:00:05. > :00:10.Two people are stabbed, one fatally, in separate incidents, among

:00:10. > :00:15.thousands of sales shoppers. The stabbings took place on London's

:00:15. > :00:18.Oxford Street as shoppers flocked to the boxing day sales.

:00:18. > :00:27.Prince Philip spends his fourth night in hospital but is said to be

:00:27. > :00:30.in good spirits. A magic, magic moment. Kauto Star has delivered a

:00:30. > :00:40.again! And Kauto Star rides into the

:00:40. > :00:46.

:00:46. > :00:48.record books with a stunning fifth Good evening. Two people have been

:00:48. > :00:55.stabbed, one fatally, amid horrified shoppers on London's

:00:55. > :00:58.Oxford Street. As thousands of people thronged the shops for the

:00:58. > :01:01.first day of the post-Christmas sales, a teenager was stabbed after

:01:01. > :01:04.a fight broke out. Police officers, an ambulance team and an air

:01:04. > :01:10.ambulance were deployed but he died at the scene. Hours later, a second

:01:10. > :01:14.man was stabbed in the leg. Philippa Thomas reports.

:01:14. > :01:17.Police officers had to hold back thousands of shoppers intent on

:01:17. > :01:21.bargain hunting in the heart of London, as the news filtered

:01:21. > :01:25.through that a young man had been stabbed to death. There had been an

:01:25. > :01:32.argument inside a Ford Ka Chris Hughes store. The fight had, it

:01:32. > :01:37.seems, spilled out onto the pavement -- inside a foot blocker

:01:37. > :01:41.shoe store. The police appealed for witnesses as they began gathering

:01:42. > :01:48.evidence. He would appear to have been stabbed, I cannot confirm that

:01:48. > :01:52.yet but it seems a weapon has been used. There appears to have been

:01:52. > :02:01.two groups of young people opposing each other, involved in this

:02:01. > :02:05.incident. Officers say eight young -- a number of knives have been

:02:05. > :02:08.retrieved. Police say this section will be cordoned off at least three

:02:08. > :02:12.tomorrow. It should be one of the busiest sections of shopping street

:02:12. > :02:16.in Britain but instead, it is very much a crime scene. Tonight, a

:02:16. > :02:20.second attack has been reported a near by. Another man stabbed and

:02:20. > :02:24.taken to hospital. Scotland Yard says it is too early to say whether

:02:24. > :02:29.the attacks are linked. Across the country, it's estimated

:02:29. > :02:31.that millions of shoppers headed to the shops for the Boxing Day sales.

:02:31. > :02:34.Retailers are reporting strong levels of spending - some stores

:02:34. > :02:44.opened at 6:00 this morning. Many of them offered huge discounts

:02:44. > :02:46.

:02:46. > :02:49.after a tough trading year. Here's And their off! Customers came from

:02:50. > :02:55.around the world to be first through the doors of Selfridges in

:02:55. > :03:00.London. It helped break sales records for the firm today. It made

:03:00. > :03:06.more than 1 million a year. We did not spend much the Rabiya, we saved

:03:06. > :03:12.up for this. It is all about the good sales. -- not spent much

:03:13. > :03:17.throughout the year. I have come to see what bargains we can get.

:03:17. > :03:21.were weary already, having lined up long before dawn. Queues at some

:03:21. > :03:25.shops were several thousand strong by opening time. From London to

:03:25. > :03:29.Leeds, shopping centres reported big increases in the number of

:03:29. > :03:33.people looking for a bargain. When the shops are as busy as this, it

:03:33. > :03:37.is hard to imagine this time -- this year has been a tough time for

:03:37. > :03:42.retailers. But it has been for many, some high-street names did not even

:03:42. > :03:47.make it to Christmas this year. For those that remain, prices have been

:03:47. > :03:51.slashed four weeks and for some, this season will be make or break.

:03:51. > :03:56.-- slashed full weeks. Stores have been bribing customers to come in

:03:56. > :04:01.with big price cuts. This Teesside shopping centre was typical, profit

:04:01. > :04:04.margins have been cut to the bone. There is a massive impact for this

:04:04. > :04:09.and some of these stores will look back, counting the figures and

:04:09. > :04:16.think, we have not had a very good Christmas. Glasgow's shoppers will

:04:16. > :04:19.also out in force, drawn by the big bargains. -- were also out in force.

:04:19. > :04:23.Some retailers will be checking figures to see if they have had

:04:23. > :04:29.enough customers to cover their costs.

:04:29. > :04:32.Police in Greater Manchester have named the Lancaster University

:04:32. > :04:34.student shot in Salford early this morning. 23-year-old Anuj Bidve was

:04:35. > :04:37.killed while out with a group of friends. Officers say he was

:04:38. > :04:42.visiting the area for Christmas and was shot at close range. Judith

:04:42. > :04:47.Moritz reports. This is Anuj Bidve, a 23-year-old

:04:47. > :04:50.Indian National who was a student at Lancaster University. Shot dead

:04:50. > :04:56.in the early hours of this morning, his friends have paid tribute

:04:56. > :04:59.online, saying they can't believe what has happened. He had decided

:04:59. > :05:04.to stay in Manchester over the Christmas break, and was out for

:05:04. > :05:07.the night with a group of friends also from India. They were outside

:05:07. > :05:11.this McDonald's restaurant, a short distance from the city centre, when

:05:11. > :05:15.they were approached by two men. One of them spoke briefly to Anuj

:05:15. > :05:18.Bidve before pulling out a handgun and shooting him in the head at

:05:18. > :05:22.close range, and running off. The police say the attack was

:05:22. > :05:27.completely unprovoked. It is a shocking incident. It would appear

:05:27. > :05:31.to be unprovoked. The important thing is, we want people from the

:05:31. > :05:37.community to come forward if they had witnessed this, and can tell us

:05:37. > :05:40.hook is responsible. If they were in the area Abby Tan, if they saw

:05:40. > :05:44.someone running -- if they were in the area at the time and saw

:05:44. > :05:49.someone running of, in a grey top, that would be very helpful. The man

:05:49. > :05:53.is described as slim and white and in his 20s. Police have launched a

:05:53. > :05:57.murder inquiry and say they have not ruled out a racist motive. They

:05:57. > :06:04.have appealed for anyone with information to Concorde. It is the

:06:04. > :06:08.second and someone has been shot dead in this immediate area -- with

:06:08. > :06:12.information to come forward. The police say there is no connection

:06:12. > :06:16.between the two shootings but say there will be an understandable

:06:16. > :06:18.level of anxiety in the community, and have increased patrols here.

:06:18. > :06:21.Prince Philip is spending another night in hospital in Cambridgeshire

:06:21. > :06:24.after receiving treatment for a blocked artery in his heart.

:06:24. > :06:28.Buckingham Palace said he'd been in good spirits today. Our

:06:28. > :06:35.correspondent, Colette Hume, has more details.

:06:35. > :06:38.The Duke of Edinburgh will spend a fortnight here in Cambridgeshire. A

:06:38. > :06:43.spokesman for Buckingham Palace said the Duke remains under

:06:43. > :06:46.observation and is in good spirits. The Queen is being kept informed.

:06:46. > :06:50.Prince Philip, who is 90, has not had any royal visitors today.

:06:50. > :06:54.Yesterday, six of his eight grandchildren came here to the

:06:54. > :06:58.hospital and spent around 45 minutes at his bedside. They

:06:58. > :07:04.included Prince William, Prince Harry, Princess Beatrice, Princess

:07:04. > :07:14.Eugenie, tsar and Peter Phillips. On Saturday, the Queen and the

:07:14. > :07:15.

:07:15. > :07:18.couple's four children came here. - We are hoping for a further update

:07:18. > :07:21.from Buckingham Palace in the morning.

:07:21. > :07:24.Syrian human rights activists say at least 20 people have been killed

:07:24. > :07:27.in Syria today by government forces. The attacks took place in the city

:07:27. > :07:30.of Homs. After nine months of violence, the latest deaths come on

:07:30. > :07:32.the day 50 Arab League observers arrived in the country to monitor

:07:32. > :07:42.the treatment of pro-democracy protestors. Jim Muir reports from

:07:42. > :07:49.

:07:49. > :07:53.What the activists want the world to see. Underwrote viable footage

:07:53. > :08:03.of what they called mac a r and verifiable footage of what they say

:08:03. > :08:04.

:08:04. > :08:10.is the destruction caused in Homs - They have showed pictures far too

:08:10. > :08:14.grim to broadcast of the limp and bleeding carcases on one of the

:08:14. > :08:17.streets in the Baba Amr district of Homs. Activists are calling it a

:08:17. > :08:20.massacre, that this has been going on for weeks with people being

:08:21. > :08:24.reported killed every day. Under the peace agreement signed with the

:08:24. > :08:27.Arab League, the government is supposed to withdraw armed forces

:08:27. > :08:35.from the streets. Apart from the shelling, it is clear that tanks

:08:35. > :08:40.are also there now. The Arab observers want to go to Homs as

:08:40. > :08:44.soon as they can. The advanced planning team has been taken to see

:08:44. > :08:48.the aftermath of the double bombing attack in Damascus on Friday. It

:08:48. > :08:52.was an unprecedented development which the authorities say the

:08:52. > :08:56.uprising is based on terrorism. Activists say the regime itself

:08:56. > :09:01.stage the bombings to impress the observers that it is all about

:09:01. > :09:09.terror. The monitors are hoping the authorities will be at least as co-

:09:09. > :09:12.operative in letting them see what is happening in Hall. -- in Homs.

:09:12. > :09:14.The authorities in Japan have been criticised sharply for their

:09:14. > :09:17.handling of the nuclear accident at the Fukushima plant following the

:09:17. > :09:20.tsunami in March. A government- appointed panel described the

:09:20. > :09:22.response to the disaster as "confused". Their report found the

:09:22. > :09:25.plant's operators - and industry regulators - had failed to

:09:25. > :09:31.anticipate the disaster and grossly underestimated the risk of a

:09:31. > :09:34.tsunami. The Agriculture Minister has said

:09:34. > :09:36.the Hunting Act "simply doesn't work". Jim Paice made his comments

:09:37. > :09:40.ahead of the traditional post- Christmas hunts across the country.

:09:40. > :09:43.He said the coalition had agreed there would be a vote on whether to

:09:43. > :09:45.repeal the act when there was time in the parliamentary calendar.

:09:45. > :09:49.Labour says it will oppose calls to change the law.

:09:49. > :09:52.Horse racing now, and Kauto Star has won a record fifth King George

:09:52. > :09:55.VI Chase at Kempton Park. Ridden by Ruby Walsh and trained by Paul

:09:55. > :10:02.Nicholls, Kauto Star held off the favourite - last season's winner

:10:02. > :10:06.Long Run - to win by a-length-and- a-quarter. Tim Franks reports.

:10:06. > :10:11.The weather at Kempton may have been mild, the line-up was Frankie

:10:11. > :10:17.hot. Never mind that there was 7th runners for the King George, this

:10:17. > :10:22.had the smell the two-horse race -- frankly hot. Long Run and Kauto

:10:22. > :10:30.Star, young versus old, amateur jockey this is an old pro. At the

:10:30. > :10:37.Last King George, a Long Run won by a country mile. This time, Kauto

:10:37. > :10:40.Star made the running and jumped with energy and precision. Long run

:10:40. > :10:50.may have been the bookie's favourite, no doubt about the

:10:50. > :10:55.crowds, they roared with joy. keep a horse going as long as this

:10:55. > :11:03.is amazing. He has outlasted any other horse and that is what makes

:11:03. > :11:08.him so brilliant. No horse before has won the King George six-times.

:11:08. > :11:17.Kauto Star is one of the greats. There's been the traditional busy

:11:17. > :11:21.Boxing Day football schedule. Match of the Day is on BBC One after this

:11:21. > :11:23.bulletin, so if you'd rather not know the results you might want to

:11:23. > :11:33.leave the room now. And it's Manchester United fans who are

:11:33. > :11:35.

:11:35. > :11:38.celebrating after an emphatic win over Wigan. A 5-0 victory at Old

:11:38. > :11:42.Trafford saw them draw level on points with rivals, City, at the

:11:42. > :11:44.top of the Premier League table, as Roberto Mancini's side were held to

:11:44. > :11:48.a goalless draw at West Brom. Elsewhere, Newcastle beat Bolton 2-

:11:48. > :11:50.0, Chelsea's title hopes suffered a blow with a 1-1 draw against Fulham,

:11:50. > :11:52.and bottom-of-the-table Blackburn picked up a valuable point against

:11:52. > :11:54.Liverpool. The main news tonight - Two people
