0:00:29 > 0:00:31and Tour de France winner Sir Bradley Wiggins

0:00:31 > 0:00:33has announced his retirement from cycling.

0:00:33 > 0:00:35In a statement this afternoon he said he had been lucky enough

0:00:35 > 0:00:38to live a dream and make a career out of a sport

0:00:38 > 0:00:40he fell in love with when he was 12.

0:00:40 > 0:00:43It ends a stunning run of success which also

0:00:43 > 0:00:45brought him World Championships and many other honours.

0:00:45 > 0:00:46But it follows questions about medical treatments

0:00:46 > 0:00:48he received in training.

0:00:48 > 0:00:52This report from our Sports News Correspondent Richard Conway.

0:00:52 > 0:00:55On the road and on the track, Sir Bradley Wiggins dominated his

0:00:55 > 0:01:01sport like few others.

0:01:01 > 0:01:03COMMENTATOR: Gold medallist and Olympic champion Bradley Wiggins.

0:01:03 > 0:01:06He's the UK's most decorated Olympian,

0:01:06 > 0:01:09winning eight medals over 16 years.

0:01:09 > 0:01:14In 2012, he became the first Briton to claim the Tour de France title.

0:01:14 > 0:01:19Achievements which took him on a path to the Palace.

0:01:19 > 0:01:23But, after so much that sets over the years,

0:01:23 > 0:01:26Sir Bradley Wiggins' remarkable career has finally rolled to a halt.

0:01:26 > 0:01:29In a statement, he said:

0:01:29 > 0:01:32"I have been lucky enough to live a dream

0:01:32 > 0:01:34and fulfil my childhood aspirations.

0:01:34 > 0:01:38"Kids from Kilburn don't win Olympic golds and Tour de Frances.

0:01:38 > 0:01:40"They do now."

0:01:40 > 0:01:46Wiggins kindled his love of cycling at his local club in south London.

0:01:46 > 0:01:50At the age of 12, he knew what he wanted to achieve,

0:01:50 > 0:01:54telling his teachers he'd one day be an Olympic champion.

0:01:54 > 0:01:56He delivered on that promise winning his first gold

0:01:56 > 0:02:00at the 2004 Athens games.

0:02:00 > 0:02:04All at a time when British cycling success was far from the norm.

0:02:04 > 0:02:07Wiggins has been at the heart of British cycling's

0:02:07 > 0:02:09transformation into world beaters.

0:02:09 > 0:02:13Leading to unprecedented success in Rio this year.

0:02:13 > 0:02:16His personality, intertwined with a love of mod culture,

0:02:16 > 0:02:21helped him to transcend and popularise his sport

0:02:21 > 0:02:23with cycling officials tonight praising his impact on encouraging

0:02:23 > 0:02:26the public to get on their bikes.

0:02:26 > 0:02:29His retirement comes at a time of heightened scrutiny

0:02:29 > 0:02:32into his career, though.

0:02:32 > 0:02:40Earlier this year, Russian hackers revealed Wiggins

0:02:40 > 0:02:45had been given powerful steroids

0:02:45 > 0:02:47injections before three key races, including his 2012

0:02:47 > 0:02:49Tour de France win.

0:02:49 > 0:02:51The substance involved is banned under normal circumstances,

0:02:51 > 0:02:53as it can be performance enhancing but Wiggins legally and legitimately

0:02:53 > 0:02:58applied for a medical exemption, he says to treat hay fever.

0:02:58 > 0:03:01This wasn't about trying to find a way to gain an unfair advantage.

0:03:01 > 0:03:04This was about putting myself back on a level playing field, in order

0:03:04 > 0:03:06to compete at the highest level.

0:03:06 > 0:03:10One of Britain's's brightest sports careers is now at an end

0:03:10 > 0:03:13but it was one that was coloured throughout by gold and yellow.

0:03:13 > 0:03:18Richard Conway, BBC News.

0:03:18 > 0:03:21A woman has died after up to 20 vehicles were involved in

0:03:21 > 0:03:24a massive pile up on the A40 near Witney in Oxfordshire.

0:03:24 > 0:03:26The crashes stretched for more than half a mile and happened

0:03:26 > 0:03:28in thick fog this morning.

0:03:28 > 0:03:32Sangita Myska sent this report from the scene.

0:03:32 > 0:03:35Photographs taken minutes after this morning's crash

0:03:35 > 0:03:37showing chilling detail, the mangled wreckage

0:03:37 > 0:03:40of at least 20 vehicles.

0:03:40 > 0:03:43Eyewitnesses described seeing cars skidding

0:03:43 > 0:03:49across the road through thick fog, smashing into one another, spilling

0:03:49 > 0:03:52debris across two lanes of the A40.

0:03:52 > 0:03:55I was just joining the A40 when I'd seen the brake

0:03:55 > 0:03:58lights and hazard lights, so I came to a stop and then

0:03:58 > 0:04:01obviously I got out of the vehicle and saw the carnage ahead

0:04:01 > 0:04:02and the carnage behind.

0:04:02 > 0:04:03Emotions were very high.

0:04:03 > 0:04:06People were obviously scared.

0:04:06 > 0:04:08It was a bit like a movie scene, really.

0:04:08 > 0:04:09A lot of havoc, people injured.

0:04:09 > 0:04:11A lot of destruction.

0:04:11 > 0:04:15This afternoon, recovery vehicles continued to clear wreckage

0:04:15 > 0:04:21in an attempt to reopen a road that links London to Wales.

0:04:21 > 0:04:23It is several hours since the accident

0:04:23 > 0:04:26this morning and you can see there are about a dozen

0:04:26 > 0:04:29vehicles yet to be cleared from this part of the A40.

0:04:29 > 0:04:32There is still a thick fog over this area of road.

0:04:32 > 0:04:35Visibility now is probably about 200 metres.

0:04:35 > 0:04:38Police officers here tell me that this morning,

0:04:38 > 0:04:42when the crashes happened, drivers could see no further

0:04:42 > 0:04:44than about 15 metres ahead

0:04:44 > 0:04:46and that there was black ice on this road.

0:04:46 > 0:04:49One woman in her 50s died at the scene of the crash.

0:04:49 > 0:04:53Two other people remain in a serious condition in hospital.

0:04:53 > 0:04:55As families continue to crisscross Britain this holiday,

0:04:55 > 0:04:58the police are urging travellers to check weather conditions

0:04:58 > 0:05:04and to drive with caution.

0:05:04 > 0:05:07President-elect Donald Trump has gone head-to-head

0:05:07 > 0:05:11with the outgoing US government over its treatment of Israel.

0:05:11 > 0:05:13Mr Trump tweeted that Israel was being treated

0:05:13 > 0:05:16with total disdain and disrespect.

0:05:16 > 0:05:19And the Israeli Prime Minister has reacted with anger

0:05:19 > 0:05:22to a speech by the US secretary of State John Kerry warning that

0:05:22 > 0:05:24settlement building by Israelis in the West Bank threatens

0:05:24 > 0:05:26hopes for peace.

0:05:26 > 0:05:28Our Middle East Correspondent Yolande Knell reports

0:05:28 > 0:05:31from Jerusalem.

0:05:31 > 0:05:34Tonight, another angry intervention by President-elect Trump,

0:05:34 > 0:05:37this time over Middle East peace.

0:05:37 > 0:05:39On Twitter, he complained that the US was treating Israel

0:05:39 > 0:05:44with total disdain and disrespect, but told it to stay strong

0:05:44 > 0:05:49until 20th January, when he takes office.

0:05:49 > 0:05:52A speech by US Secretary of State John Kerry brought on the row.

0:05:52 > 0:05:54He criticised Israel, accusing its government

0:05:54 > 0:05:56of undermining the chances of a peace agreement

0:05:56 > 0:06:00with the Palestinians.

0:06:00 > 0:06:04We have to be clear about what is happening in the West Bank.

0:06:04 > 0:06:08The Israeli minister publicly supports a two-state solution,

0:06:08 > 0:06:13but his current coalition

0:06:13 > 0:06:15is the most right-wing in Israeli history,

0:06:15 > 0:06:19with an agenda driven by the most extreme elements.

0:06:19 > 0:06:23This was after last week's UN Security Council resolution,

0:06:23 > 0:06:26calling for Israel to stop building Jewish homes on occupied

0:06:26 > 0:06:28Palestinian land.

0:06:28 > 0:06:31The US didn't use its veto power to protect Israel,

0:06:31 > 0:06:34as it usually does.

0:06:34 > 0:06:37And here in Israel, they're worried that in the last days

0:06:37 > 0:06:40of the Obama administration, it could take another

0:06:40 > 0:06:42diplomatic stand, laying out the framework for a peace deal

0:06:42 > 0:06:44at an international conference.

0:06:44 > 0:06:46The Palestinians might welcome that, but Israeli leaders would see it

0:06:46 > 0:06:49as another attempt to tie the hands of Donald Trump, who's promising

0:06:49 > 0:06:53them strong support.

0:06:53 > 0:06:56The Israeli Prime Minister hit back at Mr Kerry

0:06:56 > 0:06:59for his stance on settlements.

0:06:59 > 0:07:02What he did was to spend most of his speech blaming Israel

0:07:02 > 0:07:07for the lack of peace, by passionately condemning a policy

0:07:07 > 0:07:11of enabling Jews to live in their historic homeland

0:07:11 > 0:07:15and in their eternal capital, Jerusalem.

0:07:15 > 0:07:18The Obama administration oversaw two rounds of peace talks between Israel

0:07:18 > 0:07:21and the Palestinians.

0:07:21 > 0:07:25Both broke down acrimoniously.

0:07:25 > 0:07:28Now they are trying to use their final three weeks in office

0:07:28 > 0:07:32to set a new path, but it could be too little, too late.

0:07:32 > 0:07:34Yolande Knell, BBC News, Jerusalem.

0:07:34 > 0:07:36A search has been called off

0:07:36 > 0:07:39for the night for the final crew member missing at sea

0:07:39 > 0:07:41after a fishing boat capsized off the Kent coast.

0:07:41 > 0:07:46One person has died and another was found clinging

0:07:46 > 0:07:49to the upturned hull - early this morning -

0:07:49 > 0:07:50and was airlifted to hospital.

0:07:50 > 0:07:57The boat was found 17 miles off the coast of Ramsgate.

0:07:57 > 0:07:59More than 80 per cent of people in England,

0:07:59 > 0:08:01aged between 40 and 60, are either overweight,

0:08:01 > 0:08:02inactive, or drink too much.

0:08:02 > 0:08:04That's according to Public Health England which says their lifestyles

0:08:04 > 0:08:07are greatly increasing their risk of diseases such as diabetes.

0:08:07 > 0:08:16Our Health Correspondent Sophie Hutchinson has more.

0:08:16 > 0:08:18This is the trim new look of Lee Parker since exercising

0:08:18 > 0:08:21and changing his diet.

0:08:21 > 0:08:24A few months ago he weighed 22 stone but now he can fit

0:08:24 > 0:08:29into one of those old trouser legs and a wake-up call came

0:08:29 > 0:08:31when his seven-year-old son told that he loved him,

0:08:31 > 0:08:33even though he was fat.

0:08:33 > 0:08:36It was a case of "just order a pizza tonight",

0:08:36 > 0:08:39we have food in but could not be bothered cooking it.

0:08:39 > 0:08:42You just become a bit lazy and drawn out with

0:08:42 > 0:08:44the daily grind of routine.

0:08:44 > 0:08:47Figures show worrying trends, almost 80% of

0:08:47 > 0:08:50women aged 40 to 60 are either overweight, obese, physically

0:08:50 > 0:08:52inactive or drinking more than official guidelines

0:08:52 > 0:08:58and almost 90% of men fall into the same category.

0:08:58 > 0:09:00Amongst the health risks is diabetes,

0:09:00 > 0:09:04it has doubled in this age group in the past 20 years and

0:09:04 > 0:09:13treatment costs the NHS in England an estimated ?14 billion per year.

0:09:13 > 0:09:17The reason why we're seeing these increases in chronic

0:09:17 > 0:09:21diseases like cancer, stroke and heart disease,

0:09:21 > 0:09:24is in a large part because of behaviour is adopted

0:09:24 > 0:09:26during the 40 to 60 age period, so still smoking,

0:09:26 > 0:09:28not taking enough physical activity, or drinking too much alcohol.

0:09:28 > 0:09:32And Public Health England is offering some help.

0:09:32 > 0:09:35This is the online health quiz that government officials

0:09:35 > 0:09:43want 40 to 60-year-olds to take part in.

0:09:43 > 0:09:45It is on the government website and asks

0:09:45 > 0:09:48question about whether you are a man or woman

0:09:48 > 0:09:50and why you might want to become more healthy.

0:09:50 > 0:09:52It looks pretty straightforward, but the question is,

0:09:52 > 0:09:54will it help to tackle the health crisis

0:09:54 > 0:09:56for middle-aged people?

0:09:56 > 0:10:01It is extremely hard, I have no willpower

0:10:01 > 0:10:03whatsoever and life is too good and we have

0:10:03 > 0:10:04too much choice.

0:10:04 > 0:10:06I lead a very unhealthy lifestyle.

0:10:06 > 0:10:15Fatty food, smoking and drinking, no exercise.

0:10:15 > 0:10:18There is too much temptation, it is too easy to

0:10:18 > 0:10:21go to the supermarket and buy a ready meal and put it in the

0:10:21 > 0:10:22microwave.

0:10:22 > 0:10:25It is not that difficult to be healthy if you put your mind

0:10:25 > 0:10:26to it.

0:10:26 > 0:10:33The government is hoping to nudge people into following the

0:10:33 > 0:10:35example of Lee with attacks on sugary

0:10:35 > 0:10:39drinks which comes in in 2018, also expected to help.

0:10:39 > 0:10:41But many health professionals and campaigners are concerned that

0:10:41 > 0:10:43measures still do not go far enough.

0:10:43 > 0:10:47You can see more on all of today's stories on the BBC News Channel,

0:10:47 > 0:10:49here on BBC One we can now join the BBC's news teams where you are.
