:00:37. > :00:41.Parts of Cumbria have been flooded three times in the past month,

:00:42. > :00:44.as our correspondent Danny Savage reports from Kendall.

:00:45. > :00:47.River levels have been up and down for weeks now in Cumbria,

:00:48. > :00:49.but more wet weather means they're set to

:00:50. > :00:53.rise sharply again over the next couple of days and cause more

:00:54. > :00:59.So they're putting out the sand bags again.

:01:00. > :01:05.I would rather be chastised for getting things in place and it

:01:06. > :01:08.not happening, for somebody who says it's not going to happen

:01:09. > :01:13.They've only just finished stripping out these

:01:14. > :01:18.Possessions that were saved are once again at risk.

:01:19. > :01:21.They've never known a month like it here.

:01:22. > :01:24.For people that don't live in Cumbria, how bad has

:01:25. > :01:34.We're watching the river go up and down

:01:35. > :01:39.People are getting back on their feet a little bit.

:01:40. > :01:44.The Government's emergency response committee will hold a COBRA meeting

:01:45. > :01:47.on Christmas Day to discuss the situation, such is the level

:01:48. > :01:52.I think we need to be seriously worried.

:01:53. > :01:55.Although this river seems quite low now, if you had another 60,

:01:56. > :01:57.80, 100 millimetres of rain, it could come

:01:58. > :02:03.That's not just true here, it's true in Keswick,

:02:04. > :02:08.And for so many people hit by flood soing far,

:02:09. > :02:11.the festivities are the least of their concerns.

:02:12. > :02:14.The reality of Christmas is they're just

:02:15. > :02:17.bearing through it and probably looking forward to Christmas

:02:18. > :02:22.Their focus is getting long-term accommodation and getting

:02:23. > :02:28.So from tomorrow, once again, attention will

:02:29. > :02:30.be focussed on river levels here in Cumbria.

:02:31. > :02:33.It seems for people living here, there's just no let up.

:02:34. > :02:36.More rain is the last thing Cumbria needs

:02:37. > :02:41.The misery of flooding is set to continue.

:02:42. > :02:46.A woman in her 70s has died, after a car ploughed into a coffee

:02:47. > :02:47.shop in Westerham in Kent this morning.

:02:48. > :02:50.Five more people were taken to hospital -

:02:51. > :02:53.four with serious injuries and one with minor injuries.

:02:54. > :02:55.The car remained embedded in the window of Costa coffee

:02:56. > :02:58.all day, before being taken away for examination

:02:59. > :03:04.Tonight, the car was pulled out of the cafe.

:03:05. > :03:06.It will be thoroughly examined by the police for any clues

:03:07. > :03:11.And this was the scene soon after the crash.

:03:12. > :03:14.The car had embedded itself right inside the cafe,

:03:15. > :03:19.I actually heard that big bang outside

:03:20. > :03:25.One of the Costa staff asked me to see a woman behind the counter.

:03:26. > :03:34.She didn't reply back, but I can see clearly she is dead.

:03:35. > :03:38.Hours later, the car remained lodged in the coffee shop.

:03:39. > :03:41.Two people on board were cut free by the Fire Service.

:03:42. > :03:48.A woman in her 70s was declared dead at the scene.

:03:49. > :03:50.The car first lost control up the street there.

:03:51. > :03:53.These flourescent markers show its path

:03:54. > :04:04.It was full of people kicking off their Christmas eve.

:04:05. > :04:06.A total of five people were taken to hospital.

:04:07. > :04:09.Two men and two women were seriously injured,

:04:10. > :04:14.The police investigation is ongoing, but it appears to be

:04:15. > :04:19.We had a coordinated approach, to deal with

:04:20. > :04:21.the casualties first, that was our main priority

:04:22. > :04:24.to save life and make sure that there weren't any more

:04:25. > :04:29.Once that was done, we got a count and helped

:04:30. > :04:35.We then slow the scene down to carry on with the investigation and get

:04:36. > :04:42.A few of its residents, who popped into a coffee

:04:43. > :04:45.shop on Christmas eve, will be spending Christmas Day in hospital.

:04:46. > :04:51.Two Burmese men have been convicted - and sentenced to death -

:04:52. > :04:54.for murdering two UK tourists in Thailand.

:04:55. > :04:58.The bodies of backpackers Hannah Witheridge and David Miller

:04:59. > :05:01.were found on an island beach in September last year.

:05:02. > :05:03.From Thailand, Jonathan Head reports.

:05:04. > :05:06.Arriving at court to hear their fate - two young Burmese men charged

:05:07. > :05:11.with a horrific crime on a holiday island.

:05:12. > :05:15.David Miller and Hannah Witheridge had been doing what so many young

:05:16. > :05:18.Britons do at their age - backpacking through Thailand.

:05:19. > :05:21.Their battered bodies were found last year on this beach

:05:22. > :05:27.From the start, the police investigation was marred

:05:28. > :05:41.When they detained the two suspects, they were put

:05:42. > :05:47.They both also retracted their earlier confessions,

:05:48. > :05:49.saying they'd been threatened and beaten.

:05:50. > :05:52.There were many doubts expressed about the prosecution case,

:05:53. > :05:55.not just by the defence lawyers but also by international forensic

:05:56. > :05:58.experts, in particular about the central piece of evidence,

:05:59. > :06:01.the police DNA tests, which they said were unreliable.

:06:02. > :06:04.None of that was sufficient to sway the judges, who insisted the tests

:06:05. > :06:09.were up to international standards and enough to justify a guilty

:06:10. > :06:17.The emphatic outcome of this drawn-out trial gave some

:06:18. > :06:21.satisfaction to the family of David Miller, who attended the hearing.

:06:22. > :06:24.We believe that the result today represents justice

:06:25. > :06:30.It is our opinion that the evidence against Wai Phyo and Zaw Lin

:06:31. > :06:38.It was a very different experience for the mothers of the two convicted

:06:39. > :06:45.Now, they plan to appeal against the verdict,

:06:46. > :06:57.Europe's migrant crisis has been one of the defining stories of the year,

:07:03. > :07:06.16-year-old Nujeen Mustafa, a teenager who escaped the Syrian

:07:24. > :07:30.Three months after reaching Europe, Nujeen Mustafa has found a new life.

:07:36. > :07:40.My life is as regular as I wanted her to be.

:07:41. > :07:45.The girl who is waking up early and going to school every day,

:07:46. > :07:54.This was how she arrived, suffering from

:07:55. > :08:00.Her epic journey from the Middle East made in a wheelchair

:08:01. > :08:05.I first met her in September, stranded on the closed Hungarian

:08:06. > :08:11.I'd love to be an astronaut, to go out and see and find

:08:12. > :08:22.And on she travelled, across European borders.

:08:23. > :08:37.No. They said to some camp or something.

:08:38. > :08:45.Or where they're going to send you after this?

:08:46. > :08:54.Onto Germany and the reunion with a beloved brother,

:08:55. > :09:07.Nujeen shares this flat with her older sister.

:09:08. > :09:10.She dreams of walking and has started

:09:11. > :09:16.Her parents are still living as refugees in Turkey,

:09:17. > :09:19.where they fled to escape the fighting.

:09:20. > :09:22.If I asked you what your Christmas wish is, what is it?

:09:23. > :09:37.Nujeen has come this far by force of her own

:09:38. > :09:40.personality, the love of family and the kindness of strangers.

:09:41. > :09:45.There's no telling what she may achieve in the years to come.

:09:46. > :09:54.And finally, people from across the world have come

:09:55. > :09:57.to Bethlehem in celebration of Christmas.

:09:58. > :10:00.Festivities went ahead in Manger Square, despite high

:10:01. > :10:03.security following recent violence between Israelis and Palestinians.
