:00:20. > :00:24.A woman in her 70s has died after a car ploughed into a coffee

:00:25. > :00:29.A number of people are said to have been injured at the Costa Coffee,

:00:30. > :00:32.and roads in the centre of the town have been closed to traffic.

:00:33. > :00:35.The car remains embedded in the front of the building.

:00:36. > :00:37.Our news correspondent Andy Moore is in Westerham.

:00:38. > :00:48.The operation to remove the car is just getting under way behind me.

:00:49. > :00:52.One shopkeeper he said the noise of the impact was so loud, she thought

:00:53. > :00:58.it was a bomb. She couldn't see the car because it was lodged inside the

:00:59. > :01:00.shop. She went to give first aid and she could see the injured lying

:01:01. > :01:05.among smashed tables and chairs. An image taken soon after the car

:01:06. > :01:08.crashed into the coffee shop. It's on the high street

:01:09. > :01:10.and a popular meeting place I actually heard that

:01:11. > :01:14.big bang outside and it One of the Costa staff asked me

:01:15. > :01:22.to see a woman behind the counter. She didn't reply back,

:01:23. > :01:31.but I could see clearly she is dead. Hours later the car remained

:01:32. > :01:35.lodged in the coffee shop. Two people on board were cut free

:01:36. > :01:37.by the Fire Service. A woman in her 70s was

:01:38. > :01:42.declared dead at the scene. The car first lost control

:01:43. > :01:45.up the street there. These fluorescent markers

:01:46. > :01:48.show its path across the pavement. It was 10:30am, it was full

:01:49. > :01:53.of people kicking off A total of five people

:01:54. > :01:58.were taken to hospital. Two men and two women

:01:59. > :02:01.were seriously injured. The police investigation is ongoing,

:02:02. > :02:08.but it appears to be We have a coordinated approach

:02:09. > :02:13.to deal with the casualties first, that was our main priority,

:02:14. > :02:16.to save life and make sure Once all that had been done,

:02:17. > :02:23.people accounted of and helped the people out, we then slowed

:02:24. > :02:26.the scene down so we can carry on with the investigations and get

:02:27. > :02:29.the root causes of what happened. A few of its residents who popped

:02:30. > :02:35.into a coffee shop on Christmas Eve will be spending Christmas

:02:36. > :02:48.day in hospital. The government's crisis response

:02:49. > :02:50.Cobra committee will meet on Christmas Day to discuss

:02:51. > :02:52.the situation in flood-hit Cumbria. More heavy rain is forecast

:02:53. > :02:55.to hit the county - and the army has already been put

:02:56. > :02:57.on stand-by to help. River levels have been up and down

:02:58. > :03:01.for weeks now in Cumbria, but more wet weather means

:03:02. > :03:04.they are set to rise sharply again over the next couple of days -

:03:05. > :03:08.and cause more flooding. So they're putting

:03:09. > :03:11.out sandbags again. I would rather be chastised

:03:12. > :03:16.for getting things in place and it not happening, than somebody

:03:17. > :03:19.who says, "It's not going They've only just finished

:03:20. > :03:25.stripping out these flats People living here say they've never

:03:26. > :03:30.known a month like it. We're watching the river going up

:03:31. > :03:38.and down like a yo-yo. People are getting back

:03:39. > :03:41.on their feet a little bit and it The latest forecast of heavy rain

:03:42. > :03:46.means the government is preparing I think we need to be

:03:47. > :03:50.seriously worried. Although this river seems quite low

:03:51. > :03:53.now if you had another 60, 80, 100 millimetres of rain,

:03:54. > :03:56.it could come right up over these banks and it's not just

:03:57. > :03:58.going to be true here, it's going to be true in Keswick,

:03:59. > :04:03.Cockermouth, Appleby and Carlisle. And for so many people

:04:04. > :04:06.hit by flooding so far, the festivities are the least

:04:07. > :04:10.of their concerns. The reality of Christmas is they're

:04:11. > :04:13.just bearing through it and probably looking forward to

:04:14. > :04:16.Christmas being over. Their focus is getting long-term

:04:17. > :04:18.accommodation and getting back So from tomorrow, once again,

:04:19. > :04:24.attention will be focused on river It seems for people living

:04:25. > :04:30.here there's just no letup. More rain is the last thing Cumbria

:04:31. > :04:36.needs at the moment. The misery of flooding

:04:37. > :04:41.is set to continue. People there must be looking

:04:42. > :04:52.at the next few days with a great Just underline how bad it is, the

:04:53. > :04:56.Met office have confirmed today that this December, this month in

:04:57. > :05:01.Cumbria, has been the worry -- the wettest on record and those records

:05:02. > :05:04.have been going for 105 years and there is still six days of the month

:05:05. > :05:09.left and there is more rain in the forecast. As for that outlook over

:05:10. > :05:12.the next couple of days, well, my understanding is that its places in

:05:13. > :05:17.the south of the county which are particularly vulnerable. Appleby am

:05:18. > :05:22.a may flood yet again. Kendall may be affected. But the hope is that

:05:23. > :05:25.the moment, looking at the current models, say the experts, is that the

:05:26. > :05:30.flood defences in Carlisle should hold, so they should not be any

:05:31. > :05:35.flooding there as things stand. That could of course changed. But looking

:05:36. > :05:38.at what people are saying here and those who are affected living near

:05:39. > :05:42.rivers, the feeling is this. If they do get flooded again it just causes

:05:43. > :05:46.a bit more damage and causes another problem, but it doesn't make things

:05:47. > :05:49.too much worse because things have already been destroyed. But it

:05:50. > :05:53.resets the clock. It causes things to go back to square one and having

:05:54. > :05:57.to start all over again. Plans are being made to try to get Cumbria

:05:58. > :06:02.back to normal, or some normality, in the New Year. But that's still a

:06:03. > :06:04.few days away yet. There will be a lot more to get through, more

:06:05. > :06:09.flooding potentially in the next few days, and for people living here,

:06:10. > :06:12.people living close to rivers in this part of north-west England, to

:06:13. > :06:17.keep watching those forecasts and warnings because it could come up

:06:18. > :06:20.with a 12 hours' potential warning time. That could be the problem.

:06:21. > :06:25.Danny Savage, thank you. At least thirteen people have been

:06:26. > :06:28.injured after a bus crashed into a building in Peterborough city

:06:29. > :06:30.centre.The single-decker bus hit the front of a building used

:06:31. > :06:32.as the regional offices of Guide Dogs for the Blind,

:06:33. > :06:35.after a collision with a car. Firefighters cut two people

:06:36. > :06:38.from the damaged car and several passengers on the bus have received

:06:39. > :06:40.treatment for minor injuries. The UK and US governments have

:06:41. > :06:44.issued a warning about possible threats to Westerners in the Chinese

:06:45. > :06:47.captial Beijing on or around British and US officials say

:06:48. > :06:50.they have received information of possible threats in Sanlitun,

:06:51. > :06:54.a busy bar and shopping district. It's not clear what the threat is,

:06:55. > :06:57.but armed police are being deployed and there will be increased security

:06:58. > :07:03.checks in the city. Afghan officials say Taliban

:07:04. > :07:05.militants have been forced out of part of the town of Sangin,

:07:06. > :07:08.in Helmand province, in a military operation

:07:09. > :07:11.backed by US air strikes. There's been no response

:07:12. > :07:14.from the Taliban. The group had earlier said

:07:15. > :07:17.it was in control of Sangin. More than 100 British soldiers

:07:18. > :07:19.were killed there before Nato Two Burmese men have been convicted

:07:20. > :07:27.- and sentenced to death - for murdering two UK

:07:28. > :07:30.tourists in Thailand. The bodies of backpackers

:07:31. > :07:33.Hannah Witheridge and David Miller were found on an island beach

:07:34. > :07:36.in September last year. From Thailand,

:07:37. > :07:39.Jonathan Head reports. Arriving at court to hear their fate

:07:40. > :07:44.- two young Burmese men charged with a horrific crime

:07:45. > :07:49.on a holiday island. David Miller and Hannah Witheridge

:07:50. > :07:51.had been doing what so many young Britons do at their age -

:07:52. > :07:56.backpacking through Thailand. Their battered bodies were found

:07:57. > :07:59.last year on this beach From the start, the police

:08:00. > :08:04.investigation was marred When they detained the two

:08:05. > :08:16.suspects, they were put They both also retracted

:08:17. > :08:23.their earlier confessions, saying they'd been

:08:24. > :08:26.threatened and beaten. There were many doubts expressed

:08:27. > :08:29.about the prosecution case, not just by the defence lawyers

:08:30. > :08:32.but also by international forensic experts, in particular

:08:33. > :08:35.about the central piece of evidence, the police DNA tests,

:08:36. > :08:40.which they said were unreliable. None of that was sufficient to sway

:08:41. > :08:43.the judges, who insisted the tests were up to international standards

:08:44. > :08:46.and enough to justify a guilty The emphatic outcome of this

:08:47. > :08:54.drawn-out trial gave some satisfaction to the family of David

:08:55. > :09:00.Miller, who attended the hearing. We believe that the result

:09:01. > :09:02.today represents justice It is our opinion that the evidence

:09:03. > :09:08.against Zaw Lin and Wai Phyo They raped to satisfy their selfish

:09:09. > :09:16.desires and murdered to cover They have shown no

:09:17. > :09:22.remorse during the trial. It was a very different experience

:09:23. > :09:26.for the mothers of the two convicted In court, the defence lawyers had

:09:27. > :09:33.failed to convince the judges of the flaws they said riddled

:09:34. > :09:37.the prosecution's case. Now, they plan to appeal

:09:38. > :09:39.against the verdict, David Cameron has released his

:09:40. > :09:50.annual Christmas message in which he urges Britons

:09:51. > :09:52.to remember people fleeing persecution, including Christians,

:09:53. > :09:56.and reaffirms that Britain In the message, released on social

:09:57. > :10:00.media, the Prime Minister says that it is because of its Christian

:10:01. > :10:03.values that Britain has been such a successful home to people

:10:04. > :10:05.of all faiths and none. The England pace bowler

:10:06. > :10:08.James Anderson has been ruled out of the first Test against

:10:09. > :10:10.South Africa in Durban on Boxing Day, because of

:10:11. > :10:13.injury to his right calf. England's leading Test wicket-taker

:10:14. > :10:16.was rested for the warm-up match against South Africa A this week,

:10:17. > :10:19.and has bowled just five overs There's more throughout the evening

:10:20. > :10:25.on the BBC News Channel. We're back with the late

:10:26. > :10:27.news at 11:30pm. Now on BBC One it's time

:10:28. > :10:30.for the news where you are.
