0:02:42 > 0:02:44Our first report tonight on the royal engagement,

0:02:44 > 0:02:45from our royal correspondent Nicholas Witchell.

0:02:45 > 0:02:49Finally it's official, they are engaged to be married.

0:02:49 > 0:02:54Prince Harry, fifth in line to the British throne,

0:02:54 > 0:02:58and Meghan Markle, an American, an actress, a divorcee.

0:02:58 > 0:03:00And, as she has put it herself, a woman who's proud

0:03:00 > 0:03:01of her mixed-race heritage.

0:03:01 > 0:03:03Her mother is an African-American.

0:03:03 > 0:03:06Seldom can a Royal wedding have indicated so clearly

0:03:06 > 0:03:09how times have changed.

0:03:09 > 0:03:12How are you both feeling?

0:03:12 > 0:03:15Thrilled.

0:03:15 > 0:03:19And we're very glad it's not raining as well.

0:03:19 > 0:03:22Harry was asked when he realised Meghan was the one.

0:03:22 > 0:03:24The very first time we met.

0:03:24 > 0:03:27Meghan, can you show us the ring, please?

0:03:27 > 0:03:31Ah yes, the ring.

0:03:31 > 0:03:33Designed, it turns out, by Harry, and including two diamonds

0:03:33 > 0:03:34owned by his late mother.

0:03:34 > 0:03:35Harry and Meghan.

0:03:35 > 0:03:40He 33, she 36.

0:03:40 > 0:03:45A happy couple who met 18 months ago and who are now starting to plan

0:03:45 > 0:03:47a wedding, which will take place next spring.

0:03:47 > 0:03:52Later, in an interview with the BBC's Mishal Husain,

0:03:52 > 0:03:54the couple talked about the moment, earlier this month,

0:03:54 > 0:03:55when Harry proposed.

0:03:55 > 0:03:56Just an amazing surprise.

0:03:56 > 0:03:59It was so sweet and natural, and very romantic.

0:03:59 > 0:04:01He got on one knee.

0:04:01 > 0:04:02Of course.

0:04:02 > 0:04:04Was it an instant yes from you?

0:04:04 > 0:04:08Yes, as a matter of fact I could barely let you finish proposing!

0:04:08 > 0:04:10I was like, can I say yes now?

0:04:10 > 0:04:11She didn't even let me finish.

0:04:11 > 0:04:14Then there was hugs and I had the ring in my finger.

0:04:14 > 0:04:16I said, "Can I give you the ring?"

0:04:16 > 0:04:18She said, "Oh yes, the ring!"

0:04:18 > 0:04:21So it was really nice moment, just the two of us and I think I managed

0:04:21 > 0:04:23to catch her by surprise as well.

0:04:23 > 0:04:24Yeah.

0:04:24 > 0:04:30And Harry spoke of the instant impact Meghan had had on him.

0:04:31 > 0:04:34The fact that I fell in love with Meghan so incredibly quickly

0:04:34 > 0:04:42was sort of confirmation to me that everything,

0:04:42 > 0:04:45all the stars are aligned, everything was perfect.

0:04:45 > 0:04:46This beautiful woman, just literally tripped

0:04:46 > 0:04:48and fell into my life.

0:04:48 > 0:04:51I fell into her life, and the fact that she...

0:04:51 > 0:04:54I know the fact that she will be really unbelievably good at the job

0:04:54 > 0:04:57part of it as well is obviously a huge relief to me

0:04:57 > 0:04:59because she will be able to deal with everything else

0:04:59 > 0:05:01that comes with it.

0:05:01 > 0:05:03Within the royal family, there is, as you'd expect,

0:05:03 > 0:05:05great happiness at the news.

0:05:05 > 0:05:07The Queen was delighted, as was Harry's father,

0:05:07 > 0:05:08the Prince of Wales.

0:05:08 > 0:05:11We're thrilled, thank you very much, for both of them.

0:05:11 > 0:05:14I hope they'll be very happy indeed, is all I can say.

0:05:14 > 0:05:16The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge tweeted their excitement

0:05:16 > 0:05:19for the couple, saying it had been wonderful to getting to know Meghan

0:05:19 > 0:05:24and to see how happy the couple were together.

0:05:24 > 0:05:28So now, next spring, there will be a double Royal celebration -

0:05:28 > 0:05:31another baby for William and Catherine, and a wedding

0:05:31 > 0:05:35in a so far unidentified church for Harry and his bride,

0:05:35 > 0:05:36Meghan Markle.

0:05:36 > 0:05:43Nicholas Witchell, BBC News.

0:05:43 > 0:05:53Prince Harry and Meghan Markle began dating last summer and just a year

0:05:53 > 0:05:56and a half on, news of their coming wedding has

0:05:56 > 0:05:57raced around the world.

0:05:57 > 0:05:59Earlier today they spoke publicly for the first time

0:05:59 > 0:06:01about their engagement in an interview, with my

0:06:01 > 0:06:02colleague Mishal Husain.

0:06:02 > 0:06:05How did you first meet?We were introduced by a mutual friend.We

0:06:05 > 0:06:11should protect her privacy and not too much of that.It was literally

0:06:11 > 0:06:17threw her and then we met once or twice back to dates in London last

0:06:17 > 0:06:25July.Yes.Beginning of July. And then it was three or four weeks

0:06:25 > 0:06:32later that I managed to persuade her to come and join me in Botswana and

0:06:32 > 0:06:37we camped out with each other under the stars and we spent five days out

0:06:37 > 0:06:43there which was fantastic. Then we were really by ourselves, which was

0:06:43 > 0:06:46crucial to me to make sure we had a chance to get to know each other.

0:06:46 > 0:06:50The friend to introduce juke was she trying to set you up?It was

0:06:50 > 0:06:57definitely a setup!-- the friend who introduced you.We talk about it

0:06:57 > 0:07:01now, because I'm from the States, we don't grow up with the same

0:07:01 > 0:07:06understanding of the Royal family and so while I understand now very

0:07:06 > 0:07:10clearly there is a global interest there, I didn't know much about him

0:07:10 > 0:07:14and so the only thing I asked her when she said she wanted to set us

0:07:14 > 0:07:19up, one question, was he nice? Because if he wasn't kind, it didn't

0:07:19 > 0:07:24seem to make sense. In the case of your relationship, unlike many

0:07:24 > 0:07:27people, there's a layer of what it means to get involved with someone

0:07:27 > 0:07:31the Royal family. How much of a sense did you have of the enormity

0:07:31 > 0:07:38of what you be getting into and what it would mean for your life?As

0:07:38 > 0:07:41naive as it sounds now, having gone through this learning curve over the

0:07:41 > 0:07:45last year and a half, I didn't have any understanding of what it would

0:07:45 > 0:07:52be like. I think we both said that. No, I tried to warn her as much as

0:07:52 > 0:07:58possible but I think both of us were totally surprised by the reaction

0:07:58 > 0:08:01after the first five or six months we had to ourselves of what happened

0:08:01 > 0:08:07from then. I think you can have as many conversations as you'd like and

0:08:07 > 0:08:10prepare as much as possible but we were totally unprepared for what

0:08:10 > 0:08:19happened.The scrutiny?Well, all sorts.And also, there's a

0:08:19 > 0:08:21misconception that because I've worked in the entertainment industry

0:08:21 > 0:08:24that this would be something I'd be familiar with but even though I've

0:08:24 > 0:08:29been on my show for six years at that point, and working before that,

0:08:29 > 0:08:35I've never been part of tabloid culture, pop culture to that degree

0:08:35 > 0:08:38and had lived a relatively quiet life even though I focused so much

0:08:38 > 0:08:45on my job. So that was a really stark difference out of the gate.

0:08:45 > 0:08:51And we were hit so hard with a lot of untruths that I made the choice

0:08:51 > 0:08:56not to read anything, positive or negative, instead we focus our

0:08:56 > 0:09:01energies on nurturing our relationship.On us.On us.Some of

0:09:01 > 0:09:05that scrutiny, you made a public statement about it, some of the

0:09:05 > 0:09:09scrutiny was centred around your ethnicity, I think. When you realise

0:09:09 > 0:09:14that, what did you think?Of course it's disheartening. It's a shame

0:09:14 > 0:09:19that that is the climate in this world, to focus that much which

0:09:19 > 0:09:26would be discriminatory in that sense but at the end of the day I'm

0:09:26 > 0:09:31really proud of where I am and where I come from. We have never put any

0:09:31 > 0:09:36focus on that, we've just focused on who we are as a couple. When you

0:09:36 > 0:09:39take those extra layers away, all of that noise, I think it makes it

0:09:39 > 0:09:45really easy to just enjoy being together and tune the rest of it

0:09:45 > 0:09:49out.What was it like introducing Meghan to your father and your

0:09:49 > 0:09:59brother?Erm... What was it like? Exciting. I've been saying it for a

0:09:59 > 0:10:03period of time I didn't tell anybody at all. And then William was longing

0:10:03 > 0:10:11to meet her and so was Catherine. We will be neighbours, we got that in a

0:10:11 > 0:10:17couple of times and Catherine has been absolutely amazing, as has

0:10:17 > 0:10:21William, fantastic support. My father as well, we had a handful of

0:10:21 > 0:10:29teas and meetings and all sorts of gatherings at his place as well. The

0:10:29 > 0:10:32family together have been absolutely solid support. And you met the

0:10:32 > 0:10:40Queen?Yes, I have a couple of times.What's that like?It's

0:10:40 > 0:10:45incredible. First, to be able to meet her, through his lens, not just

0:10:45 > 0:10:49with his honour and respect for her as the monarch but the love he has

0:10:49 > 0:10:55for her as his grandmother, those layers have been important for me so

0:10:55 > 0:10:59when I met her I had a deep understanding and of course

0:10:59 > 0:11:04incredible respect for having that time with her. We've had a really...

0:11:04 > 0:11:12She's an incredible woman. The last 33 years of being barked at, this

0:11:12 > 0:11:25one, walking in, the corgis.Tell us about the ring.It is yellow gold

0:11:25 > 0:11:32and the main stone is from Tswana and the diamonds either side are

0:11:32 > 0:11:40from my mother's jewellery collection. She's on this crazy

0:11:40 > 0:11:45journey together.It's beautiful and he designed it. It's incredible.

0:11:45 > 0:11:51Yeah. Make sure it stays on that finger.Of course! What does it mean

0:11:51 > 0:11:55to you, Meghan, to have those stones on your finger that once belonged to

0:11:55 > 0:12:01Princess Diana?I think everything about Harry's thoughtfulness and the

0:12:01 > 0:12:07inclusion of that and obviously not being able to meet his mum, it's so

0:12:07 > 0:12:11important for me to know that she's a part of this with us.What do you

0:12:11 > 0:12:17think your mother would have thought of Meghan and said about her? She'd

0:12:17 > 0:12:23say we are as thick as thieves! Without question, she'd be over the

0:12:23 > 0:12:29moon, jumping up and down, so excited for me. But then, we've been

0:12:29 > 0:12:34best friends. It is days like today when I really miss her being around

0:12:34 > 0:12:39and being able to show her the happy news but with the ring and

0:12:39 > 0:12:43everything else going on I'm sure she is with us and jumping up and

0:12:43 > 0:12:48down somewhere else.Rinse Harry, Meghan Markle, thank you both ferry

0:12:48 > 0:12:55much.Thank you so much -- Prince Harry.

0:12:55 > 0:12:57And there will be more from Mishal's interview with Prince Harry

0:12:57 > 0:13:01and Megan Markle on the One Show - that's on BBC One at 7:00pm.

0:13:01 > 0:13:02And on the BBC website at bbc.co.uk/news.

0:13:02 > 0:13:04So what do we know about the Meghan Markle?

0:13:04 > 0:13:07Well, she is 36, divorced and describes herself as a "strong,

0:13:07 > 0:13:08confident, mixed-raced woman".

0:13:08 > 0:13:11She grew up in Los Angeles and until she met Prince Harry

0:13:11 > 0:13:14was best known for playing Rachel Zane in the US

0:13:14 > 0:13:15TV drama Suits.

0:13:15 > 0:13:17She's also campaigned for gender equality and a variety

0:13:17 > 0:13:20of humanitarian causes.

0:13:20 > 0:13:22Our Royal correspondent Daniella Relph has been finding out

0:13:22 > 0:13:25more about Megan Markle, and speaking to her friends.

0:13:25 > 0:13:28Have you heard?

0:13:28 > 0:13:31There is breaking news out of London this morning.

0:13:31 > 0:13:33Drum roll, please.

0:13:33 > 0:13:34Prince Harry and American actress Meghan Markle

0:13:34 > 0:13:35are engaged - yay!

0:13:35 > 0:13:36Congratulations, Harry and Meghan.

0:13:36 > 0:13:40We don't know you, but congratulations!

0:13:40 > 0:13:42But we will all get to know Meghan Markle much better

0:13:42 > 0:13:44over the next few months.

0:13:44 > 0:13:49She is no ordinary royal fiancee.

0:13:49 > 0:13:52Her early acting career was made up of small

0:13:52 > 0:13:55television and film parts and adverts.

0:13:55 > 0:13:57There was also a stint opening the boxes

0:13:57 > 0:14:02on the TV programme Deal Or No Deal.

0:14:02 > 0:14:06It's Meghan Markle!

0:14:06 > 0:14:07Wow, you're pretty.

0:14:07 > 0:14:08Good, you've hit on me.

0:14:08 > 0:14:11We can get it out of the way that I am not interested.

0:14:11 > 0:14:12No, I'm sorry...

0:14:12 > 0:14:14Before her big break in the legal drama Suits.

0:14:14 > 0:14:17But she sometimes took issue with the way her character,

0:14:17 > 0:14:17Rachel Zane, was portrayed.

0:14:17 > 0:14:19This season, every script seemed to begin with

0:14:19 > 0:14:21"Rachel enters wearing a towel."

0:14:21 > 0:14:23And I said, "Nope, not doing it any more."

0:14:23 > 0:14:26Not doing it, and I called the creator and I was like,

0:14:26 > 0:14:28"It's just gratuitous."

0:14:28 > 0:14:30We get it, you've already seen it once,

0:14:30 > 0:14:32so I think that at a certain point,

0:14:32 > 0:14:37you feel empowered enough to just say no.

0:14:37 > 0:14:40Meghan Markle will bring something different

0:14:40 > 0:14:43to the British Royal family.

0:14:43 > 0:14:46Born and brought up here in United States, she is a

0:14:46 > 0:14:49proud American but she's also a campaigner with strong

0:14:49 > 0:14:51opinions and, if possible, she won't want her marriage

0:14:51 > 0:14:57to limit that side her life.

0:14:57 > 0:15:01Her humanitarian work has taken her around the world,

0:15:01 > 0:15:03here in Rwanda.

0:15:03 > 0:15:09She's focused on gender equality.

0:15:09 > 0:15:13Particularly as an advocate for United Nations women. It's really

0:15:13 > 0:15:21hands-on, being part of this. It feels really nice.I think her

0:15:21 > 0:15:23passion for other people and wanting to create social change is

0:15:23 > 0:15:29something, with that platform, can only be positive. I bet she'll be

0:15:29 > 0:15:36fine, she'll be great in fact! Meghan Markle grew up in this

0:15:36 > 0:15:41affluent neighbourhood of Los Angeles and went to a private

0:15:41 > 0:15:44Catholic school. She's mixed race, the daughter of divorced parents.

0:15:44 > 0:15:50Her mother, yoga teacher and her father, a TV and lighting director.

0:15:50 > 0:15:52In the early days of her relationship with Prince Harry some

0:15:52 > 0:15:56of the media coverage and settled them, Prince Harry releasing a

0:15:56 > 0:16:04statement suggesting coverage had racial undertones. It felt racist to

0:16:04 > 0:16:09me, like there was an attempt to make her seem like an outsider. So

0:16:09 > 0:16:14yeah that was pretty startling. This will be a whole new world for Meghan

0:16:14 > 0:16:24Markle. Swapping the small screen for a far bigger stage.

0:16:24 > 0:16:29And Daniela is with me here.

0:16:29 > 0:16:35Meghan is a very new proposition for the royal family.

0:16:35 > 0:16:41What impact do you think she will have on the Royal family? There is

0:16:41 > 0:16:45going to be that sort of American sensibility about her I think, that

0:16:45 > 0:16:50will mean she brings something different. She's not a traditional

0:16:50 > 0:16:54royal bride. Prince Harry has chosen someone who hasn't been drawn from

0:16:54 > 0:16:58one of these grand aristocratic families. She has a very different

0:16:58 > 0:17:01background and a different type of interest and I think that will show

0:17:01 > 0:17:06in the kind of work they do. During that interview there was a constant

0:17:06 > 0:17:09reference to the word team and there's a sense they both have a

0:17:09 > 0:17:19clear vision of the work

0:17:21 > 0:17:24they can do together and the changes they want to make. What also struck

0:17:24 > 0:17:26me about the interview was how at ease she seemed but nonetheless

0:17:26 > 0:17:29challengers will lie ahead for her, went there?Yes, she was very

0:17:29 > 0:17:32articulate and you could sense that, and she was at ease with herself and

0:17:32 > 0:17:35they were at ease with one another. It's interesting that she said

0:17:35 > 0:17:38people said to her you are an actress, you will cope with this

0:17:38 > 0:17:43fine. She is nervous about what lies ahead. Prince Harry said he warned

0:17:43 > 0:17:48her of the perils of royal life and the downsides of it. My sense is

0:17:48 > 0:17:52talking to people that work with her and her friends is she will probably

0:17:52 > 0:17:56just just fine to being a member of the Royal family.

0:17:56 > 0:17:59I'll have more from Kensington Palace later in the programme,

0:17:59 > 0:18:02but for now, with the rest of the day's news, it's back

0:18:02 > 0:18:04to Clive in the studio.

0:18:04 > 0:18:06Many thanks for that.

0:18:06 > 0:18:08Two pharmaceutical companies, say they'll invest more

0:18:08 > 0:18:11than a billion pounds in the UK, creating hundreds of new jobs

0:18:11 > 0:18:12in London and Manchester.

0:18:12 > 0:18:14It comes as the government unveiled its industrial strategy today,

0:18:14 > 0:18:17designed to boost productivity and attract investment in areas such

0:18:17 > 0:18:18as artificial intelligence, driverless cars and clean energy.

0:18:18 > 0:18:24Here's our Business Editor Simon Jack.

0:18:24 > 0:18:27Investing in new drugs is just the kind of medicine the economy

0:18:27 > 0:18:30needs after the bleak diagnosis of slowing growth and poor

0:18:30 > 0:18:33productivity it received last week.

0:18:33 > 0:18:35The Government's plan to incentivise investment arrives

0:18:35 > 0:18:41at a time when businesses are wary of Brexit uncertainty.

0:18:41 > 0:18:44We are the place that is going to be able to take a lead in these

0:18:44 > 0:18:46new industries of the future.

0:18:46 > 0:18:51At a time when companies are making investments,

0:18:51 > 0:18:54and in the context of Brexit, to set that out with a clarity

0:18:54 > 0:18:56that we have I think is all the more important.

0:18:56 > 0:19:00The way it's supposed to work is basically this.

0:19:00 > 0:19:04The Government invest money in research and development.

0:19:04 > 0:19:06Academic institutions work in partnership with business

0:19:06 > 0:19:07to provide skills and know-how.

0:19:07 > 0:19:10The Government provide test-beds for new products like faster trials

0:19:10 > 0:19:13of new drugs or public roads for driverless cars, and hey presto,

0:19:13 > 0:19:17private companies invest.

0:19:17 > 0:19:21This gene therapy company in Oxford likes the approach.

0:19:21 > 0:19:24This new strategy is very important for a business like ours.

0:19:24 > 0:19:27It allows us to look at what we can work on in the future,

0:19:27 > 0:19:30look at the grants we can get to help us expand the business

0:19:30 > 0:19:33and make our processes better, to keep us at the leading edge

0:19:33 > 0:19:34of our science.

0:19:34 > 0:19:36It's perhaps no surprise the Government chose life sciences

0:19:36 > 0:19:39to be the poster child for its new industrial strategy.

0:19:39 > 0:19:40These are highly skilled, highly productive jobs,

0:19:40 > 0:19:44in an industry which seems to have no problem attracting investment.

0:19:44 > 0:19:47Most of the UK economy is not like this.

0:19:47 > 0:19:49The Government's challenge will be to increase productivity in areas

0:19:49 > 0:19:52of the economy where workers are more likely to drive white vans

0:19:52 > 0:19:55than wear white coats.

0:19:55 > 0:19:57Most people work in what we sometimes call

0:19:57 > 0:19:58the everyday economy, so shops, care homes,

0:19:58 > 0:20:01public services as well.

0:20:01 > 0:20:03We think in order to boost that earning power, which is

0:20:03 > 0:20:07what the Secretary of State wanted to do, we need a strategy that

0:20:07 > 0:20:11takes them into account.

0:20:11 > 0:20:13Government intervention in industry has a chequered history

0:20:13 > 0:20:15with memories of money being poured into failing companies,

0:20:15 > 0:20:16but even opposition parties

0:20:16 > 0:20:20now agree the Government does have a role, and a problem.

0:20:20 > 0:20:21You're getting business and government working together

0:20:21 > 0:20:24and trying to think long-term and that must be right,

0:20:24 > 0:20:26but the problem the Government's now got is that,

0:20:26 > 0:20:28because of the Brexit negotiations, companies don't know

0:20:28 > 0:20:34where they stand so they are not investing, or very few of them are.

0:20:34 > 0:20:35Will the plan work?

0:20:35 > 0:20:38Of the two companies who announced investment today, one told

0:20:38 > 0:20:41the BBC it would have done it with or without the strategy

0:20:41 > 0:20:43and the second said it hadn't finalised the size

0:20:43 > 0:20:45of its investment, but the life sciences industry

0:20:45 > 0:20:47broadly welcomed it.

0:20:47 > 0:20:49There have been industrial strategies before and you haven't

0:20:49 > 0:20:51heard the last of this one.

0:20:51 > 0:21:00Simon Jack, BBC News.

0:21:00 > 0:21:03West Yorkshire Police say the five victims of a fatal car crash

0:21:03 > 0:21:06in Leeds over the weekend, were all in the vehicle

0:21:06 > 0:21:07when it hit a tree.

0:21:07 > 0:21:10Two men and three boys died in the incident on Saturday night

0:21:10 > 0:21:11in the Meanwood area of the city.

0:21:11 > 0:21:12Danny Savage reports.

0:21:12 > 0:21:14The scene of Saturday night's terrible crash

0:21:14 > 0:21:16remains sealed off today.

0:21:16 > 0:21:19The search for evidence to establish how and why a stolen car

0:21:19 > 0:21:20careered off a straight road.

0:21:20 > 0:21:22The tree it hit is scarred,

0:21:22 > 0:21:30as are some of the people who were first on the scene.

0:21:30 > 0:21:33When I arrived here in the early hours of Sunday morning,

0:21:33 > 0:21:37this was a catastrophic scene.

0:21:37 > 0:21:39All the witnesses, all the police officers,

0:21:39 > 0:21:41all the emergency services that were here would have seen

0:21:41 > 0:21:45absolutely a scene of total carnage.

0:21:45 > 0:21:47Named locally, the youngest victims were

0:21:47 > 0:21:55Ellis and Elliott Thornton, who were brothers aged just 12 and 14.

0:21:55 > 0:21:57Also in the car was 15-year-old Darnell Harte

0:21:57 > 0:21:59along with 24-year-old Robbie Meerun

0:21:59 > 0:22:05and father of two Anthoney Armour who was also 24.

0:22:05 > 0:22:08The Renault Clio was stolen and some of the people in it

0:22:08 > 0:22:11were known to police.

0:22:11 > 0:22:14It's also understood there were six people in the car at the time

0:22:14 > 0:22:16which is designed to take a maximum of five passengers.

0:22:16 > 0:22:23The one survivor, aged 15, was arrested on Saturday night.

0:22:23 > 0:22:26He remains in custody as the families of those who died

0:22:26 > 0:22:34struggled to deal with the aftermath.

0:22:34 > 0:22:36Six former British soldiers, who've been in prison in India

0:22:36 > 0:22:38since 2013 are to be released.

0:22:38 > 0:22:40The so called "Chennai Six" were arrested along with 29

0:22:40 > 0:22:42others on weapons charges, while working as security guards

0:22:42 > 0:22:45on ships in the Indian Ocean.

0:22:45 > 0:22:47Their families are now waiting to hear when they'll

0:22:47 > 0:22:51be returning home.

0:22:51 > 0:22:53More than 100,000 people have been ordered

0:22:53 > 0:22:55to leave their homes, after warnings that Mount Agung

0:22:55 > 0:22:59on the island of Bali could erupt at any moment.

0:22:59 > 0:23:01The international airport has already been closed,

0:23:01 > 0:23:03and officials say people will be forced to evacuate

0:23:03 > 0:23:04the area if necessary.

0:23:04 > 0:23:12Tom Burridge has the story.

0:23:12 > 0:23:14A giant cloud of rocks, glass, crystal and gas spews out

0:23:14 > 0:23:20of Bali's tallest volcano.

0:23:20 > 0:23:23Life near Mount Agung goes on, even as the authorities

0:23:23 > 0:23:28urge locals to leave.

0:23:28 > 0:23:31The hope - that there won't be the death and destruction wrought

0:23:31 > 0:23:35by the volcano last time around.

0:23:37 > 0:23:39That was in 1963.

0:23:39 > 0:23:41In a country with a history of volcanic eruptions,

0:23:41 > 0:23:44this was one of the worst.

0:23:44 > 0:23:47More than 1,000 died.

0:23:47 > 0:23:51The orange glow today, magma visible at the top of the volcano.

0:23:51 > 0:23:53A clue that a full-scale eruption could come soon.

0:23:56 > 0:23:58As the magma has moved up through the volcano,

0:23:58 > 0:24:00it's heated water inside, creating steam and pressure,

0:24:00 > 0:24:07hurling fragments of rock thousands of metres into the air.

0:24:07 > 0:24:12In villages, some have no choice but to stay put.

0:24:12 > 0:24:17"I'm scared but I don't have the money to leave," says this woman.

0:24:17 > 0:24:20But some tourists are still there, as even experts struggle to predict

0:24:20 > 0:24:21what this volcano will do next.

0:24:21 > 0:24:31Tom Burridge, BBC News.

0:24:33 > 0:24:35England have lost the first Ashes Test

0:24:35 > 0:24:36in Brisbane by 10 wickets.

0:24:36 > 0:24:39Australia needed just 56 runs to win on the final day

0:24:39 > 0:24:41and reached that target in a little more than an hour.

0:24:41 > 0:24:44The second match in the series starts on Saturday in Adelaide.

0:24:44 > 0:24:46We'll be rejoining Fiona at Kensington Palace in a moment,

0:24:46 > 0:24:49but first, time for a look at the weather,

0:24:49 > 0:24:50and Chris Fawkes is here.

0:24:54 > 0:24:58Our weather will be turning colder over the next few days, but it was a

0:24:58 > 0:25:03glorious end to the day in Scotland. This picture shows the setting sun

0:25:03 > 0:25:08over the skies in Fife. Cold enough for snow to be on the ground in

0:25:08 > 0:25:12parts of Scotland, and Glencoe have announced they will start the skiing

0:25:12 > 0:25:17season tomorrow. On the satellite picture today we have had cloud for

0:25:17 > 0:25:22England and Wales, shower clouds rattling into the north and west and

0:25:22 > 0:25:25overnight there will be rain affecting parts of southern England

0:25:25 > 0:25:29for a time. The rest of the UK will have showers driven in by blustery

0:25:29 > 0:25:34winds. Overnight temperatures down into the low single figures but

0:25:34 > 0:25:38potentially it could turn icy in Northern Ireland and Scotland. The

0:25:38 > 0:25:42weather will stay on the cold side for the next few days because of

0:25:42 > 0:25:47this ridge of high pressure in the Atlantic and out over Greenland as

0:25:47 > 0:25:53well which is stopping milder Atlantic air reaching our shores.

0:25:53 > 0:26:00Instead we have cold air with us and temperatures will be dropping down,

0:26:00 > 0:26:04temperatures in Sheffield round about three Celsius, 5 degrees lower

0:26:04 > 0:26:10than the average for the time of year. Foremost there will be plenty

0:26:10 > 0:26:14of sunshine, with blustery showers across western areas and as winds

0:26:14 > 0:26:18turn to a more northerly direction, we will start to drag showers in

0:26:18 > 0:26:21from the North Sea across the eastern side of Scotland and the

0:26:21 > 0:26:27eastern coast of England as well. A cold day. Through both Wednesday and

0:26:27 > 0:26:34Thursday we will have showers around the Irish Sea coast, showers too by

0:26:34 > 0:26:39the North Sea and it will feel colder with temperatures between

0:26:39 > 0:26:42three and seven Celsius. That's the latest weather but we are going to

0:26:42 > 0:26:46go back to Kensington Palace to reflect on today's big news with

0:26:46 > 0:26:48Fiona.

0:26:51 > 0:26:53We're at Kensington Palace, where Prince Harry and Meghan Markle

0:26:53 > 0:26:55appeared earlier, announcing their engagement and where

0:26:55 > 0:26:57the couple will live after their wedding next spring.

0:26:57 > 0:26:59They revealed how Harry got down on one knee to propose,

0:26:59 > 0:27:01and she had no hesitation in saying yes.

0:27:01 > 0:27:04Among wellwishers around the world, the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh

0:27:04 > 0:27:05say they are delighted.

0:27:05 > 0:27:08In a moment we'll have all the news from where you are

0:27:08 > 0:27:10but first let's take a look at some of the key images of the day...

0:27:18 > 0:27:23When I walked into that room and saw her, there she was sitting there, I

0:27:23 > 0:27:31thought OK, I'm going to have to up my game!Just an amazing surprise.

0:27:31 > 0:27:37It was so sweet and natural and very romantic. He got on one knee. I

0:27:37 > 0:27:43could barely let you finish proposing!She didn't let me finish!

0:27:43 > 0:27:48Have you heard, there is breaking news out of London this morning.

0:27:48 > 0:27:52Prince Harry and American Meghan Markle are engaged to be married.

0:27:52 > 0:27:58It's fantastic, marvellous.We wanted to come and see.Wonderful

0:27:58 > 0:28:02news, I think it is great. Another royal wedding, something to look

0:28:02 > 0:28:06forward to.Thrills, thank you,
