:00:24. > :00:27.A national day of mourning in Russia for the victims

:00:28. > :00:32.And after heavy pre-Christmas discounting, will the Boxing Day

:00:33. > :00:54.The music world has been paying tribute to George Michael,

:00:55. > :00:56.who died last night, from suspected heart

:00:57. > :01:04.The singer sold more than 100 million albums, in a career

:01:05. > :01:08.He leapt to fame with the pop duo Wham, enjoying global

:01:09. > :01:10.success in the Eighties, before leaving to forge

:01:11. > :01:15.But he struggled with the pressures of fame and press attention.

:01:16. > :01:17.His band-mate Andrew Ridgeley said he was "heartbroken at the loss

:01:18. > :01:32.Our correspondent Lizo Mzimba reports.

:01:33. > :01:42.George Michael doing what he did best. Even then, he was potentially

:01:43. > :01:54.a music superstar. He and his school friend Andrew Ridgeley formed Wham

:01:55. > :01:58.in the 1980s. There brand of breezy pop captivated the generation and a

:01:59. > :02:03.string of number one hits followed. Then as a solo artist he enjoyed

:02:04. > :02:05.perhaps even greater success. Faith selling millions on both sides of

:02:06. > :02:18.the Atlantic. His popularity wasn't limited to his

:02:19. > :02:22.fans. Fellow musicians were equally overwhelmed by his talents. Here he

:02:23. > :02:38.is rehearsing for the 1992 Freddie Mercury tribute concert.

:02:39. > :02:47.According to his publicist he passed away peacefully on Christmas Day at

:02:48. > :02:53.his home in Oxfordshire. His manager said he died of heart failure.

:02:54. > :02:59.Tributes are being led by his former band-mate Andrew Ridgeley.

:03:00. > :03:21.Paul Young duetted with George Michael. He paid tribute to him

:03:22. > :03:25.today as a musician. He always had that incredible pop sensibility and

:03:26. > :03:29.a voice that could touch people. Some people have a voice and you

:03:30. > :03:34.hear it and it cuts straight through your heart. He seemed to have that

:03:35. > :03:39.ability. As well as success over the years he also had brushes with the

:03:40. > :03:43.law. A car he was driving collided with a high street shop, leading to

:03:44. > :03:47.a spell in jail. He was cautioned for drug possession and received

:03:48. > :03:51.treatment for addiction. To be a part of people's lives as an artist,

:03:52. > :04:00.that's what I dream. And that's something I'm still grateful for.

:04:01. > :04:05.But my god, I wish I could cope with the other stuff the way other people

:04:06. > :04:09.do. I wish I'd been born with that particular suit of armour, you know,

:04:10. > :04:14.because I wasn't. When George Michael revealed he was eight, he

:04:15. > :04:24.said he had kept it secret to stop his mother worrying about HIV aids.

:04:25. > :04:31.A documentary was due next March. When it came to pop, George Michael

:04:32. > :04:33.had it all. The looks, the voice and the ability to write hit after hit

:04:34. > :04:40.again and again. Remembering George Michael, who has

:04:41. > :04:45.died at the age of 53. Russia is holding a day of national

:04:46. > :04:48.mourning for the 92 people who were killed when a military

:04:49. > :04:51.plane crashed in the Black Sea. Pilot error or a technical fault

:04:52. > :04:54.are being blamed for the plane coming down just moments after it

:04:55. > :04:56.left Sochi airport after refuelling. From Moscow, Steve

:04:57. > :05:09.Rosenberg reports. Across Russia, they prayed for the

:05:10. > :05:16.dead. For the 92 victims of yesterday's plane crash. There was a

:05:17. > :05:25.special service today in every Orthodox Church in Russia. This is a

:05:26. > :05:30.day of national mourning. As a sign of respect, Russian flags were flown

:05:31. > :05:36.at half-mast. This is thought to be the last picture ever taken of the

:05:37. > :05:41.Tupolev 154. A fewer hours later, it crashed into the Black Sea. The

:05:42. > :05:46.search operation continued today, not for survivors, there were none,

:05:47. > :05:52.but for bodies. And for the plane's black box flight recorders. Russia's

:05:53. > :05:55.transport minister said that technical failure, or pilot error,

:05:56. > :06:04.may have caused the crash. Terrorism is thought less likely. A killed in

:06:05. > :06:07.the crash, more than 60 members of the Russian army's song and dance

:06:08. > :06:13.troupe. They had been on their way to Syria for a New Year's concert.

:06:14. > :06:18.Outside the musicians's headquarters in Moscow, there is now a shrine,

:06:19. > :06:22.which grows bigger by the hour. As well as bringing flowers and icons

:06:23. > :06:27.and candles here, people have been leaving messages. This one says,

:06:28. > :06:33."You were killed on take-off. Farewell, friends. You won't be

:06:34. > :06:38.returning. We couldn't save you". Natalia's son used to work in the

:06:39. > :06:46.ensemble but left. TRANSLATION: We mourn with everyone

:06:47. > :06:51.else. There is pain deep in my soul. Officially, there is one day of

:06:52. > :06:52.national mourning, but for many Russians, the sense of loss from

:06:53. > :06:58.this disaster will last much longer. Millions of bargain hunters

:06:59. > :07:00.are expected to head to the Boxing Day sales today -

:07:01. > :07:03.although retail analysts say extended discounting earlier this

:07:04. > :07:06.month may mean the shops won't be Meanwhile, the former governor

:07:07. > :07:10.of the Bank of England, Lord King, has suggested Britain would be

:07:11. > :07:12.better placed to make trade deals with countries outside the EU if it

:07:13. > :07:15.left the Single Market completely. Our Economics Correspondent,

:07:16. > :07:30.Andrew Verity, reports. After one day's respite, 14 million

:07:31. > :07:33.of us are expected to hit the shops today, drawn in by the theory that

:07:34. > :07:41.goods are significantly cheaper than two days ago. From Birmingham to

:07:42. > :07:45.Belfast, ?3 billion is expected to be spent in shopping centres on the

:07:46. > :07:51.high Street, with up to another ?1 billion online. I'm always here

:07:52. > :08:02.every Boxing Day morning, yeah. Why? Because I love sales. We were here

:08:03. > :08:06.last week and the exchange rate was 1.5 and it's a lot worse now, so we

:08:07. > :08:10.get a lot more for our money this year than we did last year. The

:08:11. > :08:14.international visitors joining the crowds in London's West End aren't

:08:15. > :08:17.just here for the Boxing Day sales. The Brexit vote weakened the pound

:08:18. > :08:22.and that means that their money buys about a fifth more here than it did

:08:23. > :08:28.a year ago. Its effects like that that create hope that the Brexit

:08:29. > :08:31.vote could lift exports and create at least in the short-term a

:08:32. > :08:37.positive effect. One legacy of the credit boom in the last decade was

:08:38. > :08:41.consumers borrowing unprecedented amounts while exports trailed

:08:42. > :08:45.behind. Today the man who presided over that boom and bust was hoping

:08:46. > :08:48.that Brexit may throw that into reverse. There are many

:08:49. > :08:52.opportunities and we should look at it in a much more self-confident way

:08:53. > :08:56.than either side is approaching it at present. I think that being out

:08:57. > :09:01.of what is a rather unsuccessful European Union, particularly in the

:09:02. > :09:06.economic sense, gives us opportunities as well as obviously

:09:07. > :09:10.great political difficulties. To the incoming US commerce Secretary

:09:11. > :09:16.though, Brexit is an opportunity not for us but for other countries to

:09:17. > :09:19.benefit from the confusion. He has called it a God-given opportunity

:09:20. > :09:23.for cities from Dublin to Frankfurt to take business away from London.

:09:24. > :09:26.And that is the man appointed by Donald Trump to lead trade

:09:27. > :09:28.negotiations with Theresa May's government.

:09:29. > :09:31.50,000 people in England at risk of Type-2 diabetes could be

:09:32. > :09:33.helped by an NHS programme that's being extended from today.

:09:34. > :09:36.The advice on better nutrition and exercise has already

:09:37. > :09:39.It forms part of a package of new measures to curb Type-2

:09:40. > :09:43.diabetes, including funding for more specialist nurses.

:09:44. > :09:53.Japan's Prime Minister will visit Pearl Harbour today,

:09:54. > :09:56.A typhoon has hit the Philippines, forcing tens of thousands to seek

:09:57. > :10:00.Typhoon Nock-ten, with gusts of more than 100 miles per hour,

:10:01. > :10:01.has killed several people and damaged homes.

:10:02. > :10:03.It also led to flooding in coastal communities

:10:04. > :10:08.Japan's Prime Minister will visit Pearl Harbour today,

:10:09. > :10:11.75 years after the Japanese attack on US battleships there, which drew

:10:12. > :10:15.Shinzo Abe will meet President Obama at the naval base

:10:16. > :10:19.in Hawaii and will reaffirm ties between the two countries,

:10:20. > :10:36.The Japanese attacks came in waves during a deadly two hours.

:10:37. > :10:40.Bombs ripped through US battleships, crippling the Pacific Fleet

:10:41. > :10:48.Survivors recalled that the once bustling port burned for hours.

:10:49. > :10:51.I had a fire hose in one hand trying to put out the fires,

:10:52. > :10:56.and with the other I went around memorising these nametags

:10:57. > :10:59.so I could write to their parents and tell them what happened

:11:00. > :11:04.After 75 years, there is now a solemn promise between the two

:11:05. > :11:08.countries never to repeat the horrors of that war.

:11:09. > :11:15.And the US and Japan have developed a close relationship.

:11:16. > :11:18.Barack Obama was the first sitting president to visit Hiroshima,

:11:19. > :11:22.We force ourselves to feel the dread of children

:11:23. > :11:33.Shinzo Abe spoke of an alliance of hope as the first

:11:34. > :11:36.Japanese Prime Minister to address the US Congress.

:11:37. > :11:43.Questions remain about the strength of any future relationship

:11:44. > :11:48.NEWSREEL: Those who lost their lives at Pearl Harbor

:11:49. > :11:57.But these few days will be about remembrance and laying to rest

:11:58. > :12:00.the final ghosts of a world war which brought out
