:00:24. > :00:28.Good afternoon. It's estimated millions of shoppers headed to the

:00:28. > :00:32.shopsed to bag a bargain, at the Boxing Day sales. Retailers across

:00:32. > :00:35.the UK are reporting strong sales. Some stores opened at 6am. Many of

:00:35. > :00:44.them offered huge discounts after a tough trading year. Here's Richard

:00:44. > :00:48.Lister. And they're off! Customers came from around the world to be

:00:48. > :00:52.first through the doors of selfridges in London. They broke

:00:52. > :00:56.sales record for the firm today. Its four branches made more than 1

:00:56. > :01:01.million an hour. We didn't spend much throughout the year. We saved

:01:01. > :01:05.up for this. We haven't spent much. It is all about the big sales.

:01:05. > :01:11.don't really have a budget, but come to have a good look around and

:01:11. > :01:15.see what bargains we can get really. One, two, three... Go! They were

:01:15. > :01:19.weary already, having lined up long before dawn. Queues at some shops

:01:19. > :01:22.were several thousand strong by opening time, from London to Leeds,

:01:22. > :01:26.shopping centres reported big increases in the numbers of people

:01:26. > :01:29.looking for a bargain. When the shops are as busy as this, it's

:01:29. > :01:33.hard to imagine that this year has been a tough time for retailers. It

:01:33. > :01:37.has been for many, of course, some High Street names didn't even make

:01:37. > :01:44.it to Christmas this year and for those that remain, prices have been

:01:44. > :01:47.slashed for weeks and for some, the season will be make or break.

:01:47. > :01:51.Christmas! Across the country stores have been bribing customers

:01:52. > :01:56.to come in with big price cuts. This Teesside shopping centre was

:01:56. > :01:59.typical. Profit margins have been cut to the bone. There's a massive

:01:59. > :02:02.margin impact for this. Some of the stores will come out of this in

:02:02. > :02:07.January and February, look back, counting the figures and thinking,

:02:07. > :02:11.we've not have a very good Christmas. Glasgow's shoppers were

:02:11. > :02:15.also out in force. Online sales have been booming too. But some

:02:15. > :02:20.retailers will now be anxiously checking their sales figures to see

:02:20. > :02:24.if they've had enough customers to cover their costs.

:02:24. > :02:29.As thousands of shoppers were at the sales, a man was stabbed to

:02:29. > :02:33.death in Oxford street in Central London. He's thought to have been

:02:33. > :02:36.in his late teens or early 20s. Police officers, an ambulance team

:02:36. > :02:39.and Air Ambulance were deployed, but the man died at the scene.

:02:39. > :02:46.Philippa Thomas is there for us now. Terrible thing to happen and in

:02:46. > :02:52.full view of shoppers? understand it happened right behind

:02:52. > :02:55.where I'm standing now, inside a Foot Locker sports shoe store. An

:02:55. > :02:59.argument broke out. What we hear is it seems that the argument spilled

:02:59. > :03:03.out into the street. That's where the young man was stabbed. Now

:03:03. > :03:07.there is a forensics tent there. Officers are gathering what

:03:07. > :03:11.evidence they can. I spoke to the inspector in charge of the crime

:03:11. > :03:15.scene and he told me that ten arrests were made, nine of which

:03:15. > :03:18.they're pretty certain are linked to this incident. The police know

:03:18. > :03:23.the identity of the young man. There are family members at a

:03:23. > :03:28.nearby police station, but they haven't revealed the identity yet.

:03:28. > :03:32.Hundreds of thousands of shoppers make it to Oxford Street on Boxing

:03:32. > :03:35.Day, potentially a lot of witnesses and a lot of disruption.

:03:35. > :03:39.Police in Greater Manchester are investigating the death of a man

:03:39. > :03:43.who was shot in Salford early this morning while out with a group of

:03:43. > :03:47.friends. Officers say the 23-year- old Lancaster University student,

:03:47. > :03:51.who was visiting the area for Christmas, was shot at close range.

:03:51. > :03:55.Judith Moritz reports. In the early hours of this morning, a group of

:03:55. > :03:59.nine Indian students visiting Manchester for Christmas were here,

:03:59. > :04:01.outside a McDonald's restaurant, a couple of miles from the city

:04:01. > :04:06.centre. They were approached by two men, who started a conversation

:04:06. > :04:09.with one of the group. Just A Minute later, a handgun was pulled

:04:09. > :04:15.out and the gunman shot the 23- year-old student in the head at

:04:15. > :04:20.close range. The police have launched a murder investigation.

:04:20. > :04:23.It's a shocking incident. It would appear at this stage to be

:04:23. > :04:27.unprovoked. We want people from the community to come forward, if

:04:27. > :04:30.they've witnessed this and can tell us who's responsible or have any

:04:30. > :04:34.information whatsoever. If they were in the area or saw someone

:04:34. > :04:38.running off, a lad with a grey top, that would be very helpful to us.

:04:38. > :04:43.The gunman is described as a slim, white man in his 20s. Police have

:04:43. > :04:47.not yet released the identity of the 23-year-old man who died,

:04:47. > :04:51.except to say that he'd been studying at Lancaster University,

:04:51. > :04:55.and his parents, who are in India, have been informed. This is the

:04:55. > :04:58.second time that someone's been shot dead in this immediate area in

:04:58. > :05:03.recent months. In September there was another fatal gaun tack over

:05:03. > :05:07.the road from here. The police say there's no connection between the

:05:07. > :05:13.two shootings, but there will be understandable anxiety in the

:05:13. > :05:17.community to. That end, they've increased patrols here.

:05:17. > :05:20.Prince Phillip is said to be in good spirits having spent another

:05:20. > :05:23.day in hospital. Buckingham Palace declined to comment on when he

:05:23. > :05:25.would be discharged. He's not expected to leave hospital today.

:05:25. > :05:32.Our correspondent Colette Hume is at Papworth Hospital for us. What

:05:32. > :05:35.more can you tell us? In the last few minutes, it's become clear that

:05:35. > :05:38.the Duke of Edinburgh will not leave hospital here in

:05:38. > :05:41.Cambridgeshire tonight. That will be a fourth night he spends here

:05:42. > :05:46.following that procedure on Friday. He arrived at the hospital

:05:46. > :05:50.complaining of chest pains. He's had no visitors at all today. But a

:05:50. > :05:53.spokesman for the Palace says that he is under observation, he is in

:05:53. > :05:57.good spirits and Her Majesty, the Queen, is being kept informed of

:05:57. > :06:02.her husband's progress. We're not expecting any more from the Palace

:06:02. > :06:04.tomorrow. No visitors today. Yesterday six of the Queen and

:06:04. > :06:08.Prince Phillip's eight grandchildren came to the hospital,

:06:08. > :06:10.spending around 45 minutes here. The Queen visited her husband on

:06:10. > :06:17.Saturday. That's the situation tonight. The Prince is preparing to

:06:17. > :06:21.spend a fourth night here at Papworth Hospital.

:06:21. > :06:25.Syrian Human Rights Act vists say at least 20 people have been killed

:06:25. > :06:28.in Syria today by government forces. It took place in Homs. After nine

:06:28. > :06:31.months of violence the latest deaths come on the day 50 Arab

:06:31. > :06:33.League observers are due to arrive in the country to monitor the

:06:34. > :06:36.treatment of pro-democracy protesters. The BBC and other

:06:36. > :06:43.journalists are prevented from reporting within Syria, but we can

:06:43. > :06:52.speak to Jim Muir who's in Beirut. Disturbing images emerging of that

:06:52. > :06:58.attack in Homs. Absolutely, yes. We're shown on u tube video footage

:06:58. > :07:03.which is too horrendous for us to show. It's too explicit. It shows

:07:03. > :07:07.at least four bodies sprawled in the streets in debris and amidst

:07:07. > :07:12.smashed cars, obviously the aftermath of shelling. We're told

:07:13. > :07:17.this habed today in Homs, which has been the focus of a lot of the

:07:17. > :07:20.violence this the last few days. This comes just as the Arab League

:07:20. > :07:24.monitors are on the way. They're in the air now. They should be

:07:24. > :07:28.arriving in an hour or two ready to begin the job of deploying around

:07:28. > :07:32.the country very soon, probably first thing in the morning, because

:07:32. > :07:35.the way has been paved by an advanced group who have been there

:07:35. > :07:40.since last week. They will be trying to find out the truth of

:07:41. > :07:44.what is happening in places like Homs, is the government randomly

:07:44. > :07:48.shelling independent neighbourhoods, killing civilians for its own sake?

:07:48. > :07:50.Or is there armed resistance from those areas, as it strongly

:07:50. > :07:55.suggested. That's what they'll be trying to find out. Whether they

:07:55. > :07:58.can get there and do it is an open question at the moment.

:07:58. > :08:03.The authorities in Japan have been criticised sharply for their

:08:03. > :08:06.handling of the nuclear accident at the Fukushima plant following the

:08:07. > :08:11.tsunami in March. A government- appointed panel described the

:08:11. > :08:14.response to the disaster as "confused". They found the plant's

:08:14. > :08:18.operators and industry regulator failed to anticipate the disaster

:08:18. > :08:24.and grossly underestimated the risk of tsunami.

:08:24. > :08:29.Horse racing now and Kauto Star has won a record fifth King George VI

:08:29. > :08:34.chase. Ridden by Ruby Walsh and trained by Paul Nicholls, he held

:08:34. > :08:38.off last season's winner, Long Run. Tim Franks reports. Weather at

:08:38. > :08:42.Kempton may have been mild. The line up was frankly hot. Never mind

:08:42. > :08:49.that there were seven runners for the King George. This ha had the

:08:49. > :08:55.smell of a two-horse race, Long Run and Kauto Star, young versus old,

:08:55. > :08:59.amateur jockey versus naturaled pro. At the last King George, Long Run

:08:59. > :09:05.overwhelmed caughto, winning by a country might. This time Kauto Star

:09:05. > :09:10.made the running and jumped with energy and precision. Long Run,

:09:10. > :09:14.several years his junior, could only watch as Kauto stepped further

:09:14. > :09:22.and further ahead. Long Run may have been the bookies' favourite.

:09:22. > :09:26.No doubt about the crowd's. They roared with joy. This horse is

:09:26. > :09:31.amazing. He's outlasted the best of all time. He's lasted than any

:09:31. > :09:36.other horse. That makes him so brilliant. No horse before has won

:09:36. > :09:42.the King George five times. Horse racing is a soft hearted, drink

:09:42. > :09:46.soaked sport. Today most fans' noses are red with emotion.

:09:46. > :09:51.There's been the busy Boxing Day football schedule. Manchester

:09:51. > :09:56.United celebrating after an emphatic win over Wigan, 5-0
