Berlin at a Christmas market and in

:06:04. > :06:08.the UK, London Bridge, Westminster Bridge, Finsbury Park and in two of

:06:09. > :06:11.those attacks, London Bridge and Westminster Bridge, he had

:06:12. > :06:14.individuals continuing an attack with knives and that is why the

:06:15. > :06:21.authorities will be prioritising this issue of finding the attacker

:06:22. > :06:24.as fast as they can. OK, there is actually a press conference going on

:06:25. > :06:29.now in Barcelona. We can see the pictures. We will bring you the

:06:30. > :06:34.latest and we will have the team listening to what is being said and

:06:35. > :06:38.bring Gordon back if necessary to check on those latest developments.

:06:39. > :06:41.As I say, that is happening right now in Barcelona. The rest of the

:06:42. > :06:43.news now... Hundreds of thousands

:06:44. > :06:45.of teenagers in England, Wales and Northern Ireland now

:06:46. > :06:47.have their A level grades. This year's overall results show

:06:48. > :06:50.a slight increase in top grades And after trailing the girls for 17

:06:51. > :06:55.years boys have now pulled ahead. In England - this was the first year

:06:56. > :06:57.students were taking new-style Their results were based purely

:06:58. > :07:01.on the exam, with no Here's our Education Editor Branwen

:07:02. > :07:19.Jeffreys with all the detail. I am at Hull University in the city

:07:20. > :07:24.of culture. Today has seen the beginning of a series of massive

:07:25. > :07:28.changes to the exam systems. Changes which will ultimately alter every

:07:29. > :07:34.A-level and every GCSE. But of course, today is also a story of

:07:35. > :07:38.individual families and their children. We have been hearing from

:07:39. > :07:38.young people about their experiences.

:07:39. > :07:41.So, I'm on the way to a level results now and I'm

:07:42. > :07:45.Yeah, I'm starting to feel nervous, I'm not going to lie.

:07:46. > :07:50.It's all going to be over in literally like ten

:07:51. > :07:55.For Sarah, Alex and George, a day of reckoning.

:07:56. > :08:02.Two years of hard work, results riding on one set of exams.

:08:03. > :08:07.So how do they feel about the new A-levels,

:08:08. > :08:12.where AS exams no longer count in some subjects?

:08:13. > :08:15.I personally found it really stressful.

:08:16. > :08:19.The idea that everything all of a sudden is at the end of two

:08:20. > :08:21.years is very intimidating, I think, for many of us.

:08:22. > :08:24.It really is like you've got to remember things from two years

:08:25. > :08:27.ago, and you sit there in the exam room going, "Is this right?"

:08:28. > :08:29.You still doubt yourself a little bit.

:08:30. > :08:32.Just the old system, you did bad in the AS results

:08:33. > :08:35.and you have to reset that, but this gives you a chance to

:08:36. > :08:45.Despite the stress, exam results have held up,

:08:46. > :08:49.And for boys, the best top grades for decades,

:08:50. > :08:52.getting more A and A stars than the girls.

:08:53. > :08:58.All their hopes and fears compressed into a few hours

:08:59. > :09:02.and a piece of paper, and in England this year the stakes

:09:03. > :09:05.have felt particularly high with students road testing

:09:06. > :09:14.With more new style A-levels next year, head teachers say

:09:15. > :09:23.We know what we want from our students but we haven't had a map,

:09:24. > :09:26.we haven't had directions, and when we have had these, they've

:09:27. > :09:29.been wrong or incorrect, so we have had to muddle

:09:30. > :09:31.through that and use our experience to get to the destination now.

:09:32. > :09:34.That's an incredibly stressful situation.

:09:35. > :09:39.For those who missed out on grades, places are still on offer at Hull

:09:40. > :09:43.Hello, this is the University of Hull clearing centre.

:09:44. > :09:46.Thousands will still get to uni through clearing.

:09:47. > :09:48.Tuition fees, now more than 9,000 a year.

:09:49. > :09:50.No sign yet it's putting young people off.

:09:51. > :09:57.But at the top of universities, they know the debate has shifted.

:09:58. > :10:00.It has opened up, and I think the key issue for universities

:10:01. > :10:04.is that the funding we have for higher education

:10:05. > :10:08.must have the confidence and trust of young people.

:10:09. > :10:11.It's important that young people are not deterred

:10:12. > :10:18.This campus will be full come October.

:10:19. > :10:21.Students focused on their future, not on a debt most

:10:22. > :10:38.University isn't for everyone, but overall, George, the evidence is

:10:39. > :10:43.still clear. If you get a degree you will learn more throughout your

:10:44. > :10:48.lifetime. The economics haven't shifted, what has? The politics are

:10:49. > :10:51.around tuition fees were altered by the general election and we can

:10:52. > :10:55.expect this debate to heat up, not cool down, over the next year.

:10:56. > :10:58.And one of the most high profile students who got their results today

:10:59. > :11:00.was Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai.

:11:01. > :11:03.Pictured here getting her grades this morning, the 20-year-old has

:11:04. > :11:06.gained a place at Oxford University to study philosophy,

:11:07. > :11:12.Malala was campaigning on girls' rights to education in her native

:11:13. > :11:23.Pakistan in 2012 when she was almost killed by the Taliban.

:11:24. > :11:33.We want to go back to the terror attack in Barcelona. The latest is a

:11:34. > :11:38.Barcelona City Council says he can confirm at least one person is dead

:11:39. > :11:44.and 32 people are injured, in the van attack when it drove onto the

:11:45. > :11:49.pavement in an area popular with tourists in Barcelona, the country's

:11:50. > :11:53.second largest city. We will bring you more of course, when we have it.

:11:54. > :11:56.A jury at the Old Bailey has heard that a cyclist who's accused

:11:57. > :11:59.of killing a mother of two when he crashed into her was riding

:12:00. > :12:02.Charlie Alliston hit Kim Briggs in east London

:12:03. > :12:05.He denies manslaughter and another charge.

:12:06. > :12:09.Kim Briggs was killed when crossing the road in her lunch break.

:12:10. > :12:12.She was knocked down by a man on his bicycle.

:12:13. > :12:18.In what's thought to be illegal first, the cyclist,

:12:19. > :12:20.In what's thought to be a legal first, the cyclist,

:12:21. > :12:22.Charlie Alliston, is charged with manslaughter.

:12:23. > :12:25.Moments before the crash, he was travelling at

:12:26. > :12:30.In the final metres, he slowed to between ten

:12:31. > :12:34.Charlie Alliston told the court he shouted out to Kim Briggs

:12:35. > :12:37.to warn her before he reached this yellow crisscross area on the road.

:12:38. > :12:39.A few metres later, he shouted again.

:12:40. > :12:43.He then said he swerved to the left to try and pass her on the inside.

:12:44. > :12:45.Kim Briggs was already out in the road.

:12:46. > :12:47.He told the court that at the last moment, she stepped

:12:48. > :13:00.Illegal on the road and according to the prosecution, why

:13:01. > :13:03.But in court today, Mr Alliston claimed he couldn't

:13:04. > :13:05.have avoided Mrs Briggs, even with a front brake.

:13:06. > :13:09.Comments written by Mr Alliston online in the hours and days

:13:10. > :13:11.following the crash have been read out in court.

:13:12. > :13:19.On the evening of the crash he wrote...

:13:20. > :13:23.The charge of manslaughter is unusual in the case of a cyclist.

:13:24. > :13:26.Mr Alliston denies that charge and a separate charge brought under

:13:27. > :13:29.a very old law of intent to cause bodily harm by wonton

:13:30. > :13:36.Tom Burridge, BBC News at the Old Bailey.

:13:37. > :13:39.In the heat of the row about President Trump's response

:13:40. > :13:42.to last weekend's violence in Virginia we might have

:13:43. > :13:45.forgotten that it all started with an argument over a statue.

:13:46. > :13:48.Far right nationalists are against proposals to remove

:13:49. > :13:50.symbols celebrating those who fought to defend slavery in

:13:51. > :13:55.Now, in more comments that might prove controversial,

:13:56. > :13:59.President Trump says removing the statues is tantamount to ripping

:14:00. > :14:07.Here's our North America Correspondent Nick Bryant.

:14:08. > :14:09.Wall Street, not just the spiritual home of US commerce,

:14:10. > :14:11.but where America inaugurated its first president,

:14:12. > :14:16.He is regarded as a national hero, the general who

:14:17. > :14:23.But he was also a slave owner and Donald Trump suggested today

:14:24. > :14:26.these kinds of statues could be in jeopardy if monument

:14:27. > :14:34.celebrating the Confederacy, which fought during the civil war

:14:35. > :14:38.Sad to see the history and culture of our great

:14:39. > :14:40.country being ripped apart, he wrote on Twitter.

:14:41. > :14:42.With the removal of beautiful statues and monuments.

:14:43. > :14:45.You cannot change history, but you can learn from it.

:14:46. > :14:56.The debate has been reignited by these torch carrying,

:14:57. > :15:07.They gathered around a statue of the Confederate General Robert E Lee

:15:08. > :15:09.in Charlottesville last week to protest the city's

:15:10. > :15:17.Donald Trump was slow to single them out for criticism and then said

:15:18. > :15:20.there was some very fine people on both sides, during last

:15:21. > :15:25.Anti-racist protesters in North Carolina this week,

:15:26. > :15:28.pulled down the monument to Confederate soldiers.

:15:29. > :15:30.Other cities like Baltimore have decided to remove statues

:15:31. > :15:36.There are more than 700 Confederate monuments,

:15:37. > :15:37.symbols of hate to many African-Americans, symbols

:15:38. > :15:46.But does it distort that debate, to liken Confederate generals such

:15:47. > :15:51.as Robert E Lee with more unifying figures like George Washington?

:15:52. > :15:54.People who have tried, including the president,

:15:55. > :15:58.people who have tried to suggest an equation between Thomas Jefferson

:15:59. > :16:01.and George Washington on the one hand and Robert E Lee

:16:02. > :16:04.and Stonewall Jackson on the other, are people who are either ignorant

:16:05. > :16:08.of history or willing to distort it in an incredibly cynical way.

:16:09. > :16:10.In Charlottesville last night, the light came

:16:11. > :16:15.There is still anger here that Donald Trump says

:16:16. > :16:21.both sides were to blame for the weekend's violence.

:16:22. > :16:28.This has been a moment of soul-searching in America, but that

:16:29. > :16:32.process hasn't been led by the president, as would ordinarily be

:16:33. > :16:36.the case. Quite the opposite. Donald Trump is the prime cause of this

:16:37. > :16:39.national reckoning. It is his presidential stature but is also in

:16:40. > :16:56.question. At least one person has died and 32

:16:57. > :17:01.others injured after a van drove into pedestrians on one of

:17:02. > :17:08.Barcelona's busiest streets. Police are treating the incident as a

:17:09. > :17:09.terrorist attack. I will have news of the pink ball experiment in Test

:17:10. > :17:13.cricket. Double Olympic medallist and former

:17:14. > :17:17.World Champion Becky James has announced her retirement

:17:18. > :17:20.from cycling at the age of just 25. She now intends to set

:17:21. > :17:28.up a baking business. Pupils at the Kensington

:17:29. > :17:29.Aldridge Academy, the school which sits in the shadow

:17:30. > :17:32.of the Grenfell Tower, received Four students and one former

:17:33. > :17:38.pupil died in the fire. Others lost their homes

:17:39. > :17:40.as they were preparing The headteacher of the school,

:17:41. > :17:43.David Benson, has been telling our education correspondent,

:17:44. > :17:45.Gillian Hargreaves, about how proud Their school lies at the foot

:17:46. > :17:55.of the burned out tower. They haven't been able to use

:17:56. > :17:57.it for three months. 50 pupils had to flee their homes,

:17:58. > :17:59.five children died. This is the first time

:18:00. > :18:01.the headteacher has spoken It was very, very difficult

:18:02. > :18:07.and very, very challenging. There was the emotion

:18:08. > :18:09.of the situation and the deep for members of our school community,

:18:10. > :18:13.but there was also a whole load You know, children have one chance

:18:14. > :18:19.in life at an education. Today, at least, there

:18:20. > :18:29.were results to celebrate at their temporary school mile

:18:30. > :18:33.away from the tower. I think that the fact

:18:34. > :18:36.that we can walk in here and get our results

:18:37. > :18:37.and have smiles on our faces,

:18:38. > :18:41.I think it's part of remembering, and it's part of celebrating

:18:42. > :18:43.the people who lived in Grenfell. Our strength brings strength

:18:44. > :18:50.to the community, and strength in the community I think

:18:51. > :18:53.is everything we can hope for. We're sticking together,

:18:54. > :18:55.rather than getting angry. We are still trying to,

:18:56. > :19:02.like, obviously move on, but we will never move

:19:03. > :19:05.on from what happened. And although we don't

:19:06. > :19:06.want to mention it, Although barely touched by the fire,

:19:07. > :19:11.the school remains shut until next Easter, as it's

:19:12. > :19:16.within the police cordon. To lose five pupils,

:19:17. > :19:20.four all at once, two in one year group, that is immense

:19:21. > :19:25.for a school to ensure. I'm incredibly proud of my staff

:19:26. > :19:37.and what they've done. What I saw after Grenfell

:19:38. > :19:52.was incredible because, you know, they had the bravery and the courage

:19:53. > :19:55.to come back in, feeling very confused and uneasy

:19:56. > :19:56.about what had happened. And they had the maturity to listen

:19:57. > :20:00.to us about what we were saying was important, and then

:20:01. > :20:01.they supported each So, you know, you should assume

:20:02. > :20:05.the best about children and in a challenge like this we saw

:20:06. > :20:10.that they could rise to it. After all of that, today's

:20:11. > :20:13.a good day for you. Mm, today is a really

:20:14. > :20:18.good day for us. The headteacher of the

:20:19. > :20:20.Kensington Aldridge Academy, David Benson, speaking

:20:21. > :20:21.to our Education Correspondent A massive fire at a fruit

:20:22. > :20:32.market in Glasgow has been Firefighters were called

:20:33. > :20:35.to the Blochairn Fruit Market in the north east of the city

:20:36. > :20:38.in the early hours of the morning. and there were no reports

:20:39. > :20:45.of injuries. The education watchdog Ofsted has

:20:46. > :20:47.published a damning report into Learndirect Limited -

:20:48. > :20:49.the UK's largest adult training Ofsted rated the company,

:20:50. > :20:52.which has received hundreds of millions of pounds of public

:20:53. > :20:56.money, as inadequate. Now the Department for Education has

:20:57. > :20:58.said it will withdraw On its website, Learndirect Limited

:20:59. > :21:09.promises to kick-start careers and inspire potential,

:21:10. > :21:11.but some on apprentice schemes and learning programmes have

:21:12. > :21:18.complained on social media. "A huge waste of time",

:21:19. > :21:21."undertrained", "no And now Ofsted has rated

:21:22. > :21:28.the company inadequate. Some of the findings in today's

:21:29. > :21:30.report raise concerns about the standards of teaching

:21:31. > :21:33.and not enough people Ofsted found multiple evidence of no

:21:34. > :21:41.new skills being delivered. Around a third of apprentices

:21:42. > :21:45.were not receiving the required training they would expect,

:21:46. > :21:47.which is therefore not a great surprise that many

:21:48. > :21:50.were failing their courses. Learndirect Limited was given

:21:51. > :21:52.the lowest possible grade Back in the spring, the company came

:21:53. > :21:59.here to the High Court to try and block the publication of this

:22:00. > :22:03.critical Ofsted report. They argued the publication

:22:04. > :22:06.could lead to a catastrophic withdrawal of funding,

:22:07. > :22:08.but the people who wanted the report We have an extensive library

:22:09. > :22:16.of courses and qualifications... The Government has now announced

:22:17. > :22:18.the contract with Learndirect will be wound down gradually,

:22:19. > :22:20.ending in July next year It's very clear that the senior

:22:21. > :22:27.leaders and directors just haven't really paid the attention they need

:22:28. > :22:30.to the quality. Because quality doesn't

:22:31. > :22:32.just happen by chance. You have to work at it all the time,

:22:33. > :22:35.and unfortunately it's the learners and apprentices

:22:36. > :22:39.who will be losing out. In a statement, Learndirect Limited

:22:40. > :22:41.said they were continuously improving services and outcomes

:22:42. > :22:46.for learners, and went on to say the process behind Ofsted's report

:22:47. > :22:49.did not provide an accurate reflection of the current quality

:22:50. > :22:51.of Learndirect Limited's training, due to the unrepresentative sample

:22:52. > :23:01.size and use of legacy data. Around 73,000 people

:23:02. > :23:04.are in Learndirect training or on a qualification course,

:23:05. > :23:06.and there have been But after today's damning reports,

:23:07. > :23:12.the provider will now be hoping England are taking on the West

:23:13. > :23:24.Indies in the first day/night And all eyes are on the pink ball,

:23:25. > :23:29.which is being used for the first time in a Test match

:23:30. > :23:31.in this country. England went into bat first

:23:32. > :23:33.and there were half centuries Our sports correspondent

:23:34. > :23:41.Joe Wilson reports. If you came to Birmingham this week

:23:42. > :23:47.coming new about the cricket. I shoot towards the ground

:23:48. > :23:53.in afternoon sun, spectators were not expecting

:23:54. > :23:54.to leave until 9:00pm. I think we'd be coming anyway,

:23:55. > :23:57.but it's exciting to be We are more excited

:23:58. > :24:02.than we would have been. You are in lovely green shorts,

:24:03. > :24:04.short sleeves, also a rucksack, is there another couple

:24:05. > :24:06.of layers in there? Some waterproofs, some layers,

:24:07. > :24:09.along with the provisions, yeah. The pink ball novelty may have

:24:10. > :24:14.attracted some extra fans. Must remember though,

:24:15. > :24:16.this is a Test match. So the first pink ball delivery

:24:17. > :24:20.was met with about the most familiar Cook had yet another

:24:21. > :24:29.new opening partner, Mark Stoneman on debut,

:24:30. > :24:30.lasted six balls. But Cook seemed to be seeing

:24:31. > :24:45.it as clearly as ever. His first Test 50 with

:24:46. > :24:49.a pink ball, 56 in total. And there was Joe Root,

:24:50. > :24:51.batting serenely. It could be that the ball wasn't

:24:52. > :24:57.helping the bowlers, it could be that the bowlers

:24:58. > :25:01.weren't especially good. And it could be that England had

:25:02. > :25:03.two exceptional Test Well, if entertainment

:25:04. > :25:08.is what the masses want, it's what this Test match

:25:09. > :25:13.is supposed to give. And from an England perspective,

:25:14. > :25:16.especially if you are the captain, a pink ball looks pretty good

:25:17. > :25:36.on its way to the boundary. Let's remember the whole point about

:25:37. > :25:41.the pink ball as it is visible under floodlights and they will be turned

:25:42. > :25:44.on soon. Play Test matches at a time when people can come and watch,

:25:45. > :25:48.that's the whole point but the feel of the game might be about to change

:25:49. > :25:50.in the next few hours because the Twilight zone is the time the

:25:51. > :26:04.batsmen tend to fear. It has been another day of sunshine

:26:05. > :26:06.and showers today. The showers have been frequent across Northern

:26:07. > :26:10.Ireland and Scotland and during the afternoon bubbling up across

:26:11. > :26:15.south-west England too. But there's been more sunshine to go around as

:26:16. > :26:21.well, and in that sunshine it felt warmer. But when the heavy downpours

:26:22. > :26:24.came down, some of them were heavy as well. Overnight tonight there

:26:25. > :26:28.will be further showers coming and going but more particularly across

:26:29. > :26:31.Northern Ireland, Scotland and England were some of those showers

:26:32. > :26:36.have been heavy, there's even a chance of rumbles of thunder during

:26:37. > :26:40.the night. It will be cooler for north-western parts of the UK and

:26:41. > :26:47.that takes us into Friday. Another day of sunshine and showers but with

:26:48. > :26:51.a difference. The showers will clump together, and it will be a blustery

:26:52. > :26:58.day everywhere. A swathe of fairly strong winds going across Northern

:26:59. > :27:02.Ireland, potentially reaching 50 mph around coastal fringes. Enough to

:27:03. > :27:06.bring down some tree branches so we could see localised disruption from

:27:07. > :27:14.that. They will also be knocking the temperatures down, highs up to 21.

:27:15. > :27:19.Still feeling OK in the sunshine on Saturday but the bluster is winds

:27:20. > :27:23.still with us in the north-west. You have a better chance of dodging the

:27:24. > :27:27.downpours and staying dry. That's the first half of the weekend but

:27:28. > :27:35.for the second half we have to look out in the Atlantic, where hurricane

:27:36. > :27:39.Gert will combine with an area of low pressure. This area of tropical

:27:40. > :27:41.moisture will bring heavy rain to the western side of the UK as we go

:27:42. > :27:46.into Sunday. Back now to our main story,

:27:47. > :27:53.the van attack in Barcelona. Well we have been on air,

:27:54. > :27:58.authorities have confirmed one person is dead and 32 have been

:27:59. > :28:00.injured, ten of them seriously. Police say they are treating the

:28:01. > :28:10.incident as a terror attack. This wasn't just a city centre area,

:28:11. > :28:18.it is popular with tourists? That's right, it is one of the most famous

:28:19. > :28:21.streets in Barcelona, Las Ramblas, and that's why the suspicion was

:28:22. > :28:26.this was a terrorist attack, something the police have now

:28:27. > :28:30.confirmed. It fits into a pattern of other terror attacks we have seen in

:28:31. > :28:38.the past, for example using vehicles in Nice on Bastille Day, and in

:28:39. > :28:41.Germany at the Christmas market using a lorry so it fits into that

:28:42. > :28:46.pattern. The Foreign Office have said they are in contact with the

:28:47. > :28:50.Spanish authorities and if there are any Britons there, they should

:28:51. > :28:55.follow the advice of the emergency services. As we have seen, a van

:28:56. > :29:00.driven into a crowd. It presents all sorts of challenges when you are

:29:01. > :29:03.talking about prevention. That's right, this low-tech attack is

:29:04. > :29:17.something the authorities have been struggling to prevent. We have seen

:29:18. > :29:19.it in the UK. It is harder to spot the preparations, it just

:29:20. > :29:22.potentially takes one person renting a van with the intent to do it. Some

:29:23. > :29:26.people have been talking here about the ability to restrict the renting

:29:27. > :29:29.of these vans. Thank you. There will be more on the BBC News channel.
