:00:00. > :00:11.Power cuts and flooding affect tens of thousands of people across the

:00:12. > :00:15.UK. 24,000 homes are still without electricity - and more bad weather

:00:16. > :00:18.is forecast. The Queen reflects on her 60-year

:00:19. > :00:24.reign - and the latest addition to her family.

:00:25. > :00:25.And the final festive lunch for British troops in Afghanistan -

:00:26. > :00:52.before next year's pullout. Good evening. Tens of thousands of

:00:53. > :00:55.people across the UK remain affected by power cuts and flooding, caused

:00:56. > :01:00.by the severe storms that swept the country earlier this week. Nearly

:01:01. > :01:04.24,000 homes are still without electricity, in the east and

:01:05. > :01:09.south-east of England. There are 95 flood warnings in place in England

:01:10. > :01:12.and Wales, and 15 in Scotland. And there's a warning of more bad

:01:13. > :01:22.weather later this week - as bands of heavy rain and strong winds move

:01:23. > :01:27.across the UK. Jon Brain reports. It wasn't Santa Claus they were waiting

:01:28. > :01:31.for in Kent this morning, it was the rescue teams. Dozens of residents

:01:32. > :01:38.here had to be plucked from their homes as the floodwaters rose. The

:01:39. > :01:42.emergency services were called out across large swathes of the South of

:01:43. > :01:50.England to deal with the aftermath of the Christmas storms. In Kent,

:01:51. > :01:55.the river burst its banks bringing disruption for miles around. In

:01:56. > :01:58.Sussex and Surrey, the culprit was the River Mole. One of its victims

:01:59. > :02:03.was the local football club in Leatherhead. We have been hit by at

:02:04. > :02:09.least four foot of floods in my opinion and the damage is immense.

:02:10. > :02:13.At this pub, they had been due to host Christmas lunch. Instead, the

:02:14. > :02:21.day was spent pumping out the beer cellar. The most widespread problem

:02:22. > :02:26.has been power cuts. The Hood family, one of thousands, who spent

:02:27. > :02:31.Christmas Day by candlelight. It is really inconvenient now because the

:02:32. > :02:34.lads are starting to think about tea, I don't know what I'm going to

:02:35. > :02:41.do them because everything that I had planned I was going to cook. I

:02:42. > :02:44.can't because I'm without electric. Although they may have been dealt an

:02:45. > :02:48.unlucky hand this Christmas, they are grateful that at least they have

:02:49. > :02:52.escaped the floodwater which has hit their neighbouring villages. After

:02:53. > :02:56.delivering its unwelcome festive gift of flooding across two

:02:57. > :02:59.counties, the River Mole is be grinning to subside. It's been a

:03:00. > :03:03.miserable Christmas Day for thousands of people and for many,

:03:04. > :03:07.Boxing Day will be about the clear-up. The respite could be

:03:08. > :03:15.short-lived. There is a warning that more bad weather and more potential

:03:16. > :03:18.flooding is on the way. In her Christmas message, the Queen

:03:19. > :03:22.has spoken of the need to pause for reflection - as she looked back at

:03:23. > :03:25.some of the notable Royal events of the year, including the 60th

:03:26. > :03:29.anniversary of her Coronation, and the birth of her great-grandson. Our

:03:30. > :03:35.Royal correspondent, Nicholas Witchell, reports.

:03:36. > :03:39.Morning service at Sandringham Church and pretty much everyone was

:03:40. > :03:43.there, with one exception - Prince George had been left in his nursery,

:03:44. > :03:48.more interested his parents told the crowds in the wrapping paper than

:03:49. > :03:58.his presents and at five Monday who can blame him! In her Christmas Day

:03:59. > :04:03.broadcast, recorded a few days ago, the Queen spoke of the importance of

:04:04. > :04:08.pausing occasionally to take stock. We all need to get the balance right

:04:09. > :04:16.between action and reflection. She looked back across 60 years. I

:04:17. > :04:20.myself had cause to reflect this year at Westminster Abbey on my own

:04:21. > :04:34.pledge of service made in that great church on Coronation Day 60 years

:04:35. > :04:37.earlier. All this I promise to do... After reflecting on the past and the

:04:38. > :04:42.many changes that have occurred since she came to the throne, a

:04:43. > :04:46.nudge towards the future. Prince Charles was shown deputising for the

:04:47. > :04:51.Queen at a Commonwealth Summit. And then the birth of the new third in

:04:52. > :04:55.line to the throne. Here at home, my own family is a little larger this

:04:56. > :05:00.Christmas. The arrival of a baby gives everyone the chance to

:05:01. > :05:07.contemplate the future with renewed happiness and hope. After the

:05:08. > :05:09.christening, we gathered for the traditional photograph. This is

:05:10. > :05:16.video footage which has not been seen before. Its significance is it

:05:17. > :05:21.shows three future monarchs. It was a happy occasion, bringing together

:05:22. > :05:41.four generations. 2013 has been the year when the hitherto transition

:05:42. > :05:44.will continue into 2014. Egypt's military-backed interim

:05:45. > :05:45.government has declared the former ruling party, the Muslim

:05:46. > :05:48.Brotherhood, a terrorist organisation. The Brotherhood's

:05:49. > :05:50.candidate, Mohamed Morsi, won the country's first democratic

:05:51. > :05:56.presidential elections, before being deposed by the military in July.

:05:57. > :06:02.Thousands of its supporters have been arrested in a crackdown.

:06:03. > :06:05.At least 37 people are reported to have been killed in two separate

:06:06. > :06:08.bomb attacks against Christians in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad. One

:06:09. > :06:11.exploded near a church as worshippers left a Christmas

:06:12. > :06:17.service. Another bomb ripped through a market in a Christian area of the

:06:18. > :06:21.city. In South Sudan, the United Nations

:06:22. > :06:25.has agreed to almost double the size of the peacekeeping force. An extra

:06:26. > :06:28.6,000 soldiers and police officers will be sent there. It's believed

:06:29. > :06:33.thousands of people have been killed in the last ten days.

:06:34. > :06:38.Pope Francis began the Christmas day messages with a call for humility

:06:39. > :06:41.and peace. The Archbishop of Canterbury has also given his first

:06:42. > :06:43.Christmas Day sermon as Archbishop, highlighting what he described as

:06:44. > :06:48.the injustices facing Britain's poor. Our religious affairs

:06:49. > :06:56.correspondent, Robert Piggott, was watching.

:06:57. > :07:00.For the popstar Pope on his first Christmas in Rome, a rapturous

:07:01. > :07:05.reception from the crowd packing St Peter's Square. In nine months,

:07:06. > :07:10.Francis has captured the imagination of young and old alike and

:07:11. > :07:17.transformed the face of the Roman Catholic Church. His message, a plea

:07:18. > :07:26.for an end to the violence afflicting South Sudan, the cent

:07:27. > :07:30.African Republic, Nigeria and Iraq. TRANSLATION: Wars shatter and hurt

:07:31. > :07:34.so many lives. Too many lives have been shattered in recent times by

:07:35. > :07:39.the conflict in Syria, fuelling hatred and vengeance. We must

:07:40. > :07:42.continue to ask the Lord to spare the blessed Syrian people from

:07:43. > :07:49.further suffering to enable all parties in the conflict to put an

:07:50. > :07:54.end to all violence. In his first Christmas sermon as

:07:55. > :07:57.Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby told Anglicans to challenge

:07:58. > :08:04.the greed and selfishness that contributed to poverty in Britain.

:08:05. > :08:08.Where people are measured in their words by only what they can produce,

:08:09. > :08:14.by what economic value they have, Christ is dive anied -- denied and

:08:15. > :08:26.our own humanity corrupted. About 5,000 British troops

:08:27. > :08:29.celebrated Christmas Day in Afghanistan - getting through more

:08:30. > :08:35.than 1,700 kilogrammes of turkey and nearly 8,500 mince pies. It's likely

:08:36. > :08:38.to be the last Christmas British forces spend in the country - the

:08:39. > :08:47.pullout begins next year. Karen Allen reports from Helmand.

:08:48. > :08:53.The last Christmas in Afghanistan. Morning. Uniform restrictions eased,

:08:54. > :08:58.in time-honoured fashion soldiers woke to senior officers serving them

:08:59. > :09:03.tea, a gesture of thanks. Merry Christmas. Then, Santa arrived with

:09:04. > :09:08.a bang marking the start of a charity run to lift the spirits of

:09:09. > :09:13.the troops missing family back home. Merry Christmas! The end may be in

:09:14. > :09:16.sight for Britain's long war in Afghanistan, but there are still

:09:17. > :09:23.Taliban attacks as these soldiers know only too well. The cost is

:09:24. > :09:28.being counted in lives lost. And despite the festivities and presents

:09:29. > :09:33.this Christmas, that sacrifice hasn't gone unnoticed by their

:09:34. > :09:36.comrades here. Even though we are thinking about Christmas, we are

:09:37. > :09:41.thinking about everybody back home as well. It is a really hard time

:09:42. > :09:45.for all our friends and family and especially the families who have

:09:46. > :09:49.lost loved ones this year. As Britain's combat role in Afghanistan

:09:50. > :09:55.draws to a close, this will be a Christmas they will never forget.

:09:56. > :09:57.You can see more out all today's stories on the BBC News Channel. But

:09:58. > :10:22.from me, good evening. Good evening. After a recent weather

:10:23. > :10:26.events, any quieter weather will be welcome and that is what most of us

:10:27. > :10:30.had. Through the night, with clearer skies, things will turn quite

:10:31. > :10:32.frosty, a cold night to come. We will see one or two showers

:10:33. > :10:34.continuing to
